[The human accidents and their implications for functional communication: opinions of teachers and students about higher education]

Prevention of domestic child accidents: an educational intervention conducted by Speech Therapy trainees in a Family Health Care Unit

ABSTRACT Purpose: to check the effect of an educational intervention on the prevention of domestic child accidents, carried out by Speech Therapy trainees. Methods: an interventional research that uses primary research data. The action was done by two interns of Speech Therapy with 30 caregivers of children who attended a Family Health Unit. For the carrying out of the educational intervention, two pictures with images which represented objects and situations of risk of accidents were used. Two interview scripts were elaborated, which allowed to identify the caregivers’ personal data and their knowledge about the risks of child accidents in the domestic environment before and after carrying out of the educational intervention. Results: before the educational action, the caregivers identified 187 situations for child accidents, and after the intervention, 215 dangers were identified. Among the 30 caregivers who participated, 23 had significant changes in their answers and seven did not have any change in their knowledge. The main change was in relation to "Accidental poisoning-intoxication by exposure to harmful chemicals" and "The impact caused by an object thrown, projected or falling". Conclusion: the intervention promoted an increase in the participants’ correct reports, and it can be incorporated to the actions of accidents prevention carried out by the trainees and professionals of Speech Therapy who work in basic healthcare.

Factors associated with speech-language disorders in motorcycle accident victims

Purpose

To investigate factors associated with speech-language disorders in victims of motorcycle accidents.

Methods

This is a cross-sectional study. Victims of motorcycle accidents studied were treated at Hospital da Restauração between June and July 2014. The data were collected by consulting the records and direct interviews with these, at admission and after discharge. For analysis were raised single frequencies, average and chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. The margin of error used in the statistical tests was 5%, and the intervals were obtained with 95% reliability.

Results

99 individuals were studied, 90.9% male, the mean age of 32.7 years. It found a high percentage of 42.3% of drunk drivers and 51.5% were not enabled. The Head Injuries were present in 30.3% of cases. The most affected body area were the lower limbs (71.7%), followed by the head and face region (56.6%). It was also found that 30.3% had complaints of speech pathology after hospital discharge and a statistically significant association between speech therapy complaint and not enabled (p=0.012) and collisions between bikes (p=0.004).

Conclusion

There was a high percentage of lesions in the head and face resulting from accidents, associated mainly not eligible to drive bike and collisions between motorcycles, suggesting that these factors can aggravate injuries speech therapy.

Lesões craniofaciais decorrentes de acidentes por motocicleta: uma revisão integrativa

Resumo: Os acidentes de trânsito têm constituído um problema de saúde pública que mais cresce no Brasil e no mundo, com destaque para as motocicletas. Além dos altos índices de mortalidade, destacam-se também as lesões e sequelas causadas aos sobreviventes ao acidente. As lesões de face são comuns neste tipo de acidente, causando deformidades estéticas e funcionais no rosto, necessitando de reabilitação. Foi realizada uma busca na literatura para mapear as lesões na região craniofacial decorrentes de acidentes de trânsito por motocicleta, buscando também suas possíveis implicações para a Comunicação Humana. As bases de dados Pubmed, Lilacs e Scielo foram acessadas, selecionando os artigos pelos títulos, em seguida pelos resumos, para ao final selecionar os artigos para leitura na íntegra. Após este processo, foram selecionados 10 estudos para a revisão. Na região facial, as fraturas mais frequentes foram nos ossos da Mandíbula, Zigomático e Nasal, por serem os mais proeminentes na região. Destacaram-se os Traumas Cranianos como os tipos de lesões com maior gravidade, uma vez que podem levar ao óbito. Apesar do detalhamento das lesões, as sequelas e dados sobre a reabilitação dessas vítimas de acidentes por motocicletas foram raros na literatura.
