HIV/aids e meia idade: avaliação do conhecimento de indivíduos da região do Vale do Sinos (RS), Brasil

Oficinas educativas sobre HIV/Aids: uma proposta de intervenção para idosos

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a eficácia de uma oficina educativa sobre HIV/aids em um grupo de idosos. A população incluiu 471 indivíduos entre 60 e 91 anos composta principalmente por mulheres (83,1%). Procedeu-se a aplicação e reaplicação de um questionário organizado em cinco domínios, antes e após as oficinas. O teste de McNemar foi utilizado para comparar as respostas pré e pós-oficina (p<0,05) no programa estatístico STATA 12. Dentre os domínios, a maior variação (202,72%) ocorreu no domínio "conceito" sobre a fase assintomática da infecção. No domínio "transmissão", a variação foi de 168,53% para a transmissão do HIV por picada de mosquito. No domínio "prevenção", na questão sobre existência do preservativo feminino, a variação foi de 44%. O domínio "vulnerabilidade" indicou 34,93% na questão da aids relacionada a grupos específicos. No domínio "tratamento", a abordagem da cura para a aids obteve 50,85% de variação. A realização das oficinas demonstrou ser uma intervenção eficaz nos domínios "conceito", "transmissão", "prevenção", "vulnerabilidade" e "tratamento" nos idosos participantes da pesquisa.

O silêncio no cotidiano do adolescente com HIV/AIDS

Este estudo caracteriza-se por ser uma pesquisa qualitativa que objetivou desvelar a percepção e a vivência em relação ao tratamento antirretroviral do adolescente com síndrome da imunodeficiência adquirida. A pesquisa foi realizada em serviços de referência em dois municípios na região sul do Brasil. A produção dos dados foi desenvolvida com a dinâmica de criatividade e sensibilidade mapa falante, por cinco participantes. Foi aplicada a técnica de análise temática do conteúdo. Das produções artísticas e depoimentos emergiram o cotidiano do uso dos medicamentos e o silêncio do diagnóstico da doença e do tratamento que implicam o cuidado à saúde. Conclui-se que é necessário o envolvimento dos profissionais de saúde, possibilitando espaços para a família e promovendo diálogos desta com o adolescente, visando à adesão ao tratamento.

Enteric parasites in HIV-1/AIDS-infected patients from a Northwestern São Paulo reference unit in the highly active antiretroviral therapy era

INTRODUCTION: We describe the epidemiology of intestinal parasites in patients from an AIDS reference service in Northeastern São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS: Retrospective evaluation was done for all HIV-1/AIDS-positive patients whose Hospital de Base/São José do Rio Preto laboratorial analysis was positive for enteroparasites after diagnosis of HIV-1 infection, from January 1998 to December 2008. Statistical analysis was performed using the R statistical software version 2.4.1. The level of significance adopted was 5%. RESULTS: The most frequent protozoan was Isospora belli (4.2%), followed by Giardia lamblia (3.5%), Entamoeba coli (2.8%), and Cryptosporidium parvum (0.3%). Ancylostoma duodenale (1.4%) was the most frequently detected helminth, while Taenia saginata and Strongiloides stercoralis were found in 0.7% of the samples. The results showed that diarrhea was significantly associated with giardiasis and isosporiasis. However, no association was observed between CD4+ cell counts, viral load, and the characteristics of any particular parasite. CONCLUSIONS: Our data may be useful for further comparisons with other Brazilian regions and other developing countries. The data may also provide important clues toward improving the understanding, prevention, and control of enteric parasites around the world.

Perception of the risk of sexual transmission of HIV among Congolese and Japanese university students

OBJECTIVE

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most heavily affected by HIV infection. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of Congolese students of risk behaviors for sexual transmission of HIV in comparison with their Japanese counterparts.

METHODS

Of the 1,747 undergraduate students who participated in the survey, there were 1,326 respondents (752 Japanese, 574 Congolese) who voluntarily and fully filled out the auto-administered questionnaire.

RESULTS

The proportion of Congolese respondents who do not always use condoms with an occasional sex partner was significantly higher, 57%, as compared with their Japanese counterparts (15%; p < 0.001). Fewer than 40% (9.9-39.7%) of Congolese respondents had accurate knowledge about multiple sex partnership (MSP), men sex with men (MSM), precocious sex, and commercial sex work (CSW) being high-risk behaviors (p < 0.001) for the sexual transmission of HIV infection. However, the proportion of Congolese tested or willing to get tested for HIV was significantly higher (97.2%) than that in the Japanese group (72.4%, p < 0.001). In Congolese students, we observed an absence of adherence to preventive measures such as condom use with an occasional sex partner, and a greater proportion of students having inaccurate knowledge of major risk behaviors such as MSM, precocious sex, and MSP, compared with their Japanese counterparts.

CONCLUSIONS

This study showed that, though sexual contact remains the main mode of HIV transmission in the region, Congolese students tend to have inaccurate knowledge of risk behaviors that expose people to the sexual transmission of HIV. This suggests that continuous education targeting those risk behaviors is of great importance to reduce the spread of the HIV epidemic.
