Abstract
BACKGROUND Because of to the removal of subclassification of papillary renal cell carcinoma (pRCC), the survival prognostification of localized pRCC after surgical treatment became inadequate. Sarcopenia was widely evaluated and proved to be a predictive factor for prognosis in RCC patients. Therefore, we comprehensively investigated the survival prediction of the body composition parameters for localized pRCC. METHODS Patients pathologically diagnosed with pRCC between February 2012 and February 2022 in our center were enrolled. The body composition parameters, including skeletal muscle index (SMI), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and perirenal adipose tissue (PRAT), were measured by the images of preoperative computed tomography (CT). The primary outcome was set as progression-free survival (PFS), and the cutoff values of body composition parameters were calculated by using the Youden from receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) curves. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional regression analyses were performed to explore independent risk factors for survival prediction. Then, significant factors were used to construct a prognostic nomogram. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated by Harrell's C-index, calibration curves and time-dependent ROC curves. RESULTS A total of 105 patients were enrolled for analysis. With a median follow-up time of 30.48 months, 25 (23.81%) patients experienced cancer progression. The percentage of sarcopenia was 74.29%. Univariate Cox analysis identified that gender, PRAT, SAT, skeletal muscle (SM), sarcopenia, surgical technique, and tumor diameter were associated with progression. Further multivariate analysis showed that sarcopenia (hazard ratio [HR] 0.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.03-0.66), SAT (HR 6.36, 95% CI 2.39-16.93), PRAT (HR 4.66, 95% CI 1.77-12.27), tumor diameter (HR 0.35, 95% CI 0.14-0.86), and surgical technique (HR 2.85, 95% CI 1.06-7.64) were independent risk factors for cancer progression. Then, a prognostic nomogram based on independent risk factors was constructed and the C-index for progression prediction was 0.831 (95% CI 0.761-0.901), representing a reasonable discrimination, the calibration curves, and the time-dependent ROC curves verified the good performance of the nomogram. CONCLUSIONS A prognostic nomogram, including sarcopenia, SAT, PRAT, tumor diameter, and surgical technique, was constructed to calculate the probability of progression for localized pRCC patients and needs further external validation for clinical use in the future.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the impact of preoperative body composition in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) undergoing surgical treatment. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective study of 52 patients with RCC undergoing total or partial nephrectomy. Body composition assessment was performed using the body mass index, together with computed tomography analysis at the level of the third lumbar vertebra to measure the area of visceral adipose tissue, as well as the area and density of skeletal muscle mass. Results Malnutrition, obesity and inadequate skeletal muscle gauge (SMG) were associated with higher hospital length of stay (p = 0.028, p = 0.02 and p = 0.012, respectively). Although the rates of postoperative symptoms and readmissions were low, survival was better among the patients with an adequate SMG than among those with an inadequate SMG (p = 0.003). Conclusion Among patients with RCC undergoing surgical treatment, preoperative body composition does not seem to be associated with the rates of perioperative complications, although an inadequate SMG seems to be associated with worse overall survival.

Abstract
Background & aims Evidence regarding the prevalence of pre-treatment sarcopenia and its impact on survival in patients with hematological malignancies (HM) varies across studies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize this discrepancy. Methods PubMed, Embase and Cochrane library were systematically searched for relevant studies. Outcomes assessed were: prevalence of pre-treatment sarcopenia, overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS) and complete response (CR). Weighted mean proportion, odds ratios (ORs) and hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated using a fixed-effects and a random-effects model. Results A total of 27 retrospective cohort studies involving 4,991 patients were included in this study. The prevalence of pre-treatment sarcopenia was 37.0% (95% CI: 32.0%-42.0%) in HM patients <60 years and 51.0% (95% CI: 45.0%-57.0%) in≥60 years. Patients with leukemia had the lowest prevalence, compared with those with other HM (38.0%; 95% CI: 33.0%-43.0%; P = 0.010). The presence of sarcopenia was independently associated with poor OS (HR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.41-1.75) and PFS (HR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.22-1.83) throughout treatment period, which may be partially attributed to decreased CR (OR = 0.54, 95% CI = 0.41-0.72), particularly for BMI ≥ 25 (P = 0.020) and males (P = 0.020). Conclusion Sarcopenia is highly prevalent in patients with HM and an adverse prognostic factor for both survival and treatment efficacy. HM and sarcopenia can aggravate each other. We suggest that in future clinical work, incorporating sarcopenia into risk scores will contribute to guide patient stratification and therapeutic strategy, particularly for the elderly. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) predicts relevant clinical outcomes in oncologic patients. The purpose of this study was to perform a meta-analysis of data regarding associations between LSMM and treatment response (TR) in oncology. METHODS MEDLINE, Cochrane, and SCOPUS databases were screened for relationships between LSMM and TR in oncologic patients up to November 2022. Overall, 35 studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS The collected 35 studies comprised 3858 patients. In 1682 patients (43.6%), LSMM was diagnosed. In the overall sample, LSMM predicted a negatively objective response rate (ORR), OR = 0.70, 95% CI = (0.54-0.91), p = 0.007, and disease control rate (DCR), OR = 0.69, 95% CI = (0.50-0.95), p = 0.02. In the curative setting, LSMM predicted a negatively ORR, OR = 0.24, 95% CI = (0.12-0.50), p = 0.0001, but not DCR, OR = 0.60, 95% CI = (0.31-1.18), p = 0.14. In palliative treatment with conventional chemotherapies, LSMM did not predict ORR: OR = 0.94, 95% CI (0.57-1.55), p = 0.81, and DCR: OR = 1.13, 95% CI (0.38-3.40), p = 0.82. In palliative treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKI), LSMM did not predict TR: ORR, OR = 0.74, 95% CI (0.44-1.26), p = 0.27, and DCR, OR = 1.04, 95% CI (0.53-2.05), p = 0.90. In palliative immunotherapy, LSMM tended to predict ORR, OR = 0.74, 95% CI = (0.54-1.01), p = 0.06, and predicted DCR, OR = 0.53, 95% CI = (0.37-0.76), p = 0.0006. CONCLUSION LSMM is a risk factor for poor TR in curative chemotherapy in the adjuvant and/or neoadjuvant setting. LSMM is a risk factor for treatment failure in treatment with immunotherapy. Finally, LSMM does not influence TR in palliative treatment with conventional chemotherapy and/or TKIs. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the relationship between body muscle and adipose tissue composition in clear cell renal cell carcinoma patients with PBRM1 gene mutation. METHODS Cancer Genome Atlas Kidney clear cell renal cell carcinoma and Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium clear cell renal cell carcinoma collections were retrieved from the Cancer Imaging Archive. A total of 291 clear cell renal cell carcinoma patients were included in the study retrospectively. Patients' characteristics were obtained from Cancer Imaging Archive. Body composition was assessed with abdominal computed tomography using the automated artificial intelligence software (AID-U™, iAID Inc., Seoul, Korea). Body composition parameters of the patients were calculated. To investigate the net effect of body composition, the propensity score matching procedure was applied over age, gender, and T-stage parameters. RESULTS Of the patients, 184 were males and 107 were females. Mutations in the PBRM1 gene were detected in 77 of the patients. While there was no difference in adipose tissue areas between the PBRM1 mutation group and those without PBRM1 mutation, statistically significant differences were found in normal attenuated muscle area parameters. CONCLUSION This study shows that there was no difference between adipose tissue areas in patients with PBMR1 mutation, but normal attenuated muscle area was found to be higher in PBRM1 patients.

Abstract
Background Postoperative outcomes for patients suffering from resectable esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) are related to sarcopenia. In patients with resectable ESCC, this study investigated the link between sarcopenia and postoperative pneumonia. Methods The McKewon procedure was the only one used to treat resectable ESCC patients from January 2018 to December 2021 in this retrospective analysis. Sarcopenia was assessed using skeletal muscles at L3 and planning CT scans. It was defined when PMI was below 6.36 cm2/m2 and 3.92 cm2/m2 for men and women, separately. Analyses of multivariate and univariate logistic regression were applied for identifying the risk factors for postoperative pneumonia. Results The study included 773 patients with resectable ESCC in total. Sarcopenia was an independent risk factor for postoperative pneumonia in individuals with resectable ESCC based on univariate and multivariate analysis (P < 0.05). The stratified analysis indicated that neither of the clinical outcomes in the logistic regression model were affected by gender, age, BMI, smoking, or pre-albumin (P for interaction > 0.006). Conclusion Following the McKewon procedure, patients with resectable ESCC who were sarcopenic had a higher postoperative pneumonia rate. To prevent the development of postoperative pneumonia during the perioperative period, it may be important to control the incidence of sarcopenia.

Abstract
Purpose Sarcopenia is associated with decreased survival and increased complications in patients with renal cell carcinoma. Readily identifying patients with low muscle composition that may experience worse outcomes or would benefit from preoperative intervention is of clinical interest. Traditional body composition analysis methods are resource intensive; therefore, linear segmentation with routine imaging has been proposed as a clinically practical alternative. This study assesses linear segmentation's prognostic utility in nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma. Materials and Methods A single institution retrospective analysis of patients that underwent nephrectomy for nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma from 2005-2021 was conducted. Linear segmentation of the bilateral psoas/paraspinal muscles was completed on preoperative imaging. Total muscle area and total muscle index associations with overall survival were determined by multivariable analysis. Results 532 (388 clear cell) patients were analyzed, with median (IQR) total muscle index of 28.6cm2/m2 (25.8-32.5) for women and 33.3cm2/m2 (29.1-36.9) for men. Low total muscle index was associated with decreased survival (HR=1.96, 95% CI 1.32-2.90, p<0.001). Graded increases in total muscle index were associated with better survival (HR=0.95, 95% CI 0.92-0.99, p=0.006). Conclusions Linear segmentation, a clinically feasible technique to assess muscle composition, has prognostic utility in patients with localized renal cell carcinoma, allowing for incorporation of muscle composition analysis into clinical decision-making. Muscle mass determined by linear segmentation was associated with overall survival in patients with nonmetastatic renal cell carcinoma.

Abstract
Background This study aimed to determine the prognostic value of the sarcopenia on the progression free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) of esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) patients who received radiotherapy (RT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Methods Data on clinicopathological characteristics and nutritional parameters were analyzed and correlated with PFS and OS, retrospectively. Skeletal muscle, subcutaneous, visceral and total fat tissue cross-sectional areas were evaluated on CT images at the midpoint of the 3rd lumbar vertebrae. A total of 213 patients were enrolled in this study. Results Sarcopenia was significantly associated with subcutaneous fat content. The univariate analysis demonstrated that OS was superior in patients with non-sarcopenia, non-alcohol, NRI ≥ 100, albumin ≥ 40 g/L, TATI > 83.0, SATI > 27.8, VATI > 49, non-anemia, cervical and upper-thoracic ESCC, T stage 1–2, N stage 0–1 and TNM stage I–II. In the multivariate analysis, sarcopenia, albumin, N stage and TNM stage were identified as independent prognostic factors of survival. This study demonstrated that sarcopenia was related to worse PFS and OS in patients with ESCC who received RT or CRT. Conclusions Sarcopenia is considered to be a useful predictor in patients with ESCC who received RT or CRT. This study also provided a conceptual basis for further prospective research on the application of the sarcopenia for patients receiving RT or CRT for intermediate- and advanced-stage ESCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is the loss of skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and is a sign of cancer cachexia. Patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) may show cachexia.
AIM To evaluate the amount of SMM in male clear cell RCC (ccRCC) patients with and without collateral vessels.
METHODS In this study, we included a total of 124 male Caucasian patients divided into two groups: ccRCCa group without collateral vessels (n = 54) and ccRCCp group with collateral vessels (n = 70). Total abdominal muscle area (TAMA) was measured in both groups using a computed tomography imaging-based approach. TAMA measures were also corrected for age in order to rule out age-related effects.
RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of TAMA (P < 0.05) driven by a reduction in patients with peritumoral collateral vessels. The result was confirmed by repeating the analysis with values corrected for age (P < 0.05), indicating no age effect on our findings.
CONCLUSION This study showed a decreased TAMA in ccRCC patients with peritumoral collateral vessels. The presence of peritumoral collateral vessels adjacent to ccRCC might be a fine diagnostic clue to sarcopenia.

Abstract
Background Prognostic nutritional index (PNI) is a parameter which reflects nutritional and inflammatory status. The prognostic value of PNI in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) remains in debate. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value and clinicopathological features of PNI in RCC. Methods A literature search was performed in the databases of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library. Hazard ratios (HRs), odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted for meta-analysis. The association between PNI and overall survival (OS), cancer-specific survival (CSS), disease-free survival (DFS), progression-free survival (PFS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and clinicopathological factors were evaluated. Results Eleven studies involving 7,629 patients were included for meta-analysis. A decreased PNI was shown to be a significant predictor of worse OS (HR = 2.00, 95%CI = 1.64–2.42, p<0.001), CSS (HR = 2.54, 95%CI = 1.61–4.00, p<0.001), and DFS/PFS/RFS (HR = 2.12, 95%CI = 1.82–2.46, p<0.001) in RCC. Furthermore, a low PNI was correlated with Fuhrman grade III-IV (OR = 1.96, 95%CI = 1.27–3.02, p = 0.002), T stage T3-T4 (OR = 2.21, 95%CI = 1.27–3.87, p = 0.005), presence of sarcomatoid differentiation (OR = 5.00, 95%CI = 2.52–9.92, p<0.001), and presence of tumor necrosis (OR = 3.63, 95%CI = 2.54–5.19, p<0.001). Conclusion PNI is an independent prognostic indicator of survival and associated with Fuhrman grade, T stage, sarcomatoid differentiation, and tumor necrosis in patients with RCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) occurs frequently in the elderly, of whom the prognosis is dismal. Sarcopenia is a progressive and generalized skeletal muscle disorder associated with an increased possibility of adverse outcomes. This study aims to explore the prognostic value of sarcopenia in AML patients and develop a novel prognostic model. METHODS A total of 227 AML patients were enrolled. Body composition was assessed by bioelectrical impedance analysis before treatment. Sarcopenia was diagnosed by low muscle quantity. Cox proportional hazard regression model were applied to verify prognostic variables for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). A novel prognostic model of nomogram was developed and validated by 'R'. RESULTS Forty-one (18.1%) patients were defined as sarcopenia. The median age of the sarcopenic group was significantly greater than the non-sarcopenic group (median 70 vs. 64 years, P = 0.001). Sarcopenic patients showed significantly less height (P = 0.002), weight (P <0.001), Body Mass Index (P <0.001), Fat Mass (P = 0.017), Fat-free Mass (P <0.001), Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass (P <0.001), Skeletal Muscle Index (P <0.001), Fat-free Mass Index (P <0.001), and hemoglobin level (P = 0.025) than the non-sarcopenic ones. Patients in the sarcopenic group also showed a statistically shorter OS and DFS (median OS: 13.7 vs. 55.6 months, P = 0.003; median DFS: 12.5 months vs. not reached, P = 0.026). ELN high risk [Hazard Ratio (HR): 1.904, 95% Confidence Interval (CI): 1.018-3.562, P = 0.044), sarcopenia (HR: 1.887, 95% CI: 1.071-3.324, P = 0.028), and reduced-intensity regimens (HR: 3.765, 95% CI: 1.092-12.980, P = 0.036) were independent predictors for OS in multivariate analysis. A nomogram for predicting OS was constructed using the above three factors. The c index, calibration plots and decision curve analyses (DCA) showed better discrimination, calibration, and net benefits of the nomogram than the ELN model. CONCLUSION Sarcopenia was common and had an inferior prognosis in AML and needs more attention in clinical practice.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) such as nivolumab has enabled outcomes for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) to be improved. However, only around 25% of patients respond to these therapies without being able to formally identify them. Data on relevant predictive markers are still lacking. The obesity paradox has been shown as a relevant prognostic marker in mRCC with better outcomes for obese patients. Nevertheless, the impact of weight variation and the presence of sarcopenia during ICI treatment is not known for now. METHODS In a retrospective study, weight and its variations were collected at first day of ICI and at 6 weeks of treatment. Scanographic imagery was used to define the skeletal muscle index (SMI) as a reflect of sarcopenia. The impact of these parameters as predictive and prognostic factors for mRCC with nivolumab was evaluated. RESULTS A higher body mass index (BMI) at baseline was significantly associated with response at the first scan (p = 0.036). Longer overall survival (OS) was observed for patients with a weight gain compared to the group with weight loss (p = 0.00028). Median OS for sarcopenic patients was 17.2 months and 31.6 months for the non-sarcopenic group of patients, but there was no statistical difference. CONCLUSION This trial showed that a higher BMI and weight gain during nivolumab treatment were good predictive markers for outcomes in mRCC with nivolumab. Sarcopenia and variations in SMI could thus be of interest, but further studies are required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a condition characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass associated with worse clinical outcomes in cancer patients. Data on sarcopenia in patients undergoing immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) therapy are still limited. The aim of this prospective observational study was to investigate the relationship between sarcopenia, ICI treatment response and immunological profile, in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS Forty-seven stage IV NSCLC patient candidates for starting ICI, were enrolled from the Policlinico Umberto I outpatient Oncology. Patients underwent baseline blood test, inflammatory markers, cytokine assessment and body composition with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Sarcopenia was defined with appendicular skeletal muscle mass over height2 (ASM/heigh2). RESULTS Overall, 19/47 patients (40.4%) results were sarcopenic. Sarcopenic patients showed significantly shorter PFS than non-sarcopenic ones (20.3 weeks, 95% CI 7.5-33.1 vs. 61 weeks, 95% CI 22.5-99.4, p = 0.047). Specifically, they had an 8.1 times higher risk of progression disease (PD) than non-sarcopenic patients (OR 8.1, 95%, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenic patients showed worse PFS and had a higher risk of PD compared to non-sarcopenic ones. Therefore, sarcopenia may reflect the increased metabolic activity of more aggressive tumors, which involves systemic inflammation and muscle wasting and could be considered a negative predictive factor for ICI response.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate the impact of sarcopenia and myosteatosis on urinary incontinence after prostatectomy. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed consecutive patients who underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy without nerve sparing between December 2012 and March 2019. Psoas muscle index and average total psoas density, which were measured on preoperative computed tomography images at level L3, were used to evaluate sarcopenia and myosteatosis, respectively. In addition, several magnetic resonance imaging variables associated with pelvic muscles, the urethra and the prostate were measured. Urinary continence was defined as non-use or use of just one incontinence pad per day. Logistic regression analyses aimed to identify the predictors of urinary incontinence 3 and 12 months after surgery. RESULTS Overall, 121 patients were included in the analysis. The incidence rates of urinary incontinence 3 and 12 months after surgery were 42% (51/121 cases) and 16% (19/121 cases), respectively. Logistic multivariable analysis showed that low average total psoas density was the only significant independent predictor of urinary incontinence 3 months after surgery (P < 0.01), and low obturator internus muscle thickness (P = 0.01), short membranous urethral length (P = 0.01) and low average total psoas density (P < 0.01) were significant independent predictors of urinary incontinence 12 months after surgery. By contrast, psoas muscle index was not statistically associated with urinary incontinence after surgery. CONCLUSIONS Myosteatosis (low average total psoas density) could be a novel predictor of urinary incontinence after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Sarcopenia is known to affect perioperative and oncologic outcomes in patients with different urological malignancies. Nevertheless, the use of pretreatment sarcopenia as a predictor of clinical outcomes in patients with prostate cancer is still poorly studied. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a systematic review summarizing the available evidence and identifying the prognostic value of sarcopenia in prostate cancer patients. RECENT FINDINGS Sarcopenia was not predictive of biochemical recurrence in patients treated with radical prostatectomy. However, it was associated with worse long-term survival outcomes as well as the likelihood of developing postoperative complications after radical prostatectomy. In the context of radiotherapy, sarcopenia was a predictive factor for overall survival. In patients with hormone-sensitive prostate cancer treated with androgen deprivation, sarcopenia was associated with overall and cancer-specific survival. In patients with castration-resistant prostate cancer, sarcopenia was associated with poorer tolerance to docetaxel-based chemotherapy. SUMMARY Most studies found sarcopenia to be a predictor for worse perioperative and oncologic outcomes in patients treated with radical surgery, radiotherapy, or systemic therapy for prostate cancer. However, there is significant heterogeneity across the studies in terms of sarcopenia definition. For a better understanding of the prognostic value of sarcopenia in patients with prostate cancer, large-scale prospective studies are needed.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an age-related loss of skeletal muscle associated with adverse outcomes such as falls, fractures, disability, and increased mortality in older people and hospitalized patients. About half of older male nursing home residents have sarcopenia. The diagnostic criteria by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) and the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) have led to increased interest in sarcopenia. Exercise and nutritional management are crucial for the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia. Nutritional therapy for sarcopenia that includes 20 g of whey protein and 800 IU of vitamin D twice a day improves lower limb strength. Exercise therapy for sarcopenia, such as resistance training and 6 months of home exercises, improves muscle strength and physical function. Combination therapy that includes both nutritional and exercise therapy improves gait speed and knee extension strength more than either exercise alone or nutrition therapy alone. Excessive bedrest and mismanagement of nutrition in medical facilities can lead to iatrogenic sarcopenia. Iatrogenic sarcopenia is sarcopenia caused by the activities of health care workers in health care facilities. Appropriate nutritional management and exercise programs through rehabilitation nutrition are important for prevention and treatment of iatrogenic sarcopenia. Nutritional and exercise therapy should be started very early after admission and adjusted to the level of inflammation and disease status. Repeated assessment, diagnosis, goal setting, interventions, and monitoring using the rehabilitation nutrition care process is important to maximize treatment effectiveness and improve patients' functional recovery and quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Besides pulmonary dysfunctions, patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) also frequently have systemic comorbidities. Among these, sarcopenia is associated with worse pulmonary function and clinical outcomes. Patients with acute exacerbated COPD (AECOPD) have increased systemic inflammation, which can intensify muscle dysfunction. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in AECOPD patients and assess the associated factors and their prognostic value. As a secondary aim, we also assessed the performance of calf circumference (CC) to diagnose this condition. METHODS Prospective cohort study in a Brazilian public hospital with AECOPD patients. Sarcopenia was assessed according to the recommendations from the European Working Group of Sarcopenia in Older People Consensus 2 (EWGSOP2); namely, reduced handgrip strength (HGS) combined with low fat-free mass index (FFMI) or CC. Data on clinical, nutritional, and sociodemographic features were collected. The evaluated clinical outcomes were the length of hospital stay (LOS), admission in intensive care units (ICUs), and in-hospital death. RESULTS Among 208 patients (54.8% females, 67.6 ± 10.1 years) evaluated, 16.3% presented sarcopenia. Malnutrition (odds ratio [OR] = 16.50, 95% confidence interval [CI] 3.58-76.08), and disease stages III-IV (OR = 4.05 95%CI 1.20-13.76) were associated with the presence of sarcopenia. The CC showed satisfactory performance in diagnosing sarcopenia as compared to FFMI as a marker of reduced muscle mass (kappa = 0.703; area under the receiver operating characteristic [AUC ROC] curve = 0.886; 95%CI 0.811-0.961). Sarcopenia was not associated with clinical outcomes. CONCLUSION Almost 20% of patients in this study presented sarcopenia. Malnutrition and advanced Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) stage were associated with increased chances of this condition in AECOPD patients. Reduced HSG combined with low CC may be an alternative when FFMI not be obtained for sarcopenia diagnosis.
