Abstract
Background: Primary dysmenorrhea is a leading cause of chronic cyclic pelvic pain, contributing to a reduced quality of life and sleep disturbances in women. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) in improving the quality of life, sleep, and overall health perceptions of participants compared to a control group of women with dysmenorrhea over short-term, medium-term, and long-term periods. Methods: A single-blind, controlled clinical trial was conducted, with participants randomly assigned to an experimental group (receiving TTNS) or a control group (receiving sham TTNS). Both groups underwent 12, weekly 30 min sessions using the NeuroTrac™ PelviTone electrostimulation device. Outcomes related to quality of life, sleep deficiency, and overall improvement were evaluated at three time points: short-term (post-treatment), medium-term (1-3 months), and long-term (6 months). Results: Of the 61 participants initially randomized (31 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group), 55 completed the study and were included in the final analysis. A statistically significant improvement was observed in the experimental group in both physical and mental health components, as measured by the SF-36v2® questionnaire, following 12 weeks of intervention, compared to the control group, persisting 6 months after the intervention. Additionally, statistically significant differences in overall improvement were noted between the two groups, as measured by the PGIC questionnaire at the end of treatment (p = 0.0103) and 6 months post-treatment (p = 0.0432). Conclusions: TTNS appears to be a safe and effective strategy for enhancing quality of life and overall health in women with PD, potentially reducing the reliance on pharmacological treatments or more invasive methods.

Abstract
Primary dysmenorrhea is considered one of the main causes of pelvic pain during a woman's childbearing years, resulting in poor quality of life. The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of transcutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (TTNS) in painful symptomatology improvement and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intake reduction in women with primary dysmenorrhea (PD) compared with a control group in the short, medium, and long terms. A single-blind, controlled clinical trial was developed. Participants were randomized to the experimental (TTNS) and control group (sham TTNS). Both groups received 12-weekly 30-min sessions with a NeuroTracTM PelviTone electrostimulation device. The intensity and severity of pain and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) intake were evaluated in the short-term (after treatment), medium-term (1-3 months), and long-term (6 months). A total of 61 participants were randomized, with a split of 31 (experimental group) and 30 (control group), but 55 participants completed the study and were analyzed. Statistically significant differences between both groups in the maximum pain intensity decrease (F = 4.88, p = 0.0043) measured with the visual analogue scale, as well as NSAID intake decrease (F = 4.68, p = 0.011) and days of their ingestion (F = 4.57, p = 0.012) occurred in the short term. Furthermore, significant decreases in the total number of NSAIDs ingested during the cycle (F = 3.82, p = 0.011) and the number of days on which patients ingested NSAIDs (F = 3.59, p = 0.015) in the medium-long term occurred. TTNS could be an effective and safe strategy to reduce pain caused by PD, which could reduce or complement the use of pharmacological techniques and other more invasive methods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Faecal incontinence (FI) is common, with a significant impact on quality of life. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is a therapy for FI; however, its role has recently been questioned. Here we report the short-term clinical and manometric outcomes in a large tertiary centre. METHODS A retrospective review of a prospective PTNS database was performed, extracting patient-reported FI outcome measures including bowel diary, the St Marks's Incontinence Score (SMIS) and Manchester Health Questionnaire (MHQ). Successful treatment was > 50% improvement in symptoms, whilst a partial response was 25-50% improvement. High-resolution anorectal manometry (HRAM) results before and after PTNS were recorded. RESULTS Data were available from 135 patients [119 (88%) females; median age: 60 years (range: 27-82years)]. Overall, patients reported a reduction in urge FI (2.5-1) and passive FI episodes (2-1.5; p < 0.05) alongside a reduction in SMIS (16.5-14) and MHQ (517.5-460.0; p < 0.001). Some 76 (56%) patients reported success, whilst a further 20 (15%) reported a partial response. There were statistically significant reductions in rectal balloon thresholds and an increase in incremental squeeze pressure; however, these changes were independent of treatment success. CONCLUSION Patients report PTNS improves FI symptoms in the short term. Despite this improvement, changes in HRAM parameters were independent of this success. HRAM may be unable to measure the clinical effect of PTNS, or there remains the possibility of a placebo effect. Further work is required to define the role of PTNS in the treatment of FI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sacral nerve neuromodulation (SNM) has been considered the optimal second-line treatment for fecal incontinence (FI). However, SNM involves high cost and requires highly skilled operators. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) has emerged as an alternative treatment modality for FI, yielding varying clinical outcomes. We conducted this meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of PTNS compared to sham electrical stimulation for FI. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies from May 12, 2012 to May 12, 2022. RESULTS Four randomized controlled studies were included in this review, involving a total of 439 adult patients with FI (300 in the PTNS group and 194 in the sham electrical stimulation group). Our meta-analysis revealed that PTNS demonstrated superior efficacy in reducing weekly episodes of FI compared to the control groups (MD - 1.6, 95% CI - 2.94 to - 0.26, p = 0.02, I2 = 30%). Furthermore, a greater proportion of patients in the PTNS group reported more than a 50% reduction in FI episodes per week (RR 0.73, 95% CI 0.57-0.94, p = 0.02, I2 = 6%). However, no significant differences were observed in any domains of the FI Quality of Life (QoL) and St Mark's incontinence scores (MD - 2.41, 95% CI - 5.1 to 0.27, p = 0.08, I2 = 67%). Importantly, no severe adverse events related to PTNS were reported in any of the participants. CONCLUSIONS Our meta-analysis revealed that PTNS was more effective than sham stimulation in reducing FI episodes and led to a higher proportion of patients reporting more than a 50% reduction in weekly FI episodes.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to summarize relevant data from previous systematic reviews (SRs) and conduct comprehensive research on the clinical effects of posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS), via the transcutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (TPTNS) or percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PPTNS) method on fecal incontinence (FI). MATERIALS AND METHODS In adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses guidelines, a systematic search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. We included English-language, full-text SRs reporting outcomes for FI following either PPTNS or TPTNS. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. In addition, reanalyzing the meta-analyses was conducted using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software version 3.0 to achieve effect sizes and the level of statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. RESULTS From a total of 835 citations, 14 SRs met our inclusion criteria. Four of these also conducted a meta-analysis. Most SRs reported an overall improvement in different study parameters, including bowel habits and quality of life. However, there were major inconsistencies across the results. The most studied outcome was FI episodes, followed by incontinence score. The summary outcomes showed no statistically significant changes in comparing PTNS with sham or sacral nerve stimulation (SNS) for FI (p > 0.05). However, the results of subgroup analysis based on the type of intervention in the control group revealed that FI episodes were significantly fewer than in the PTNS arm, whereas PTNS led to fewer episodes of FI than did the sham. In terms of incontinence score, the results showed that PTNS compared with sham did not change the incontinence score; however, SNS improved the score significantly in one eligible study for reanalysis when compared with PTNS (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The findings of the current umbrella review suggest that PTNS can potentially benefit patients with FI. However, this is concluded from studies with a limited population, disregarding the etiology of FI and with limited follow-up duration. Therefore, caution must be taken in contemplating the results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional constipation can lead to painful defecations, fecal incontinence, and abdominal pain, significantly affecting a child's quality of life. Treatment options include non-pharmacological and pharmacological approaches, but some cases are intractable and require alternative interventions like neuromodulation. A subtype of neuromodulation, called Transcutaneous Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation (TPTNS), comprises electrical stimulation at the ankle level, by means of electrodes fixed to the skin. TPTNS is a minimally invasive, easy-to-apply technique that can potentially improve constipation symptoms in the pediatric population by stimulating the sacral nerves. AIM To evaluate the clinical results and applicability of TPTNS as an adjuvant treatment for children and adolescents with functional constipation. METHODS Between April 2019 and October 2021, 36 patients diagnosed with functional constipation according to the Rome IV Criteria were invited to participate in the study. The study followed a single-center, uncontrolled, prospective cohort design. Patients received TPTNS for 4 or 8 weeks, with assessments conducted immediately after the periods of TPTNS and 4 weeks after the end of the intervention period. The data normality distribution was determined by the Shapiro-Wilk test. The Wilcoxon test and Student's t-test for paired samples were used to compare quantitative variables, and the McNemar test was used to compare categorical variables. RESULTS Of the 36 enrolled patients, 28 children and adolescents with intractable function constipation completed the study, receiving TPTNS for 4 weeks. Sixteen patients (57.1%) extended the intervention period for 4 extra weeks, receiving 8 weeks of intervention. TPTNS led to significant improvements in stool consistency, frequency of defecation, and bowel function scores, with a reduction in abdominal pain. Quality of life across physical and psychosocial domains showed substantial enhancements. The quality of life-related to bowel habits also improved significantly, particularly in lifestyle, behavior, and embarrassment domains. The positive effects of this intervention are seen relatively early, detected after 4 weeks of intervention, and even 4 weeks after the end of the intervention. TPTNS was well-tolerated, with an adherence rate of approximately 78%, and no adverse effects were reported. CONCLUSIONS TPTNS is an adjuvant treatment for intractable functional constipation, improving bowel function and quality of life. The effects of TPTNS were observed relatively early and sustained even after treatment cessation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Faecal incontinence is an important complaint reported by patients with Crohn's disease [CD] and it is associated with several disease-related mechanisms, including anorectal functional disorders. This study aimed to assess the anorectal function and clinical characteristics to identify parameters associated with faecal incontinence in CD patients. METHODS This is a cross-sectional study of 104 patients with CD, aged 18 years or older, from a referral centre between August 2019 and May 2021. Patients responded to a specific questionnaire, and underwent medical record review, proctological examination and anorectal functional assessment with anorectal manometry. RESULTS Of the 104 patients, 49% were incontinent. Patients with incontinence had a lower mean resting pressure [43.5 vs 53.1 mmHg; p = 0.038], lower mean squeeze pressure [62.1 vs 94.1 mmHg; p = 0.036] and lower maximum rectal capacity [140 vs 180 mL; p < 0.001]. Faecal incontinence was also associated with disease activity [p < 0.001], loose stools [p = 0.02], perianal disease [p = 0.006], previous anoperineal surgery [p = 0.048] and number of anorectal surgeries [p = 0.036]. CONCLUSIONS This is the largest reported study describing manometric findings of Crohn's disease patients with and without faecal incontinence. Our results identified an association between faecal incontinence and functional disorders, in addition to clinical features in these patients. Functional assessment with anorectal manometry may help choose the best treatment for faecal incontinence in patients with CD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of the present study was to evaluate the long-term efficacy of percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) for patients with faecal incontinence (FI) refractory to conservative treatment. Secondary aims were to identify predictors of response and validate new treatment pathways for partial responders. METHODS A prospective, interventional study was carried out in a specialist defecatory disorder unit from a university hospital between January 2010 and June 2017 on patients > 18 years old with FI refractory to conservative treatment. Thirty-minute PTNS sessions were performed in three phases (weekly, biweekly and monthly) up to a year, with clinical reassessment at 3, 6, 12 and 36 months. Patients were classified as optimal responders when their pretreatment Wexner score decreased > 50%; partial responders when it decreased 25-50%; and insufficient responders if it decreased < 25%. Only optimal and partial responders progressed into successive phases. RESULTS Between 2010 and 2017, 139 patients (110 women, median age 63 years [range 22-82 years]) were recruited. After the first phase, 4 patients were optimal responders, 93 were partial responders and 36 were insufficient responders. At 6 and 12 months, 66 and 89 patients respectively were optimal responders, with an optimal response rate of 64% at the end of treatment. A total of 93.3% patients with a partial response initially finally became optimal responders. Furthermore, at 36 months, 71.9% of patients were still optimal responders without supplementary treatment, although their quality of life did not improve significantly. Baseline Wexner scores ≤ 10 and symptom duration < 1 year were identified as predictive factors for positive responses to PTNS. CONCLUSIONS Patients undergoing PTNS for 1 year following this protocol had optimal long-term responses. PTNS sessions for up to 1 year in patients who were partial responders prevents a high percentage of them from needing more invasive treatments, and maintains long-term continence in patients who were optimal responders.

Abstract
Fecal incontinence is a condition that carries high social stigmatization and a determining factor in the quality of life of the person who suffers from it. Its etiology is multifactorial and treatment includes surgical and conservative measures, including stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve. The aim of this review is to determine whether posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is more effective than other treatments in reducing episodes of fecal incontinence in adults. A systematic review of randomized clinical trials that analyzed different approaches and comparisons with other treatments in adults without neurological or metabolic diseases was carried out, analyzing, fundamentally, the reduction of episodes of fecal incontinence. In general, a reduction in fecal incontinence episodes is observed in the experimental groups compared with the control groups, although these differences are not significant in most studies. The results regarding the effectiveness of PTNS in reducing episodes of fecal incontinence compared to other treatments are not entirely conclusive, although benefits are observed regarding the stimulation of sacral roots. More well-designed studies with a long-term follow-up of the results are needed so that the recommendation of this treatment can be generalized.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The goal of this project was to create an up-to-date joint European clinical practice guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of faecal incontinence (FI), using the best available evidence. These guidelines are intended to help guide all medical professionals treating adult patients with FI (e.g., general practitioners, surgeons, gastroenterologists, other healthcare workers) and any patients who are interested in information regarding the diagnosis and management of FI. METHODS These guidelines have been created in cooperation with members from the United European Gastroenterology (UEG), European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP), European Society of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (ESNM) and the European Society for Primary Care Gastroenterology (ESPCG). These members made up the guideline development group (GDG). Additionally, a patient advisory board (PAB) was created to reflect and comment on the draft guidelines from a patient perspective. Relevant review questions were established by the GDG along with a set of outcomes most important for decision making. A systematic literature search was performed using these review questions and outcomes as a framework. For each predefined review question, the study or studies with the highest level of study design were included. If evidence of a higher-level study design was available, no lower level of evidence was sought or included. Data from the studies were extracted by two reviewers for each predefined important outcome within each review question. Where possible, forest plots were created. After summarising the results for each review question, a systematic quality assessment using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations) approach was performed. For each review question, we assessed the quality of evidence for every predetermined important outcome. After evidence review and quality assessment were completed, recommendations could be formulated. The wording used for each recommendation was dependent on the level of quality of evidence. Lower levels of evidence resulted in weaker recommendations and higher levels of evidence resulted in stronger recommendations. Recommendations were discussed within the GDG to reach consensus. RESULTS These guidelines contain 45 recommendations on the classification, diagnosis and management of FI in adult patients. CONCLUSION These multidisciplinary European guidelines provide an up-to-date comprehensive evidence-based framework with recommendations on the diagnosis and management of adult patients who suffer from FI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Treatment of low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is challenging. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) can improve select bowel disorders. An RCT was conducted to assess the efficacy of PTNS compared with sham stimulation in patients with severe LARS. METHOD This was a multicentre, double-blind RCT. Patients with major LARS score were allocated to receive PTNS or sham therapy (needle placement simulation without nerve stimulation). The study included 16 sessions of 30 min once a week for 12 consecutive weeks, followed by four additional sessions once a fortnight for the following 4 weeks. The primary endpoint was efficacy of PTNS defined by the LARS score 12 months after treatment. Secondary endpoints included faecal incontinence, quality of life (QoL), and sexual function. RESULTS Between September 2016 and July 2018, 46 eligible patients were assigned randomly in a 1 : 1 ratio to PTNS or sham therapy. Baseline characteristics were similar. LARS scores were reduced in both groups, but only patients who received PTNS maintained the effect in the long term (mean(s.d.) score 36.4(3.9) at baseline versus 30.7(11.5) at 12 months; P = 0.018; effect size -5.4, 95 per cent c.i. -9.8 to -1.0), with a mean reduction of 15.7 per cent at 12-month follow-up. The faecal incontinence score was improved after 12 months in the PTNS group (mean(s.d.) score 15.4(5.2) at baseline versus 12.5(6.4) at 12 months; P = 0.018). No major changes in QoL and sexual function were observed in either group. There was no therapy-associated morbidity. Three patients discontinued the study, but none owing to study-related issues. CONCLUSION PTNS has positive effects in some patients with major LARS, especially in those with faecal incontinence. Registration number: NCT02517853 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The results of percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) in the treatment of fecal incontinence (IF) are modest. The aim of the study is to assess the relationship of some technical aspects with the clinical response: location of the nerve, distal response (motor or sensory) and accommodation. METHODS Prospective study of patients with FI undergoing PTNS therapy. The clinical response was assessed using the Wexner scale, defecation diary and anorectal manometry. RESULTS 32 patients were studied. The intensity of localization (proximity to the nerve) was not correlated with clinical or manometric changes. Motor response was associated with a decrease on the Wexner scale [12.12 (±5.39) to 7.71 (±4.57) P < .005], the number of episodes of passive incontinence [8.78 (±9.64) to 4.11 (±7.11) P = .025], the total number of incontinence episodes [16.11 (±16.03) to 7.78 (±11.34) P = .009] and the number of days with fecal soiling [6.89 (±5.53) to 2.56 (±4.13) P = .002] and with an increase in the length of the manometric anal canal at rest [4.55 (±0.596) to 4.95 (±0.213) P = .004]. The increase in stimulation (accommodation) was inversely correlated with the decrease in the Wexner scale (r = -0.677 P < .005) and the number of days with soiling (r = -0.650 P = .022). CONCLUSIONS The motor response during PTNS seems to be related to a better clinical response. The accommodation phenomenon could be associated with worse results. The proximity of the electrode to the nerve does not seem to be important as long as a good distal response is achieved.

Abstract
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Anorectal pain is a symptom with a negative impact on quality of life and it can sometimes develop into a chronic pain syndrome. Structural anorectal pain is treated according to the underlying pathology. In situations of chronic post-surgical pain that is refractory to conventional therapeutic approaches, percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) is an option. PTNS is a neurostimulation technique used in the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction. There has been increasing evidence of its benefits for improving other conditions, such as chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and faecal incontinence (FI). <b><i>Case Presentation:</i></b> We report a case of a 45-year-old woman with chronic post-surgical anorectal pain (CPAP) treated with PTNS. The patient reported a consistent and dramatic decrease in both the frequency and intensity of pain, assessed by the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI). A decrease in the pain interference with mood, normal work, and walking/mobility was also noted, as evaluated by BPI and EQ-5D-3L questionnaires. <b><i>Discussion:</i></b> Neuromodulation treatments have been reported as effective for anorectal pain, but reports on the use of PTNS are rare. The tibial nerve is easily accessible and provides an optimal site for neurostimulation without the need of an operating room or anaesthesia. The overall improvement observed in this case of chronic anorectal pain suggests a potential new area of research for PTNS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anal inserts and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation may be offered to those with fecal incontinence in whom other conservative treatments have failed. OBJECTIVE We aimed to compare anal inserts and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. DESIGN This was an investigator-blinded randomized pilot study. SETTINGS The study was conducted at a large tertiary care hospital. PATIENTS Adult patients with passive or mixed fecal incontinence were recruited. INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomly assigned to receive either the anal inserts or weekly percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation for a period of 3 months. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The primary end point was a 50% reduction of episodes of fecal incontinence per week as calculated by a prospectively completed 2-week bowel diary. Secondary end points were St Mark's incontinence score, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Bowel scores (for bowel pattern, bowel control, and quality of life), use of antidiarrheal agents, estimates of comfort and acceptability. RESULTS Fifty patients were recruited: 25 were randomly assigned to anal inserts and 25 were randomly assigned to percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. All completed treatment. A significant improvement of scores in the 2-week bowel diary, the St Mark's scores and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Bowel scores, was seen in both groups after 3 months of treatment. A reduction of ≥50% fecal incontinence episodes was reached by 76% (n = 19/25) by the anal insert group, compared with 48% (n = 12/25) of those in the percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation group (p = 0.04). The St Mark's fecal incontinence scores and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Bowel scores for bowel pattern, bowel control, and quality of life (p = 0.01) suggest similar improvement for each group. LIMITATIONS A realistic sample size calculation could not be performed because of the paucity of objective prospective studies assessing the effect of the insert device and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. CONCLUSIONS Both anal insert and percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation improved the symptoms of fecal incontinence after 3 months of treatment. The insert device appeared to be more effective than percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. Larger studies are needed to investigate this further. See Video Abstract at http://links.lww.com/DCR/B460. ESTUDIO PILOTO ALEATORIZADO DE INSERCIONES ANALES CONTRA LA ESTIMULACIN PERCUTNEA DEL NERVIO TIBIAL EN PACIENTES CON INCONTINENCIA FECAL ANTECEDENTES:Las inserciones anales y la estimulación percutánea del nervio tibial (PTNS) se pueden ofrecer a las personas con incontinencia fecal que han fallado en otros tratamientos conservadores.OBJETIVO:Nuestro objetivo fue comparar inserciones anales y estimulación percutánea del nervio tibial.DISEÑO:Este fue un estudio piloto aleatorio ciego para investigadores.AJUSTE:El estudio se realizó en un hospital de atención terciaria.PACIENTES:Se reclutaron pacientes adultos con incontinencia fecal pasiva o mixta.INTERVENCIONES:Los pacientes fueron asignados al azar para recibir inserciones anales o estimulación del nervio tibial percutáneo semanal durante un período de tres meses.PRINCIPALES MEDIDAS DE RESULTADO:El principal resultado fue una reducción del 50% de los episodios de incontinencia fecal por semana, según lo calculado mediante un diario intestinal de dos semanas completado de forma prospectiva. Se observó una mejora significativa de las puntuaciones en el diario intestinal de dos semanas, la puntuación de St Mark y la puntuación del ICIQ-B en ambos grupos después de 3 meses de tratamiento. Se alcanzó una reducción de ≥ 50% de los episodios de incontinencia fecal en un 76% (n = 19/25) en el grupo de inserción anal, en comparación con el 48% (n = 12/25) de los del grupo de estimulación percutánea del nervio tibial (p = 0,04). Abstract
INTRODUCTION The results of percutaneous posterior tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS) in the treatment of fecal incontinence (IF) are modest. The aim of the study is to assess the relationship of some technical aspects with the clinical response: location of the nerve, distal response (motor or sensory) and accommodation. METHODS Prospective study of patients with FI undergoing PTNS therapy. The clinical response was assessed using the Wexner scale, defecation diary and anorectal manometry. RESULTS 32 patients were studied. The intensity of localization (proximity to the nerve) was not correlated with clinical or manometric changes. Motor response was associated with a decrease on the Wexner scale [12.12 (± 5.39) to 7.71 (± 4.57) p < 0.005], the number of episodes of passive incontinence [8.78 (± 9.64) to 4.11 (± 7.11) p = 0.025], the total number of incontinence episodes [16.11 (± 16.03) to 7.78 (± 11.34) p = 0.009] and the number of days with faecal soiling [6.89 (± 5.53) to 2.56 (± 4.13) p = 0.002] and with an increase in the length of the manometric anal canal at rest [4.55 (± 0.596) to 4.95 (± 0.213) p = 0.004]. The increase in stimulation (accommodation) was inversely correlated with the decrease in the Wexner scale (r = -0.677 p < 0.005) and the number of days with soiling (r = -0.650 p = 0.022). CONCLUSIONS The motor response during PTNS seems to be related to a better clinical response. The accommodation phenomenon could be associated with worse results. The proximity of the electrode to the nerve does not seem to be important as long as a good distal response is achieved.

Abstract
Fecal incontinence often is underreported and can be associated with both social embarrassment and isolation. As patients often do not proactively discuss their symptoms, healthcare providers should screen for this distressing condition. The cause of fecal incontinence often is multifactorial, so no single therapy can guarantee perfect, risk-free outcomes. This article reviews the limited therapies for managing fecal incontinence, including a minimally invasive vaginal control device that may offer hope for managing fecal incontinence in women.
