Psychological symptoms in adult Saudi Arabian cancer patients: prevalence and association with self-rated oral health

Assessment of oral health and care in head and neck oncology patients in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center-Jeddah

Objectives

To assess oral hygiene indices, dental status, and oral health practices among head and neck cancer patients at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center (KFSHRC)-Jeddah.

Materials and Methods

The charts of 117 patients with head and neck cancer were reviewed to identify the decayed/missing/filled teeth (DMFT) index, calculus index (CI), gingival index (MGI), and oral hygiene index. The type of cancer, other systemic diseases, and sex data were extracted from the records and analyzed using SPSS statistical software for descriptive statistics, Student’s t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Spearman correlation statistical analyses.

Results

The total mean DMFT index was 14.33. The significant caries index (SiC) for the studied sample was 25.87. Men had a mean DMFT of 14.11 (SD 9.8). The mean DMFT index for women was 14.63 (SD 9.7). The DMFT score for patients with systemic disease was 17.47 (SD 9.9). Patients with no other diseases had a mean DMFT score of 12.82 (SD 9.3). The DMFT index was not significantly different between men and women (p = 0.925). One-way ANOVA (F = 1.729) revealed no significant difference (p = 0.110) between DMFT scores according to the location of the cancer. DMFT with systemic disease showed no significant difference (p = 0.6) in comparison to patients without systemic disease.

The Spearman rho statistic revealed no correlation between the DMFT score and CI (p = 0.383).

Conclusions

The total DMFT score was 14.33. The total SiC was 25.87. The DMFT scores of men and women were not significantly different. Cancer location and presence or absence of systemic diseases did not affect the DMFT score. The DMFT score and CI were not correlated, but a correlation was found between the DMFT score and MGI and the oral hygiene index.

Prevalence of Depression and the Quality-of-Life of Breast Cancer Patients in Jordan

Objective

The objectives of the current study are to evaluate the prevalence of depression symptoms among breast cancer patients in Jordan and impact of the disease on patient’s quality-of-life.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted over a 6-month period among breast cancer patients attending two major hospitals in Jordan. A validated questionnaire was used to evaluate the prevalence of depression symptoms and quality-of-life aspects among those patients utilizing Beck’s Depression Inventory-II score and 36-Item Survey Form (SF-36) score, respectively.

Results

The mean age±SD of patients (n=169) was 49.12±6.48 years. Depression symptoms were reported in 30.2% of patients. As for quality-of-life, the physical functioning (PF) subscale was significantly associated with the patient’s age (P=0.03). The role-physical (RP) subscale was associated with number of sleeping hours (P=0.038). Marital status of breast cancer patients was significantly associated with role-emotional (RE) (P=0.015) and mental health (MH) (P=0.009) subscales. The number of patient’s siblings was significantly associated with daily habits such as PF (P=0.031) and RP (P=0.005) subscales. Moreover, the occupation of patients was associated with the PF (P=0.041) and MH (P=0.049).

Conclusion

About one-third of breast cancer patients reported depression symptoms. Quality-of-life subscales among those patients were associated with multiple social and health determinants, such as age, marital status, number of siblings, occupation, and number of sleeping hours. There is urgent need to support this group of patients to help them to cope with depression symptoms and to improve their quality-of-life.

Prevalence and Predictors of Depression, Anxiety and Stress Symptoms in Paramedics at Saudi Red Crescent Authority

Background:

Emergency medical professionals often encounter situations when dealing with patients that can affect their mental health. In Saudi Arabia, there is paucity of data regarding the mental health of paramedics involved in prehospital care.

Objectives:

To determine the prevalence and predictors of stress, anxiety and depression symptoms among paramedics working at Saudi Red Crescent Authority (SRCA) stations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Methods:

This cross-sectional, questionnaire study included all paramedics working in the prehospital medical services of 21 SRCA stations in Riyadh (N = 300) between March and June 2017. Sociodemographic data were collected using a self-reporting questionnaire, and the Arabic version of the Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 was used to identify the states of stress, anxiety and depression. Bivariate analysis using chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed to determine the association between sociodemographic factors and mental health.

Results:

In total, 240 emergency medical professionals responded (response rate = 80%). Of these, 30.5% had stress, 40% had anxiety and 26.7% had depression. All cases of stress were of mild-to-moderate level, while 5.1% of the respondents had severe-to-extremely severe anxiety and 1.3% had severe depression; there were no cases of extremely severe depression. Number of mission calls was identified as a predictor for stress and anxiety; intake of medications for noncommunicable diseases as a predictor for stress and depression; hours of sleep/day for anxiety and depression and use of stimulant beverages other than tea, coffee and energy drinks as predictors for anxiety.

Conclusion:

This study demonstrates that stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms are relatively common in paramedics working at SRCA stations in Riyadh. The authors suggest that the above-mentioned predictors should be monitored in paramedics and interventions should be made when necessary.
