Systematic revision of the Spotted and Northern Dusky Salamanders (Plethodontidae: Desmognathus conanti and D. fuscus), with six new species from the eastern United States

Spotted and Northern Dusky Salamanders (Desmognathus conanti and D. fuscus) have a long and complex taxonomic history. At least 10 other currently recognized species in the genus were either described from populations previously considered D. fuscus, described as or later considered subspecies thereof, or later considered synonyms thereof, before ultimately being recognized as distinct. Recent molecular analyses have also revealed extensive cryptic diversity within both species, which are polyphyletic assemblages of 13 distinct mitochondrial lineages with 5.7-10.3% uncorrected 'p' distances in the COI barcode locus. Based on phylogenomic data and population-clustering analyses considering admixture between lineages, 11 candidate species were circumscribed by recent authors. Those within D. conanti are also ecomorphologically variable, comprising both large, robust, keel-tailed populations, and small, gracile, round-tailed forms. Evaluating their distinctiveness based on genetic, geographic, and morphological evidence, we conclude that six of the candidates represent new species: Desmognathus anicetus sp. nov., D. bairdi sp. nov., D. campi sp. nov., D. catahoula sp. nov., D. lycos sp. nov., and D. tilleyi sp. nov. Consequently, we recognize eight total species from populations formerly associated with the nominal species D. conanti and D. fuscus, the re-delimited concepts of which also contain additional phylogeographic lineage diversity that may represent further distinct species. In addition to existing mitochondrial and nuclear phylogenetic, network, and clustering results, we present preliminary analyses of linear morphometrics to bolster diagnostic specificity based on phenotypic characteristics. These changes stabilize the previously paraphyletic taxonomy of species-level lineages within Desmognathus, though additional cryptic diversity may exist both within the species considered here, and elsewhere in the genus.

Mitochondrial DNA and Population Genomics Reveal Additional Cryptic Diversity in the Green Salamander (Subgenus Castaneides) Species Complex

Cryptic species present particular challenges to biodiversity conservation, as true species diversity and distributional boundaries remain obscured. However, modern molecular tools have afforded unparalleled opportunities to elucidate cryptic species, define their distributions, and, ultimately, develop conservation interventions to extend their evolutionary trajectories into the future. The Green Salamander (Aneides aeneus) complex provides an evolutionary focal point and the Appalachian Highlands an ecological context for the exploration of cryptic speciation in an imperiled taxon. A recent study uncovered significant levels of genetic and genomic variation geographically structured across the Appalachian Highlands, including up to four lineages, one of which (A. caryaensis) was described therein. Here we extend the genetic and genomic examination of the Castaneides species complex by intensive sampling of additional populations along Cumberland Plateau and Appalachian Valley and Ridge of Alabama and Tennessee, employing both mtDNA and RADseq species delimitation approaches to delineate cryptic diversity and boundaries in this region. Analyses of two mitochondrial loci (nd4 and cytb) identified two reciprocally monophyletic lineages, which are also supported by population clustering and phylogenetic analyses of SNPs, that identified two population clusters with no evidence of gene flow. Our genetic and genomic results support the recognition of two additional cryptic lineages in the Castaneides species complex. Ultimately, this information is critical in developing successful adaptive management strategies for this important and endemic component of Appalachian Highland biodiversity.

Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-Assisted Detection of Rock Outcrops in Appalachian Hardwood Forests

The identification of small habitat features embedded within forest ecosystems is a challenge for many wildlife inventory and monitoring programs, especially for those involving rock outcrop specialist taxa. Rock outcrops are often difficult to remotely detect in dense Appalachian hardwood forests, as most outcrops remain hidden under the forest canopy and therefore invisible when relying on aerial orthoimagery to pinpoint habitat features. We investigated the ability for light detection and ranging point cloud data to identify small rock outcrops during the environmental assessment phase of a proposed management project on the Jefferson National Forest in Virginia. We specifically compared this approach with the visual identification of rock outcrops across the same area using aerial orthoimagery. Our light detection and ranging-based approach identified three times as many rock outcrop sites as aerial orthoimagery, resulting in the field verification of four times as many previously unknown populations of green salamanders Aneides aeneus (a rock outcrop specialist amphibian of high conservation concern) than would have been possible if relying on aerial orthoimagery alone to guide surveys. Our results indicate that light detection and ranging-based methods may provide an effective, efficient, and low-error approach that can remotely identify below-canopy rock outcrops embedded within Appalachian forests, especially when researchers lack pre-existing knowledge of local terrain and the location of habitat features.

The Evolution of Derived Monomorphism From Sexual Dimorphism: A Case Study on Salamanders

While sexual dimorphism has long received special attention from biologists, derived monomorphism, the condition in which both males and females express similar derived features has been less well studied. Historically, the appearance of "male-like" features in females has been explained by the genetic correlation between the sexes. Recent work emphasizes the importance of studying the independent selective forces on both females and males to understand sexual dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism and derived monomorphism in the genus Aneides are examined in light of predictions of social selection. Aneides hardii shows the greatest degree of sexual dimorphism in snout-vent length and head width, with the other species of Aneides less sexually dimorphic. This reduced dimorphism, however, is not a return to an ancestral monomorphic state, but rather exemplifies derived monomorphism because females express traits that were limited in expression to males of ancestral species. Instead of calling these "male-typical" traits in females, I suggest the term "derived monomorphic" traits as these traits are typical in these females, and "derived monomorphic" can apply to both sexes. Increased attention to studying the patterns and ecological significance of derived monomorphism will shed light on the underlying selective forces, including sexual selection, on both females and males.
