Use Alkalinity Monitoring to Optimize Bioreactor Performance

Dissolved inorganic and organic carbon export from tile-drained midwestern agricultural systems

While carbon is a critically important natural element cycling through the soil profile of agricultural systems, few studies have examined the flux of dissolved organic carbon (OC) and inorganic carbon (IC) through artificially-drained cropped fields. In this study, we monitored eight tile outlets, nine groundwater wells and the receiving stream during a March to November period in 2018 to quantify subsurface IC and OC flux from tiles and groundwater to a perennial stream from a single cropped field in north-central Iowa. Results showed that carbon export from the field was dominated by IC losses through subsurface drainage tiles that were 20× higher than dissolved OC concentration in tiles, groundwater and in Hardin Creek. IC loads from tiles comprised approximately 96 % of the total carbon export. Detailed soil sampling within the field quantified TC stocks to a 1.2 m depth (246,514 kg/ha), and based on the maximum annual rate of IC loss from the field (553 kg/ha per year), we estimated that approximately 0.23 % of the TC content (0.32 % of the TOC content and 0.70 % of the TIC content) of the shallow soils was lost in a single year. Loss of dissolved carbon from the field is likely offset by reduced tillage and additions of lime. Study results suggest that attention should be given to improved monitoring of aqueous total carbon export from fields for accurate accounting of carbon sequestration performance.

Paired denitrifying bioreactors with wide orientation for increased drainage flow capacity

Denitrifying bioreactors are a conservation drainage practice for reducing nitrate loads in subsurface agricultural drainage. Bioreactor hydraulic capacity is limited by cross-sectional area perpendicular to flow through the woodchip bed, with excess bypass flow untreated. Paired bioreactors with wide orientations were built in 2017 in Illinois, USA, to treat drainage from a relatively large 29 ha field. The paired design consisted of: a larger, Main bioreactor (LWD: 6.1 × 18.3 × 0.9 m) for treating base flow, and 2) a smaller, Booster bioreactor (7.8 × 13.1 × 0.9 m) receiving bypass flow from the Main bioreactor during periods of high flow. Over three years of monitoring, the paired bioreactor captured 84-92% of the annual drainage discharge which demonstrated an expanded cross-sectional area could improve bioreactor flow capture, even for a large drainage area. However, the paired bioreactors removed 6-28% of the annual N load leaving the field (1.8-5.6 kg N ha^-1 removed; 52-161 kg N), which was not a notable improvement compared to bioreactors treating smaller drainage areas. The design operated as intended at low annual flow-weighted hydraulic retention times (HRTs) of usually ≤2 h, but these short HRTs ultimately limited bioreactor nitrate removal efficiency. Daily HRTs of <2 h often resulted in nitrate flushing. The Main bioreactor had higher hydraulic loading as intended and was responsible for the majority of flow captured in each year although not always the most nitrate mass removal. The Booster bioreactor provided better nitrate removal than the Main at HRTs of 3.0-11.9 h, possibly due to its drying cycles which may have liberated more available carbon. This new design approach tested at the field-scale illustrated tradeoffs between greater flow capacity (via increased bioreactor width) and longer HRT (via increased length), given a consistent bioreactor surface footprint.

Evaluation of pollution swapping phenomena from a woodchip denitrification wall targetting removal of nitrate in a shallow gravel aquifer

Woodchip denitrification walls offer a potentially useful way for passive in situ remediation of groundwater nitrate pollution, yet because of the low redox state they induce on the subsurface environment there is an inherent risk they can promote pollution-swapping phenomena. We evaluated pollution-swapping phenomena associated with the first two operational years of a woodchip denitrification wall that is being trialled in a fast-flowing shallow gravel aquifer of quartzo-feldspathic mineralogy. Following burial of woodchip below the water table there was immediate export of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), phosphorus and ammonium into the groundwater. Under the low redox state sustained by labile DOC, the wall initially provided 100% nitrate removal at the expense of acute and localised pollution that occurred in the form of a plume of dissolved iron, manganese and arsenic that were mobilised from the aquifer sediments, in conjunction with methane gas emission. Within one year however, the reactivity of the woodchip wall subsided to support a steady state condition in which nitrate reduction was the terminal electron acceptor process with no measurable methane emission. Having initially functioned as a sink for the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N₂O), evidence is that the woodchip wall is now exporting N₂O, albeit at rates less than those associated with productive agricultural land.

Performance of Field-Scale Phosphorus Removal Structures Utilizing Steel Slag for Treatment of Subsurface Drainage

Reducing dissolved phosphorus (P) losses from legacy P soils to surface waters is necessary for preventing algal blooms. Phosphorus removal structures containing steel slag have shown success in treating surface runoff for dissolved P, but little is known about treating subsurface (tile) drainage. A ditch-style and subsurface P removal structure were constructed using steel slag in a bottom-up flow design for treating tile drainage. Nearly 97% of P was delivered during precipitation-induced flow events (as opposed to baseflow) with inflow P concentrations increasing with flow rate. Structures handled flow rates approximately 12 L s−1, and the subsurface and ditch structures removed 19.2 (55%) and 0.9 kg (37%) of the cumulative dissolved P load, respectively. Both structures underperformed relative to laboratory flow-through experiments and exhibited signs of flow inhibition with time. Dissolved P removal decreased dramatically when treated water pH decreased <8.5. Although slag has proven successful for treating surface runoff, we hypothesize that underperformance in this case was due to tile drainage bicarbonate consumption of slag calcium through the precipitation of calcium carbonate, thereby filling pore space, decreasing flow and pH, and preventing calcium phosphate precipitation. We do not recommend non-treated steel slag for removing dissolved P from tile drainage unless slag is replaced every 4–6 months.

Effectiveness of a newly reconstructed floodplain oxbow to reduce NO3-N loads from a spring flood

Enhancing NO₃-N processing in floodplains offers opportunities to achieve water quality improvements in agricultural watersheds but few studies have quantified the effectiveness of newly reconstructed oxbows to reduce loads delivered from floods. In this study, we evaluated NO₃-N retention during a spring storm water runoff event in a newly reconstructed oxbow (<1 year old) located along Morgan Creek in eastern Iowa. A 30-h flood connected the oxbow to the creek for approximately nine hours and delivered 14.7 kg of NO₃-N into the oxbow. Using a NO₃-N sensor, oxbow NO3-N concentrations were observed to increase from 0.7 to 5.3 mg/l after the flood event, but decreased to background conditions over the next 21 days. We estimated NO₃-N retention to be 0.30 g N m^-2 d^-1 and the NO3-N retention efficiency to be 74.2% for the single flood event. The NO₃-N mass reduction in the oxbow intersected with predicted mass reduction from a first-order denitrification decay model after 21 days which suggests that denitrification was largely responsible for the observed NO₃-N decrease. However, the effectiveness of the oxbow for reducing watershed-scale N loads appears to be limited, since the oxbow is located in a low-nutrient floodplain and would only retain NO₃-N loads when delivered to the oxbow via flooding. Study results suggest that oxbows provides valuable ecosystem services during non-flooding periods and are activated for NO₃-N load reduction during floods.

Moving Denitrifying Bioreactors beyond Proof of Concept: Introduction to the Special Section

Denitrifying bioreactors are organic carbon-filled excavations designed to enhance the natural process of denitrification for the simple, passive treatment of nitrate-nitrogen. Research on and installation of these bioreactors has accelerated within the past 10 years, particularly in watersheds concerned about high nonpoint-source nitrate loads and also for tertiary wastewater treatment. This special section, inspired by the meeting of the Managing Denitrification in Agronomic Systems Community at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America, and Soil Science Society of America, aims to firmly establish that denitrifying bioreactors for treatment of nitrate in drainage waters, groundwater, and some wastewaters have moved beyond the proof of concept. This collection of 14 papers expands the peer-reviewed literature of denitrifying bioreactors into new locations, applications, and environmental conditions. There is momentum behind the pairing of wood-based bioreactors with other media (biochar, corn cobs) and in novel designs (e.g., use within treatment trains or use of baffles) to broaden applicability into new kinds of waters and pollutants and to improve performance under challenging field conditions such as cool early season agricultural drainage. Concerns about negative bioreactor by-products (nitrous oxide and hydrogen sulfide emissions, start-up nutrient flushing) are ongoing, but this translates into a significant research opportunity to develop more advanced designs and to fine tune management strategies. Future research must think more broadly to address bioreactor impacts on holistic watershed health and greenhouse gas balances and to facilitate collaborations that allow investigation of mechanisms within the bioreactor "black box."
