Abstract
Background This study investigates various surface treatment methods to assess shear bond strength between set Cention N (alkasite-based restorative material) and new alkasite based restorative material. Assessing different surface treatments provide insights in optimizing repair procedure that enables durability of the restoration, thus potentially benefitting clinical outcomes. Methods A total of 48 alkasite based restorative material blocks, measuring 4 mm in depth and 4 mm in diameter, were prepared. The samples were randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 6) according to the surface treatment done. Group I: Surface preparation by bur; Group II: Surface treatment by laser; Group III: Application of 2-step etch and rinse adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2 adhesive),Group IV: Application of single step self-etch adhesive (Scotchbond Universal adhesive); Group V: Bur preparation followed by application of 2-step etch and rinse adhesive; Group VI: Bur preparation followed by application of single step self-etch adhesive; Group VII: Laser preparation followed by application of 2-step etch and rinse adhesive; and Group VIII: Laser preparation followed by application of single step self-etch adhesive. Post-surface preparation, all the specimens were restored with newly mixed alkasite material. Repair bond strength measurements were assessed with universal testing machine. Shapiro-Wilk and Levene's tests were used to check normality and Homogeneity of variance. ANOVA with post-hoc Games-Howell test and two-way ANOVA with post-hoc Bonferroni test was performed to evaluate the influence of surface preparation on the repair bond strength. Results Using a 2-step etch and rinse adhesive resulted in a higher repair bond strength (26.05±2.12) compared to other surface treatments. In contrast, roughening of the surface with burs led to lowest repair bond strength (17.06±3.29) (P=0.02). Conclusion Application of 2-step etch and rinse adhesive to the existing alkasite based restorative material provides superior bonding with the newly added alkasite based restorative material.

Abstract
Statement of the Problem Dentin margins have a higher microleakage than enamel in composite restorations due to weaker bond durability. Clinically, most margins are located apical to cementoenamel junction on the dentin or cementum. Different surface preparation methods may have dissimilar effects on the shear bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) to composite resin, regarding the layering technique employed in restoration of these cavities. Purpose This study aimed to investigate the shear bond strength of RMGI to composite resin using different mechanical surface preparation methods. Materials and Method In this in vitro study, 72 RMGI samples were prepared in six groups (n=12): control, acid etching, air abrasion with aluminum oxide (Al2O3), bur, Er: YAG laser, and Er, Cr: YSGG laser groups. Two samples from each group were randomly examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). A bonding layer and composite resin were applied and cured. Then the samples were subjected to 5000-cycles thermocycling procedure. The shear bond strength was then evaluated using a universal testing machine. Finally, the failed surface of the samples was evaluated under a light microscope to examine the failure mode. For the statistical analysis, one-way ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test was used to compare quantitative variables and chi-squared test to investigate the relationship between the failure mode and the groups. The significant level was set at 0.05. Results The results showed significant differences between the mean of the strength variable in the groups (p< .001). The acid-etch and air abrasion groups exhibited significantly the lowest and highest values, respectively. The chi-squared test results also showed a significant relationship between the failure mode in the study groups (p= .008). Conclusion Acid etching before completing RMGI polymerization could adversely affect shear bond strength. The air abrasion and bur methods are among the best methods to increase the shear bond strength between composite resin and RMGI. Using Er, Cr: YSGG and Er: YAG lasers could increase the bond strength results.

Abstract
The success of the sandwich technique depends on the bond strength of composite to glass-ionomer cement (GIC)/resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC). Currently used adhesives employ the total-etch and the self-etch techniques. The total-etch system is technique sensitive, whereas the self-etch system is popular for its ease of use. The aim of this systematic review is to compare the effect of total-etch and self-etch adhesives (SEAs) on the bond strength of composite to GIC/(RMGIC) in the sandwich technique. A literature search was conducted using electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Ebscohost, and Scopus) limiting the year of publications from January 1, 2000, to September 30, 2018, to identify the relevant studies. All the cross-references of the selected studies were also screened. In vitro studies on extracted human teeth were selected. A total of 10 articles were included in this review. A conclusion was drawn that SEAs when used in the sandwich technique resulted in greater bond strength in comparison to total-etch adhesives. Moreover, increased bond strength was achieved when the primer was employed on unset GIC as compared to set GIC. Furthermore, the application of SEAs over uncured RMGIC (co-curing technique) resulted in better bond strengths as compared to their application over cured RMGIC.

Abstract
AIM The aim of present study was to assess and compare different conditioning methods (laser, PDT and conventional) on shear bond strength (SBS) of resin modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) bonded to composite (sandwich technique). MATERIAL AND METHODS Fifty specimens were prepared from RMGIC and were packed in a teflon mould placed on glass slab. Through each of the glass slab the cement was light cured for 20 s. Now samples were randomly allocated into five groups (n = 10) according to pre-treatment protocols. In group 1 RMGIC were conditioned with MBP using PDT, Samples in group 2 treated with Er,Cr:YSGG (ECYL), group 3 pre-treated with Nd:YAG laser (NYL), samples in group 4 surface conditioned with air abrasion (AA) and group 5 conditioned with 37 % phosphoric acid (PA). Specimens after conditioning were rinsed with distilled water. Adhesive Adper Single Bond 2 was applied on treated surface of RMGIC and cured. Teflon mold was utilized to hold the composite Filtek Z250 in an incremental technique. For SBS testing all specimens were placed under shear knife edge at 1 K N at a speed of 0.5mm2 until bond failure. Optical microscope was used to evaluate failure pattern at 10x magnification. The data of SBS in Megapascal were subjected to statistical test. Analysis of variance was followed by Post hoc test with level of significance at 5 %. RESULT The maximum SBS was found in group 5 RMGIC conditioned with 37 % PA (16.45 ± 0.32 MPa). Whereas, group 1 (MBP, PDT) demonstrated significantly lower bond integrity (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa) compared to all experimental groups. Bond integrity of RMGIC surface treated with MBP, PDT (9.82 ± 1.08 MPa), group 3 lased with NYL (11.47 ± 0.53 MPa) and samples in group 4 conditioned with AA (11.23 ± 0.47 MPa) were comparable (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION ECYL has a potential to be used for conditioning of RMGIC prior to composite restoration (sandwich technique). MBP at 100 mg/L deteriorates SBS of composite to RMGIC.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the shear bond strengths (SBS) of different nano-resin-based composites (RBCs) to resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC) after the application of different adhesion protocols. Material and Methods Three RBCs (Filtek One Bulk Fill [FOBF], Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill [TNCBF], and Filtek Z350 XT [Z350XT]) were used as layering materials over GC Fuji II LC RMGIC. Three adhesive systems — Total-etch (OptiBond Solo Plus [OB]), self-etch (CLEAR FIL SE Bond 2 [CFSE]), and a universal bond (Single Bond Universal [SBU]) — were used. In total, 160 RMGIC blocks were prepared. Ten samples (n = 10) were layered with the same material to form a reference-cohesive control group. The remaining samples were distributed among the following groups: No treatment [NT]; Total-etch [OB]; Self-etch [CFSE]; Universal bond in the “total-etch” mode [SBU-TE]; and Universal bond in the “self-etch” mode [SBU-SE]. Samples were stored, and aged by thermocycling (5000 cycles at 5 °C / 55 °C, 30 s) and then prepared for SBS testing. Fracture modes were examined by stereomicroscopy. Data were collected and analyzed statistically at a significance level of P<0.05. Results The highest mean SBS (14.30±1.08 MPa) was reported in the OB group with the TNCBF material, while the lowest was in the NT group (5.05±0.69 MPa) with FOBF. Samples in the NT group showed SBS statistically significantly lower than those of samples in all other groups (P<0.0001). Bulk-fill materials had significantly higher SBS than Z350XT in OB, CFSE, and SBU-SE (P<0.0001). SBU-TE produced SBS statistically significantly lower than those of other groups for FOBF (P<0.0001), and lower than that of OB for TNCBF (P=0.027). Conclusion OB, CFSE, and SBU-SE are reliable adhesion protocols for bonding bulk-fill RBCs to RMGIC when the “sandwich technique” is used for restorations. However, SBU-TE may not be effective in such procedures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This work aimed to compare the effect of retention and preventive caries of the pit and fissure sealant on primary teeth by using glass ionomer cements (GIC) with or without acid etching technique. METHODS In this clinical trail, 100 children aged 3-4 years old with a split-mouth design were equally divided into two groups (the left second upper and lower mandibular primary molars were present in group A, and the right second upper and lower mandibular primary molars were present in group B; each group had 200 molars). All participants were placed in pit and fissure sealant with Ketac® Molar Easymix and seated with atraumatic restorative treatmen press-finger technique in the two groups. Group A was subjected to acid etching (40 s, 35% H₃PO₄), while group B were not subjected to acid etching. GIC preservation rate, caries rate, and decayed teeth (dt) index were observed after 12 months. RESULTS After a 12-month follow-up period, the completely lost, partially losing, and losing rates of GIC in 86 children (172 second primary molars) were 83.14%, 9.88%, 6.98% in group A and 62.79%, 20.35%, and 16.86% in group B, respectively. The differences between the two groups were insignificant (P<0.05). The caries rates of groups A and B were 8.14% and 16.86%, and their dt indices were 0.08±0.31 and 1.17±0.46, respectively, thereby indicating significant difference between the two groups (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Using acid etching technology, the retention rate of the pit and fissure sealant increased, while its losing rate decreased. The retention effect of the GIC was improved, and the dental caries prevention effect was enhanced. Sealant processing was a self-curing procedure that sets without the external energy. Hence, this procedure is suitable for the preventive caries of primary teeth in children.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction Glass ionomer cements are often used as a base or cavity lining prior to restorative material. Objective To evaluate the bond strength of a composite resin to different glass ionomer cements, when using a two-step conventional and self-etching adhesive systems. Material and method Three glass ionomer cements (Ketac Molar Easymix, Vitremer and Vitrebond), the composite resin Filtek Z350 XT and the adhesive systems Adper Single Bond 2, Clearfil SE Bond and Adper Easy One were used. As negative control, resin was bonded to cement without using an adhesive system. Holes (4 mm diameter, 2 mm deep) prepared in acrilic bloks were filled with the glass ionomer cements (n=12/group). On the surface, an area of 1mm in diameter was delimited, the adhesive system was applied, and a specimen of composite resin with 1 mm height was made. After 24 hours storage (37 °C and 100% humidity), the microshear test was performed. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey test for comparison between groups (α=0.05). Result The adhesive systems significantly improved the bond strenght of composite resin to glass ionomer cements (p≤0.001). There was no significant difference in bond strength when self-etching adhesive systems were compared with the simplified etch-and-rinse adhesive, except for Vitrebond where Clearfil SE Bond determined higher bond strength when compared to Adper Single Bond 2 (p=0.003). Conclusion Self-etching adhesive systems are a good option for establishing the bond between the composite resin and the glass ionomer cement.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The adhesion of resin-modified glass-ionomer (RMGI) to composite resin has a very important role in the durability of sandwich restorations. Hydroxyapatite is an excellent candidate as a filler material for improving the mechanical properties of glass ionomer cement. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to assess the effect of adding micro- and nano-hydroxyapatite (HA) powder to RMGI on the shear bond strength (SBS) of nanofilled and silorane-based composite resins bonded to RMGI containing micro- and nano-HA. MATERIALS AND METHOD Sixty cylindrical acrylic blocks containing a hole of 5.5×2.5 mm (diameter × height) were prepared and randomly divided into 6 groups as Group 1 with RMGI (Fuji II LC) plus Adper Single Bond/Z350 composite resin (5.5×3.5 mm diameter × height); Group 2 with RMGI containing 25 wt% of micro-HA plus Adper Single Bond/Z350 composite resin; Group3 with RMGI containing 25 wt% of nano-HA plus Adper Single Bond/Z350 composite resin; Group 4 with RMGI plus P90 System Adhesive/P90 Filtek composite resin (5.5×3.5 mm diameter × height); Group 5 with RMGI containing 25 wt% of micro-HA plus P90 System Adhesive/P90Filtek composite resin; and Group 6 with RMGI containing 25 wt% of nano-HA plus P90 System Adhesive/P90 Filtek composite resin. The specimens were stored in water (37° C, 1 week) and subjected to 1000 thermal cycles (5°C/55°C). SBS test was performed by using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey test (p< 0.05). RESULTS There were significant differences between groups 1 and 4 (RMGI groups, p= 0.025), and groups 3 and 6 (RMGI+ nano-HA groups, p= 0.012). However, among Z350 and P90 specimens, no statistically significant difference was detected in the SBS values (p= 0.19, p= 0.083, respectively). CONCLUSION RMGI containing HA can improve the bond strength to methacrylate-based in comparison to silorane-based composite resins. Meanwhile, RMGI without HA has the best bond strength to silorane-based composite resins.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the bonding of composite to glass ionomer cement (GIC) using two different bonding systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS The occlusal surface of 30 teeth was flattened and they were divided into three groups. In Group A, composite (Filtek" Z350 XT, 3M ESPE, USA) was bonded to GIC (Fuji II, GC Corporation, Japan) after initial setting of the GIC being employed as a total-etch adhesive(AdperSinglebond 2, 3M ESPE, USA). In Group B and C, self-etch primer(Adper" Easy One, 3M ESPE, USA) was employed to bond composite to GIC before and after initial setting of GIC respectively. Shear bond strength and nature of fracture of specimens was determined. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. RESULTS Group B showed higher bond strength than Group A & Group C (p<0.01). Group C showed the least bond strength. CONCLUSION Bond strength of composite to GIC was significantly higher for self-etch primer group employed on unset GIC.
