Plasma nitriding under low temperature improves the endothelial cell biocompatibility of 316L stainless steel

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effects of the surface modification of 316L stainless steel (SS) by low-temperature plasma nitriding on endothelial cells for stent applications.

RESULTS

X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the incorporation of nitrogen into the treated steel. The surface treatment significantly increased SS roughness and hydrophilic characteristics. After 4 h the cells adhered to the nitride surfaces and formed clusters. During the 24 h incubation period, cell viability on the nitrided surface was higher compared to the polished surface. Nitriding reduced late apoptosis of rabbit aorta endothelial cell (RAEC) on the SS surface.

CONCLUSION

Low temperature plasma nitriding improved the biocompatible of stainless steel for use in stents.

Evaluation of ionic degradation and slot corrosion of metallic brackets by the action of different dentifrices

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the in vitro ionic degradation and slot base corrosion of metallic brackets subjected to brushing with dentifrices, through analysis of chemical composition by Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and qualitative analysis by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).

METHODS

Thirty eight brackets were selected and randomly divided into four experimental groups (n = 7). Two groups (n = 5) worked as positive and negative controls. Simulated orthodontic braces were assembled using 0.019 x 0.025-in stainless steel wires and elastomeric rings. The groups were divided according to surface treatment: G1 (Máxima Proteção Anticáries®); G2 (Total 12®); G3 (Sensitive®); G4 (Branqueador®); Positive control (artificial saliva) and Negative control (no treatment). Twenty eight brushing cycles were performed and evaluations were made before (T0) and after (T1) experiment.

RESULTS

The Wilcoxon test showed no difference in ionic concentrations of titanium (Ti), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni) between groups. G2 presented significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the concentration of aluminium ion (Al). Groups G3 and G4 presented significant increase (p < 0.05) in the concentration of aluminium ion. The SEM analysis showed increased characteristics indicative of corrosion on groups G2, G3 and G4.

CONCLUSION

The EDS analysis revealed that control groups and G1 did not suffer alterations on the chemical composition. G2 presented degradation in the amount of Al ion. G3 and G4 suffered increase in the concentration of Al. The immersion in artificial saliva and the dentifrice Máxima Proteção Anticáries® did not alter the surface polishing. The dentifrices Total 12®, Sensitive® and Branqueador® altered the surface polishing.

Citotoxicidade de soldas elétricas a ponto: estudo in vitro

OBJETIVO: o processo de solda envolve íons metálicos capazes de provocar lise celular. Diante disso, o objetivo deste estudo foi testar a hipótese de que existe citotoxicidade entre diferentes tipos de ligas (CrNi, TMA, NiTi) utilizadas em Ortodontia, submetidas à solda elétrica a ponto. MÉTODOS: três tipos de ligas foram avaliados neste estudo. Foram confeccionados 36 corpos de prova, 6 para cada combinação entre os fios, divididos em 6 grupos - grupo AA (aço com aço), grupo AT (aço com TMA), grupo AN (aço com NiTi), grupo TT (TMA com TMA), grupo TN (TMA com NiTi) e grupo NN (NiTi com NiTi) - que foram submetidos à solda a ponto para avaliação quanto ao possível efeito citotóxico nos tecidos bucais. Previamente, os corpos de prova foram limpos com álcool isopropílico e esterilizados em luz ultravioleta. O ensaio de citotoxicidade foi realizado utilizando-se cultura de células (linhagem L929, fibroblastos de camundongos), submetida ao teste para células viáveis em vermelho neutro ("dye-uptake") no tempo de 24h. A análise de variância e comparação múltipla (ANOVA) e teste de Tukey foram utilizados (p< 0,05). RESULTADOS: os resultados demonstraram que não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos experimentais (P> 0,05). Foi observada maior viabilidade celular no grupo TT, seguido dos grupos AT, TN, AA, NA e NN. CONCLUSÃO: pôde-se evidenciar que solda em fios de liga de NiTi causaram maior quantidade de lise celular. Soldas elétricas a ponto demonstraram pequena capacidade de causar lise celular.
