”Hunger and rage (and the virus) are human things”: reflections on solidarity in times of Covid-19

ABSTRACT Objective To identify and reflect about civil society’s initiatives to curb hunger in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil. Methods In order to identify society’s initiatives to fight hunger, two independent systematic searches were conducted in the Google® search engine using the following keywords: “covid civil society initiatives” and “hunger pandemic solidarity campaign”. Results Fourteen nationwide civil society-promoted initiatives were identified, that among their objectives aimed at fostering collective funding to purchase and distribute foods. Conclusion Brazilian society has been historically sensitive to the hunger problem and shows solidarity as a social value. Nevertheless, the State is legally bound to provide food, as a social right.

[Qualitative research into the scientific production in the field of bioethics]

This article discusses the character and use of qualitative research methods in the field of bioethics. A systematic review of articles published in Latin American countries and selected from the SciELO database was conducted, with special emphasis on articles that employed qualitative research methodology. The set of articles reveals a field of bioethics composed of three distinct vectors. The first refers to the dual characterization of bioethics that can be defined as a social movement or as a discipline; the second differentiates bioethics from other fields of ethics, especially from predominantly deontology-based professional ethics; and the third is related to ethical approaches adopted in the analyses conducted in the research. A relatively insignificant part of these texts result from qualitative research and they can be divided into four categories according to their themes and guidelines: bioethics as a field and/or discourse; training in health; ethics, care, and clinical practice; formulation of health policy. The production shows, on the one hand, a relatively timid approach of social science researchers to the field of bioethics and, on the other hand, little use of qualitative methodologies in research in the field and, in some cases, a certain lack of precision regarding use of the methods.

Pesquisas qualitativas em nutrição e alimentação

O artigo revê e comenta os estudos qualitativos e os que fazem interlocução com as Ciências Sociais e Humanas na área de alimentação e nutrição. Selecionaram-se 93 artigos nas publicações registradas na base de dados do SciELO, de uma listagem geral obtida com as palavras chaves alimentação e nutrição. Classificaram-se os conteúdos em cinco assuntos: dimensões sociais, culturais, cognitivas e psicológicas da alimentação e nutrição; educação/orientação nutricional; análise e avaliação de políticas e programas de alimentação e nutrição; profissão, formação de recursos humanos e estudos teórico-metodológicos. São tecidas considerações sobre a pesquisa qualitativa nos marcos das Ciências Sociais e Humanas sobre cada um dos assuntos. Conclui-se que as pesquisas qualitativas ampliaram positivamente a interlocução da Nutrição com as Ciências Sociais e Humanas, embora requeiram aperfeiçoamento teórico-metodológico para superar os estudos descritivos, adequando o seu entendimento. Foram verificadas a forte presença da Revista de Nutrição e de periódicos das áreas de Saúde Pública/Saúde Coletiva; a concentração em alguns autores e a necessidade de apoiar a formação em Ciências Sociais e Humanas na Nutrição e incentivar a prática da multidisciplinaridade para aperfeiçoar aquelas pesquisas.
