Abstract
BACKGROUND Grazing behavior is common in patients undergoing bariatric surgery (BS); however, little is known about grazing behavior in operated patients in the long term. We aimed to estimate grazing frequency and its association with weight loss and surgery response in patients who had undergone BS. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 109 patients who had undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass at least 5 years previously. They answered questions about socioeconomic factors, surgical information, and adherence to treatment/follow-up. The Rep(eat) questionnaire was used for grazing assessment. Student's t-test and Pearson's chi-square test were used to evaluate differences between groups. Analysis of covariance and partial correlation were used to investigate grazing behavior, and weight loss outcomes were controlled for the elapsed time since BS, healthcare service type, current psychologist care status, and the presence of a constriction ring. RESULTS The mean elapsed time since BS was 9.97 ± 2.39 years. Patients with grazing behavior (67%) comprised fewer surgery responders (p = 0.019), had lower total (%TWL, p = 0.005) and excess weight loss (%EWL, p = 0.029), and received less psychological counseling (45.5% vs. 54.5%, p = 0.042). Correlations were found between the presence of grazing and its subtypes and %EWL and %TWL (T = - 0.382, T = - 0.361, p < 0.001; compulsive grazing: T = - 0.358, T = - 0.342, p < 0.001, p = 0.001; non-compulsive grazing: T = - 0.333, T = - 0.311, p = 0.001, p = 0.003). No significant difference between patients with and without grazing behavior was found for previous/current diagnoses of psychological diseases or dietitian counseling. CONCLUSION Grazing behavior is common in the long-term among patients who have undergone BS and is negatively related to weight loss parameters.

Abstract
Severe obesity is associated with major health issues and bariatric surgery is still the only treatment to offer significant and durable weight loss. Assessment of dietary intakes is an important component of the bariatric surgery process. Objective: To document the dietary assessment tools that have been used with patients targeted for bariatric surgery and patients who had bariatric surgery and explore the extent to which these tools have been validated. Methods: A literature search was conducted to identify studies that used a dietary assessment tool with patients targeted for bariatric surgery or who had bariatric surgery. Results: 108 studies were included. Among all studies included, 27 used a dietary assessment tool that had been validated either as part of the study per se (n = 11) or in a previous study (n = 16). Every tool validated per se in the cited studies was validated among a bariatric population, while none of the tools validated in previous studies were validated in this population. Conclusion: Few studies in bariatric populations used a dietary assessment tool that had been validated in this population. Additional studies are needed to develop valid and robust dietary assessment tools to improve the quality of nutritional studies among bariatric patients.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the food intolerance after banded Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), correlating the data of food ingestion. METHODS: This is an observational prospective study, which evaluated the individuals before and 3, 6, and 12 months after banded RYGB. We performed an anthropometric evaluation and an assessment of the habitual food ingestion and applied a food tolerance questionnaire. RESULTS: The study group was comprised of 75 individuals, 89% of them female, with a percentual weight loss of 29.73 ± 6.79%. The observed results were that food intolerance increased over time and 1 year after surgery, only 2.7% reported to ingest any type of food, while the greatest difficulty was related to red meat (80%). Regarding vomits, after surgery, this proportion significantly increased after 3, 6, and 12 months. Preoperatively, the mean protein ingestion was 98 g, which decreased to 50 g after 3 and 6 months and to 51 g after 12 months. As a conclusion, food intolerance significantly increased following banded RYGB, leading to a crescent dissatisfaction regarding food and an increase in the vomits frequency.

Abstract
Background: Studies related to obesity have shown association with metabolic syndrome. Data showing that obesity is capable to cause low grade chronic inflammation, without its classic signs and symptoms, call attention to researches to study different cells types and the mechanism of the inflammatory process. Aim: To evaluate the variation of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL6) in diabetic patients with BMI <35 kg/m2 in the pre and postoperative of partial duodenal switch. Method: Nine patients were studied before and one year after the operation and the variation of the serum IL6 was measured by Elisa. The changes of HbA1c were also registered. Results: The pre-operative IL6 levels reached 65,50436±2,911993 pg/ml and one year after de operation 39,47739±3,410057 and the HbA1c average of 10,67 and 5.8 in the same period. Conclusion: The partial duodenal switch was efficient to control one year after the procedure the chronic inflammatory process caused by the diabetes mellitus type 2 with BMI <35 by dropping the IL6 levels and bringing the HbA1c to normal.

Abstract
Background Bariatric surgery is deemed one of the most effective procedures for the treatment of obesity and it aims at the reduction and maintenance of weight loss in long term, as the control of the related comorbidities. Aim Quantify the occurrence of alterations of the gastrointestinal tract, suggestive signs of nutritional deficiencies and the use of supplements in a group of women undergoing bariatric surgery. Methods The sample consisted of women aged 20-65 years submitted to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass with monitoring equal to or higher than 24 months. For the qualitative analysis, the Feeding Frequency Questionnaire was used. Results In the postoperative period, alopecia was the most reported (79.3%), followed by changes in the texture of the nails, both considered predictive of nutritional deficiencies. Changes in the gastrointestinal tract were described in 86.2%, and episodes of dumping were reported in 65.5%. Qualitative analysis has shown reduced daily consumption of sources of animal and plant proteins. Conclusion After bariatric surgery can occur flatulence, vomiting and dumping syndrome as the most frequent representative symptoms of digestive functional disorders. Alopecia and nail changes are the most important signs of nutritional deficiency. The use of dietary supplements in the postoperative period is scarce and sporadic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The jejunal pouch interposition between the gastric body and the duodenum after the gastrectomy, although not frequent in the surgical practice today, has been successfully employed for the prevention and treatment of the postgastrectomy syndromes. In the latter, it is included the dumping syndrome, which affects 13-58% of the patients who undergo gastrectomy. AIM Retrospective assessment of the results of this procedure for the prevention of the dumping syndrome. METHODS Fourty patients were selected and treatetd surgically for peptic ulcer, between 1965 and 1970. Of these, 29 underwent vagotomy, antrectomy, gastrojejunalduodenostomy at the lesser curvature level, and the 11 remaining were submitted to vagotomy, antrectomy, gastrojejunal-duodenostomy at the greater curvature level. The gastro-jejuno-duodenal transit was assessed in the immediate or late postoperative with the contrasted study of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The clinical evolution was assessed according to the Visick grade. RESULTS Of the 40 patients, 28 were followed with the contrast evaluation in the late postoperative. Among those who were followed until the first month (n=22), 20 (90%) had slow gastro-jejuno-duodenal transit and in two (10%) the transit was normal. Among those who were followed after the first month (n=16), three (19%) and 13 (81%) had slow and normal gastric emptying, respectively. None had the contrasted exam compatible with the dumping syndrome. Among the 40 patients, 22 underwent postoperative clinical evaluation. Of these, 19 (86,5%) had excellent and good results (Visick 1 and 2, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The jejunal pouch interposition showed to be a very effective surgical procedure for the prevention of the dumping syndrome in gastrectomized patients.
