Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles dispersed in glycerol or water, serving as optical clearing agents nanocolloids (OCAs-NC), for improving optical coherence tomography (OCT) images and highlighting incipient lesions in ex vivo human teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twelve human teeth with incipient lesions were divided into seven groups according to the OCA-NC; they were subjected to G1 (air), G2 (glycerol), G3 (TiO2 0.1%), G4 (TiO2 0.01%), G5 (TiO2 0.001%), G6 (AgNO3 10%), and G7 (AgNO3 100%). The OCA-NC was applied to the occlusal surface, and two-dimensional images of the specimens were analyzed using OCT (930 nm central wavelength; 100 nm bandwidth; 5 mW output power; axial resolution of 7/5.3 μm in water and air, respectively; lateral resolution of 8 μm; and light penetration depth of 1.6 mm inside the sample). RESULTS The findings demonstrated that the utilization of OCAs-NC containing metallic or dielectric nanoparticles (AgNO3 and TiO2) led to improved differentiation between sound and demineralized enamel on occlusal surfaces. Additionally, it enhanced the depth of image penetration when analyzing this hard tissue with OCT. CLINICAL RELEVANCE In the current context of minimally invasive dentistry, the use of OCAs-NC in conjunction with OCT can provide clinicians with early diagnosis, allowing for the determination of less/more invasive therapies and consequently halting the disease before cavitation of dental tissues occurs.

Abstract
A dual optical configuration to inspect the internal and external mechanical response of a composite specimen is presented. The inspection simultaneously uses two equally aligned optical techniques, digital holographic interferometry and Fourier domain optical coherence tomography, to retrieve surface and internal data, respectively. The sample under study is a composite specimen of poly-methyl-methacrylate reinforced with metallic particles. Two different sets of samples are analyzed to compare their mechanical behavior. A homemade, fully controlled testing machine is used to apply a controlled compression load while each technique registers an image. In this form, the surface and internal optical phase measurements are correlated to the same compression value for comparison purposes. Results for each technique are directly presented as simultaneous displacement maps, and a discussion and conclusion of this proposed dual method of inspection are presented.

Abstract
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has generally been used as a nondestructive technique to evaluate integrities of composite restorations. We investigated marginal and internal adaptations of ceramic inlay restorations with OCT and compared them to results with the silicone replica technique. Round-shaped class I cavities were prepared on 16 human maxillary first premolar teeth. Ceramic inlays were fabricated. Silicone replicas from inlays were obtained and sectioned to measure marginal and internal adaptations with a stereomicroscope (Leica Dfc 295, Bensheim, Germany). Inlays were cemented on respective teeth. Marginal and internal adaptations were then measured with the OCT system (Thorlabs, New Jersey, USA) in 200- μm intervals. Replica and OCT measurements were compared with independent samples t-tests. A paired t-test was used to evaluate the marginal and internal adaptations of each group (p < 0.05). Marginal and internal adaptations were 100.97 ± 31.36 and 113.94 ± 39.75 μm, respectively, using the replica technique and 28.97 ± 17.86 and 97.87 ± 21.83 μm, respectively, using OCT. The differences between the techniques were significant (p = 0.00 and p = 0.01, respectively). On evaluation within the groups, internal adaptation values were found to be significantly higher than the marginal adaptation values for the replica technique (p = 0.00) and OCT (p = 0.00). Therefore, the replica and OCT techniques showed different results, with higher values of marginal and internal adaptation found with the replica technique. Marginal and internal adaptation values of ceramic inlays, whether measured by replica or OCT techniques, were within clinically acceptable limits.

Abstract
Optical coherence tomography provides sections of tissues in a noncontact and noninvasive manner. The device measures the time delay and intensity of the light scattered or reflected from biological tissues, which results in tomographic imaging of their internal structure. This is achieved by scanning tissues at a resolution ranging from 1 to 15 μm. OCT enables real-time in situ imaging of tissues without the need for biopsy, histological procedures, or the use of X-rays, so it can be used in many fields of medicine. Its properties are not only particularly used in ophthalmology, in the diagnosis of all layers of the retina, but also increasingly in cardiology, gastroenterology, pulmonology, oncology, and dermatology. The basic properties of OCT, that is, noninvasiveness and low wattage of the used light, have also been appreciated in analytical technology by conservators, who use it to identify the quality and age of paintings, ceramics, or glass. Recently, the OCT technique of visualization is being tested in different fields of dentistry, which is depicted in the article.

Abstract
Fiber-reinforced composite (FRC), prostheses offer the potential advantages of optimized esthetics, low wear of the opposing dentition and the ability to bond the prosthesis to the abutment teeth, thereby compensating for less-than-optimal abutment tooth retention and resistance form. These prostheses are composed of two types of composite materials: Fiber-composites to build the substructure and hybrid or micro fill particulate composites to create the external veneer surface. This article reviews the various types of FRCs and its mechanical properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological alterations of radiation-related caries using optical coherence tomography. METHODS Thirty-six extracted teeth from 11 patients who had undergone radiotherapy were sectioned in the sagittal axis in the center of the carious lesion, and 100 μm thick sections were obtained from each specimen. One sample from each tooth was investigated by an optical coherence tomography (OCT) system, and the results were compared with histological images from polarized light microscopy. RESULTS In OCT dentin caries images, the demineralized area appeared as a white region, whereas the translucent zone appeared as a dark area, a similar pattern also seen in coronal caries. In noncavitated enamel lesions clinically observed as brown discoloration, the area of high porosity, and also the dark color, absorbs part of the light, resulting in a dark pattern. Finally, the involvement of dentin-enamel junction (DEJ) or cement-enamel junction (CEJ) could be clearly observed, when present and marked alterations along the CEJ could be noted, as junction continuity loss, gap formation, and mineral loss tissue. CONCLUSIONS The OCT technique was able to characterize radiation-related caries, from a morphological point of view. Also demonstrated was its potential benefit for use in the clinical monitoring of radiation-related carious process.
