Application of Identification and Evaluation Techniques for Ethnobotanical Medicinal Plant of Genus Panax: A Review

Genus Panax, as worldwide medicinal plants, has a medical history for thousands of years. Most of the entire genus are traditional ethnobotanical medicine in China, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos, which have given rise to international attention and use. This paper reviewed more than 210 articles and related books on the research of Panax medicinal plants and their Chinese patent medicines published in the last 30 years. The purpose was to review and summarize the species classification, geographical distribution, and ethnic minorities medicinal records of the genus Panax, and further to review the analytical tools and data analysis methods for the authentication and quality assessment of Panax medicinal materials and Chinese patent medicines. Five main technologies applied in the identification and evaluation of Panax have been introduced and summarized. Chromatography was the most widely used one. Further research and development of molecular identification technology had the potential to become a mainstream identification technology. In addition, some novel, controversial, and worthy methods including electronic noses, electronic eyes, and DNA barcoding were also introduced. At the same time, more than 80% of the researches were carried out by a combination of chemometric pattern-recognition technologies and multi-analysis technologies. All the technologies and methods applied can provide strong support and guarantee for the identification and evaluation of genus Panax, and also conduce to excellent reference value for the development and in-depth research of new technologies in Panax.

Removal of labile arsenic from flooded paddy soils with a novel extractive column loaded with quartz-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron

Efficient removal of labile arsenic (As) from paddy soil is a fundamental pathway mitigating As accumulation in rice from a long-term perspective. In this study, a porous and pencil-shaped column prepacked with quartz-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) was designed to extract elevated porewater As from paddy soil under flooded condition. With fine quartz as supporting medium in the core layer, only 0.07% out-migration of the loaded NZVI occurred in arsenite As(III) solution. At pH 5-9, removal of aqueous As(III) with NZVI-column was 73-78%, while silicic acid and phosphate at their environmentally realistic concentrations exhibited 27-30% and 14-17% inhibition on As(III) extraction, respectively. For two paddy soils with slight (S-As) and moderate (M-As) As contamination, four cycles of intermittent extraction with NZVI-column induced steady and marked decrease in porewater As. By the end of four successive extractions, profiles of DGT-labile As in S-As and M-As soils decreased by 22% and 29% on average with simultaneous decline of the most available fraction of soil As (including soluble and exchangeable fraction) by 26% and 17%, respectively. For the post-extracted two soils, As accumulation of rice seedlings declined by 29-57% than those in control. These results identify the effectiveness of NZVI-column in extracting elevated labile As from paddy soils with the aid of flooding. Targeting fast removal of high porewater As, column-extraction could serve as the first step in "remediation train" of paddy soils with relatively high As to shorten cleanup time by rendering much lowered soil As burden for the following phytoextraction and other measures.

Cadmium and arsenic accumulation during the rice growth period under in situ remediation

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) planted in cadmium (Cd)- and arsenic (As)-contaminated soil is considered the main source of dietary Cd and As intake for humans in Southeast Asia and thereby poses a threat to human health. Minimizing the transfer of these pollutants to rice grain is an urgent task for environmental researchers. The main objective of this study was to investigate the effects and the mechanisms of a combined amendment (hydroxyapatite + zeolite + biochar, HZB) on decreasing Cd and As accumulation in rice. In situ remediation and aqueous solution adsorption experiments were conducted. The results showed that after application of HZB, Cd and As concentrations of the exchangeable fraction and TCLP extraction in soil decreased with the growth of rice plants. Cd concentrations in rice tissues were decreased at the tillering, filling and maturing stages after in situ remediation, while As concentrations in rice tissues were decreased only at the maturing stage. When 8 kg·plot^-1 (9000 kg ha^-1) HZB was applied, concentrations of Cd and inorganic As in brown rice were decreased to 0.18 and 0.16 mg kg^-1, respectively, lower than the levels permissible for grain in China, i.e., 0.2 mg kg^-1. Application of HZB reduced Cd accumulation in rice tissues, and the suppression of Cd accumulation was significantly greater than that of As. Furthermore, HZB significantly increased rice grain yield. An aqueous solution adsorption experiment demonstrated that HZB could adsorb and covalently bind Cd and As (V) via -OH, -COOH, -Si-O-Si and CO₃^2- groups to produce carboxylates, silicates and carbonates, thereby promoting in situ immobilization of Cd and As in soil solution.
