Aesthetics in Nursing Practice as Experienced by Children During Hospitalization in Philippines: A Phenomenological Study

This study aimed to describe the meaning of aesthetics in nursing practice as experienced by children during hospitalization. A hermeneutic phenomenological approach was used. Fifteen children who met the inclusion criteria participated in the study conducted from June to August 2021. Data were collected by drawing and interviewing. Kongsuwan's approach was used to analyze the data. Six thematic categories that revealed aesthetics in nursing practice were identified, namely, Enjoyment; Kindness; Creating impressive care; Appreciation of safeness; Intention to know children; and Connecting to others. The study findings present useful knowledge to inform nurses regarding special approaches to implementing aesthetic nursing care for children.

The effectiveness of aesthetic care training on nurses' perceptions of end-of-life care in patients with cancer: a quasi-experimental study

BACKGROUND

Supportive end-of-life care plays a significant role for patients with cancer. Significantly, art and aesthetics in nursing are regarded as key components of nursing practice. They may contribute to supportive end-of-life care that nurses provide for patients with cancer. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of aesthetic care training on nurses' perceptions of end-of-life care in patients with cancer.

METHODS

A quasi-experimental study was conducted with two groups of nurses working in the oncology wards of two hospitals in Kerman, Iran. A sample consisting of 100 nurses was selected by census and randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 49) and a control group (n = 51). The experimental group received educational workshops on aesthetic care over four weekly-held 90-minute sessions. Both groups completed the Oncology Nurses' Perceptions of End-Of-Life Care (ONPEoLC) Scale before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention. The data were analyzed with SPSS software version 21 using t-test, Chi-square, and repeated measures ANOVA. The significance level was set to p < 0.05.

RESULTS

The mean baseline scores on the ONPEoLC Scale were 163.08 ± 13.58 in the experimental group and 163.27 ± 14.57 in the control group. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05). Post-intervention mean scores in the experimental and control groups were 187.1 ± 18.22 and 159.11 ± 22.11, respectively, indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.001). One month after the intervention, the experimental and control groups' mean scores were 190.89 ± 11.13 and 165.80 ± 11.69, respectively, with a significant difference between the groups (P = 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Based on the results of the present study, designing aesthetic care educational programs is an effective way to improve nurses' understanding of end-of-life care. Therefore, it is recommended that nursing faculties and educational policymakers utilize aesthetic care training to improve the nurses' perceptions of end-of-life care.

The Living Experience of Patients with Burn Injuries from Art Nursing Care: An Unspoken Mystery

Background

Although art and aesthetics are important aspects in nursing care, there is scarcity of literature regarding this area, particularly in relation to patient expectations of art nursing care. This study aims to explore the perceptions of patients with burn injuries regarding art nursing care.

Materials and Methods

The present phenomenological study was conducted on 14 patients with burn injuries based on convenience and purposive sampling. Data were collected through deep open-ended and semi-structured interview. Data analysis was performed based on van Manen's Hermeneutic Phenomenology.

Results

Patients' experience of art nursing care emerged in the form of three main themes, including "being a healer for patients' wounds", "skilled and specialized care", "praiseworthy care", and six subthemes.

Conclusions

The patients in the burn unit demonstrated an understanding and appreciation for the qualities of patience, hard work, compassion, and love that the nurses possess. They also noted the meticulous attention paid by the nurses to their needs, which exemplifies the purest human traits and professional characteristics in patient care and can be seen as an art form in nursing.

A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Study of Aesthetics in Nursing Practice Among Hospitalized Cancer Patients in Nepal

Background: Aesthetics is the art of nursing that is expressive, subjective, and visible in the act of caring in nursing practice. Aesthetics in nursing practice satisfies holistic needs and achieves the quality of whole-person care. Purpose: The aim of this study is to describe the meanings of the lived experiences of cancer patients in terms of receiving care from the perspective of aesthetics in nursing practice. Methods: The hermeneutic phenomenological approach grounded on Gadamerian philosophy guided this study. Eleven Nepalese cancer patients who met the inclusion criteria shared their experiences through graphic illustrations (drawings) and interviews. Data were analyzed and interpreted following van Manen's phenomenological approach reflective of the four life worlds. The trustworthiness of findings was established following the criteria by Lincoln and Guba. Results: Thematic categories of the lived experience of cancer patients were revealed, reflecting the four life worlds: lived relation expressed as being nurtured as a family; lived space as appreciating the healing space; lived time as being hopeful; and lived body as receiving a new life. This experience was described as experiencing self and other while appreciating the healing space, being hopeful and nurtured as family and having a new life Implications for Practice: Aesthetics in nursing practice values on politely nurturing cancer patients as nurses' family members in a pleasant healing environment. Further, cancer patients experience having a new life.

Aesthetics in nursing practice as experienced by nurses in Indonesia: A phenomenological study

Background

While aesthetics in nursing practice brings out the beauty in nursing, studies regarding how aesthetics are implemented in practice are lacking.

Objective

To describe the meanings of aesthetics in nursing practice experienced by nurses in Indonesia.

Methods

This qualitative study employed a hermeneutic phenomenological approach based on Gadamerian philosophy. Thirteen nurses were asked to reflect on their experiences of providing aesthetics in their practice through drawing, followed by individual face-to-face interviews. Data were collected in a public hospital in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The interview transcripts and the pictures were analysed following van Manen's approach.

Results

Five thematic categories were revealed: 1) Engaging in caring for persons; 2) Full of compassion; 3) Sympathetic place of care; 4) A joyful time of care; and 5) Distracting the inconvenience in care.

Conclusion

Aesthetics in nursing practice is understood and experienced by Indonesian nurses in various ways, not only limited to the visual beauty, cleanness or tidiness of nursing intervention, but are expressed in other ways within caring, including providing care with compassion, applying the art of communication, relieving the pain, and applying innovation in care. These findings can be used to inform nurses in practising aesthetic nursing for enhancing the quality of care.

“Estableciendo vínculos dialógicos que alivian”: una mirada desde el patrón estético

Introducción: La enfermedad cardiovascular es la segunda causa de morbimortalidad en el mundo, genera carga social y económica. La falta de adherencia a los medicamentos cardiovasculares está asociada con múltiples riesgos. Objetivo: Describir la categoría: Estableciendo vínculos dialógicos que alivian desde el patrón estético Materiales y Métodos: Investigación cualitativa con enfoque en la teoría fundamentada basado en Corbin y Strauss. Participaron 12 personas, la recolección de la información fue la entrevista en profundidad. En el análisis se codifico, línea por línea los textos, se etiquetaron códigos, que dieron origen a las subcategorías y categorías, luego se direccionó a examinar los datos de forma teórica, se integró y refinó la categoría. Resultados: Estableciendo vínculos dialógicos que alivian, compuesta por las subcategorías: Experimentado clima de afecto y confianza para el aprendizaje: creando empatía; Estableciendo conexiones de cuidado que dan satisfacción y construyendo sentimientos positivos del encuentro dialógico. Discusión: El establecimiento de vínculos dialógicos que alivian hace parte del conocimiento estético, uno de los patrones de conocimiento identificados por Carper, descrito como "arte de la enfermería”. Se caracteriza por ser intangible, y no va más allá del contexto de la experiencia personal de cada individuo. Conclusiones: El vínculo dialógico que alivia, es un encuentro genuino que permite interacción creativa enfermera-paciente. Este se experimenta a través de palabras y gestos que expanden la conciencia del ser humano que vive la experiencia de la enfermedad coronaria y requiere de tratamiento de uso crónico para mantener su control. Reorienting Esthetic Knowing as an Appropriate "Object" of Scientific Inquiry to Advance Understanding of a Critical Pattern of Nursing Knowledge in Practice

The esthetic pattern of knowing is critical for nursing practice, yet remains weakly defined and understood. This gap has arguably relegated esthetic knowing to an "ineffable" creativity that resists transparency and understanding, which is a barrier to articulating its value for nursing and its importance in producing beneficial health outcomes. Current philosophy of science developments are synthesized to argue that esthetic knowing is an appropriate "object" of scientific inquiry. Examples of empirical scholarship that can be conceived as scientific inquiry into manifestations of esthetic knowing are highlighted. A program of research is outlined to advance a science of esthetic knowing.
