Herbivore impacts on marsh production depend upon a compensatory continuum mediated by salinity stress

Plant communities are disturbed by several stressors and they are expected to be further impacted by increasing anthropogenic stress. The consequences of these stressors will depend, in part, upon the ability of plants to compensate for herbivory. Previous studies found that herbivore impacts on plants can vary from negative to positive because of environmental control of plant compensatory responses, a.k.a. the Compensatory Continuum Hypothesis. While these influential studies enhanced our appreciation of the dynamic nature of plant-herbivore interactions, they largely focused on the impact of resource limitation. This bias limits our ability to predict how other environmental factors will shape the impact of herbivory. We examined the role of salinity stress on herbivory of salt marsh cordgrass, Spartina foliosa, by an herbivore previously hypothesized to influence the success of restoration projects (the scale insect, Haliaspis spartinae). Using a combination of field and mesocosm manipulations of scales and salinity, we measured how these factors affected Spartina growth and timing of senescence. In mesocosm studies, Spartina overcompensated for herbivory by growing taller shoots at low salinities but the impact of scales on plants switched from positive to neutral with increasing salinity stress. In field studies of intermediate salinities, scales reduced Spartina growth and increased the rate of senescence. Experimental salinity additions at this field site returned the impact of scales to neutral. Because salinity decreased scale densities, the switch in impact of scales on Spartina with increasing salinity was not simply a linear function of scale abundance. Thus, the impact of scales on primary production depended strongly upon environmental context because intermediate salinity stress prevented plant compensatory responses to herbivory. Understanding this context-dependency will be required if we are going to successfully predict the success of restoration efforts and the ecological consequences of anthropogenic disturbances.

Vertical distribution of nitrifying populations in bacterial biofilms from a full-scale nitrifying trickling filter

Cryosectioned biofilm from three depths (0.5, 3.0 and 6.0 m) in a full-scale nitrifying trickling filter (NTF) were studied using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). A large number of sections were used to determine how the biofilm thickness, structure and community composition varied with depth along the ammonium concentration gradient in the NTF, and how the ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were distributed vertically within the biofilm. Both the biofilm thickness and relative biomass content of the biofilm decreased with depth, along with structural differences such as void size and surface roughness. Four AOB populations were found, with two Nitrosomonas oligotropha populations dominating at all depths. A smaller population of Nitrosomonas europaea was present only at 0.5 m, while a population of Nitrosomonas communis increased with depth. The two N. oligotropha populations showed different vertical distribution patterns within the biofilm, indicating different ecophysiologies even though they belong to the same AOB lineage. All NOB were identified as Nitrospira sp., and were generally more associated with the biofilm base than the surface-associated dominating AOB population. Additionally, a small population of anaerobic ammonia-oxidizers was found at 6.0 m, even though the biofilm was well aerated.

BOTTOM-UP AND TOP-DOWN EFFECTS ON INSECT HERBIVORES DO NOT VARY AMONG SITES OF DIFFERENT SALINITY

It has been suggested, but rarely tested, that the relative strength of top-down and bottom-up factors in communities varies along an environmental stress gradient. We compared the strength of bottom-up and top-down effects on the densities of insect herbivores along a range of sites of different salinities in west-central Florida. We used a 2 x 2 factorial design with plots divided into four treatments: (1) bottom-up manipulation, where fertilizer was applied to increase plant quality; (2) top-down manipulation, where sticky traps were used to reduce the effects of natural enemies (parasitoids); (3) bottom-up and top-down manipulation, where fertilizer was applied and sticky traps were used; and (4) control plots. These plots were established along a range of salinities among seven different sites containing the salt marsh plant Borrichia frutescens. In each plot, we determined the parasitism levels and abundances of the sap sucker Pissonotus quadripustulatus, the gall maker Asphondylia borrichiae, and the lepidopteran stem borer Argyresthia spp. Gall density, Pissonotus density, and stem borer density were significantly higher in lower salinity sites, suggesting a strong effect of environmental stress. There was a significant increase of galls and Pissonotus and a marginally significant increase of bored stems on fertilized plots but not on trapped plots. There was a significant interaction of site and fertilizer on gall parasitism. There were no interactions of either treatment with salinity on herbivore densities. The general lack of interaction between salinity level and other treatments on herbivore densities contrasts with our previous result where treatment effects did vary with salinity level on a large experimentally generated salinity gradient at one site. Thus, the results of the present paper suggest that, while environmental stress can modify top-down and bottom-up effects on herbivores at single sites, variation in site-to-site factors, possibly including clonal identity of plant, affects herbivore densities so much as to swamp out any observable interaction between environmental stress and top-down or bottom-up factors.
