The relationship of sociocultural beliefs and infertile couples' attitude toward reproductive donation: A descriptive-correlational study

Experiences of Mothers Receiving Donated Embryos

Background

The efficacy of Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ARTs) or technologies used to treat infertile couples has been approved. One such technique is embryo donation. However, there is insufficient knowledge of the experiences of mothers receiving donated embryos. Thus, the present study was conducted with the aim to determine the experiences of mothers receiving donated embryos.

Materials and Methods

This qualitative conventional content analysis study was conducted in 2018 for 8 months (from February to September). The research setting was Royan Institute. Mothers receiving donated embryos were selected from among those who were pregnant or were at the postpartum stage using the purposive sampling method. A total of 15 interviews were performed with 13 participants. The qualitative data were collected using deep unstructured interviews and analyzed using the Graneheim and Lundman (2004) method in (version 10; VERBI GmbH, Berlin, Germany) software.

Results

Data analysis resulted in 412 open codes that were then categorized into 7 main categories and their subcategories. The main categories were as follows: sociocultural constraint, feeling of insecurity in personal and family identity, protection of personal and family identity, confounded support, pressure and hardship, and achieving relative tranquility.

Conclusions

The results of this study showed that the mothers who underwent embryo donation experienced feelings of insecurity regarding both individual and family identities, were confronted with sociocultural difficulties, and faced various pressures. It is suggested that future care plans be focused on the identity crisis of these families and the children resulting from these methods, and that future plans balance the socioeconomic pressures resulting from the use of these methods.

Women's needs in their journey towards motherhood via oocyte donation: A mixed methods systematic review

BACKGROUND

Given the significant changes in family formation through donation procedures, providing an optimal level of care that is responsive to the needs of mothers who get pregnant via oocyte donation is pivotal to improve their maternal role. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the needs of oocyte donation mothers to address their specific needs.

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to review the needs of women in their journey towards motherhood via oocyte donation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this systematic review, which followed the updated Joanna Briggs Institute's methodological guidance for conducting a mixed methods systematic review, the quantitative observational and qualitative studies were searched through databases including PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, the Cochran Library, and Google Scholar search engine. Letters to the editor, commentaries, magazine articles, articles without full text and abstracts presented in congresses were excluded. All English-language articles related to the needs of oocyte donation mothers, without time limitation, were reviewed. The eligible studies were critically appraised independently by 2 researchers.

RESULTS

4649 records were identified from those 18 articles were finally included in the review. The needs of oocyte donation mothers comprised 8 categories: The need for special services in fertility clinics, the need to improve the quality of care, the need for emotional support and psychological consultation, information needs, the need for financial support, the need for disclosure counseling, educational needs, and the need for sociocultural and religious support.

CONCLUSION

This review suggests various needs of oocyte donation mothers. The results can be used in carefully planning supportive programs for this vulnerable population.

Complementary and alternative medicine use in infertility: A review of infertile women's needs

The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is common in infertile women in different countries. The purpose of the current study was to review the infertile women's needs in relation to CAM use. This narrative review was conducted through searching English databases including Scopus, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane library as well as Persian databases consisted of SID, and Magiran. The used keywords included "CAM/therapy, needs, and Infertility." All studies published in English peer-reviewed journals from conception to October 2020, which examined the infertile women's needs in the field of CAM use were included in the review. In the process of data extraction, two researchers screened the title, abstract, and full text of the articles. Out of the 2166 articles reviewed, 29 articles including six qualitative and mixed methods studies, four review, and 19 quantitative studies met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that infertile women have different needs in six domains consisted of educational and informational needs, the need for psychological counseling, supportive needs, the need for CAM use counseling, the need to treatment consistent with women's culture and demands, and the need to the integration of CAM with conventional medicine. Awareness of infertile women's needs toward CAM use can help health policymakers and planners in designing and implementing counseling services in accordance with the demands and culture of infertile couples. It also helps to develop a coherent program to integrate the use of CAM in the classical infertility treatment.

The factors affecting male infertility: A systematic review

Background

In recent years, the incidence of male infertility has increased worldwide. It is necessary to study the factors that influence male infertility in each area/region for better management.

Objective

To determine the factors affecting male infertility in the Iranian male population.

Materials and Methods

An online search was conducted in electronic databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, SID, and Scopus to identify articles on the factors associated with male infertility, published in English and Persian. The keywords used to perform the search included "factor", "epidemiology", "causes of infertility", and "male infertility". The search was conducted without a time restriction, up to April 2020.

Results

The search resulted in a total number of 691 studies. After an assessment of the articles, finally 14 studies were included in this study with a total number of 26,324 infertile males. The factors associated with male infertility included semen abnormalities, varicocele and testis disorder, smoking, exposure to heat, obesity, anabolic steroids, vascular abnormalities, anti-spermatogenesis factors, antidepressants, taking ranitidine and cimetidine, penile discharge and genital ulcers, painful micturition, occupational factors, alcohol, chronic disease, sexual disorder, Surgical and urological diseases, genetic factors and herpes infection. Among these, the semen and varicocele disorders were common in most studies.

Conclusion

The present review suggests that the factors affecting male infertility in Iran are similar to those reported from other countries. The results of this study can be used in adopting appropriate strategies for infertility management in Iran.
