Awareness of the Importance of and Adherence to Patients' Rights Among Physicians and Nurses in Oman: An analytical cross-sectional study across different levels of healthcare

The justification and practice of the patient rights charter from the perspective of patients admitted to surgical wards during COVID-19 pandemic: evidence from Southern Iran

BACKGROUND

Hospitals, as one of the core elements of healthcare service delivery, should pave the way for more efficient compliance with the Patient Rights Charter (PRC). The COVID-19 pandemic affected the interactions between healthcare providers and patients. The present study aimed to investigate the importance and practice of PRC from the perspective of hospitalized patients in surgical wards during the COVID-19 pandemic.

METHODS

The participants in this cross-sectional study were 355 patients who underwent surgery at Imam Khomeini Hospital in southern Kerman, Iran, in 2021. Data was collected by convenience sampling. The data in this study were collected using Justification and Practice of Patient Rights (JPPR). Data analysis was performed with SPSS-16 software using the Kruskal-Wallis, Wilcoxon, and Spearman correlation tests.

RESULTS

The total mean score for the justification of patient rights (PR) was 69.12 ± 58.44, which was significantly higher than the total mean score of PR practice (61.02 ± 1.32) (p < 0.001). In addition, the mean scores for all PR justification dimensions were significantly higher than the mean scores for PR practice (p < 0.05). A comparison of the dimensions of the PR justification showed service facilitation had the highest score and handling patient complaints had the lowest score. Furthermore, an analysis of the dimensions of PR practice indicated that handling patient complaints had the lowest score and other dimensions had the same score.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study showed that despite the great importance of PR from the patients' perspective, PR is not still practiced optimally. The findings from this study can have some clinical implications and help hospital managers to take measures to better adapt to the PRC with staff training and developing a strong policy to comply with the PRC, especially by paving the way for handling patient complaints.

Respecting patients' rights in hospitals: patients' and health-care workers' perspectives

Considering the importance of respecting and observing patients' rights, this study aimed to assess the level of observance of hospitalized patients' rights from both patients' and health-care workers' (HCWs) perspectives. This cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study reports the responses of 486 patients and 887 HCWs in a public referral university hospital. The study illustrates that patients and HCWs think patients' rights are respected at a medium level; however, HCWs reported lower levels of respect for patients' rights than patients, and senior HCWs reported even lower levels than their younger colleagues. Older patients and those hospitalized in internal medicine wards reported lower respect for autonomy and responsiveness, and patients' companions reported lower levels of respect for patients' rights than the patients themselves.

Core competencies of healthcare professionals in Oman: Research and evidence-based practice needs attention

AIM

The aim of the study was to examine (1) the perceptions on core competencies of healthcare professionals working at clinical settings in Oman and (2) which demographic characteristics explain the overall core competency.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional design.

METHODS

Healthcare Professional Core Competency Instrument, consisting of 11 sub-scales with 81 items, was distributed to healthcare professionals (n = 1,543; 826 nurses and 717 physicians) who worked at primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare institutions. Descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and linear regression were used for data analysis.

RESULTS

Altogether 1,078 healthcare professionals (628 nurses and 450 physicians) responded representing 70% overall response rate. Healthcare professionals perceived their overall core competence as excellent, safety being the highest, and research and evidence-based practice was the lowest. The multiple linear regression analysis revealed that ethnicity, gender and years of working experience were the characters that explained the overall core competence, where expatriate senior professionals reported higher competency levels compared with counterparts.

Personalized Healthcare: The Importance of Patients' Rights in Clinical Practice from the Perspective of Nursing Students in Poland, Spain and Slovakia-A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: This study aimed to define the role and importance of patients’ rights in personalized healthcare from the perspective of nursing students in Poland, Spain and Slovakia. Methods: The research was carried out by means of a diagnostic survey, using the survey technique, with the participation of 1002 nursing students attending a full-time undergraduate study program at three European countries. The “Patients’ rights” questionnaire was used as a research tool. The average age of students was 21.6 years (±3.4). The empirical material collected was subjected to a statistical analysis. Results: The study demonstrated that 72.1% of nursing students from Spain, 51.2% from Poland and 38.5% from Slovakia believe that patients’ rights are respected at a good level in their country. Significant intergroup differences (F = 67.43; p < 0.0001) were observed in the self-assessment of students’ knowledge of patients’ rights. The highest average values were obtained by students from Spain (3.54 ± 0.92), while 35.9% of students from Slovakia and 25.5% from Poland were quite critical and pointed to their low level of knowledge of patients’ rights in their self-assessment. When ranking patients’ rights related to respecting dignity, students from Spain obtained much higher average values (4.37 ± 0.92) than students from the other two countries. Conclusions: The level of students’ knowledge of patients’ rights and the respect for patients’ rights by medical personnel is, in the opinion of the respondents, quite diverse and requires in-depth educational activities among nursing students at the university level in respective countries.

Observance of patients' rights by physicians and nurses from the COVID-19 patients' perspective

Observance of patients' rights is a significant indicator in evaluating the quality of healthcare services. The COVID-19 pandemic has become a global crisis and affected the interactions between healthcare providers and patients. This study examined the COVID-19 patients’ viewpoint about the observance of their rights by physicians and nurses. This study is a descriptive cross-sectional work of research conducted on the COVID-19 patients in Zanjan Province, Iran, in September 2020. The subjects were selected through convenience sampling, and data was collected using a two-section questionnaire consisting of a demographic characteristics survey and a Likert-type scale for evaluating patients' rights observance. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire were found to be acceptable, and the collected data was analyzed in SPSS v.26 using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, and ANOVA test.

The mean score of observance of patients' rights was 69.60±7.36, representing a moderate level. The highest and lowest scores for the observance of patients' rights were related to the dimensions of courteous communication and responsibility, respectively. A significant relationship was found between the observance of patients’ rights and their marital status, health insurance, and education level (P<0.05). This study showed that the observance of the COVID-19 patients' rights has not been affected by the social agitation caused by this disease.
