Divergent egg physiologies in two closely related grasshopper species: Taeniopoda eques versus Romalea microptera (Orthoptera: Romaleidae)

Effects of Soil Temperature and Moisture on the Development and Survival of Grasshopper Eggs in Inner Mongolian Grasslands

Grasshopper eggs overwinter in soil for almost half a year. Changes in soil temperature and moisture have a substantial effect on grasshopper eggs, especially temperature and moisture extremes. However, the combinatorial effect of temperature and moisture on the development and survival of grasshopper eggs has not been well studied. Here, we examined the effects of different soil moistures (2, 5, 8, 11, 14% water content) at 26°C and combinations of extreme soil moisture and soil temperature on the egg development and survival of three dominant species of grasshopper (Dasyhippus barbipes, Oedaleus asiaticus, and Chorthippus fallax) in Inner Mongolian grasslands. Our data indicated that the egg water content of the three grasshopper species was positively correlated with soil moisture but negatively correlated with hatching time. The relationship between hatching rate and soil moisture was unimodal. Averaged across 2 and 11% soil moisture, a soil temperature of 35oCsignificantly advanced the egg hatching time of D. barbipes, O. asiaticus, and C. fallax by 5.63, 4.75, and 2.63 days and reduced the egg hatching rate of D. barbipes by 18%. Averaged across 26 and 35°C, 2% soil moisture significantly delayed the egg hatching time of D. barbipes, O. asiaticus, and C. fallax by 0.69, 11.01, and 0.31 days, respectively, and decreased the egg hatching rate of D. barbipes by 10%. The hatching time was prolonged as drought exposure duration increased, and the egg hatching rate was negatively correlated with drought exposure duration, except for O. asiaticus. Overall, the combination of high soil temperature and low soil moisture had a significantly negative effect on egg development, survival, and egg hatching. Generally, the response of grasshopper eggs to soil temperature and moisture provides important information on the population dynamics of grasshoppers and their ability to respond to future climate change.

Ontogenetic shift from aposematism and gregariousness to crypsis in a Romaleid grasshopper

Traits of chemically-defended animals can change as an individual grows and matures, and both theoretical and empirical evidence favour a direction of change from crypsis to aposematism. This study examines the suite of traits involved in an unusual opposite shift from aposematism to crypsis in a neotropical toxic-plant-feeding Romaleid grasshopper, Chromacris psittacus (Gerstaecker, 1873). Field surveys, behavioural observations and a rearing experiment compare host plant choice, aggregation, locomotion and thermoregulation between life history stages. Results showed that both nymphs and adults fed exclusively on a narrow range of Solanaceae plants, suggesting that the shift in defensive syndrome is not due to a change in chemical defense. Instead, nymphal aposematism appears linked to aggregation in response to plant-based selection pressures. Slow nymphal development suggests a cost to feeding on toxic plant compounds, and grouping could mitigate this cost. Grouping also increases conspicuousness, and hence can favour warning colourating in chemically-defended insects. The role of diet breadth in aposematism is poorly understood, and these results suggest how constraints imposed by feeding on toxic plants can generate bottom-up selection pressures shaping the adaptive suites of traits of chemically-defended animals.

Surviving a flood: effects of inundation period, temperature and embryonic development stage in locust eggs

The Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera (Walker), is an important agricultural pest and oviposits into compacted soil across vast semi-arid and arid regions prone to irregular heavy summer rainfall. This study aimed to quantify the effects of flooding (control, 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days) at different temperatures (15, 20 and 25°C) and embryonic development stages (25 and 75%) on egg viability, hatchling nymph body mass and survival to second-instar. Egg viability after flooding was dependent on temperature and flood duration. Eggs inundated at 15°C showed ≥53.5% survival regardless of flood duration and development stage compared with ≤29.6% for eggs at 25°C for ≥21 days early in development and ≥14 days late in development. Hatchling nymphs did not differ in body mass relative to temperature or flood duration, but weighed more from eggs inundated early in development rather than late. Survival to second-instar was ≤55.1% at 15 and 20°C when eggs were flooded for ≥28 days late in development, ≤35.6% at 25°C when flooded for ≥28 days early in development, and zero when flooded for ≥21 days late in development. These results suggest that prolonged flooding in summer and early autumn may cause very high egg mortality and first-instar nymph mortality of any survivors, but is likely to only ever affect a small proportion of the metapopulation. More common flash flooding for ≤14 days is unlikely to cause high mortality and have any direct effect on distribution and abundance.
