Inactivation of Avian Influenza Virus in Nonpelleted Chicken Feed

Infectious diseases in free-range compared to conventional poultry production

Commercial chicken production for the supply of meat and eggs has expanded in the scale and variety of production systems in use to facilitate the supply of a range of cost-effective products in response to consumer demand. In the egg sector, traditional cage systems were required to be replaced in the EU by 2012, and most of this production capacity has been replaced by colony cage systems, which provide more space, perching, and environmental enrichment. In some countries there is significant production of "cage-free" or "barn" eggs in which the birds remain housed, but have access to litter. In the UK most egg production is now free-range. Meat poultry is produced in "barn" systems with various enrichments and some free-range. The rise in free-range production has seen the return of some diseases. Biosecurity is a critical tool for disease control in all production systems, particularly when disease challenge is high or farms are in a high poultry density area. An infectious dose of a pathogen is important in determining outcomes in terms of health and productivity, so biosecurity, hygiene, and good management are important across many diseases. Infections which are notifiable, of zoonotic importance and those which are sporadic or endemic in commercial poultry production are reviewed. General principles of preventative medicine applicable to the control of infectious diseases in different poultry production systems are proposed in areas such as biosecurity, system design and maintenance, range, and vaccination, though good management is always important.

Evaluation of Feedstuffs as a Potential Carrier of Avian Influenza Virus between Feed Mills and Poultry Farms

The present study was conducted to assess the potential vector role of feedstuffs for the area spreading of avian influenza virus (AIV). Firstly, feed samples were collected from commercial poultry facilities that experienced highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N2) in 2014−2015 for AIV testing by a real-time RT−PCR specific for the viral matrix gene. Secondly, feed materials obtained from an AIV-negative farm were spiked with various concentrations of a low pathogenic AIV H5N2. Virus-spiked cell culture media were prepared in the same manner and used for comparison. The spiked feed and media samples were tested by a multiplex real-time RT−PCR ran in a quantitative manner, either immediately or after incubation at −20, 4, 22, and 37 °C for 24, 48, and 72 h. Some of the feedstuffs collected from the poultry facilities or feed mills were positive for AIV RNA but negative by the virus isolation (VI) test, while all the formaldehyde-treated feedstuffs were PCR-negative. In the spiked feeds, the AIV titer was 1−3 logs lower than that in the corresponding media, even when tested immediately after spiking, suggesting that feed might have a negative impact on the virus or PCR detection. The half-life of AIV RNA was shorter at a higher temperature. A significant decay in the viral RNA over time was noted at 37 °C (p < 0.05), suggesting that feedstuffs should be maintained in the cold chain when testing is desired. Furthermore, the thermal degradation of AIV suggests that the heat treatment of feeds could be an alternative to chemical treatment when contamination is suspected. Collectively, the study observations indicate that AIV survivability in feed is relatively low, thus rendering it a low risk.

Mitigating the risk of African swine fever virus in feed with anti-viral chemical additives

African swine fever (ASF) is currently considered the most significant global threat to pork production worldwide. Disease caused by the ASF virus (ASFV) results in high case fatality of pigs. Importantly, ASF is a trade-limiting disease with substantial implications on both global pork and agricultural feed commodities. ASFV is transmissible through natural consumption of contaminated swine feed and is broadly stable across a wide range of commonly imported feed ingredients and conditions. The objective of the current study was to investigate the efficacy of medium-chain fatty acid and formaldehyde-based feed additives in inactivating ASFV. Feed additives were tested in cell culture and in feed ingredients under a transoceanic shipment model. Both chemical additives reduced ASFV infectivity in a dose-dependent manner. This study provides evidence that chemical feed additives may potentially serve as mitigants for reducing the risk of ASFV introduction and transmission through feed.

Avian influenza

Previous introductions of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) to the EU were most likely via migratory wild birds. A mathematical model has been developed which indicated that virus amplification and spread may take place when wild bird populations of sufficient size within EU become infected. Low pathogenic avian influenza virus (LPAIV) may reach similar maximum prevalence levels in wild bird populations to HPAIV but the risk of LPAIV infection of a poultry holding was estimated to be lower than that of HPAIV. Only few non-wild bird pathways were identified having a non-negligible risk of AI introduction. The transmission rate between animals within a flock is assessed to be higher for HPAIV than LPAIV. In very few cases, it could be proven that HPAI outbreaks were caused by intrinsic mutation of LPAIV to HPAIV but current knowledge does not allow a prediction as to if, and when this could occur. In gallinaceous poultry, passive surveillance through notification of suspicious clinical signs/mortality was identified as the most effective method for early detection of HPAI outbreaks. For effective surveillance in anseriform poultry, passive surveillance through notification of suspicious clinical signs/mortality needs to be accompanied by serological surveillance and/or a virological surveillance programme of birds found dead (bucket sampling). Serosurveillance is unfit for early warning of LPAI outbreaks at the individual holding level but could be effective in tracing clusters of LPAIV-infected holdings. In wild birds, passive surveillance is an appropriate method for HPAIV surveillance if the HPAIV infections are associated with mortality whereas active wild bird surveillance has a very low efficiency for detecting HPAIV. Experts estimated and emphasised the effect of implementing specific biosecurity measures on reducing the probability of AIV entering into a poultry holding. Human diligence is pivotal to select, implement and maintain specific, effective biosecurity measures.
