Abstract
Ultrastructural characters of spermiogenesis and the mature spermatozoon of the cestode Meggittina gerbilli (Cyclophyllidea: Catenotaeniidae), a parasite of the Lesser Egyptian gerbil (Gerbillus gerbillus) and the North African gerbil (Gerbillus campestris) (Rodentia: Muridae) in the Djebel Dahar (South of Tunisia), were studied using transmission electron microscopy. The spermiogenesis of M. gerbilli is of Bâ and Marchand's type III, which is mainly characterized by a proximodistal fusion of a single flagellum with a cytoplasmic extension. In this catenotaeniid, the proximal fusion is preceded by a 90° rotation of the flagellum. The spermatozoon is a Levron et al. type VI, which presents a single axoneme with the 9 + '1' trepaxonematan pattern, a periaxonemal sheath, two crest-like bodies, twisted cortical microtubules, and a spiraled nucleus. The obtained results show similarities with the remaining studied catenotaeniids, namely Catenotaenia pusilla and Skrjabinotaenia lobata. The results are compared and discussed according to several characteristics found in the catenotaeniids and other studied cyclophyllideans.

Abstract
The mature spermatozoon of Khawia armeniaca, a monozoic caryophyllidean parasite of templar fish Capoeta capoeta sevangi (De Filippi, 1865) from the Lake Sevan, Armenia, has been studied using transmission electron microscopy and cytochemical technique of Thiéry (1967) for the first time. The mature spermatozoon of K. armeniaca consists of a single axoneme with the 9+'1' trepaxonematan structure, cortical microtubules and nucleus which are situated parallel to the longitudinal axis of the spermatozoon, and a moderately electrondense cytoplasm with glycogen particles. The cortical microtubules are arranged in one continuous semicircle beneath the plasma membrane in Region II and anterior part of Region III of the mature spermatozoon. The two opposite rows of cortical microtubules are observed in the remaining nuclear and at the beginning of the postnuclear part (Regions III, IV) of the male gamete The number of cortical microtubules is remarkably variable in the spermatozoa of various Khawia species. K. armeniaca exhibits the highest number of cortical microtubules in comparison with K. sinensis and K. rossittensis. Glycogen was detected in the cytoplasm of prenuclear (II), nuclear (III) and postnuclear (IV) regions with different ultrastructural organization of the mature spermatozoon of K. armeniaca. Variations of sperm ultrastructural characters within caryophyllideans and other cestodes are discussed.

Abstract
Monozoic caryophyllidean cestodes, intestinal parasites of cyprinid fishes, represent a group of tapeworms with an unclear evolutionary history. As spermatology may provide phylogenetically important data, the spermiogenesis and ultrastructure of the mature spermatozoon have been investigated using an integrative approach combining transmission electron microscopy, cytochemistry and electron tomography in Khawia rossittensis (Szidat, 1937). The process of spermatid formation is accompanied by the presence of ultrastructural characters not described in traditional models of spermiogenesis, e.g., apical electron-dense material, the two striated roots situated unusually opposite each other, branching of typical striated roots, an intercentriolar body comprising five electron-dense and four electron-lucent layers, rotation of both free flagella and flagellar buds to the median cytoplasmic process at 90°, and a complete proximodistal fusion. The synchronous rotation of both flagellar buds and growing free flagella is an evolutionarily linked pattern favouring the hypothesis that the Caryophyllidea are not ancestral but are secondarily derived from polyzoic forms. Electron tomography analysis has revealed a unique feature of two helicoidal tubular structures in the central electron-dense core of the axoneme of mature spermatozoon. These data provide new insights into the architecture of the 9 + '1' axoneme, which is shared by male gametes of all trepaxonematan Platyhelminthes.

Abstract
Spermiogenesis in progenetic and adult stages of Archigetes sieboldi Leuckart, 1878, a tapeworm parasitic in oligochaetes and fish respectively, has been examined using transmission electron microscopy and cytochemical staining for glycogen. General pattern of spermiogenesis is essentially like that of other caryophyllideans, i.e., apical dense material in the zone of differentiation in the early stages of spermiogenesis, rotation of free flagellum and a flagellar bud, and proximo-distal fusion. Interestingly, rotation of a free flagellum and flagellar bud to the median cytoplasmic process (MCP) has been observed unconventionally at > 90° only in progenetic stages. Typical striated roots associated with the centrioles occur rarely in A. sieboldi, and only in form of faint structures in advanced stages of spermiogenesis. In contrast to most caryophyllideans studied to date, penetration of the nucleus into the spermatid body has started before the fusion of the free flagellum with the MCP. This feature has been reported rarely but exclusively in the family Caryophyllaeidae. The unipartite mature spermatozoon of A. sieboldi is composed of one axoneme of the 9 + '1' trepaxonematan pattern with its centriole, parallel nucleus, and parallel cortical microtubules which are situated in a moderately electron-dense cytoplasm with glycogen particles. An unusual arrangement of cortical microtubules in the two parallel rows in region I of the spermatozoon is described here for the first time in the Caryophyllidea. Ultrastructural data on spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon in A. sieboldi from tubuficids and carp are compared and discussed with those in other caryophyllideans and/or Neodermata.

Abstract
The present study attempts to establish the sperm ultrastructure baseline for Taenia hydatigena, which is essential for the future research on the location of specific proteins involved in spermatogenesis in this species. Thus, the ultrastructural organisation of the mature spermatozoon is described by means of transmission electron microscopy. Live tapeworms were obtained from an experimentally infected dog in the Department of Pathology and Public Health of the Agronomic and Veterinary Institute Hassan II of Rabat (Morocco). The spermatozoon of T. hydatigena is a filiform cell, which is tapered at both extremities and lacks mitochondria. It exhibits all the characteristics of type VII spermatozoon of tapeworms, namely a single axoneme, a crested body, spiralled cortical microtubules and nucleus, a periaxonemal sheath and intracytoplasmic walls. Other interesting characteristics are the presence of a 2000 nm long apical cone in its anterior extremity and only the axoneme in its posterior extremity. The ultrastructural characters of the spermatozoon of T. hydatigena are compared with those of other cestodes studied to date, with particular emphasis on representatives of the genus Taenia.

Abstract
The present study focuses on the ultrastructural characteristics of both spermiogenesis and the spermatozoon in the order Trypanorhyncha. New ultrastructural data are presented for two species of the unexplored superfamily Tentacularioidea, Nybelinia queenslandensis, and Kotorella pronosoma. The present study also provides supplementary data on the superfamily Eutetrarhynchoidea, with the analysis of spermiogenesis and spermatozoon of two progrillotiids, Progrillotia dasyatidis and Pro. pastinacae, and new ultrastructural data concerning spermiogenesis in the eutetrarhynchids Dollfusiella spinulifera and Parachristianella trygonis. Spermiogenesis in trypanorhynchs follows the Bâ and Marchand's type I and the ultrastructural organisation of the mature spermatozoon corresponds to the Levron et al.'s type I. The most remarkable characters concerns the number of electron-dense plates constituting the intercentriolar body during spermiogenesis and in the variability of the arc-like row of thick cortical microtubules present in the anterior areas of the spermatozoon because of its variability according to the species.

Abstract
Spermiogenesis and ultrastructure of mature spermatozoon of the caryophyllidean cestode Hunterella nodulosa, a parasite of suckers (Catostomidae), have been studied by transmission electron microscopy. This monozoic tapeworm is unique in its mode of attachment and represents the second North American species studied. The process of spermiogenesis of H. nodulosa follows the general pattern already described in other caryophyllideans. The most characteristic feature is the presence of a slight rotation of the flagellar bud, which seems to be a typical character of spermiogenesis in this cestode group. The mature spermatozoon of H. nodulosa is characterized by the presence of one axoneme of 9 + "1" type of the trepaxonematan flatworms surrounded by a semi-arc of cortical microtubules in its anterior extremity, parallel nucleus and cortical microtubules arranged in a parallel pattern, which corresponds to the Type III pattern of cestode spermatozoa according to Levron et al. (2010). Comparison of the present data with those available for other caryophyllideans did not reveal substantial differences, even though they belong to different families, infect different hosts (catostomid, cyprinid and siluriform fishes) and occur in distant zoogeographical regions. This indicates uniformity of the process of sperm formation and spermatozoon ultrastructure in one of the evolutionarily most ancient groups of tapeworms.
