Acceptability of dental students and professionals concerning child behaviour management techniques: Systematic review

INTRODUCTION

During child dental treatment, different behavior management techniques (BMTs) are applied and it is important to understand the possible discomfort in the operator.

OBJECTIVE

The present systematic review aimed to evaluate the acceptability of dental students and professionals concerning BMTs applied with paediatric dentistry patients.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A systematic search was conducted, following the PEOS strategy: Population (P) - dental students/professionals (S); Exposure (E) - BMTs preconized by the American Academy of Paediatric Dentistry, Outcome (O) - proportion of BMT acceptance; and Study design (S) - observational studies based on data from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, BVS (Lilacs/BBO), Cochrane, and Open Grey databases up to September 2021. The eligible studies were submitted to data extraction and to the evaluation of methodological quality, using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool. The certainty of evidence was evaluated by GRADE.

RESULTS

The search retrieved 710 articles; a total of 21 fulfilled the eligibility criteria and were used for qualitative analysis. Among the undergraduate students and dentists, the most accepted techniques were tell-show-do and positive reinforcement, while paediatric dentists preferred the tell-show-do technique and dental professionals with graduate degrees preferred sedation using nitrous oxide and positive reinforcement. The least accepted technique was protective stabilization. Seven students presented a low risk for bias, while 14 presented a high risk. The certainty of evidence was classified as very low.

CONCLUSION

Although the basis of available certainty of evidence is scarce and with a considerable risk for bias, it is still possible to conclude that the more accepted techniques were based on communication.

Avaliação dos graus de ansiedade em acadêmicos de uma faculdade privada

Objetivo: este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o grau de ansiedade dos acadêmicos de uma instituição de ensino superior privada.Métodos: foi realizada uma pesquisa de corte transversal com abordagem descritiva, quantitativa e observacional em 366 alunos aleatoriamente escolhidos que estavam matriculados no primeiro semestre do ano de 2019. A coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de um questionário com questões sociodemográficas-comportamentais e questões do Inventário de Ansiedade Beck. Os graus de ansiedade (mínimo ou ausente, leve, moderado e grave) foram determinados pelo somatório dos escores do inventário de Beck.Resultados: do total da amostra, 62,3% apresentou algum grau de ansiedade, sendo os cursos da área de saúde os que mais apresentaram estudantes com graus de ansiedade. O sexo e a idade foram as variáveis que apresentaram correlação significativa com os graus de ansiedade.Conclusão: este estudo alerta sobre a ocorrência de transtornos de ansiedade em estudantes universitários, o que implica em uma necessidade crescente de estratégias, dentro do ambiente acadêmico, para reverter e evitar o desencadeamento de patologias de saúde mental nos universitários.

[User evaluation on dental care in the Unified Health System: an approach from the standpoint of humanization]

The scope of this study was to assess user evaluation about dental care in the Unified Health System and analyze the associations between this evaluation, sociodemographic characteristics, and aspects related to humanization of the services. It involved a cross-sectional survey with a quantitative approach, in which 461 users responded to individual interviews. The outcome variable was obtained by means of the question: "How do you consider the care given by the dentist and by the team in this health unit?" Responses were grouped into "positive evaluation" and "negative evaluation." The independent variables integrated two groups: sociodemographic, and related to the humanization of care. The positive evaluation (90.4%) prevailed over the negative. Using Poisson regression, it was found that the negative evaluation was statistically associated with not having felt confidence in the dentist and staff, and not being able to talk to these professionals after the end of treatment. The results showed the preponderantly positive user evaluation of the service, and suggest that the evaluation may be more related to the humanization in services than to sociodemographic characteristics of the population.
