Acidente com material perfurocortante entre profissionais de enfermagem de um hospital universitário

Work incidents with biological material in the nursing team of a hospital in Mid-Western Brazil

Abstract Objectives: To investigate and describe the occurrence and characteristics of Work Incidents (WI) with Potentially Contaminated Biological Material (PCBM), the frequency and variables related to this occurrence among nursing categories. Methods: A descriptive and cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was performed at a referral hospital in the State of Mato Grosso, Mid-Western Brazil. Results: Women represented 90.5% of all participants and the mean age was 42.59 years. A total of 46.6% of professionals reported having undergone exposure to PCBM, 60.9% stated not having made a report, and 42.6% reported having participated in training courses on this subject. Comparing the occurrence of WI between nursing assistants and nurses, nursing assistants were more affected (p = 0.022). Conclusions: Among nursing professionals, the number of WI is high, recurrent and underreported. Continuing education on this theme is required to ensure the quality of care and promote workers' health.

Acidente com material biológico: uma abordagem a partir da análise das atividades de trabalho

Trata-se de estudo qualitativo feito em hospital universitário, cujo objetivo foi analisar o trabalho de auxiliares e técnicos de enfermagem, categoria mais numerosa entre os profissionais de saúde e mais sujeita à incidência de acidentes de trabalho. Este hospital conta com um pouco mais de 2.000 profissionais de enfermagem. Foram utilizados dois métodos de análise. 1) A Análise Coletiva do Trabalho (ACT), que consiste em reuniões com pequenos grupos de trabalhadores explicando seu trabalho. Foram realizadas quatro reuniões, com 34 participantes, quase todos do sexo feminino; 2) O Modelo de Análise e Prevenção de Acidentes (MAPA), que foi utilizado para compreender um acidente ocorrido em uma das clínicas do hospital, com um acidentado que aceitou participar do estudo. Os resultados revelaram que as rotinas de trabalho caracterizam-se por rol de tarefas de cuidados aos pacientes, marcado por grande variabilidade no cotidiano de suas atividades constantemente interrompidas com sobreposição de tarefas decorrentes de demandas urgentes, além de problemas em aspectos organizacionais na situação que originou o acidente, bem como, a fragilidade do sistema de gestão de segurança do trabalho no hospital.

COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF NEEDLE AND CATHETER OVER NEEDLE WITH ACTIVE PROTECTION DEVICES IN THE HOSPITAL SETTING

ABSTRACTThe aim of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of needle and catheter over needle with active protection safety devices in the hospital context. A cross-sectional and retrospective study was undertaken at a public university hospital in Southern Brazil. The population was composed of consumption and material cost worksheets and 53 records of workers and students who suffered perforating accidents that occurred before and after the implementation of the safety devices, in the periods named A: June/2010 till June/2011 and B: June/2012 till June/2013. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. There was a 30% increase in accidents between period A and period B. The cost went from 44.769,93 to 139.558,08 American dollars. Educational strategies are recommended to enhance the cost-effectiveness of safety devices in healthcare organizations.

[Time for cleaning and room preparation: connection between surgery size and professional perspectives]

The objective was to verify the association between time needed for room cleaning (TLPS) and the surgery size, and related advantages and difficulties faced by the circulator of the room asszgned to this task. A mixed method, with a transverse quantitative, retrospective approach, using a sample of 3095 surgeries performed,from January to June 2011, and a qualitative approach using a Thematic Content Analysis of statements from 11 circulators, was used. The average TLPS was smaller in size 1 surgeries, increasing in sizes 2, 3 and 4, with a significant difference. Advantages reported included organization and size of staff and difficulties reported related to sharp, bladed materials mixed with surgical instruments and a reduced number of cleaning professionals. The larger the size, the higher the TLPS. Surgical teams operating in the Surgical Center interfere directly in the process, facilitating or hindering the achievement of institutional goals related to quality and productivity.
