Estimating the Esophagus Cancer Incidence Rate in Ardabil, Iran: A Capture-Recapture Method

Depth Analysis of Open Transhiatal Esophagectomy Outcomes (Orringer Technique) in Patients with Esophageal Cancer from 1990 to 2015: A 25-year Experience Single-center Study

: Esophageal cancer is an invasive tumor with rapid growth and a poor prognosis. The annual incidence of esophageal cancer in the United States is 6 per 100 000 men and 1.6 per 100 000 women. This is different in the case of Iran, and the number of patients in the country is higher than in other countries. In this evaluation, the researchers present the experience with open Transhiatal Esophagectomy (Orringer) technique outcomes. This study aimed at evaluating the Orringer technique and its complications in patients with esophageal cancer for 25 years at the Cancer Research Center of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. This is a descriptive study conducted from the beginning of 1988 to 2016. In this study, 114 patients with a mean age of 55 years and a gender classification of 60% male and 40% female were evaluated. The present study and other experiences showed that non-radical surgery such as the Orringer technique is acceptable and compassable compared to radical surgery in 3 fields.

Cancer incidence in the East Azerbaijan province of Iran in 2015-2016: results of a population-based cancer registry

Background

Few countries in the Middle East have a population-based cancer registry, despite a clear need for accurate cancer statistics in this region. We therefore established a registry in the East Azerbaijan province, the sixth largest province in northwestern Iran.

Methods

We actively collected data from 20 counties, 62 cities, and 44 districts for the period between 20^th March 2015 and 19^th March 2016 (one Iranian solar year). The CanReg5 software was then used to estimate age-standardized incidence rates (ASRs) per 100,000 for all cancers and different cancer types.

Results

Data for 11,536 patients were identified, but we only analyzed data for 6655 cases after removing duplicates and non-residents. The ASR for all cancers, except non-melanoma skin cancer, was 167.1 per 100,000 males and 125.7 per 100,000 females. The most common cancers in men were stomach (ASR 29.7), colorectal (ASR 18.2), bladder (ASR 17.6), prostate (ASR 17.3), and lung (ASR 15.4) cancers; in women, they were breast (ASR 31.1), colorectal (ASR 13.7), stomach (13.3), thyroid (ASR 7.8), and esophageal (ASR 7.1) cancers. Both the death certificate rate (19.5%) and the microscopic verification rate (65%) indicated that the data for the cancer registry were of reasonable quality.

Conclusion

The results of the East Azerbaijan Population-based Cancer Registry show a high incidence of cancer in this province, especially gastrointestinal cancers.

Incidence and Mortality of Various Cancers in Iran and Compare to Other Countries: A Review Article

BACKGROUND

Iran in recent years had the rapid development of industrialization and modernity, and changes in the people's lifestyles and environment, these changes may affect epidemiological patterns of various types of cancers. In this review, incidence and mortality of various cancers (skin, gastric, esophageal, breast, and prostate) in Iran have been reported.

METHODS

The related data about Iran and other countries were collected from databases such as Google Scholar, Scopus, PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science. All included studies were published before Jun 2017.

RESULTS

There is an increment trend of incidence and mortality rate for most cancers in Iran.

CONCLUSION

The plan for control and prevention of cancers must be a high priority for health policy in Iran as well as it is suggested that earlier screening is need for high-risk population.

Assessment of a Leishmaniasis Reporting System in Tropical Bolivia Using the Capture-Recapture Method

This study evaluates the level of underreporting of the National Program of Leishmaniasis Control (NPLC) in two communities of Cochabamba, Bolivia during the period 2013-2014. Montenegro skin test-confirmed cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) were identified through active surveillance during medical campaigns. These cases were compared with those registered in the NPLC by passive surveillance. After matching and cleaning data from the two sources, the total number of cases and the level of underreporting of the National Program were calculated using the capture-recapture analysis. This estimated that 86 cases of CL (95% confidence interval [CI]: 62.1-110.8) occurred in the study period in both communities. The level of underreporting of the NPLC in these communities was very high: 73.4% (95% CI: 63.1-81.5%). These results can be explained by the inaccessibility of health services and centralization of the NPLC activities. This information is important to establish priorities among policy-makers and funding organizations as well as implementing adequate intervention plans.
