Abstract
Psidium brownianum Mart is reported in the literature by antinociceptive and antioxidant activities, indicating that this species' secondary metabolites might be used to control inflammatory processes. The present study aimed to characterize the topical antiedematogenic activity of the essential oil of Psidium brownianum Mart. (OEPB) in ear edema models by different inflammatory agents. Female Swiss mice (25-35 g) and Wistar albino rats (200-300 g) were used throughout tests (n=6/group) on acute or chronic edema models induced by single and multiple topical applications. The OEPB is administered topically pure or at a concentration of 100 or 200 mg/mL. The antiedematogenic mechanism of OEPB was analyzed by administering capsaicin, arachidonic acid, histamine, and phenol at the best effective dose (200 mg/mL). The results showed a significant reduction of edema-induced single (28.87 %) and multiple (50.13 %) applications of croton oil compared to the negative control group. Regarding potential mechanisms of action, OEPB (200 mg/mL) inhibited the development of edema triggered by capsaicin (29.95 %), arachidonic acid (22.66 %), phenol (23.35 %), and histamine (75.46 %), suggesting an interference with the histaminergic pathway. These results indicate that OEPB presents a topical antiedematogenic effect in acute and chronic murine models, possibly interfering with inflammatory pathways triggered by mediators such as histamine.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: Both laser therapy and eccentric exercises are used in tendon injuries. However, the association of these physiotherapeutic modalities is yet little investigated. Objective: To evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy associated to eccentric exercise (downhill walking) on Achilles tendinopathy of Wistar rats. Method: Eighteen Achilles tendon from 15 adult male Wistar rats were used. Tendons were distributed in six groups (laser, eccentric exercise, laser and eccentric exercise, rest, contralateral tendon, and healthy tendon). Unilateral tendinopathy was surgically induced by transversal compression followed by scarification of tendon fibers. The treatments laser therapy (904 nm, 3J/cm²) and/or eccentric exercise (downhill walking; 12 m/min; 50 min/day; 15o inclination treadmill) began 24 hours after surgery and remained for 20 days. Clinical and biomechanical analyzes were conducted. Achilles tendon was macroscopically evaluated and the transversal diameter measured. Euthanasia was performed 21 days after lesion induction. Tendons of both limbs were collected and frozen at -20°C until biomechanical analysis, on which the characteristic of maximum load (N), stress at ultimate (MPa) and maximum extension (mm) were analyzed. Results: Swelling was observed within 72 hours postoperative. No fibrous adhesions were observed nor increase in transversal diameter of tendons. Animals with the exercised tendons, but not treated with laser therapy, presented lower (p=0.0000) locomotor capacity. No difference occurred be-tween groups for the biomechanical characteristics maximum load (p=0.4379), stress at ultimate (p=0.4605) and maximum extension (p=0.3820) evaluated, even considering healthy and contralateral tendons. Conclusion: The concomitant use of low-level laser and the eccentric exercise of downhill walking, starting 24 hours after surgically induced tendinopathy, do not result in a tendon with the same biomechanical resistance or elasticity as a healthy tendon. On the other hand, it also does not influence negatively the structure and function of the Achilles tendon.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To standardize an experimental model of chronic monoarthritis induced by complete Freund's adjuvant appropriate for the analysis of the effect of walking on nociception and on joint edema. METHODS The following factors were evaluated as to monoarthritis induction: route and site of administration, number and interval of inoculations, Mycobacterium species, and animal gender. Wistar male and female rats (200 to 250g) received two injections of complete Freund's adjuvant containing Mycobacterium tuberculosis (1.0mg/mL; 50µL) or Mycobacterium butyricum (0.5mg/mL; 50µL) intra-articularly in the tibiotarsal or tibiofemoral joints, or an injection of complete Freund's adjuvant (Mycobacterium butyricum or tuberculosis) intradermally at the base of the tail and another intra-articularly (tibiotarsal or tibiofemoral). The animals were submitted to evaluations of articular disability and edema. Articular disability was assessed by paw elevation time (in seconds) during the one-minute walk test. Edema of the tibiofemoral joint was assessed by variation of joint diameter (cm). Tibiotarsal joint edema was measured by the volume of the paw (mL). RESULTS Administration of complete Freund's adjuvant containing Mycobacterium butyricum increased paw elevation time and edema in both joints. CONCLUSIONS These data allow standardization of an animal model of chronic monoarthritis adequate for analysis of the effects of exercise on treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.

Abstract
OBJETIVO: Avaliar a eficácia do exercício físico (natação e salto) atuando na redução do quadro álgico de ratos submetidos a um modelo experimental de ciatalgia. MÉTODOS: 24 ratos Wistar foram divididos em quatro grupos: grupo Placebo (GP), grupo Natação (GN), grupo Natação 10% (GN10) e grupo Salto (GS). Todos os grupos foram submetidos ao modelo de ciatalgia e avaliados em relação à dor pós-exercício pelo teste de incapacidade funcional e pelo filamento de Von Frey. RESULTADOS: Na comparação intragrupos houve diferenças significativas, para todos os grupos, nos momentos pós-lesão comparados com o pré-lesão, por ambos os instrumentos de avaliação. Com o filamento de Von Frey observou-se diferença significativa nos grupos GN10 e GS nos momentos finais de avaliação. Na comparação intergrupos não houve diferenças significativas com nenhum instrumento de avaliação. CONCLUSÃO: O tratamento com exercício físico não foi eficaz para reduzir o quadro álgico de ratos submetidos à ciatalgia.

Abstract
A aterosclerose é um processo inflamatório crônico e degenerativo que acomete os vasos, sendo caracterizada pelo acúmulo de lipídeos no espaço subendotelial da íntima, acúmulo de células inflamatórias e elementos fibrosos. A oxidação de LDL-c parece ser o principal evento para o início da aterosclerose. O exercício físico aeróbio melhora os sistemas de defesa orgânicos contra aterosclerose, diminuindo o estresse oxidativo e aumentando a síntese de enzimas antioxidantes; aumento da vasodilatação via óxido nítrico (NO) e óxido nítrico sintase endotelial (eNOS) e diminuição da inflamação sistêmica com produção de citocinas pró-inflamatórias e aumento de fatores anti-inflamatórios. Porém, de maneira aguda, o exercício aeróbio de alta intensidade aumenta o risco de desenvolvimento de eventos cardiovasculares e, de forma crônica, pode atuar negativa ou positivamente na prevenção do processo aterosclerótico.
