Protein, energetic, enzymatic and mineral profile of Nellore cows during the pregnancy, parturition and postpartum

The aim of this study was to evaluate the protein energetic, enzymatic and mineral profile of Nellore cows during the pregnancy, parturition and postpartum. Fifteen multiparous cows with 4 ± 1 years of age and live weight of 400 ± 50 kg were used at different stages (non-pregnant, in the initial, middle and late pregnancy, at birth, one day postpartum, 30 and 60 days postpartum). Blood collections were performed every 30 days and assayed for the following blood biomarkers: Protein (total proteins, albumin, urea and creatinine), energetic (cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and beta hydroxybutyrate), mineral (calcium, phosphorus, magnesium) and enzymatic (alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase). Calcium had the lowest concentrations (p < 0.05) in the initial pregnancy, while phosphorus had the highest concentration at parturition (p < 0.05). Triglycerides, glucose and beta hydroxybutyrate were influenced by the stages of pregnancy, reducing in the late pregnancy and at parturition. Glucose had a reduction in the late pregnancy and elevation in the postpartum. Beta hydroxybutyrate showed increase at the late pregnancy. Although lipomobilization occurred in the phases of higher metabolic demands in the attempt to maintain homeostatic conditions. Nellore cows did not present negative energy balance in the late pregnancy period, maintaining normal variation in blood markers throughout the experimental period.

Subclinical hypomagnesemia: Prevalence and causes in dairy cows in the semiarid region of the state of Paraíba, Brazil

ABSTRACT In dairy farming, cows display important metabolic changes during the transition period, particularly high-production cows, which need nutrients in greater quantity to meet the required demand. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of subclinical hypomagnesemia in pre- and post-partum dairy cows inserted in milk-production systems in the Sousa microregion and the district of São João do Rio do Peixe, both in the State of Paraíba, Brazil. As such, visits were made every two weeks to 34 rural properties, where the team collected 357 blood samples by venepuncture, 106 from pre-partum lactating cows and 251 from lactating cows in the post-partum period. It was found that the properties supplied three types of mineral supplement: a single supplement of NaCl, a supplement of NaCl + mineral base, and a commercial supplement. The cows receiving the commercial mineral supplement had the highest prevalence (10.53%) of the disorder, even showing a significant difference (P < .05) between the other types of supplement. In relation to reproductive period, it was found that the post-partum cows had a higher prevalence of subclinical hypomagnesemia (9.96%) than did the pre-partem cows (8.49%); there was, however, no significant difference (P > .05) between the two. Studies such as this are fundamental for alerting rural and technical producers to the occurrence of subclinical hypomagnesemia in the region, in addition to the damage caused by metabolic disorders.

HIPOCALCEMIA EM VACAS LEITEIRAS DA AGRICULTURA FAMILIAR

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a ocorrência de hipocalcemia associada ou não a hipomagnesemia em vacas leiteiras de propriedades de agricultura familiar. Foram avaliadas 22 vacas das raças Jersey, Holandesa e Jersolando, no período de transição, oriundas de pequenas propriedades de agricultura familiar, com produção média 12L/leite/dia. A concentração do cálcio total e do magnésio séricos foi determinada por metodologia colorimétrica e cálculo do cálcio ionizado estimado a partir das concentrações séricas do cálcio total, de proteína e albumina. Foi observada hipocalcemia em 50% dos animais no pré-parto (8,2±1,4mg/dL) e 63,6% no pós-parto (7,7±1,7 mg/dL). A redução do cálcio ionizado foi menos frequente, com grande parte dos animais apresentando cálcio ionizado estimado dentro da normalidade, com média de 4,6±0,83 mg/dL no pré-parto e 4,3±1,0 mg/dL no pós-parto. Todos os animais apresentaram concentrações de magnésio sérico dentro da normalidade, descartando-se hipomagnesemia. A concentração média de magnésio no pré-parto foi 2,4±0,3 mg/dL com elevação significativa (p<0,05) no pós-parto para 2,7±0,5 mg/dL. Conclui-se que as vacas leiteiras da agricultura familiar são susceptíveis à ocorrência de hipocalcemia e a ausência de sinais clínicos pode estar relacionada à manutenção da concentração de cálcio ionizado próxima da normalidade associada à ausência de hipomagnesemia.

Mineral profile of crossbred F 1 Holstein x Gyr dairy cows during the transition period in summer and winter

ABSTRACT The transition period is often a great challenge for dairy cows and mineral imbalances are frequent. With the aim to better understand the mineral profile of F1 Holstein x Gyr dairy cows and their performances under the different conditions of summer and winter, we collected blood samples to measure calcium, magnesium and phosphorus. Samplings were performed during summer and winter, on 15 and 13 pluriparous F1 Holstein x Gyr dairy cows, respectively. Blood sampling started 4 weeks prior to the expected calving date until 30 days postpartum. The mean concentrations of all three minerals had a different pattern during the transition period in each season, representing the interaction time x season. Calcium concentration was lower in winter and more animals suffered from subclinical hypocalcemia (100%) then in summer (38.46%). Magnesium concentration was also lower in winter and 46.67% of animals had hypomagnesemia, contributing for the higher hypocalcemia frequency observed in the same season. A high proportion of animals had hyperphosphatemia what can represent an environmental problem and more attention should be given to it. The high frequency of animals with subclinical hypocalcemia is alarming once that can lead to greater consequences.
