Trophic specialization drives morphological evolution in sea snakes

Viviparous sea snakes are the most rapidly speciating reptiles known, yet the ecological factors underlying this radiation are poorly understood. Here, we reconstructed dated trees for 75% of sea snake species and quantified body shape (forebody relative to hindbody girth), maximum body length and trophic diversity to examine how dietary specialization has influenced morphological diversification in this rapid radiation. We show that sea snake body shape and size are strongly correlated with the proportion of burrowing prey in the diet. Specialist predators of burrowing eels have convergently evolved a 'microcephalic' morphotype with dramatically reduced forebody relative to hindbody girth and intermediate body length. By comparison, snakes that predominantly feed on burrowing gobies are generally short-bodied and small-headed, but there is no evidence of convergent evolution. The eel specialists also exhibit faster rates of size and shape evolution compared to all other sea snakes, including those that feed on gobies. Our results suggest that trophic specialization to particular burrowing prey (eels) has invoked strong selective pressures that manifest as predictable and rapid morphological changes. Further studies are needed to examine the genetic and developmental mechanisms underlying these dramatic morphological changes and assess their role in sea snake speciation.

Concentrations of trace elements in the kidney, liver, muscle, and skin of short sea snake (Lapemis curtus) from the Strait of Hormuz Persian Gulf

To our knowledge, this is the first report into trace elements accumulation in tissues of the short sea snake (Lapemis curtus). Lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), vanadium (V), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn) were determined in the kidney, liver, skin, and muscle tissues of short sea snake, L. curtus, from the Strait of Hormuz during October 2011. Skins generally displayed the lowest trace element burdens. Kidneys displayed the highest Pb, Cd, V, Ni, and Cu mean concentrations (0.89, 0.04, 1.66, 6.22, and 20.23 μg g(-1) dry weight, respectively), while muscle exhibited the highest Zn levels (493.32 μg g(-1) dry weight). Concentration ranges of the selected trace elements were compared with those reported in other studies. Data presented here may be considered as a baseline for further ecotoxicological studies in sea snakes.

Distribution patterns of PAHs in different tissues of annulated sea snake (Hydrophis cyanocinctus) and short sea snake (Lapemis curtus) from the Hara Protected Area on the North Coast of the Persian Gulf, Iran

The levels of 22 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in the skin, liver, kidney and muscle tissues of annulated sea snake (Hydrophis cyanocinctus), and short sea snake (Lapemis curtus) collected from the Hara Protected Area, Persian Gulf during October 2010. Low molecular weight (≤3-rings) had the highest levels in skin, while high molecular weight (≥4-rings) was highest in the kidney. The lowest levels of analyzed PAHs were found in muscle in the both species. H. cyanocinctus (59.37 ng g(-1) dw) revealed to be significantly more contaminated than L. curtus (50.51 ng g(-1) dw). Naphtalene was the PAH most frequently detected and at the highest level in the different tissues both species. Di- and tri-cyclic PAHs were predominant in both species suggesting petrogenic origin rather than pyrogenic sources of PAHs. The present study represents the first data of contamination by PAHs in sea snake from the Persian Gulf.

Metal concentrations in selected tissues and main prey species of the annulated sea snake (Hydrophis cyanocinctus) in the Hara Protected Area, northeastern coast of the Persian Gulf, Iran

This study is the first detailed ecotoxicological study of the annulated sea snake, Hydrophis cyanocinctus. Concentrations of lead, cadmium, nickel and vanadium were evaluated in muscle, liver, kidney, skin and blood of the annulated sea snake (H. cyanocinctus) and in the whole bodies of its main prey species (Periophthalmus waltoni and Boleophthalmus dussumieri) in the Hara Protected Area, the Persian Gulf. The mean concentrations of lead and vanadium were highest in the kidney, which identified the kidney as a target organ for metals in sea snakes as it is in other reptilian groups. Mean concentrations of cadmium and nickel were highest in the liver and skin, respectively. Mean cadmium concentrations were significantly higher in the liver compared to prey species, which indicated that prey items may be a source of cadmium for the annulated sea snake in the study area. Data presented here may be considered as a baseline for further ecotoxicological studies in sea snakes.

Morphological integration and adaptation in the snake feeding system: a comparative phylogenetic study

A long-standing hypothesis for the adaptive radiation of macrostomatan snakes is that their enlarged gape--compared to both lizards and basal snakes--enables them to consume "large" prey. At first glance, this hypothesis seems plausible, or even likely, given the wealth of studies showing a tight match between maximum consumed prey mass and head size in snakes. However, this hypothesis has never been tested within a comparative framework. We address this issue here by testing this hypothesis in 12 monophyletic clades of macrostomatan snakes using recently published phylogenies, published maximum consumed prey mass data and morphological measurements taken from a large sample of museum specimens. Our nonphylogenetically corrected analysis shows that head width--independent of body size--is significantly related to mean maximum consumed prey mass among these clades, and this relationship becomes even more significant when phylogeny is taken into account. Therefore, these data do support the hypothesis that head shape is adapted to prey size in snakes. Additionally, we calculated a phylogenetically corrected morphological variance-covariance matrix to examine the role of morphological integration during head shape evolution in snakes. This matrix shows that head width strongly covaries with both jaw length and out-lever length of the lower jaw. As a result, selection on head width will likely be associated with concomitant changes in jaw length and lower jaw out-lever length in snakes.
