Evaluation of the Recurrence Rate of Ingrown Toenail After a 45-Second Matrix Cauterization With Phenol

INTRODUCTION

Ingrown toenail is a very common nail disorder, and partial matricectomy by phenolization is considered the most effective treatment technique. However, the contact time of the phenol with the nail matrix remains debatable.

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the recurrence rate of ingrown toenail after partial matricectomy by phenol for 45 seconds.

METHODS

A total of 1,460 surgeries were performed, with a photographic record of 802 pictures for a period of 6 months. The presence of any nail spicule or sign of ingrowth during follow-up was considered a recurrence.

RESULTS

A total of 802 surgeries were evaluated, with the most affected nails being the right (49.3%) and left (48%) big toes and most frequently the lateral fold (54.5%). The recurrence rate was 0.75% at 3 months and 1.87% at 6 months, and the medial nail fold had a higher recurrence rate than the lateral nail fold.

CONCLUSION

Forty-five seconds of contact time of 88% phenol with the nail matrix was enough and effective, resulting in low recurrence rates. Prospective studies are needed to better assess postoperative morbidity.

Quality of life of women submitted to facial aesthetic myofunctional therapy - educational status influence

ABSTRACT Objective: to analyze the influence of educational status on the quality of life of women submitted to facial aesthetic myofunctional therapy. Methods: a self-controlled experimental clinical trial conducted at the Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade (Open University for Seniors - UNATI) of the Pontífica Universidade Católica (Pontifical Catholic University - PUC) of Goiás, Brazil. The 44 participating women, aged 50 to 65 years, were divided into group 1 (having completed middle or high school) and group 2 (with a higher education degree) and were submitted to aesthetic myofunctional therapy. Data analysis was made with the paired t-test, Levene test, t-test to compare the means of independent groups, and Spearman correlation, at the 5% significance level. Results: after the aesthetic myofunctional therapy, the wrinkles and orofacial myofunctional balance improved significantly in groups 1 and 2. The physical aspects and overall health status mean scores increased significantly in group 1, after the intervention. There was no statistically significant difference in the women’s quality of life between groups. The correlation between educational status and the quality-of-life domains was predominantly low. Conclusion: the educational status did not interfere with the quality of life of women submitted to aesthetic myofunctional therapy.

An overview about oxidation in clinical practice of skin aging

Free radicals are unstable chemical species, highly reactive, being formed by cellular entities of different tissues. Increased production of these species without proper effective action of endogenous and exogenous antioxidant systems, generates a condition of oxidative stress, potentially provider of skin disorders that extend from functional impairments (skin cancer, dermatitis, chronic and acute inflammatory processes) even aesthetic character, with the destruction of structural proteins and cellular changes with the appearance of stains, marks and lines of expressions and other signs inherent to the intrinsic and extrinsic skin aging process. The antioxidants are chemical substances commonly used in clinical practice for topical application and may contribute in the fight against the radical species responsible for many skin damage. This paper summarized the main evidence of the benefits brought by the topical application of antioxidants in the skin, considering the amplitude of the indicative performance of antioxidant activity by in vitro and ex-vivo tests as well as in vivo tests. It is recognized that a breadth of product performance tests should be explored to truly identify the effectiveness of antioxidant products for an anti-aging effect.

The role of orthodontics as an auxiliary tool to lip augmentation

In recent years, facial esthetics excellence has become a major focus in health professional offices and for the public worldwide. Among the main concerns of the patients is lip augmentation, since it has been associated with beauty and youth. This procedure has been increasingly performed and studied by dermatologists and plastic surgeons. Although good outcomes for lip augmentation have been achieved with different techniques, literature shows several complications and collateral effects. This paper demonstrates, through two clinical cases, how Orthodontics may be an excellent tool to assist in lip augmentation, highlighting the need for an interdisciplinary approach to enhance a more effective strategy to achieve facial esthetics goals.
