Encapsulation of the Acanthocephalan Corynosoma strumosum (Rudolphi, 1802) LÜHE, 1904, in the Intermediate Host Spinulogammarus ochotensis

Impact of anthropogenous environmental factors on the marine ecosystem of trophically transmitted helminths and hosting seabirds: Focus on North Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic and the Arctic seas

Alongside natural factors, human activities have a major impact on the marine environment and thus influence processes in vulnerable ecosystems. The major purpose of this review is to summarise the current understanding as to how manmade factors influence the marine biocenosis of helminths, their intermediate hosts as well as seabirds as their final hosts. Moreover, it highlights current knowledge gaps regarding this ecosystem, which should be closed in order to gain a more complete understanding of these interactions. This work is primarily focused on helminths parasitizing seabirds of the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. The complex life cycles of seabird helminths may be impacted by fishing and aquaculture, as they interfere with the abundance of fish and seabird species, while the latter also affects the geographical distribution of intermediate hosts (marine bivalve and fish species), and may therefore alter the intertwined marine ecosystem. Increasing temperatures and seawater acidification as well as environmental pollutants may have negative or positive effects on different parts of this interactive ecosystem and may entail shifts in the abundance or regional distribution of parasites and/or intermediate and final hosts. Organic pollutants and trace elements may weaken the immune system of the hosting seabirds and hence affect the final host's ability to control the endoparasites. On the other hand, in some cases helminths seem to function as a sink for trace elements resulting in decreased concentrations of heavy metals in birds' tissues. Furthermore, this article also describes the role of helminths in mass mortality events amongst seabird populations, which beside natural causes (weather, viral and bacterial infections) have anthropogenous origin as well (e.g. oil spills, climate change, overfishing and environmental pollution).

Migration and ultrastructure of the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus gadi Zoega in Müller, 1776 in intermediate host under experimental conditions

Amphipods Eogammarus tiuschovi were experimentally infected by the acanthocephalan Echinorhynchus gadi (Acanthocephala: Echinorhynchidae). Within the first four days post-infection, acanthors of the acanthocephalan caused the cellular response of the host, which ended with their complete encapsulation on day 4 post-infection. The acanthors obtained through the experiment were examined ultrastructurally. Two syncytia (frontal and epidermal) and a central nuclear mass are found in the acanthor's body. The frontal syncytium has 3-4 nuclei and contains secretory granules with homogeneous, electron-dense contents. Since the secretory granules occupy only the anterior one-third of this syncytium, it is suggested that the contents of these granules are involved in the acanthor's migration through the gut wall of the amphipod. The central nuclear mass consists of an aggregation of fibrillar bodies and a few electron-light nuclei distributed on the periphery. Some of these nuclei, located near the central nuclear mass, are assumed to be a source of the acanthocephalan's internal organs. The epidermal syncytium surrounds the frontal syncytium and the central nuclear mass. It is represented by a superficial cytoplasmic layer, but the bulk of the cytoplasm is concentrated in the posterior one-third of the acanthor's body. Syncytial nuclei are evenly distributed throughout the cytoplasm. The muscular system of the acanthors consists of 10 longitudinal muscle fibers located below the superficial cytoplasmic layer and two muscle retractors crossing the frontal syncytium.

Host records and geographical distribution of Corynosoma magdaleni, C. semerme and C. strumosum (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae)

A literature survey was conducted to investigate the host and geographical distribution patterns of three Corynosoma species (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae), viz. C.magdaleni, C.semerme and C.strumosum. All three species appear to be restricted to the Northern Hemisphere. Occurrence records of C.magdaleni are limited to the Northern Atlantic coasts, while C.semerme has a circumpolar distribution. The geographical range of Corynosomastrumosum encompasses the distributions of the other two species, but also extends into warmer southern regions. Some Corynosoma populations are living with their definitive hosts in very isolated locations, such as in the brackish Baltic Sea or different freshwater lakes (e.g. Lake Saimaa). All three species have a heteroxenous life cycle, comprising a peracaridan intermediate host, a fish paratenic host and a mammalian definitive host. Occasionally, an acanthocephalan may enter an accidental host, from which it is unable to complete its life cycle. The host records reported here are categorised by type, i.e. intermediate, paratenic, definitive or accidental. While most of the definitive hosts are shared amongst the three Corynosoma species, C.strumosum showed the broadest range of paratenic hosts, which reflects its more extensive geographical distribution. One aim of this study and extensive literature summary is to guide future sampling efforts and therewith contribute to throw more light on the on-going species and morphotype discussion for this interesting parasite species.
