Abstract
Mercury (Hg) contamination affects all ecosystems worldwide. Its deleterious effects on wildlife and humans encompass a diversity of impacts from individual to population levels. In the present study, we quantified Hg concentration across various tissues (blood, brain, muscle, and toe) of green toads (Bufotes viridis) and investigated the use of toe clips as a proxy of Hg concentration in internal tissues, including the brain. Our results show distinct patterns of Hg contamination across tissues, with the highest Hg concentration in the blood with 1.496 ± 0.772 µg.g-1 dry weight (dw), followed by muscle tissue with 0.687 ± 0.376 µg.g-1 dw, brain tissue with 0.542 ± 0.319 µg.g-1 dw, and toes with 0.229 ± 0.143 µg.g-1 dw. A strong relationship has been found between toe and brain Hg concentrations (R2 = 0.857, p < 0.001). These results emphasize the potential of toe clipping as a reliable, non-lethal method for predicting brain Hg concentrations in the green toad. Further, results open the possibility of assessing the potential association between Hg contamination and the cognitive performance of amphibians.

Abstract
Multiple methods for collecting genetic samples from amphibians exist, each with their own implications for study design, animal welfare, and costs. Toe clipping is one common method, but there is ongoing debate regarding its potential detriment. Less invasive methods should be implemented, if efficacious, as amphibians are a particularly vulnerable vertebrate group. Skin and buccal swabbing are less invasive methods for genetic sampling, but the potential for contamination and a lower yield of DNA may exist. To compare these methods, we gathered skin swabs, buccal swabs, and toe clips from the same individuals of a relatively small anuran species, Blanchard's Cricket Frog (Acris blanchardi). We then compared DNA yield, DNA purity, amplification success rate, and genotypic data quality among sample types. We found toe clips and buccal swabs generated similar DNA yield and purity, with skin swabs yielding significantly less DNA of significantly lower purity than the other sample types. Amplification success rate was significantly higher using toe clips compared to the other sample types, though buccal swab samples amplified more readily than skin swabs. Genotypic data from toe clips and buccal swabs did not differ significantly in quality, but skin swab data quality was significantly lowest among sample types. Thus, skin swabbing could produce erroneous data in some situations, but buccal swabbing is likely an effective substitute to toe clipping, even for small species. Our results can help future researchers select which genetic sampling method might best suit their research needs.

Abstract
Feeding upregulates immune function and the systemic and local (gastrointestinal tract) concentrations of some immunoregulatory hormones, as corticosterone (CORT) and melatonin (MEL), in mammals and anurans. However, little is known about the immune and hormonal regulation in response to feeding in other ectothermic vertebrates, especially snakes, in which the postprandial metabolic changes are pronounced. Here, we investigated the effects feeding have on hormonal and innate immune responses in the snake, Boa constrictor. We divided juvenile males into two groups: fasting and fed with mice (30% of body mass). We measured the rates of oxygen consumption, plasma CORT levels, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (HL ratio), plasma bacterial killing ability (BKA), and stomach and intestine MEL in fasting snakes and 48 h after meal intake. We observed increased rates of oxygen consumption, plasma CORT levels, and HL ratio, along with a tendency of decreased stomach and intestine MEL in fed snakes compared to fasting ones. BKA was not affected by feeding. Overall, we found that feeding modulates metabolic rates, CORT levels, and immune cell distribution in boas. Increased baseline CORT may be important to mobilize energy to support the metabolic increment during the postprandial period. Increased HL ratio might be an immunoregulatory effect of increased CORT, which has been shown in different physiological situations such as in response to immune challenge. Our results suggest that feeding activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and modulates immune cell redistribution, possibly contributing to fighting potential injuries and infections derived from predation and from pathogens present in ingested food.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The amphibian chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), has been implicated as a primary cause of decline in many species around the globe. However, there are some species and populations that are known to become infected in the wild, yet declines have not been observed. Here we conducted a yearlong capture-mark-recapture study and a 2-year long disease monitoring study of northern cricket frogs, Acris crepitans, in the lowland subtropical forests of Louisiana. RESULTS We found little evidence for an impact of Bd infection on survival; however, Bd infection did appear to cause sublethal effects, including increased capture probability in the field. CONCLUSIONS Our study suggests that even in apparently stable populations, where Bd does not appear to cause mortality, there may be sublethal effects of infection that can impact a host population's dynamics and structure. Understanding and documenting such sublethal effects of infection on wild, seemingly stable populations is important, particularly for predicting future population declines.

Abstract
Amphibians have been declining worldwide and the comprehension of the threats that they face could be improved by using mark–recapture models to estimate vital rates of natural populations. Recently, the consequences of marking amphibians have been under discussion and the effects of toe clipping on survival are debatable, although it is still the most common technique for individually identifying amphibians. The passive integrated transponder (PIT tag) is an alternative technique, but comparisons among marking techniques in free-ranging populations are still lacking. We compared these two marking techniques using mark–recapture models to estimate apparent survival and recapture probability of a neotropical population of the blacksmith tree frog, Hypsiboas faber. We tested the effects of marking technique and number of toe pads removed while controlling for sex. Survival was similar among groups, although slightly decreased from individuals with one toe pad removed, to individuals with two and three toe pads removed, and finally to PIT-tagged individuals. No sex differences were detected. Recapture probability slightly increased with the number of toe pads removed and was the lowest for PIT-tagged individuals. Sex was an important predictor for recapture probability, with males being nearly five times more likely to be recaptured. Potential negative effects of both techniques may include reduced locomotion and high stress levels. We recommend the use of covariates in models to better understand the effects of marking techniques on frogs. Accounting for the effect of the technique on the results should be considered, because most techniques may reduce survival. Based on our results, but also on logistical and cost issues associated with PIT tagging, we suggest the use of toe clipping with anurans like the blacksmith tree frog.
