Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of web-based education on the anxiety and quality of life of patients who were hospitalized and underwent breast surgery (modified radical mastectomy or breast-conserving surgery) with axilla lymph node dissection. The patients were divided into three groups by the block randomization method as follows: web-based education group, brochure group, and control group (total N = 75). To obtain the study data, the Risk Factors for Breast Cancer and Data Collection Form for the Disease, SF 36 Quality of Life Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Website Usability Scale were used. The learning content was patient education associated with the pre-operative and post-operative periods. The differences in the state of anxiety scores 1 day before surgery, the 2nd day after surgery, and 1 month after surgery were statistically lower in the web-based education group than in the other two groups. The mean difference in the trait anxiety scores after 1 month was higher in the control group than in the other two groups. Web-based patient education was identified as a more effective method than the brochure and control groups in terms of patients' physical and emotional well-being, vitality/fatigue, and role limitations emotional and general health perception. Web-based patient education is effective in decreasing the anxiety of patients and improving their quality of life.

Chu TL, Wang J, Lin HL, Lee HF, Lin CT, Chieh LY, Sung YC, Lin YE. Multimedia-assisted instruction on pain assessment learning of new nurses: a quasi-experimental study. BMC MEDICAL EDUCATION 2019; 19:68. [PMID: 30832632 PMCID: PMC6398238 DOI: 10.1186/s12909-019-1496-z] [Citation(s) in RCA: 4] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 08/02/2018] [Accepted: 02/14/2019] [Indexed: 05/11/2023]
Abstract
BACKGROUND Pain assessment and treatment are key factors affecting the quality and safety of care for patients and capabilities related to them are crucial for new nursing staff. Consequently, we developed a multimedia-assisted teaching program for nursing newcomers' pain assessment learning to facilitate their practical pain assessment ability. The goal of this study was to evaluate a multimedia instructional program to boost new nurses' ability to conduct pain assessment and treatment, through simulated scenario instruction. METHODS A quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design with purposive sampling was used in this study. Eighty-six nurses were enrolled (control group, n = 39; experimental group, n = 47). Both groups underwent traditional pain assessment training in the classroom. The control group received lectures using PowerPoint files; while the experimental group undertook pain assessment training with the same content but delivered via multimedia-assisted instruction based on the ADDIE model. Pre- and post-instruction questionnaires relating to pain knowledge were completed. Participants' competence in performing pain assessment was subsequently evaluated one-month post instruction. RESULTS The experimental group had significantly higher satisfaction scores (27.67 ± 3.76 vs. 31.36 ± 3.42, p < .01, respectively), and demonstrated greater knowledge of pain assessment (7.73 ± 0.67 vs. 7.08 ± 0.90, p < .05, respectively) than did the control group. Additionally, when evaluated at the one month follow-up, newcomers in the experimental group had better communication ability to perform pain assessment (26.58 ± 3.01 vs. 25.08 ± 3.32, p < .05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The program can improve nurses' pain assessment knowledge and competence. Newcomers were able to better respond to patients in pain, which is essential for pain assessment. This pilot study thus suggests a new, multimedia program for training nursing newcomers in pain assessment.

Baraz S, Zarea K, Shahbazian HB. Impact of the self-care education program on quality of life in patients with type II diabetes. Diabetes Metab Syndr 2017; 11 Suppl 2:S1065-S1068. [PMID: 28803720 DOI: 10.1016/j.dsx.2017.07.043] [Citation(s) in RCA: 9] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Submit a Manuscript] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/23/2017] [Accepted: 07/30/2017] [Indexed: 11/27/2022]
Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diabetes is an irreversible disease requiring lifetime self-care and rehabilitation. Patient education to improve their ability in administering self-care is also effective, lowering the risks of developing complications and promoting the quality of life. This study was conducted to assess the effect of self-care educational programs in promoting the quality of life of diabetic patients. METHODS In this pre-test/post-test intervention study design, 30 diabetes patients were included on the basis of a non-randomized sampling, using each subject as her/his own control. The self-care educational program was introduced to participants by researcher through two 55-min sessions. Quality of life by using Iranian Short Form Health Survey was assessed before and after the educational sessions. The paired t-test was used to compare the total and subscale mean scores of the Quality of life before and after the training. RESULTS Finding showed that there was a significant increase in General health (P=0.027), Physical role (P<0.001), Physical functioning (P=0.027), Social functioning (P=0.029) and Body pain (P=0.020). CONCLUSION The results from the present study demonstrate that structured patient education improves patients 'well-being' after the teaching program. Diabetes educational program should be a basis for the management of diabetes.
