Occurrence of Acanthocephalans in Largemouth Bass and Smallmouth Bass (Centrarchidae) From Gull Lake, Michigan

Silver Shiner, Notropis photogenis, fecundity and parasite infections during the reproductive period

The reproductive period is a critical part of a species' life-history. Estimating species-specific fecundity can improve demographic models aimed at developing recovery targets for imperilled species. We provide egg diameter and fecundity estimates and develop a length-fecundity relationship for Silver Shiner, Notropis photogenis (Cope,1865), a small-bodied freshwater species listed as Threatened under Canada’s Species at Risk Act. Furthermore, we document the incidence of an acanthocephalan parasite (thorny-headed worm) Leptorhychoides thecatus (Linton, 1891), in the gastrointestinal tract of Silver Shiner, which is the first published record of the parasite in this species. Silver Shiner egg diameters (average ± standard deviation) were 0.61 ± 0.15 mm and ranged from 0.13-0.92 mm. Fecundity ranged from 311-2768 eggs and was significantly higher in age 2-3+ fish (1475 ± 570 eggs) compared to age 1+ fish (576 ± 270 eggs). We highlight that parasite infection negatively impacted the body condition of individuals and that additional work is needed to determine the impact of parasite infestation on reproductive output, recruitment, susceptibility to predation, and survival of Silver Shiner in Canada. The fecundity and egg diameter estimates for Canadian Silver Shiner provided here can be incorporated into future populations modelling for this threatened species.

Molecular characterization ofNeoechinorhynchus cylindratusVan Cleave, 1913 (Acanthocephala: Neoechinorhynchidae), a parasite of the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) in northern Mexico

Members of the genusNeoechinorhynchusStiles & Hassall, 1905 are endoparasites of freshwater fishes, brackish water fishes, and freshwater turtles distributed worldwide. In North America, 33 species have been described. One of the most widely distributed species in the eastern United States and Canada isNeoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) cylindratus,a common acanthocephalan that infects centrarchid fishes. In the current study, adult specimens ofN. (N) cylindratuswere collected from largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) from the Purificación River in northern Mexico. In the same freshwater system, two additional congeneric species (Neoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) emyditoidesandNeoechinorhynchus (Neoechinorhynchus) panucensis) were collected and analysed. Sequences of the large subunit, internal transcribed spacers ITS1 and ITS2, 5.8S from nuclear DNA, and sequences of the cytochromecoxidase subunit I (cox1) from mitochondrial DNA were generated and aligned with other sequences obtained from GenBank. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses inferred for each dataset showed thatN. (N) panucensis,N. (N) emyditoidesandN. (N) cylindratuswere nested within several clades, indicating that these species do not share a common ancestor. Our phylogenies also revealed that the genusNeoechinorhynchusis paraphyletic, requiring further taxonomic revision using phylogenetic systematics and re-examination of morphological and ecological data. The presence of severalN. (N) cylindratusadults in northern Mexico allowed us to typify this species for the first time using a combination of morphological and molecular characteristics. The current record shows a wide distribution range ofN. (N) cylindratusacross Canada, the United States and Mexico in the Nearctic region.

Cryptic speciation and patterns of phenotypic variation of a highly variable acanthocephalan parasite

An investigation of a parasite species that is broadly host- and habitat-specific and exhibits alternative transmission strategies was undertaken to examine intraspecific variability and if it can be attributed to cryptic speciation or environmentally induced plasticity. Specimens of an acanthocephalan parasite, Leptorhynchoides thecatus, collected throughout North America were analysed phylogenetically using sequences of the cytochrome oxidase I gene and the internal transcribed spacer region. Variation in host use, habitat use, and transmission were examined in a phylogenetic context to determine if they were more likely phylogenetically based or due to environmental influences. Results indicated that most of the variation detected can be explained by the presence of cryptic species. The majority of these species have narrow host and microhabitat specificities although one species, which also may comprise a complex of species, exhibits broad host and habitat specificity. Alternate transmission pathways only occurred in two of the cryptic species and correlate with host use patterns. Taxa that mature in piscivorous piscine hosts use a paratenic fish host to bridge the trophic gap between their amphipod intermediate host and piscivorous definitive host. One potential example of environmentally induced variation was identified in three populations of these parasites, which differ on their abilities to infect different host species.

GEOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF HOST USE, DEVELOPMENT, AND HABITAT USE OF AN ACANTHOCEPHALAN SPECIES, LEPTORHYNCHOIDES THECATUS

Leptorhynchoides thecatus (Linton, 1891), an acanthocephalan parasite of freshwater fishes, varies in host use, development, and habitat use throughout North America. Spatial structure of these characteristics was examined from data extracted from the literature. Geographic patterns were inferred from point comparisons using correllograms and then tested with Moran's I statistic for global and local significance, and visually from regional means within major river drainages. Species of Micropterus Lacepède, 1802 (black basses) were common hosts in most regions, except the Lower Mississippi and South Atlantic regions where species of Lepomis Rafinesque, 1819 (sunfishes) were common hosts. Development, described as the proportions of adults relative to cystacanths (extraintestinal juveniles), decreased with latitude. Habitat use of L. thecatus showed marked geographic patterns. Leptorhynchoides thecatus occurred in the intestine of sunfishes in the South Atlantic and Lower Mississippi regions, in the ceca in fish of all species included in the study in the Missouri and Texas-Gulf regions, and both in ceca and intestines in fish of all species in northern regions. Leptorhynchoides thecatus showed geographic patterning within the variable traits across the range of the species. These patterns may be the result of ecological factors or of genetic differences that might indicate L. thecatus comprises multiple cryptic species.
