Abstract
OBJECTIVE The demand for esthetics has increased in today's world and most parents prefer to preserve their children's primary anterior teeth until their natural exfoliation. However, an intracanal post is required to provide retention for reconstruction of severely damaged anterior teeth due to caries or trauma. Various materials and methods may be used for the fabrication of intracanal posts. This study assessed the fracture strength and fracture mode of primary canine teeth reconstructed with prefabricated and customized polyethylene and glass fiber posts. MATERIALS AND METHODS This in vitro study evaluated 60 extracted primary canine teeth in four groups (n = 15). After pulpectomy and post space preparation with 4 mm depth, composite resin post, prefabricated glass fiber post (Whitepost), customized glass fiber post (Interlig), or customized polyethylene fiber post (Ribbond) were placed in the root canals to provide retention, and the tooth crown was restored with bulk-fill composite resin. The fracture strength was then measured in a universal testing machine. The fracture mode was also evaluated visually. RESULTS The mean fracture strength was 22.45 ± 5.06, 33.10 ± 8.5, 30.20 ± 7.33, and 32.61 ± 5.73 N/mm2 in the composite resin post, Whitepost, Interlig, and Ribbond groups, respectively. The fracture strength was significantly lower in the composite group than in the remaining three groups (p = 0.000). No other significant differences were found (p > 0.05). Also, no significant difference was observed among the study groups in the fracture mode (p = 0.241). CONCLUSION The composite resin post yielded a significantly lower fracture strength than the prefabricated and customized glass and polyethylene fiber posts, but the fracture mode was not significantly different among the four groups.

Abstract
Purpose This study investigated the fracture resistance and failure modes of custom-fabricated post- and core dental restorations using various CAD/CAM materials. Materials and Methods Seventy-five mandibular second premolars were allocated to five groups (n = 15) and prepared for standardized post and core restorations. The groups included a control group comprising cast metal and four CAD/CAM materials: Vita Enamic, Shofu HC, Trilor, and PEKK. Fracture resistance was assessed using a compressive force at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure occurred. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi-square tests. Results The metal group had the highest fracture resistance (244.41 ± 75.20 N), with a significant variance compared to that in the CAD/CAM groups (p < 0.001). No significant differences were observed among the non-metallic groups. Conclusions While several CAD/CAM materials displayed satisfactory flexural properties, cast metal posts showed superior fracture resistance in endodontically treated teeth but were mostly associated with catastrophic failure. The clinical application of CAD/CAM materials for post-core restorations presents a viable alternative to traditional metal posts, potentially reducing the risk of unfavorable fractures.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to assess the effect of length of the relocated cervical margin with casting post and core (CP), prefabricated fiber post and composite core (PFP), and polyethylene fiber-reinforced composite (PEFRC) on fracture resistance and marginal integrity. Materials and Methods In this in vitro study, 70 sound human maxillary premolars were divided into seven groups according to the type of post and core system and length of the relocated cervical margin (n = 10): control (no preparation), PFP-3, PEFRC-3, CP-3 with 3 mm of cervical margin relocation (CMR), PFP-6, PEFRC-6, and CP-6 (with 6 mm of CMR). The samples were restored with zirconia crowns (except the control group). Epoxy resin replicas were fabricated before and after thermomechanical loading. Marginal integrity was assessed at the luting cement-core, core-tooth, and luting cement-enamel interfaces under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) (×200). Fracture resistance and failure mode were subsequently assessed. Data were analyzed by independent t-test, paired t-test, ANOVA, Tukey-Games Howell, Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney with Bonferroni correction, and Fisher-Freeman-Halton tests (α = 0.05). Results The marginal integrity of the groups with 3 mm of CMR followed the following order: PEFRC > PFP > CP at all interfaces (P < 0.05). In 6-mm CMR groups, this order was CP < PFP = PEFRC at the luting cement-core and (CP < PEFRC) = PFP at the core-tooth interface. No significant difference was found in fracture resistance when comparing the 3-mm CMR groups with each other (P > 0.05). PFP-6 showed higher FR than CP-6 (P < 0.001). PEFRC-6 had no significant difference with PFP-6 and CP-6 (P > 0.05). In each post and core system, 3-mm CMR groups showed higher marginal integrity and fracture resistance (P < 0.05). Conclusion Increasing the length of the relocated cervical margin decreased the marginal integrity and fracture resistance of all three systems of CP, PFP, and PEFRC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to compare the fracture resistance and the mode of failure of endodontically treated permanent mandibular premolars restored with two types of posts: diamond posts and glass-fiber posts. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty human mandibular premolars indicated for orthodontic extraction were collected for this study and were similar in shape, size, and length. The teeth were sectioned horizontally, 1 mm above the cementoenamel junction. Root canal treatment was carried out on all specimens, and obturation was done by lateral condensation. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups. The post space was prepared in the first group to receive the diamond posts and in the second group to receive the fiber posts. A dual-cure resin material was used for cementing the posts and building up the cores. Then, they were subjected to a compressive load at a cross-head speed of 1 mm per minute and at an angle of 135 degrees to the long axis of the tooth until a fracture occurred using a universal testing machine. Fracture resistance and the mode of failure were assessed. The fracture above the acrylic block level was considered favorable, and the fracture below the acrylic block level was considered unfavorable. The data were analyzed statistically. The statistical analysis of fracture resistance between the two groups was carried out with a t-test. The statistical analysis for the failure mode of the teeth was carried out with a chi-square test. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference showing that the diamond posts had better fracture resistance when compared with glass-fiber posts, while there was no statistically significant difference in terms of the failure mode between the two posts. CONCLUSION Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that diamond posts showed higher fracture resistance than glass-fiber posts. Glass-fiber posts showed more favorable failure modes but were statistically insignificant compared to diamond posts.

Abstract
Objectives The present study aimed to assess the effect of ferrule location on fracture resistance of maxillary premolars. Materials and Methods A total of 72 extracted human maxillary premolars were selected and randomly assigned to six groups (n = 12 in each) considering ferrule location: circumferential ferrule (CF), without ferrule (WF), buccal ferrule (BF), lingual ferrule (LF), mesial ferrule (MF), and buccal-lingual ferrule (BLF). Cast posts were cemented into the prepared post spaces. Following conventional impression, Ni-Cr crowns were cemented to the specimens. After thermocycling (5,000 cycles, 5-55°C), the specimens were loaded at 45° in a universal testing machine until fracture. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA, Kolmogorov-Smirnov, and Tamhane tests. Results The maximum and minimum mean fracture resistance were related to the CF (1,143.84 N) and WF (514.89 N) groups, respectively, (P = 0.039). Fracture resistance in the BF (933.67 N) and BLF (874.01 N) groups was significantly higher than in the MF group (617.54 N) (P = 0.001). There was no significant difference between the MF, LF (722.89 N), and WF groups in terms of fracture resistance (P > 0.05). Conclusion Teeth with CF showed maximum fracture resistance. The location of the ferrule effects on the fracture resistance of maxillary premolars and also the mode of failure.

Abstract
PURPOSE The present meta-analysis aimed to answer the following research question: In endodontically treated teeth (ETT), what is the effect of partial ferrule (PF) on fracture resistance compared to complete ferrule (CF) and/or no ferrule (NF)? STUDY SELECTION PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for relevant studies published until May 20, 2022. In vitro studies that compared the effect of partial ferrule with that of complete ferrule and/or no ferrule on fracture resistance of ETT were included. The studies were assessed for risk of bias, and a meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS Seventeen in vitro studies comprising 807 teeth were included. Nine studies were at a high risk of bias and eight presented a moderate risk of bias. Overall, the results showed that CF was superior to PF in increasing fracture resistance (SMD= 0.93, CI95%= 0.57-1.29, P< 0.0001), with no change in the effect based on the type of teeth (P< 0.001). However, the subgroup analysis found that PF 2 mm buccal, lingual, and buccal and lingual ferrule were comparable to CF (P= 0.06). Additionally, the PF group showed significantly higher fracture resistance than the NF group (SMD= 2.02, CI95%= 1.54-2.49, P< 0.00001). CONCLUSIONS Although CF design provided the highest fracture resistance to restored ETT, PF can still be a viable option for restoring ETT in cases where CF is not feasible.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Little is known about the fracture strength, retention, and adaptation of post-and-cores fabricated with novel tooth-colored materials by computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM). PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the fracture strength, pull-out bond strength (POBS), and volume of luting agent of endodontically treated premolars restored with post-and-cores milled from different CAD-CAM materials. MATERIAL AND METHODS Post spaces were prepared in 80 human premolars in which post-and-cores fabricated with polyetheretherketone (PK; Ceramill PEEK), nanohybrid composite resin (BB; Brava Block), polymer-infiltrated ceramic (EN; VITA Enamic), and fiber-reinforced epoxy resin (GF; Fiber Cad Post & Core) CAD-CAM materials were luted (n=20). All specimens were subjected to thermal aging (3000 cycles at 5 °C and 55 °C with a 20-second dwell time). Half of the specimens were subjected to mechanical fatigue (250 000 cycles at 5 Hz) before fracture strength testing, while the other half was submitted to POBS testing and volume of luting agent measurement. Fracture strength data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA, while POBS and volume of luting agent data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis followed by the Bonferroni-Dunn multiple comparison tests. The correlation between POBS and the volume of luting agent was determined by the Spearman test (α=.05). RESULTS POBS of GF was significantly higher than that for PK (P<.001); however, failure load (P=.160) and volume of luting agent (P=.390) values did not differ. EN showed the highest percentage of catastrophic failures (20%), while PK exhibited only core deformations. POBS and cement film volume were not significantly correlated (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS Different CAD-CAM materials did not influence the fracture strength and volume of luting agent of post-and-cores. Post-and-cores made with PEEK blocks showed lower bond strength to intracanal dentin than those made with fiber-reinforced epoxy resin blocks. No significant correlation was found between bond strength and the volume of luting agent.

Abstract
Normally root canal-treated teeth are covered with crowns to prevent fracture, which becomes challenging in cases where the tooth is extensively damaged. In such instances, various restorative methods such as post-core and endocrowns have been in use. The former methodology in recent times is being discouraged owing to impending tooth weakening. Due to this reason, an uncommon type of reconstruction, endocrowns are preferred. We carried out a comparative review of restorations for endodontically treated molars.

Abstract
Aim The study was designed to evaluate the existing evidence on the failure rates of post-endodontic restorations retained with and without post in endodontically treated teeth (ETT). Settings and Design Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses- Protocol (PRISMA-P) guidelines were used to formulate the review. Materials and Methods Randomized controlled trials (RCT's) and prospective clinical studies comparing post endodontic restorations retained with and without post were included. PubMed/Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library and Scopus databases were searched to recognize relevant full-text articles in English language. The quality of the RCT's were evaluated using the Cochrane collaboration tool to assess the risk of bias and reported as having high, low or unclear risk. Random-effects model at a 95% confidence interval was used for the meta-analysis. Statistical Analysis Used Meta-analyses was performed using the Mantel -Haenszel method31 and risk ratio, with a 95% confidence interval (CI), was estimated for dichotomous data. Random effects model32 was used as the pooling method and 95% confident interval (α = .05 for RR values) in Review Manager (RevMan) [Computer program]. Version 5.4. The Cochrane Collaboration, 2020). Results Four studies comparing post retained and post free restorations in ETT with a total of 916 restorations were included in the analysis. The total risk ratio was 2.16, (95% CI:1.25 to 3.72). Conclusion ETT with post retained restorations exhibited significantly lower failure rates compared to restorations without post. Well-designed RCT's are warranted to develop a clinical protocol with respect to post-retained restorations.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of biologically oriented preparation technique on the stress concentration of endodontically treated upper central incisors restored with zirconia crown (yttria-stabilized zirconia polycrystalline ceramic) through finite element analysis (FEA). Four models of maxillary central incisors containing enamel, dentin, periodontal ligament, cortical and medullary bone were created in CAD. Each model received a polymeric core-build up with nanofilled dental resin composite. The evaluated models were SM-preparation in shoulder 90°; CM-chamfer preparation; BOPT-biologically oriented preparation technique and BOPTB-BOPT preparation 1 mm below the cement-enamel junction. All models received zirconia crowns (5Y-TZP), fiberglass post and 1 mm ferrule. The models were imported into the analysis software with parameters for mechanical structural testing using the maximum principal stress and the tensile strength as the analysis criteria. Then, load of 150 N was applied at the cingulum with 45° slope to the long axis of the tooth, with the fixed base for each model. The type of marginal preparation affected the stresses concentration in endodontically treated teeth and in the zirconia crown margin. Considering the stress magnitude only, BOPT is a viable option for anterior monolithic zirconia crowns; however, with the highest stress magnitude at the restoration margin.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of three different designs and two monolithic ceramic materials on the durability and fracture resistance of endocrowns on maxillary first premolars, in comparison to post-and-core crowns. METHODS Fifty-six maxillary premolars were endodontically treated and shortened to a level of 2 mm from the cervical line, and randomly categorized into six endocrown groups and post-and-core crown control group (n=8); E1; endocrowns with flat occlusal table (without ferrule), E2; endocrowns with 1.5 mm circumferential ferrule, E3; endocrowns with 1.5 mm buccal ferrule preparation. Two materials were used for endocrowns: zirconia (4YSZ; Z), and lithium disilicate (L). The control group was restored with zirconia posts, and lithium disilicate crowns. All restorations were bonded using Panavia V5 and its respective primers and underwent thermo-mechanical fatigue with a 10 kg dynamic load for 1,200,000 cycles and thermocycling between 5 and 55 °C. Thereafter all survived specimens were loaded to fracture. The results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and T-Test. RESULTS None of the specimens showed any signs of debonding or fracture caused by the fatigue test. The PC control group showed no statistically significant difference in comparison to groups ZE1, ZE2 and LE2 ( p > 0.05 ). However, it was significantly different from groups LE1, LE3, and ZE3 ( p ≤ 0.05 ). CONCLUSIONS Preparation designs and materials affected the fracture resistance of endocrowns. The results showed a superiority of the post-and-core crowns,zirconia/lithium disilicate endocrowns with 1.5 mm circumferential ferrule, and zirconia endocrowns with the flat occlusal table.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the fracture strength of endodontically treated human maxillary premolars (ETP) restored with posts and metal ceramic (MC) or monolithic zirconia (MZ) crowns. Sixty ETP were randomly divided into 3 groups. Teeth in control group (C) received a resin filling. ETP in the MC group were restored with prefabricated metal posts, composite cores and MC crowns while in the MZ group with glass-fiber posts, composite cores and MZ crowns. Half of the specimens were loaded at a 135° angle and half under axial loading until fracture. The fracture modes were divided in repairable and irreparable using optical microscopy. Mean fracture strength was significantly higher for MC than for MZ crowns and control group only under axial loading. The distribution of repairable and irreparable failures presented no significant differences. Crown placement significantly improved the fracture strength of ETP irrespectively of post and crown type.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The influence of the flexural modulus of prefabricated posts on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the influence of post material and post diameter on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolars. In addition, the influence of tooth substance loss was evaluated by comparing 1 with 2 residual dentinal walls. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-four extracted mandibular first premolars were endodontically treated and divided into 8 test groups (n=8) based on the number of residual walls (1 or 2), post material (glass fiber or titanium) and post diameter (International Standards Organization [ISO] 70 or ISO 90). After luting the posts, the specimens received a composite resin core and a crown preparation with a 2-mm ferrule. Cast Co-Cr crowns were cemented with glass ionomer cement. After 1 200 000 mastication cycles with a load of 49 N and simultaneous thermocycling (5 °C-55 °C), specimens were quasistatically loaded at 30 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the tooth until fracture. Fracture loads were analyzed by using 3-way ANOVA (α=.05). Fracture modes were examined with a stereomicroscope at ×25 magnification and recorded. RESULTS Fracture loads ranged from 954 ±35 N (1 residual wall-glass fiber-ISO 70) to 1286 ±202 N (1 residual wall-glass fiber-ISO 90). Titanium posts showed a statistically significant higher fracture resistance than glass fiber posts. A statistically significant increase in fracture resistance was also observed with increasing post diameter. However, no significant difference was found with respect to the number of residual walls (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS Teeth restored with titanium posts exhibited higher fracture resistance than teeth restored with glass fiber posts, especially when smaller diameter posts were used.

Abstract
Background:
Extensive restorative treatments of anterior primary teeth are challenging in pediatric dentistry.
Objective:
This study aimed to compare the fracture resistance of three post types for restoring the anterior primary teeth.
Methods:
This in-vitro study was carried out on 90 extracted maxillary anterior primary teeth with intact roots. They were randomly allocated into six groups to be restored with conventional composite resin post, X-tra fill composite resin post, Tetric N Ceram composite resin post, prefabricated glass fiber post with conventional composite build-up, prefabricated glass fiber post with X-tra fill composite build-up, and prefabricated glass fiber post with Tetric N Ceram composite build up. The samples were polished and placed in acrylic resin blocks with 1 mm of part of cervical root being out, thermocycled (×5000) and tested for fracture resistance. Intra-class correlation test, Kruskal-Wallis test and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical analyses (α=0.05).
Results:
The mean fracture resistance was significantly different among the six groups. It was the highest in prefabricated glass fiber post with conventional composite build-up (418.64 N), prefabricated glass fiber post with X-tra fill composite build-up (403.63 N) and prefabricated glass fiber post with Tetric N Ceram composite build up (361.63 N); and the lowest in Tetric N Ceram group (280.65 N). The groups were significantly different concerning the fracture strength and fracture state.
Conclusion:
Since the anterior teeth restored with prefabricated glass fiber posts were far more fracture resistant, and prefabricated glass fiber posts can be promisingly used for the restoration of anterior primary teeth.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this in vitrostudy was to evaluate the retention and resistance form of complete coverage restorations supported by two different cast post and core designs. Material and Methods Forty extracted maxillary central incisors were randomly divided into four groups of 10 specimens each (namely A, B, C and D). All specimens were endodontically treated and a uniform post space of 9mm was created. All prepared teeth had a 360o chamfer ferrule of 2mm in axial height measured 0.5mm coronally from the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and an axial wall thickness of 1.5 mm. Specimens in groups A and C received cast post and cores with the standardized core design, where the core ended at the coronal part of the ferrule, while specimens in groups B and D received cores that were encircling the ferrule. Cemented complete coverage restorations in groups A and B underwent tensile load stress, while the restorations in groups C and D underwent compressive load stress until failure. Results Teeth in group A exhibited a mean failure load of 326.14±83.67 N under tension, while teeth in group B exhibited a mean failure load of 332.79±80.38 N (p=0.858). Teeth in group C recorded a mean failure load of 1042.81±205.07 N, and in group D a mean failure load of 875.15±167.64 N (p=0.061) under compression was registered. Conclusions The standard cast post and core design with a 2 mm of ferrule height offers superior resistance, although not statistically significant (p=0.061), when compared to the core design encircling the axial wall ferrule. Both cast post and core designs offer equal retention. However, different failure modes of decementation were noted. Abstract
Objective: This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with different post systems. Methods: Fifty-six extracted intact maxillary permanent central incisors were used, treated endodontically (except for the control group), and distributed into the following seven test groups (n=8) depending on the post type: UHT (control group: root-filled teeth without endodontic post), ZRP (prefabricated zirconia post), GFP (prefabricated glass fiber post), CFP (prefabricated carbon fiber post), CPC (custom-made cast post and core), TIP (prefabricated titanium post), and MIP (prefabricated mixed post). The specimens were loaded in a universal testing machine until fracture occurrence. Failure loads were then analyzed with one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by multiple comparisons by using Tukey’s honest significant difference test (α=0.05). Results: Mean (SD) failure loads for groups ranged from 524±73.2 N for CPC to 764.1±156 N for GFP. One-way ANOVA showed significant differences in terms of fracture resistances among groups (P<0.001). Tukey’s honest significant difference test showed significant differences in fracture resistance within groups (P≤0.05), whereas no difference was observed between the UHT (control group) and CFP and CPC groups (P≥0.05). Conclusion: Endodontically treated teeth restored with zirconia post, glass fiber post, titanium post, or mixed post were more resistant to fracture loads compared with those that were not restored (control group) or restored with either carbon fiber post or cast post and core.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of ferrule design on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular first premolars after simulated crown lengthening and orthodontic forced eruption methods restored with a fiber post-and-core system. Methods Forty extracted and endodontically treated mandibular first premolars were decoronated to create lingual-to-buccal oblique residual root models, with a 2.0 mm height of the lingual dentine wall coronal to the cemento-enamel junction, and the height of buccal surface at the cemento-enamel junction. The roots were divided randomly into five equal groups. The control group had undergone incomplete ferrule preparation in the cervical root, with 0.0 mm buccal and 2.0 mm lingual ferrule lengths (Group F0). Simulated surgical crown lengthening method provided ferrule preparation of 1.0 mm (Group CL/F1) and 2.0 mm (Group CL/F2) on the buccal surface, with ferrule lengths of 3.0 mm and 4.0 mm on the lingual surface, respectively. Simulated orthodontic forced eruption method provided ferrule preparation of 1.0 mm (Group OE/F1) and 2.0 mm (Group OE/F2) on the buccal surface and ferrule lengths of 3.0 mm and 4.0 mm on the lingual surface, respectively. After restoration with a glass fiber post-and-core system and a cast Co-Cr alloy crown, each specimen was embedded in an acrylic resin block to a height on the root 2.0 mm from the apical surface of the crown margin and loaded to fracture at a 135° angle to its long axis in a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed statistically using two-way ANOVA with Tukey HSD tests and Fisher’s test, with α = 0.05. Results Mean fracture loads (kN) for groups F0, CL/F1, CL/F2, OE/F1 and OE/F2 were as follows: 1.01 (S.D. = 0.26), 0.91 (0.29), 0.73 (0.19), 0.96 (0.25) and 0.76 (0.20), respectively. Two-way ANOVA revealed significant differences for the effect of ferrule lengths (P = 0.012) but no differences for the effect of cervical treatment methods (P = 0.699). The teeth with no buccal ferrule preparation in control group F0 had the highest fracture resistance. In contrast, the mean fracture loads for group CL/F2 with a 2.0-mm buccal and 4.0-mm lingual ferrule created by simulated crown lengthening method were lowest (P = 0.036). Conclusions Increased apically complete ferrule preparation resulted in decreased fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular first premolars, regardless of whether surgical crown lengthening or orthodontic forced eruption methods been used.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated fracture resistance with regard to ferrule lengths and post reinforcement on endodontically treated mandibular premolars incorporating a prefabricated post and resin core. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred extracted mandibular premolars were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=20): intact teeth (NR); endodontically treated teeth (ETT) without post (NP); ETT restored with a prefabricated post with ferrule lengths of either 0 mm (F0), 1 mm (F1), or 2 mm (F2). Prepared teeth were restored with metal crowns. A thermal cycling test was performed for 1,000 cycles. Loading was applied at an angle of 135 degrees to the axis of the tooth using a universal testing machine with a crosshead speed of 2.54 mm/min. Fracture loads were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test using a statistical program (α=.05). RESULTS There were statistical differences in fracture loads among groups (P<.001). The fracture load of F2 (237.7 ± 83.4) was significantly higher than those of NP (155.6 ± 74.3 N), F0 (98.8 ± 43.3 N), and F1 (152.8 ± 78.5 N) (P=.011, P<.001, and P=.008, respectively). CONCLUSION Fracture resistance of ETT depends on the length of the ferrule, as shown by the significantly increased fracture resistance in the 2 mm ferrule group (F2) compared to the groups with shorter ferrule lengths (F0, F1) and without post (NP).

Abstract
Introduction: Our study's objective was to compare resistance to fracture between endocrown and conventional post and core restorations when subjected to shear force. Materials and Methods: Thirty human mandibular premolars were extracted for orthodontic reasons, endodontically treated, and restored using three different methods: endocrown, glass fiber post and composite resin core, and metal post. All the crowns were made from IPS e.max ceramic. Shear forces were applied to these restorations using a test machine until breakage. Load and displacement were recorded every 0.1 s. Results: No significant difference was observed in resistance to fracture between glass fiber post and metal post. No relationship between the displacement of prosthetic dental system and type of material used was uncovered and by comparing the type of fracture with the restoration material used. However, a greater number of favorable fractures were observed in the glass fiber group whereas most of the fractures in the endocrown and metal post groups were unfavorable. Conclusion: Endocrown displays better resistance to fracture compared to conventional post and core restorations. In addition, endocrown did not show more displacement or cause more unfavorable fractures than the conventional restorations. This restoration may represent a reliable alternative for restoring a damaged, endodontically treated tooth.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Endodontically treated teeth with Class III restorations show reduced fracture resistance. The placement of glass fiber posts may affect fracture resistance and should be further evaluated. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of fiber posts on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with Class III restorations. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty extracted human maxillary central incisors were selected and divided into 4 test groups (n=10 each) according to the restoration strategy: control group; endodontically treated teeth without endodontic posts (GHT); endodontically treated teeth with 2 Class III restorations simulating coronal destruction (GCT); endodontically treated teeth with 2 Class III restorations and a carbon fiber post (GCF); and endodontically treated teeth with 2 Class III restorations and a glass-fiber post (GGF). The fiber posts were adhesively cemented with composite resin cement, and the cavities were restored with composite resin. After 3 months of water storage, all specimens were loaded at 45 degrees in a universal testing machine until fracture and evaluated for fracture mode. The data were analyzed using 1-way ANOVA, followed by the Tukey honest significant difference multiple comparisons test (α=.05). RESULTS Mean ±SD failure loads ranged from 687.5 ±84.0 N to 943.8 ±93.1 N. One-way ANOVA revealed a statistically significant difference among the groups (P≤.05). The control group (GHT) had significantly higher resistance to fracture than the other groups (P≤.05). CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this in vitro study, placement of a fiber post did not affect the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with 2 Class III restorations.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM How the placement of fiber posts affects the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with cervical cavities is not well documented. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of fiber posts on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with cervical cavities. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty extracted human maxillary central incisors were selected and divided into 5 test groups (n=10) according to the restoration strategy: GHT, control group; endodontically treated teeth (ETT) without endodontic posts; GCV, ETT with cervical cavities simulating coronal destruction; GCF, ETT with cervical cavities and carbon fiber posts; GGF, ETT with cervical cavities and glass fiber posts; and GCP, ETT with cervical cavities and composite resin posts. After the fiber posts had been cemented with a resin cement and the foundations had been placed, all specimens were quasi statically loaded at 45 degrees in a universal testing machine until fracture. All specimens were evaluated for fracture modes. The data were then analyzed by 1-way ANOVA, followed by multiple comparisons with the Tukey HSD test (α=.05). The mode of failure was determined by visual inspection. RESULTS The mean ±SD failure loads for the groups ranged from 718.2 ±89.8 N to 943.8 ±93.1 N. In a 1-way ANOVA followed by post hoc testing, GGFs had a higher fracture strength than all other groups (P≤.05). However, GCPs had a lower fracture strength than all other groups. Statistically significant differences were observed among groups (P≤.05), except between the GHT group and the GCF and GGF groups (P=.075, P=.226). All groups except GHT showed complete favorable fracture mode within the cervical third of the roots. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this in vitro study, placement of glass fiber posts significantly improved the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary central incisors with cervical cavities.

Abstract
Background: Restoration of anterior primary teeth with severe caries lesion is a big challenge. The aim of this study was to compare the fracture resistance of three types of post, including composite resin, customized quartz fiber and prefabricated glass fiber in restoration of severely damaged primary anterior teeth. Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human primary maxillary incisors were randomly divided into three groups: Group 1: Customized quartz fiber post, Group 2: Composite post and Group 3: Prefabricated glass fiber post. Due to the effect of bonded area on the fracture resistance, the bonded surface of each sample was measured 1 mm above cementoenamel junction. An increasing force was subjected with a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min by a universal testing machine until fracture occurred, and the failure mode was assessed afterwards. Data were analyzed using One-way analysis of variance and Kruskal–Wallis tests. The level of significance was considered at P < 0.05. Results: The mean fracture resistance values of three groups were 343.28 N, 278.70 N and 284.76 N, respectively. Although customized quartz fiber post showed the greatest fracture resistance, statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between groups (P = 0.21). The mean fracture strength values of three groups were 12.82 N/mm–2, 11.93 N/mm–2 and 11.31 N/mm–2, respectively; however, the differences were not statistically significant (P = 0.72). Favorable failure mode was more frequent in all groups (P = 0.12). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that all three types of studied posts can be successfully used to restore badly destructed primary anterior teeth.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Cast metal posts and dowels are inherently dark and, when metal-free restorations are used, could impair the definitive esthetic appearance. Quartz fiber posts could represent a reliable choice for restoring abutment teeth. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term success rate of teeth restored with quartz fiber posts and fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety-nine teeth restored with 114 quartz fiber posts and FDPs were evaluated. The evaluation time ranged from 7 months to 9.25 years. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to obtain success curves. The influence of the tooth location, definitive restoration, and failure pattern upon the success function was analyzed with the log-rank test. The Cox regression test was used to evaluate possible predictors among the interactions of the observed parameters. RESULTS The success rate of the restorations was 85.86% in a mean period of 5.88 ±1.37 years, with an estimated success probability of 85% at 6.17 years. The statistical analysis identified the factors related to the arch (P=.045) and type of definitive restoration (P=.021) as significantly associated with success. Post debonding was the most frequent failure mode, followed by endodontic failure, with the latter not necessarily being related to the post itself. No root fractures were recorded. Twelve teeth out of the 14 that failed were restored again, bringing the overall survival rate of the teeth to 98%. CONCLUSIONS The rehabilitation of abutment teeth with quartz fiber posts can be considered a reliable procedure; however, adhesive techniques and luting materials require improvement.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a horizontal glass fiber post on the fracture strength of endodontically treated maxillary premolars with mesioocclusaldistal (MOD) cavities. METHODS Sixty extracted intact upper premolars were collected, treated endodontically (except for the control group), and divided into 5 test groups (n = 12) depending on the restoration type: G1 (control group, untreated teeth), G2 (MOD preparation without restoration), G3 (MOD preparation with resin composite restoration), G4 (MOD preparation with resin composite restoration and a horizontal fiber post inserted between buccal and palatal walls), and G5 (MOD preparation with a horizontal fiber post only). The specimens were stored in normal saline at 37°C for 2 months. Then specimens were quasi-statically loaded in a universal testing machine until fracture occurred. Failure loads were then analyzed with one-way analysis of variance, followed by multiple comparisons by using Tukey honestly significant difference test (α = .05). The mode of failure was determined by visual inspection. RESULTS Mean (standard deviation) failure loads for groups ranged from 411.8 N (±103.9) to 994.5 N (±147.3). One-way analysis of variance showed significant differences between fracture resistances of groups (P < .001). Tukey honestly significant difference test showed significant differences in fracture resistance within groups (P ≤ .05) except between the G1 (control group) and group G4 (P ≥ .05). All groups (except G4) had almost favorable fracture mode within the cervical third of the roots. CONCLUSIONS Under the conditions of this in vitro study, a horizontal glass fiber post in a MOD cavity increased significantly the fracture resistance of the endodontically treated upper premolars.

Abstract
An abutment for a fixed partial denture may not contain enough tooth structure, such that the abutment does not provide an adequate ‘ferrule effect’. A crown or bridge dental prosthesis that is cemented onto such an abutment/s may undergo biomechanical failure. Here, the tooth, core, and post complex, on which the crown is cemented, may fracture off from the abutment, causing the crown to separate from the abutment, while the cement that bonds the crown to the tooth, core, and post complex remains intact, such that the tooth, core, and post complex remains inside the crown when the crown separates from the abutment. This article reviews the dentistry literature on the ferrule effect, and presents alternative definitions for terms such as ferrule, the ferrule effect, and the ferrule tooth structure. The article also explains how the use of a surgical operating microscope, or high magnification binocular surgical loupes of ×6-8, or greater magnification improve the ability of a dentist to assess how much ferrule tooth structure an abutment contains, compared to the use of unaided vision.
