Social support in the healthcare of women submitted to breast cancer treatment

This study aimed to verify the prevalence of low social support (LSS) and associated factors in women submitted to breast cancer (BC) treatment. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 101 female residents of the municipality of Natal (Northeast Brazil), diagnosed with BC and submitted to oncological treatment. Data collection took place between July/2015 and May/2016 from medical records and individuals' interviews, and from the Medical Outcome Study-Social Support Survey. Descriptive, bivariate and multivariate statistics were carried out through Poisson's regression with robust variance and significance level 0.05. Prevalence of LSS in women with BC was 22.8% with confidence interval 14.6-39.94. Type of access to public services (p < .03), prevalence ratio (PR) 1.84 and negative self-rated health (p < .001), PR 4.47 were associated with LSS. These results were obtained after adjustments by the variables age and presence of chronic diseases. The associations established herein could have been mostly related to fragilities of the Brazilian health system, and can contribute to the planning of actions directed to the studied population.

Social Support, Self-Efficacy, and Psychological Wellbeing of Adults with Type 2 Diabetes

Social support improves self-efficacy, which in turns enhances self-management that lead to better psychological outcomes of persons with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social support and psychological outcomes of adults with T2D. A cross-sectional design was used to recruit a sample of 339 participants from a diabetes clinic. The participants responded to a series of questionnaires on demographics, social support dimensions, and self-management; self-efficacy; and psychological outcomes. The function and quality of social support were positively associated with self-efficacy. Self-efficacy was significantly associated with both self-management and psychological outcomes. In addition, self-efficacy demonstrated successful mediation role in the relationship between social support and psychological outcomes of T2D, however, self-management failed to mediate this relationship. The quality and functionality of social support are distinctive variables that should be recognized to promote social support interventions to reduce or prevent T2D-related psychological outcomes.

Young adult cancer patients' experiences of private social network support during cancer treatment

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

To explore young adult cancer patients' experiences of support from their private social network during cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND

Cancer treatment in young adulthood (aged 18-35 years) can be distressing. Social support is crucial for health and well-being, especially for young people and in times of crisis. Research indicates that young cancer patients experience a lack of social network support, but little is known about the types of private social network support available during cancer treatment.

DESIGN

Qualitative study with interpretive descriptive design.

METHODS

Twenty young adult cancer patients with different cancer diagnoses were interviewed retrospectively using a semi-structured interview guideline. Data were analysed using systematic text condensation. The COREQ checklist for qualitative research was followed.

RESULTS

"From independence to dependence" was identified as a bridging theme, which was elaborated by four sub-themes: (1) "My partner was my rock-or not"; (2) "My family stood by me-or not"; (3) "My friends supported me-or not"; and (4) "I lacked young adult cancer peers-or not."

CONCLUSION

The patients' major sources of private social network support were their partners and close family members. Only a few friends supported them during cancer treatment, and most lacked peer support. The type of social network support they received varied, and not all support was perceived as helpful. Helpful network support was experienced as being unconditional and given with empathy and without prompting. Patients without sufficient support from a partner or family members seem to be especially vulnerable.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

Nurses play a crucial role in educating young adult cancer patients about the importance of social support and helping them to map their social network and being explicit when requesting support. Nurses should inform patients' networks about both helpful and unhelpful support and should facilitate interaction between patients.

Characteristics of the social networks of families living with parental cancer and support provided

OBJECTIVE

To examine the characteristics of the social networks of families living with parental cancer and the kind of social support they provide compared with what the families report having received.

BACKGROUND

Parental cancers are highly distressing for both parents and children. Among other concerns, families report a severe lack of social support. However, we know little about these families' private social networks, nor support provided and received as reported by network members and the family.

METHODS

Using a descriptive cross-sectional design, 16 families living with parental cancer and 130 of their network members participated. Healthy parents and network members filled out The Assistance Questionnaire-Receivers of support (AQR)/The Assistance Questionnaire-Providers of Support (AQP).

RESULTS

Network members were mainly resourceful friends (44%) and family members (42%). Only 1/3 became supporters at diagnosis, and nearly 50% had to be asked. Supporters provided a variety of types of help, especially emotional support. A match between the perception of the healthy parent and that of the network members was found for provided (p = 0.211) and received (p = 0.741) support. Supporters were satisfied with their provided support, experiencing it as rewarding and associated with few negative aspects. The STROBE checklist for observational studies was followed in reporting the results.

CONCLUSIONS

The social networks, being mainly family and friends, were able to provide different types of help, especially emotional support. A useful suggestion may be to involve supporters at an earlier stage, providing more practical support.

RELEVANCE FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE

Nurses are in a unique position to promote social support for families living with parental cancer by embracing a network focus, by emphasising the importance and potential of social support, by helping families to map their network and by teaching them how to be explicit in their requests for support.

Social support network and quality of life in multiple sclerosis patients

Objective

To analyse the relationship between the social support network (SSN) and health related quality of life (HRQOL) in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.

Methods

The sample comprised 150 consecutive MS patients attending our MS clinic. To assess the socio-demographic data, a specifically designed questionnaire was applied. The HRQOL dimensions were measured with the Short-Form Health Survey Questionnaire-SF36 and the SSN with the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey. Spearman's correlation was used to compare the magnitude of the relationship between the SSN and HRQOL.

Results

The mean patient age was 41.7 years (± 10.4; range: 18-70 yr); the mean Expanded Disability Status Score was 2.5 (±2.4; range: 0-9). There was a statistically significant correlation between the structure of the SSN and the HRQOL.

Conclusion

The composition of the SSN, social group membership and participation in voluntary work have an important role in the HRQOL of patients with MS.

SentiHealth-Cancer: A sentiment analysis tool to help detecting mood of patients in online social networks

BACKGROUND

Cancer is a critical disease that affects millions of people and families around the world. In 2012 about 14.1 million new cases of cancer occurred globally. Because of many reasons like the severity of some cases, the side effects of some treatments and death of other patients, cancer patients tend to be affected by serious emotional disorders, like depression, for instance. Thus, monitoring the mood of the patients is an important part of their treatment. Many cancer patients are users of online social networks and many of them take part in cancer virtual communities where they exchange messages commenting about their treatment or giving support to other patients in the community. Most of these communities are of public access and thus are useful sources of information about the mood of patients. Based on that, Sentiment Analysis methods can be useful to automatically detect positive or negative mood of cancer patients by analyzing their messages in these online communities.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this work is to present a Sentiment Analysis tool, named SentiHealth-Cancer (SHC-pt), that improves the detection of emotional state of patients in Brazilian online cancer communities, by inspecting their posts written in Portuguese language. The SHC-pt is a sentiment analysis tool which is tailored specifically to detect positive, negative or neutral messages of patients in online communities of cancer patients. We conducted a comparative study of the proposed method with a set of general-purpose sentiment analysis tools adapted to this context.

METHODS

Different collections of posts were obtained from two cancer communities in Facebook. Additionally, the posts were analyzed by sentiment analysis tools that support the Portuguese language (Semantria and SentiStrength) and by the tool SHC-pt, developed based on the method proposed in this paper called SentiHealth. Moreover, as a second alternative to analyze the texts in Portuguese, the collected texts were automatically translated into English, and submitted to sentiment analysis tools that do not support the Portuguese language (AlchemyAPI and Textalytics) and also to Semantria and SentiStrength, using the English option of these tools. Six experiments were conducted with some variations and different origins of the collected posts. The results were measured using the following metrics: precision, recall, F1-measure and accuracy

RESULTS

The proposed tool SHC-pt reached the best averages for accuracy and F1-measure (harmonic mean between recall and precision) in the three sentiment classes addressed (positive, negative and neutral) in all experimental settings. Moreover, the worst accuracy value (58%) achieved by SHC-pt in any experiment is 11.53% better than the greatest accuracy (52%) presented by other addressed tools. Finally, the worst average F1 (48.46%) reached by SHC-pt in any experiment is 4.14% better than the greatest average F1 (46.53%) achieved by other addressed tools. Thus, even when we compare the SHC-pt results in complex scenario versus others in easier scenario the SHC-pt is better.

CONCLUSIONS

This paper presents two contributions. First, it proposes the method SentiHealth to detect the mood of cancer patients that are also users of communities of patients in online social networks. Second, it presents an instantiated tool from the method, called SentiHealth-Cancer (SHC-pt), dedicated to automatically analyze posts in communities of cancer patients, based on SentiHealth. This context-tailored tool outperformed other general-purpose sentiment analysis tools at least in the cancer context. This suggests that the SentiHealth method could be instantiated as other disease-based tools during future works, for instance SentiHealth-HIV, SentiHealth-Stroke and SentiHealth-Sclerosis.

[Social support perceived by cancer patients and its relation with social and demographic characteristics]

To analyze the relation between social support and socio-demographic characteristics of oncology patients. Transversal study, developed with oncology patients living in the Ijut city, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil between July and December 2012, the population was selected through convenience. For data collection we used the Brazilian version of the Social Support Scale and the Medical Outcomes Study data were analyzed with descriptive statistics resources and analytical. Average scores on the dimensions were: 82.36 +/- 24.42 (positive interaction), 85.39 +/- 19.81 (information), 87.98 +/- 18.68 (emotional support), 88.52 +/- 18.56 (material support) and 93.50 +/- 14.44 (affective support). Evidences showed higher averages in male mulattos patients (p < 0.05). There was a direct and growing relationship between per capita income, social support and affective positive interaction. It was proven that patients receive social support in all dimensions, with high scores, but with variations, considering the characteristics of gender, civil status, educational level, per capita income and race.
