Nitrifying Kinetics and the Persistence of Nitrite in the Seine River, France

Identifying nitrate sources and transformations in an agricultural watershed in Northeast China: Insights from multiple isotopes

Accurate identification of riverine nitrate sources is required for preventing and controlling nitrogen contamination in agricultural watersheds. The water chemistry and multiple stable isotopes (δ¹⁵N-NO₃, δ¹⁸O-NO₃, δ²H-H₂O, and δ¹⁸O-H₂O) of the river water and groundwater in an agricultural watershed in China's northeast black soil region were analyzed to better understand the sources and transformations of riverine nitrogen. Results showed that nitrate is an important pollutant that affects water quality in this watershed. Affected by factors such as seasonal rainfall changes and spatial differences in land use, the nitrate concentrations in the river water showed obvious temporal and spatial variations. The riverine nitrate concentration was higher in the wet season than in the dry season, and higher downstream than upstream. The water chemistry and dual nitrate isotopes revealed that riverine nitrate came primarily from manure and sewage (M&S). Results from the SIAR model showed that it accounted for more than 40% of riverine nitrate in the dry season. The proportional contribution of M&S decreased during the wet season due to the increased contribution of chemical fertilizers and soil nitrogen induced by large amounts of rainfall. The δ²H-H₂O and δ¹⁸O-H₂O signatures implied that interactions occurred between the river water and groundwater. Considering the large accumulation of nitrates in the groundwater, restoring groundwater nitrate levels is essential for controlling riverine nitrate pollution. As a systematic study on the sources, migration, and transformations of nitrate/nitrogen in agricultural watersheds in black soil regions, this research can provide a scientific support for nitrate pollution management in the Xinlicheng Reservoir watershed and provide a reference for other watersheds in black soil regions in the world with similar conditions.

Influence of organic ammonium derivatives on the equilibria between NH4+, NO2- and NO3- ions in the Nistru River water

The toxic effects of ammonium derivatives in the river water depend dramatically on their natural or synthetic origins and on their chemical structures. It has been proved that 1-naphtylamine (1-NA) and diphenylamine (DPA) breaking impact on the ammonium oxidation and especially on nitrite ions oxidation processes in natural waters is associated with its toxicity. The NH₄⁺ oxidation process slows down for about five days and ten days in river water samples with 0.5 mg/L DPA and corresponding 0.5 mg/L 1-NA. The NO₂⁻ oxidation delay in model samples of river water with 0.025 and 0.05 mg/L 1-NA, is four days and 35 days in the one with 0.5 mg/L 1-NA. For the sample with 0.05 mg/L DPA the delay of the NO₂⁻ oxidation is approximately of six days and 25 days for sample with 0.5 mg/L, DPA. The laboratory simulations have revealed: (1) absorption–desorption, the micro biotic reaction to the instantaneous increase of the concentration of ammonium ion in the river water (so-called shock/stress effect) and (2) the NH₄⁺ increase stimulated by a certain (0.05 mg/L) concentration of 1-NA.The diethylamine (DEA) decomposition leads to increasing with approximately 3.8 mg/L NH₄⁺ in river water samples of 20.0 mg/L DEA.

Sodium nitrite negatively affects reproductive ability and offspring survival in female mice

Sodium nitrite (NaNO₂) is an industrial chemical that is frequently used as a food additive to prevent botulism and enhance glossiness, such as curing meat. In addition, in some regions, water source NaNO₂ concentrations exceed standard regulatory levels. Whether the excessive intake of NaNO₂ has toxic effects on female fertility and fetal development remain unknown. In this study, we administered ICR mice control saline, low-dose NaNO₂ (60 mg/kg/day), or high-dose NaNO₂ (120 mg/kg/day) by intragastric gavage for 21 days. We then assessed oocyte morphology, spindle-chromosome dynamics, mitochondrial distribution, ATP content, apoptotic cell numbers, DNA damage levels, histone modifications, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and offspring survival. Results showed that NaNO₂ treatment decreased oocyte number, impaired polar body extrusion, and increased zona pellucida thickness in oocytes. Furthermore, NaNO₂ disrupted MII spindle integrity, caused abnormal mitochondrial distribution, decreased ATP content, and increased levels of ROS and H3K4me2. Moreover, the number of oocytes in early stages of apoptosis and with levels of DNA damage increased in NaNO₂-treated mice along with decreased offspring numbers and survival rates. We demonstrated the negative effects of NaNO₂ on female reproductive abilities in mice.

Benthic nitrite exchanges in the Seine River (France): An early diagenetic modeling analysis

Nitrite is a toxic intermediate compound in the nitrogen (N) cycle. Elevated concentrations of nitrite have been observed in the Seine River, raising questions about its sources and fate. Here, we assess the role of bottom sediments as potential sources or sinks of nitrite along the river continuum. Sediment cores were collected from two depocenters, one located upstream, the other downstream, from the largest wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) servicing the conurbation of Paris. Pore water profiles of oxygen, nitrate, nitrite and ammonium were measured. Ammonium, nitrate and nitrite fluxes across the sediment-water interface (SWI) were determined in separate core incubation experiments. The data were interpreted with a one-dimensional, multi-component reactive transport model, which accounts for the production and consumption of nitrite through nitrification, denitrification, anammox and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). In all core incubation experiments, nitrate uptake by the sediments was observed, indicative of high rates of denitrification. In contrast, for both sampling locations, the sediments in cores collected in August 2012 acted as sinks for nitrite, but those collected in October 2013 released nitrite to the overlying water. The model results suggest that the first step of nitrification generated most pore water nitrite at the two locations. While nitrification was also the main pathway consuming nitrite in the sediments upstream of the WWTP, anammox dominated nitrite removal at the downstream site. Sensitivity analyses indicated that the magnitude and direction of the benthic nitrite fluxes most strongly depend on bottom water oxygenation and the deposition flux of labile organic matter.
