Introdução: o tabagismo é um grave problema de saúde pública em âmbito mundial que afeta a todas as faixas etárias, causando altas taxas de morbimortalidade evitáveis.Objetivo: descrever o que vem sendo publicado sobre o tabagismo na população idosa nos últimos cinco anos na esfera internacional.Metodologia: trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, onde foram realizadas buscas de artigos nas seguintes bases de dados: PUBMED/MEDLINE, BVS/LILACS, SCOPUS e SCIELO, utilizando os seguintes Descritores em Ciências da Saúde em inglês: “Tobacco Use Cessation” OR “Tobacco Use Disorder” AND “Health of the Elderly” OR “Aged” OR “Aged, 80 and over”. O recorte temporal foi de 2016 a 2020.Resultados: dos 1.642 trabalhos recuperados das bases, houve o afunilamento para um número total de 18 artigos, com a seguinte categorização: mortalidade e outros desfechos clínicos negativos (5); o tabagismo, as síndromes geriátricas e outras patologias (4); políticas públicas para o controle do tabaco (3); qualidade de vida e tabagismo (3); e fatores preditores para cessação tabágica (3).Conclusões: apenas um estudo selecionado foi realizado no Brasil, ressaltando a necessidade de mais estudos brasileiros envolvendo o tabagismo na população idosa objetivando uma melhor compreensão dos aspectos envolvidos e futuras capacitações e otimização de políticas públicas específicas.

Prevalence and simultaneity of cardiovascular risk factors in elderly participants of a population-based study in southern Brazil

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the prevalence of simultaneity of cardiovascular risk factors and their association with socio-demographic characteristics in older adults in Southern Brazil.

METHODS

Cross-sectional study with 1.553 elderly participants of the EpiFloripa study in Florianópolis-SC. The risk factors evaluated were: Inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption, insufficient leisure-time physical activity, alcohol consumption and smoking. The construction of the outcome was performed by combining all of the factors mentioned and then categorized. Bivariate and multivariate analyzes were performed using the Poisson regression.

RESULTS

It was found that 57.6% of the elderly coexist with the simultaneity of cardiovascular risk factors. The combination of inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption and insufficient leisure-time physical activity was the most prevalent. The highest prevalence observed in women and men was the insufficient leisure-time physical activity and inadequate fruit and vegetable consumption of 46.4 and 28.1%, respectively. The observed prevalence of the four factors was higher among men (2.5%), whereas for women (0.3%). Men were 11.0% more likely to accumulate risk factors compared to women. And each additional year of schooling represents 4.0% less probability of accumulating cardiovascular risk factors.

CONCLUSIONS

The differences between the simultaneity of risk factors and sociodemographic aspects should be considered in the approach for older adults, both at the individual level and in the construction of public policies.

Clusters of risk behaviors for noncommunicable diseases in the Brazilian adult population

OBJECTIVES

To identify clusters of risk behaviors among Brazilian adults, by sex, and to associate clusters with sociodemographic factors and self-perception of health.

METHODS

We assessed 46,785 adults from the Brazilian National Health Survey. The risk behaviors were low consumption of fruits and vegetables-LFV (< 5 times/week), physical inactivity-PI (< 150 min/week), smoking (yes/no) and excessive consumption of alcohol-EA (5 doses for male, 4 doses for female). We used Venn diagram, cluster analysis and multinomial regression models.

RESULTS

We found 9 clusters. The cluster of four risk behaviors was more common in males (3.2% vs. 0.83%). Despite a greater potential for aggregation of behaviors in females (O/E = 2.48) than in males (O/E = 1.62), the women were less likely to have all risk behaviors jointly (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.19; 0.31), and this was found for the other clusters. In general, Brazilian black/brown, younger, with low education level and who had a self-perception of bad health, were more likely to engage in clusters of risk behaviors.

CONCLUSIONS

The prevalence of Brazilian adults engaging in clusters of risk behaviors is high, mainly among males, those who reported a bad health and with low socioeconomic status.

Aging and quality of life of elderly people in rural areas

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the quality of life and health of elderly in rural areas of Minas Gerais State’s center-west. Method: Cross-sectional study, in four municipalities of Minas Gerais State, by interviewing elderly people. Associations between socio-demographic and quality of life variables were tested, separated into “satisfactory”/“unsatisfactory” with values from the median of positive answers. It was used the chi-square test, Fisher’s test and regression. Results: 182 elderly answered the questions and showed a relation with the “satisfactory” quality of life - bivariate (p < 0.05): age by 69 years (61.6%), married (61.7%), living by 54 years in rural areas (68%), with no financial support (59.5%), living with someone else (61%), non-smoker (60%), presenting good health (76.7%), satisfied with life (69.6%); regression: not having financial support, living with someone else and not smoking. Conclusion: Elderly people in rural areas present good quality of life/health in the cognitive aspect, access to services, goods, habits, but awareness must be constant due to their weakness.

Healthy aging profile in octogenarians in Brazil

OBJECTIVE

to identify the healthy aging profile in octogenarians in Brazil.

METHOD

this population-based epidemiological study was conducted using household interviews of 335 octogenarians in a Brazilian municipality. The decision-tree model was used to assess the healthy aging profile in relation to the socioeconomic characteristics evaluated at baseline. All of the tests used a p-value < 0.05.

RESULTS

the majority of the 335 participating older adults were women (62.1%), were aged between 80 and 84 years (50.4%), were widowed (53.4%), were illiterate (59.1%), had a monthly income of less than one minimum wage (59.1%), were retired (85.7%), lived with their spouse (63.8%), did not have a caregiver (60.3%), had two or more children (82.7%), and had two or more grandchildren (78.8%). The results indicate three age groups with a healthier aging profile: older adults aged 80 to 84 years (55.6%), older adults aged 85 years and older who are married (64.9%), and older adults aged 85 and older who do not have a partner or a caregiver (54.2%).

CONCLUSION

the healthy aging profile of octogenarians can be explained by age group, marital status, and the presence of a caregiver.

Quality of life and the health status of elderly persons: a population-based study in the central sertão of Ceará

Introduction : Healthy aging and quality of life has become a major desire of contemporary society. Understanding the profile of this population will allow the creation of more appropriate policies and actions for the promotion of health and quality of life. Objective : To map aspects related to health and quality of life as perceived by elderly residents of the city of Canindé, in the central sertão region of the state of Ceará. Method : A quantitative, cross-sectional, household-based study was performed. From a population of 5,214 elderly persons, proportional stratified sampling resulted in a sample of 372 individuals. A characterization questionnaire addressing sociodemographic characteristics and health status and the abbreviated version of WHOQOL were used. SPSS version 16.0 was used for descriptive and inferential statistics, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results : Most elderly individuals were female, married, brown skinned, aged 60 to 69 years old, with an incomplete primary education and an income of up to one minimum wage. Most of the elderly persons had attended 1-3 consultations/admissions in the last 12 months, and reported a high prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, osteoporosis, anxiety and cardiovascular diseases, despite describing their health and quality of life as "good". In terms of quality of life, the psychological domain had the highest, and the environmental domain had the lowest mean score. Conclusions : The prevalent diseases/comorbidities belonged to the chronic non-communicable diseases group. The environmental domain negatively influenced overall quality of life, indicating the importance of environments that provide health promotion and quality of life for elderly people from rural regions.

Relações hipotéticas entre os determinantes sociais da saúde que influenciam na obesidade em idosos

Os elevados índices de prevalência de obesidade em idosos suscitam a necessidade de compreender os fatores envolvidos nesta desordem nutricional, por meio de métodos quantitativos que permitam uma análise relacional desses determinantes. O objetivo deste estudo foi propor um modelo hipotético que estabeleça as relações entre os determinantes sociais da saúde associados à obesidade em idosos. Para a construção do modelo hipotético, foram delineadas as variáveis latentes e observadas de acordo com a análise de 45 artigos nacionais e internacionais e em concordância com o referencial da Modelagem de Equações Estruturais. Foi construído um diagrama representativo para evidenciar as correlações entre os 11 determinantes sociais da saúde relacionados à obesidade no idoso: atividade física, tabagismo, etilismo, consumo alimentar, contato social, ocupação, renda, escolaridade, idade, sexo e estado civil. Espera-se que as relações hipotéticas estabelecidas no estudo contribuam para a compreensão das relações dos fatores que estão envolvidos nesse contexto visando ao desenvolvimento de estratégias para a saúde da pessoa idosa.

Fatores sociodemográficos e econômicos associados ao tabagismo na população idosa

Objetivos Identificar a condição tabágica dos idosos e verificar os fatores sociodemográficos e econômicos associados ao hábito de fumar nessa população. Métodos Trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, transversal, observacional e analítico, com 980 idosos da zona urbana do município de Uberaba-MG. Utilizaram-se os instrumentos Miniexame do Estado Mental (MEEM) e Questionário Brasileiro de Avaliação Funcional e Multidimensional (BOMFAQ). Os idosos foram classificados como tabagistas, ex-tabagistas e não tabagistas de acordo com as Diretrizes para Cessação do Tabagismo. As análises procederam por meio do software SPSS-17. A condição tabágica dos idosos foi descrita por meio de frequências simples e absolutas. Aplicou-se o teste Cramer’s V (p ≤ 0,05) na análise bivariada e em seguida a Regressão Logística Multinomial Múltipla (p ≤ 0,05) ajustados para sexo e faixa etária de acordo com a classificação tabágica. Resultados Encontraram-se 122 (12,4%) idosos tabagistas, 320 (32,7%) ex-tabagistas e 538 (54,9%) não tabagistas. Os idosos tabagistas apresentaram-se com 3,57, 2,36 e 1,82 mais riscos de chances de ser do sexo masculino (p < 0,001), estar na faixa etária de 60 a 69 anos (p = 0,004) e não ter companheiro(a) (p = 0,008), respectivamente. Para os idosos ex-tabagistas, também foi encontrada maior chance de risco (5,34) para o sexo masculino (p < 0,001). Conclusão Os resultados evidenciam que o sexo, a faixa etária e a situação conjugal são fatores associados ao tabagismo na população idosa.

Use of alcohol in the elderly: transcultural validation of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test – Geriatric Version (MAST-G)

Objective: To evaluate the internal consistency of the version of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test – Geriatric Version (MAST-G) instrument, translated and adapted for Brazil. Method: This was a descriptive, cross-sectional study. Data were collected through a demographic questionnaire, the ICD-10 and the MAST-G, following the steps of translation and cultural adaptation. One hundred eleven elderly in the city of São Carlos, SP, Brazil were interviewed. Results: The mean age of those interviewed was 70 years, with 45% men and 55% women, with the mean education of three years; 92% resided with family; 48% of the subjects consumed alcoholic beverages. The MAST-G presented a good level of reliability, with Cronbach’s α = 0.7873, and good levels of sensitivity and specificity with a cutoff score of five positive responses. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of the MAST-G presented internal consistency values similar to the original English version,showing it to be adequate for use in the national context.





Perfil sociodemográfico e de hábitos de vida da população idosa de um município da região norte do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil

OBJETIVO: Este estudo teve como objetivo caracterizar o perfil sociodemográfico e de hábitos de vida da população idosa de um município da região norte do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. METODOLOGIA: Pesquisa quantitativa, descritiva e transversal. As variáveis analisadas foram: sociodemográficas (idade, sexo, estado civil, escolaridade e renda) e hábitos de vida (etilismo, tabagismo e atividade física). RESULTADOS: Participaram da pesquisa 424 idosos, sendo 68,4% do sexo feminino; a idade variou de 60 a 99 anos, com um número maior de idosos acima de 80 anos (15,6%) do que dos 75 aos 80 anos (14,6%); situação conjugal predominante foi "casado" (53,8%); a maioria com menos de cinco anos de escolaridade (60,1%). A renda familiar ficou entre um e dois salários mínimos, com dois dependentes. As principais despesas foram com alimentação, saúde/medicamentos, sendo que 75,7% fizeram uso de medicamentos diários e 71,3% consumiram de um a três medicamentos ao dia. A maioria não consumia bebidas alcoólicas (85,6%), não tinha o hábito de fumar (85,6%), 48,3% dos idosos não praticavam atividade física regular. CONCLUSÃO: Com base nos resultados deste estudo, constatou-se que o perfil sociodemográfico predominante é de idosos de baixa renda e escolaridade; e com relação aos hábitos de vida, a maioria não ingere bebida alcoólica, não fuma, não pratica atividade física e suas principais despesas são com alimentação e saúde/medicamentos. Neste contexto, entende-se que a gestão pública de saúde tem um grande desafio com o envelhecimento, dentre eles, capacitar técnicos e profissionais, desenvolver políticas inclusivas, valorizando mais a pessoa do idoso, assim como seus cuidadores/família, oferecendo suporte adequado.
