Protocols for Psychological Assessment of Recidivism and Dangerousness: a systematic review of the Brazilian scientific production

Abstract The psychological assessment of recidivism and dangerousness aims to provide subsidies to legal operators on the possibility of an individual to repeat criminal offenses. In the present study, a systematic review of Portuguese-language articles was carried out in the “SciELO”, “Lilacs” and “Periódicos Capes” databases to identify available instruments to carry out this assessment in Brazilian populations and their predictive capacity. It was found that the Brazilian scientific production is too scarce, only nine empirical studies have been published on the subject and only one instrument with this objective is suitable for use in forensic practice. Six other instruments have been studied, but none are suitable for practical implementation. These results point to the need for scientific production on psychological assessment of recidivism and dangerousness to provide psychologists with the necessary instruments for their performance in Legal Psychology.

Depression, anxiety, and drug usage history indicators among institutionalized juvenile offenders of Brasilia

INTRODUCTION

One of the most serious socio-educational measures for children and adolescents in conflict with the law in Brazil is their internment. This measure may represent an additional source of stress to this population and present significant impacts in the mental health context. This study aims to describe anxiety levels, depression, and addictive consumption, as well as to estimate the causalities and interactions of these variables.

METHODS

Herein, we report a study in which 175 male juveniles from youth detention institutions of the Federal District voluntarily completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and a short self-rating questionnaire asking whether and how often they had experienced cannabis, alcohol, and other "hard" psychotropic drugs (e.g., crack, cocaine, amphetamine) 1 year prior to institutionalization.

RESULTS

Of the total participants, 28.00% showed moderate to severe depression scores and 34.28% showed moderate to severe anxiety scores. In addition, the vast majority of participants also reported some antecedent drug abuse, including cannabis, alcohol, and other "hard drugs." The BDI scores moderately correlated with BAI, but none of these parameters considerably correlated with the antecedent drug abuse.

CONCLUSIONS

The data indicate potentially concerning levels of emotional distress in these institutionalized juveniles which seem to be independent of addictive behaviors. These data deserve attention and further investigation. Thus, a need for preventative mental health for the general population and socio-educational intervention aimed at interned youth which can decrease levels of emotional stress is emphasized.

A cognição social dos psicopatas: achados científicos recentes

Resumo O psicopata apresenta traços na personalidade relacionados à ausência de remorso e uma maior dominância social, expressos muitas vezes como manipulação de outros indivíduos. Em estudos atuais sugere-se que psicopatas podem apresentar deficiências no processamento de estímulos emocionais em uma situação de interação social. Este estudo tem por objetivo realizar uma revisão teórica, não sistemática, discutindo pesquisas recentes sobre o tema. A partir da leitura, conclui-se que novas considerações revelam-se pertinentes, pois nem sempre o tipo de disfunção da cognição social dos psicopatas é explícito na literatura. Sugere-se que outros métodos para avaliar a capacidade dos psicopatas em identificar as emoções possam ser investigadas, além de identificar a medida das estratégias interpessoais. Em termos gerais, apresenta-se uma proposta de reflexão para um transtorno cuja compreensão etiológica deve ser biopsicossocial, contribuindo para assinalar novas direções nas pesquisas voltadas para a cognição social dos psicopatas.

Análise Psicométrica Preliminar de um Instrumento de Autorrelato para Avaliar Traços de Psicopatia

<p>Pesquisadores brasileiros dispunham, até o momento, de limitados recursos metodológicos para avaliar traços de psicopatia em indivíduos da população geral. O objetivo do presente estudo foi investigar as propriedades psicométricas de um novo instrumento de autorrelato de traços de psicopatia para ser usado em pesquisas com amostras da população geral brasileira. Os participantes do presente estudo foram 1238 indivíduos da população geral (idades de 18 a 76 anos; <italic>M</italic>= 28,36; <italic>DP</italic>= 10,50; 71,8% mulheres) que responderam a um questionário <italic>on-line</italic>. Métodos de Teoria de Resposta ao Item e análise fatorial ordinal ajudaram a reter um conjunto de 60 itens informativos das dimensões Egocentrismo Maquiavélico, Descontrole e Audácia<italic>.</italic>Escores latentes nesses domínios apresentaram, também, padrões de correlação teoricamente esperados com variáveis relevantes, incluindo uma avaliação independente de psicopatia - a escala <italic>Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy</italic>. Embora novos estudos psicométricos sejam necessários, as análises preliminares do instrumento revelaram adequadas propriedades psicométricas.</p>
