Abstract
Automated neuropsychiatric batteries have been used in research and clinical practice, including for chronic diseases, such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. The Pediatric Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics battery (Ped-ANAM), originally developed for use in American-English speaking individuals, allows tracking of cognitive functions. It can be applied to people over 9 years old. The aim of this study was to translate and present initial validation data from the Ped-ANAM into Brazilian-Portuguese. We translated the battery according to Beaton’s guidelines. Psychometric properties were tested, internal consistency was analyzed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, test-retest reliability by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Further, we measured the test execution speed at both times as a temporal stability. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used for structural validity. Evidence of construct validity was assessed through assessment of the relationships with the Wechsler Intelligence Scales. All participants prior to the start of study related activities signed an informed consent form approved by the local ethics committee. A sample of 230 individuals [mean (range) of age: 23 (9 to 60) years; 65% females] was included; a subset of 51 individuals [mean (range) of age: 18 (9 to 57) years, 59% female] completed the Ped-ANAM twice to assess test-retest reliability, and another subset of 54 individuals [mean (range) of age: 20.4 (7 to 62) years; 67% female] completed the Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children and Adult for assessment of the Ped-ANAM’s construct validity. Our results suggest that the internal consistency of the Ped-ANAM (Cronbach’s α = 0.890) and its subtest test-retest reliability were excellent (ICC: 0.59 to 0.94). There was no clustering in the Principal Components Analysis, suggestive of non-grouping of the evaluated variables. Construct validity assessment to the Wechsler Scales showed expected ranges of low to strong correlations (Spearman correlations: ρ = 0.40 to ρ = 0.69). We concluded that, based on the results of this study, a cross-culturally validated Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Ped-ANAM has been developed and it is a reliable tool for the screening cognitive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The International Classification of Functionality (ICF) has been recommended to enable a broader and more holistic view of an individual's health condition. In addition, it works as an important reference for multiprofessional teams. In low-income countries, like Brazil, the attempts to systematize and incorporate the ICF model in health services has been a challenge. AIM The aim was to analyze the development of premature babies considering the biopsychosocial model of the ICF. DESIGN A longitudinal study. SETTING Maternity in the northeast Brazil. POPULATION Thirty-five premature babies were evaluated in the first stage and 20 in the second. METHODS Pre, perinatal, socioeconomic data and environmental factors were collected, and general movements assessed during the 38th (±1.79) week of corrected gestational age. The Age and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ-3) was used to assess child development, in the 13th (±1.50) month of life. The instruments were chosen with the objective of evaluating information necessary for the follow-up of premature infants and to represent the five domains of the ICF. RESULTS Of the 35 newborns initially evaluated, 20 were reassessed at 1 year of age and 70% were boys. In the function and structure domain, 55% exhibited altered general movements and 35% grade 1 intraventricular hemorrhage; in activity and participation, 15% displayed delayed communication, 20% delayed ample motor coordination, 40% fine motor coordination and problem resolution and 35% personal/social delay in the ASQ-3. Only one item of the personal factors (male sex) and function and structure domain (intraventricular hemorrhage) exhibited an association with atypical child development. CONCLUSIONS Given the susceptibility of premature newborn neurodevelopment and the magnitude of the biopsychosocial model of the ICF, even at this early stage of life, it was possible to observe the influence of personal factors, body function and structure domains on atypical child development. CLINICAL REHABILITATION IMPACT The care for the premature newborn with global look of the classification of functioning, disability and health.

Abstract

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of health education in learning and cognitive development of children infected, previously treated in an endemic area for helminthiasis. METHODS It is a longitudinal, experimental, with random allocation of participants. The study included 87 children of both sexes enrolled in the school hall of Maranhão, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and divided into two groups: intervention and control. Initially the children were submitted to the parasitological fecal examination for infection diagnosis and, when positive, they were treated. For the data collection, a structured questionnaire and the psychological tests Raven, Wisc-III and DAP III were applied, before and after the educational intervention. For the group comparison, the Mann Whitney test was used, and established significance level of 5%. RESULTS It was found that previously infected children who received the educational intervention, children showed higher performance than the control group in strutured questionnaire (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS It is acceptable to suppose the positive influence and the importance in the use of educational interventions in the cognitive recovery and learning of children previously treated with anthelmintics.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract
The study describes the relationship between anthropometric status, socioeconomic conditions, and quality of home environment and child cognitive development in 320 children from 20 to 42 months of age, randomly selected from 20,000 households that represent the range of socioeconomic and environmental conditions in Salvador, Bahia, Northeast Brazil. The inclusion criterion was to be less than 42 months of age between January and July 1999. Child cognitive development was assessed using the Bayley Scales for Infant Development, and the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment Inventory (HOME) was applied to assess quality of home environment. Anthropometric status was measured using the indicators weight/age and height/age ratios (z-scores), and socioeconomic data were collected through a standard questionnaire. Statistical analysis was conducted through univariate and hierarchical linear regression. Socioeconomic factors were found to have an indirect impact on early cognitive development mediated by the child's proximal environment factors, such as appropriate play materials and games available and school attendance. No independent association was seen between nutritional status and early cognitive development.
