Abstract
Background Women of Somali background in Norway have a high prevalence of overweight and obesity, compared with women in the general Norwegian population. For lifestyle interventions to be applicable for immigrants to Norway, it is important to culturally tailor interventions in collaboration with relevant communities. The primary outcome was a difference in weight change between the intervention and control groups. Methods In this interventional study, Somali women living in one borough of Oslo Municipality in Norway with body mass index (BMI) ≥27.0 kg.m-2 received a co-created, culturally tailored 12-month weight loss intervention consisting of 24 interactive sessions during the first three months, and monthly sessions for the next nine months, compared to a control group. Both groups were measured at baseline and 12 months. Results A total of 169 participants were recruited, and 101 participants completed the follow-up. After multiple imputation, the mean difference in weight change adjusted for baseline weight, age, education, employment, marital status, number of children in the household and length of Norwegian residency was -1.6 kg (95 % CI -3.57, 0.43, p = 0.12) in the intervention compared to the control group. Conclusion This culturally tailored intervention study demonstrated a modest non-significant effect on weight change after 12 months, possibly due to the short intervention duration and COVID-19. Further studies of a longer duration and considering the provision of childcare are needed to understand whether this approach can be transferred to other immigrant groups and genders.Trial registration: The study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov NCT04578067, 2020-09-29.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies suggest an increased prevalence of diet-related chronic diseases among African immigrants with increased length of stay in the U.S. The objective of the current study is to understand the dietary practices and perceptions of recent African immigrant families. DESIGN Focus group sessions were conducted with Nigerian and Congolese immigrant parents residing in Illinois. Participants were recruited using convenience sampling methods and focus group sessions were conducted via videoconference. Participants discussed dietary practices, meal preparation, and family mealtimes for their families. They also discussed experiences with eating different kinds of foods since arrival in the U.S. Verbatim transcription of focus group sessions were completed and deductive thematic analysis of transcribed data was conducted using NVivo (QSR International Pty Ltd. [2020] NVivo [version 12]). RESULTS Twenty African immigrant parents (Mean age: 42 years, Female: 95%) residing in Northern and Central Illinois participated in a total of five focus group sessions. Seven themes were derived from the analysis. Participants had a positive attitude toward healthy diet and had a high level of interest in receiving educational resources to make healthier food choices. Participants preferred and mostly consumed foods they were familiar with before migration. A majority of the participants perceived 'American foods' as unhealthy, characterizing them as containing a high amount of sugar and salt. Parents reported that their school-aged children often preferred a western diet over traditional African meals. CONCLUSION This study helps to understand unique diet-related practices and perceptions of recent Nigerian and Congolese African immigrants in Illinois. Findings could help to inform cultural adaptation of evidence-based nutrition education programs for these groups of African immigrants.

Abstract
Weight gain prevention is a global public health priority to address escalating adiposity in adults. This review evaluates the efficacy of weight gain prevention trials targeting adults aged 18-50 years and adheres to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. Trials of any duration from inception to May 2020 that evaluated a weight gain prevention intervention (using either prescriptive diet, prescriptive physical activity, prescriptive diet, and/or physical activity or non-prescriptive lifestyle) and included weight or body mass index (weight [kg]/height [m2 ]) were eligible. Twenty-nine trials across 34 publications (participants n = 37,407) were included. Intervention resulted in less weight gain compared with controls (-1.15 kg [95% CI -1.50, -0.80 kg] p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis demonstrated greater effectiveness with prescriptive (-1.60 kg [95% CI -2.00, -1.19] p < 0.001) compared with non-prescriptive (-0.81 kg [95% CI 1.10, -0.53] p < 0.001) intervention types. Interventions had greatest impact in healthy weight (18.5-24.9 kg/m2 ) (-0.82 kg [95% CI -1.5, -0.50] p < 0.001) or overweight (25.0-29.9 kg/m2 ) (-1.48 kg [95% CI -1.85, -1.12] p < 0.001) compared with obese populations (≥30.0 kg/m2 ) (-0.56 kg [95% CI -1.40, 0.27] p = 0.19). These findings demonstrate that lifestyle intervention prevents cumulative weight gain in non-obese adults, with future research required to inform cost-effectiveness and implementation feasibility.
