Abstract
Purpose This study aimed to explore the spontaneous brain activity in patients with diabetic optic neuropathy (DON) by using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) technique. Methods Sixteen DON patients and 16 age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. ALFF along with functional MRI method was used to detect the intrinsic brain activity alterations. The mean values of ALFF in DON patients and HCs were analyzed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to determine the correlation between Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and ALFF values of DONs. Results The DON group showed significantly increased ALFF values in the fusiform gyrus, and decreased ALFF values in the medial frontal gyrus/left frontal superior orbit/right frontal medial orbit, and left frontal inferior triangle. ROC curve analysis indicated that the accuracy of AUC was good. The anxiety scale and depression scale of the DON group were negatively correlated with the ALFF values of the medial frontal gyrus. Conclusion DON is a neurodegenerative disease involving multiple brain regions. The abnormal activity of neurons in these brain regions helps to reveal the underlying neural mechanisms of brain activity related to DON.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Idiopathic congenital nystagmus (CN) is a rare eye disease that can cause early blindness (EB). CN deficits are observed most frequently with oculomotor dysfunction; however, it is still unclear what neuromechanics underly CN with EB. Based on that visual experience requires the functional integration of both hemispheres, we hypothesized that CN adolescents with EB might exhibit impaired interhemispheric synchrony. Our study aimed to investigate the interhemispheric functional connectivity alterations using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) and their relationships with clinical features in CN patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 21 patients with CN and EB, and 21 sighted controls (SC), who were matched for sex, age and educational level. The 3.0 T MRI scan and ocular examination were performed. The VMHC differences were examined between the two groups, and the relationships between mean VMHC values in altered brain regions and clinical variables in the CN group were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. RESULTS Compared with the SC group, the CN had increased VMHC values in the bilateral cerebellum posterior and anterior lobes/cerebellar tonsil/declive/pyramis/culmen/pons, middle frontal gyri (BA 10) and frontal eye field/superior frontal gyri (BA 6 and BA 8). No particular areas of the brain had lower VMHC values. Furthermore, no correlation with the duration of disease or blindness could be demonstrated in CN. CONCLUSION Our results suggest the existence of interhemispheric connectivity changes and provide further evidence for the neurological basis of CN with EB.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the abnormal time-varying local spontaneous brain activity in patients with high myopia (HM) on the basis of the dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (dALFF) approach. METHODS Age and gender matching were performed based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 86 HM patients and 87 healthy controls (HCs). Local spontaneous brain activities were evaluated using the time-varying dALFF method. Support vector machine combined with the radial basis function kernel was used for pattern classification analysis. RESULTS Inter-group comparison between HCs and HM patients has demonstrated that dALFF variability in the left inferior frontal gyrus (orbital part), left lingual gyrus, right anterior cingulate and paracingulate gyri, and right calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex was decreased in HM patients, while increased in the left thalamus, left paracentral lobule, and left inferior parietal (except supramarginal and angular gyri). Pattern classification between HM patients and HCs displayed a classification accuracy of 85.5%. CONCLUSION In this study, the findings mentioned above have suggested the association between local brain activities of HM patients and abnormal variability in brain regions performing visual sensorimotor and attentional control functions. Several useful information has been provided to elucidate the mechanism-related alterations of the myopic nervous system. In addition, the significant role of abnormal dALFF variability has been highlighted to achieve an in-depth comprehension of the pathological alterations and neuroimaging mechanisms in the field of HM.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Auditory perception and associated cognition involve visual and auditory cortical areas for inference of meaningful soundscape. OBJECTIVE To investigate auditory perception of ambiguous and non-ambiguous stimulation in auditory and visual cortical networks for categorical discrimination. METHODOLOGY Functional mapping was carried out in twenty early (EB), twenty late blind (LB) and fifteen healthy children, during auditory ambiguous and non-ambiguous stimulation task in a 3 T MR scanner to estimate hemodynamic signal alteration and its effect on functional connectivity. The degree of amplitude low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), correlation analysis and multiple comparison was carried out to map the impact of duration of education and onset of blindness (EB and LB). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Increased functional connectivity (FC) and cross-modal reorganization was observed in auditory, visual and language networks in EB children. FC was increased in contralateral hemisphere in both the blind children (EB and LB) groups and was positively correlated with duration of education performance. Cognitive assessment scores correlated (p < 0.01) with cluster coefficient of FC and BOLD response. CONCLUSION FC alterations depend on onset age and audio-haptic training in children associated with increased auditory language and memory perception.

Abstract
Objective The percent amplitude of fluctuation (PerAF) technique was utilized to evaluate the neural functions of specific cerebrum areas in patients with toothache (TA). Patients and Methods An aggregation of 18 patients with TA (eight males and 10 females) were included in the study. We also recruited 18 healthy controls (HCs; eight men and 10 women) aligned for sex and age. Resting functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans were obtained. Then, we utilized the PerAF method and a support vector machine (SVM) to analyze the image data and measure neural abnormalities in related cerebrum areas. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was utilized to appraise the two data sets. Results The PerAF signals in the right dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus (RDSFG) and the right posterior central gyrus (RPCG) of TA sufferers were lower than HC signals. These results may reveal neural dysfunctions in relevant cerebrum regions. The AUC values of PerAF in the two areas were 0.979 in the RDSFG and 0.979 in the RPCG. The SVM results suggested that PerAF could be utilized to distinguish the TA group from HCs with a sensitivity of 75.00%, a specificity of 66.67%, and an accuracy of 70.83%. Conclusion Patients with TA had marked differences in PerAF values in some regions of the cerebrum. Changes in PerAF values represented distinctions in blood oxygen level dependent semaphore intensity, which reflected the overactivity or inactivation of some cerebrum areas in those suffering from TA. At the same time, we analyzed the PerAF values of TAs with ROC curve, which can be helpful for the diagnosis of TA severity and subsequent treatment. Our results may help to elucidate the pathological mechanism of TA.

Abstract
Background The fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method has been underutilized in research on the pathogenesis and clinical manifestations of ocular hypertension (OH). Purpose This study uses resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and fALFF to investigate the nature of spontaneous brain activity in OH patients and the relationship, if any, between changes in activity and clinical features. Materials and Methods A total of 18 subjects (9 females and 9 males) with ocular hypertension (OH) and 18 healthy controls (HCs) matched for gender, age, and educational level were recruited to this study. All participants underwent an rs-fMRI scan, and spontaneous brain activity was assessed using the fALFF method. Receiver operating characteristic curves were plotted to investigate differences between OH and HC groups. Results The fALFF values of OH patients were significantly higher in the left precuneus lobe (LP), compared with the same region in controls (P < 0.05). Conversely, values in the left anterior cingulate lobe (LAC), were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in OH than in controls. However, no significant association was found between the mean fALFF values and clinical characteristics in either brain area. Conclusion High spontaneous activity in two brain areas may reflect neuropathological mechanisms underpinning visual impairment in OH patients.

Abstract
Objective We used the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method to investigate spontaneous brain activity in patients with optic neuritis (ON) in specific frequency bands. Data and Methods A sample of 21 patients with ON (13 female and eight male) and 21 healthy controls (HCs) underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans in the resting state. We analyzed the ALFF values at different frequencies (slow-4 band: 0.027–0.073 Hz; slow-5 band: 0.01–0.027 Hz) in ON patients and HCs. Results In the slow-4 frequency range, compared with HCs, ON patients had apparently lower ALFF in the insula and the whack precuneus. In the slow-5 frequency range, ON patients showed significantly increased ALFF in the left parietal inferior and the left postcentral. Conclusion Our results suggest that ON may be involved in abnormal brain function and can provide a basis for clinical research.

Abstract
In recent years, the impact of various chronic eye diseases on quality of life has become increasingly apparent. Therefore, it is particularly important to control the progress of chronic diseases at an early stage. Many studies have used neuroimaging methods to explore the effects of chronic eye diseases on the brain, and to identify changes in brain function that may act as markers for early diagnosis and treatment. This article reviews the clinical application of different techniques of functional magnetic resonance imaging in chronic eye diseases.

Abstract
AIM To assess changed spontaneous brain activity in hyperthyroid exophthalmos (HE) patients by the amplitude of the low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method, and to analyze the correlation between brain activity and ALFF values in these patients. METHODS Totally 18 HE and 18 hyperthyroid non-exophthalmos (HNE) patients were enrolled. The participants were tested by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were generated to classify the ALFF values of the study population. Pearson's correlation analysis was utilized to evaluate the relationship between the ALFF values obtained from different brain areas and clinical manifestations. RESULTS Contrary to HNE patients, we observed lower ALFF values in the left calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex (LCFSC) in HE patients. In the ROC curve analysis of the LCFSC, the area under the curve reflected a high degree of accuracy. In addition, there was positive correlation between mean ALFF values of the LCFSC and the best-corrected visual acuity of the affected eyes. CONCLUSION The study displays abnormal brain activity in LCFSC in patients with HE, which might suggest pathological mechanism of visual impairment of HE patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies demonstrated that thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) patients were accompanied by cognitive decline. However, The exact neural mechanisms of cognitive decline in TAO patients remain unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the spontaneous brain activity alterations using amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method and their relationships with clinical features in TAO patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, twenty-one patients with TAO (14 men and 7 women) and 21 healthy control (HC) subjects (14 men and 7 women) were enrolled in this study. The ALFF method was used to assess the spontaneous brain activity changes. Meanwhile, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to distinguish TAO group and HCs group. And Pearson correlation was performed to calculate the relationship between the observed mean ALFF values of the altered regions in patients with TAO and their clinical features. RESULTS Compared with the HCs, TAO patients had significantly lower ALFF values in the right superior occipital gyrus (SOG) and bilateral precuneus (preCUN). In contrast, TAO patients showed higher ALFF values in the left cerebellum (CER) and left insula (INS). CONCLUSION our result highlighted that TAO patients showed altered intrinsic brain activities in the preCUN, left CER, left INS and right SOG, which might provide useful information for explaining neural mechanisms in patients with TAO.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the changes of amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) in brain regions of patients with hypertensive retinopathy by using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and change in the relationship of ALFF value with potential emotional and psychological changes. Methods: Thirty-one patients with hypertensive retinopathy (HR) (16 men and 15 women) and 31 healthy controls (HCs; 16 men and 15 women) matched for age, sex, and weight were enrolled in the research. The changes in mean ALFF values could reflect brain activity between HR patients and HCs. We used the independent samples t-test to evaluate different demographic and general information between the two groups. Two-sample t-test was used to detect differences of mean ALFF values in the brain region between the two groups using the same software. Results: The ALFF values in the brain areas of HR and HCs were different. HR patients had lower ALFF value in the left medial superior frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus than the HCs. The higher ALFF values were found in the cerebellum (left inferior and right superior lobes, vermis) and left inferior temporal gyrus of the HR patients than the controls. Conclusion: Our findings showed fluctuations in ALFF values in the HR patients’ brain regions. ALFF values reflect over or reduced activity in brain regions. Abnormal ALFF values in these brain areas can predict early HR development, preventing the malignant transformation of hypertensive microangiopathy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate whether unilateral late blindness alters the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), ganglion cell complex (GCC), central macular thickness (CMT) and choroidal thickness (CT). METHODS The 17 healthy eyes of 17 monocular patients with late blindness due to isolated eye trauma in one eye and the 19 eyes of 19 healthy individuals were evaluated in this retrospective study. Patients with at least 10 years of monocular blindness, a refractive error between + 1.5 and -1.5 D in the sighted eye, a best-corrected visual acuity of at least 20/20 and an axial length (AL) < 25 mm were included in the study. Following ophthalmologic examination, the RNFL, GCC, CMT and CT values were measured with spectral domain optic tomography (SD-OCT). Those with ocular, systemic or neurological disease that could influence the measured parameters were excluded from the study. RESULTS A total of 17 (14 males, 3 females) monocular patients [mean age 41.00 ± 11.95 (24-64)] and 19 (16 males, 3 females) healthy individuals [mean age 39.79 ± 6.74 (30-56)], similar in age and gender (p = 0.949 and p = 0.881), were included in the study. The mean duration of being monocular was 22.76 ± 11.76 (10-49) years. No difference was present between the RNFL, GCC, CMT and CT measurements of the monocular patients and the healthy individuals (p = 0.692, p = 0.294, p = 0.113, p = 0.623, respectively). No significant correlation was found between the duration of monocularity and the retinal and optic nerve parameters. CONCLUSION The results of our study indicate no difference in the optic nerve, retina and choroid OCT findings in the sighted eyes of subjects with long-term monocular blindness compared to subjects with bilateral normal eyes. Although functional and volumetric neuroimaging studies suggest the possibility of compensation in these patients, our findings indicate that this is not at the ocular level.

Abstract
Previous neuroimaging studies demonstrated that patients with strabismus or amblyopia can show significant functional and anatomical changes in the brain, but alterations of interhemispheric functional connectivity (FC) have not been well studied in this population. The current study analyzed whole-brain changes of interhemispheric FC in children with strabismus and amblyopia (CSA) using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC).A total of 24 CSA (16 males and 8 females) and 24 normal controls (NCs) consisting of 16 and 8 age-, sex, and education-matched males and females, respectively, underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans in the resting state. According to Gaussian random field theory, changes in the resting state FC (rsFC) between hemispheres were evaluated using the VMHC method. The relationships between mean VMHC values in multiple brain regions and behavioral performance were evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis. In contrast to NCs, the CSA group showed significantly decreased VMHC values in the bilateral cerebellum, bilateral frontal superior orbital (frontal sup orb), bilateral temporal inferior(temporal inf),and bilateral frontal superior(frontal sup). CSA have abnormal interhemispheric FC in many brain regions, which may reflect dysfunction of eye movements and visual fusion. These findings might provide insight into the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms of CSA.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous studies in patients with Alzheimer's disease have shown amyloid beta accumulation in the brain and abnormal brain activity, with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in early stages of the disease. The aim of the current study was to investigate functional connectivity in patients with MCI. METHODS We recruited 24 subjects in total, including 12 patients with MCI (6 men and 6 women) and 12 healthy controls (HCs) (6 men and 6 women), matched for age, gender, and lifestyle factors. All subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans and voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) was used to evaluate alterations in the strength of brain network connectivity. RESULTS The DC value of the left inferior temporal gyrus was lower in MCI but significantly higher in the right fusiform gyrus and the left supplementary motor area, compared with HCs. The DC value in left inferior temporal gyrus correlated positively with disease duration and negatively with Mini-Mental State Examination. ROC curve analysis of brain regions showed acceptable specificity and accuracy of DC values between MCIs and HCs in the area under the curve (right fusiform gyrus, 0.955; left supplementary motor area, 0.992; left inferior temporal gyrus, 1.000). CONCLUSIONS Abnormal functional connectivity in brain regions of patients with MCI may reflect the pathological process of Alzheimer's disease development and could prove useful in clinical diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous research suggests that diabetic optic neuropathy (DON) can cause marked anatomical and functional variations in the brain, but to date altered functional synchronization between two functional hemispheres remains uncharacterized in DON patients. Voxel mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) is a voxel-based method to evaluate the synchronism between two mirrored hemispheric by determining the functional connectivity between each voxel in one hemisphere and its counterpart. In this study, we aim to assess abnormal changes in interhemispheric functional connectivity in DON patients via the VMHC method. METHODS The study included 28 adult DON patients (12 male, 16 female) and 28 healthy controls (12 male, 16 female) who were closely matched for sex and age. Participants were examined using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. The VMHC method was applied to investigate the abnormal state in bilateral hemispheres in DON patients and the same regions in healthy controls, as well as the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to evaluate characteristics. Associations between altered VMHC values in distinct cerebral regions and clinical features were assessed via correlational analysis. RESULTS Markedly lower VMHC values were evident in the right temporal inferior, the left temporal inferior, the right mid-cingulum, the left mid-cingulum, the right supplementary motor region, and the left supplementary motor region in DON patients compared with healthy controls. ROC curve analysis suggested that the application of VMHC is reliable for the diagnosis of DON. CONCLUSION Anomalous interhemispheric functional connectivity in specific brain areas caused by DON may indicate neuropathologic mechanisms of vision loss and blurry vision in patients with DON.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) can cause irreversible visual impairment and abnormal spontaneous changes in brain's visual system and other systems. There is little research on this aspect at present. However, amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFFs) can be used as an rs-fMRI analysis technique for testing changes in spontaneous brain activity patterns. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to probe the local characteristics of spontaneous brain activity in NVG patients and analyze their correlation with clinical behaviors. METHODS Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) scans were obtained from eighteen patients with NVG (8 males, 10 females) and eighteen healthy controls (HCs; 8 males and 10 females) who were matched in age, gender, and education level. We evaluated spontaneous brain activity with the ALFF method. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to compare the average ALFF values for altered brain regions of NVG patients with those of HCs. RESULTS Compared with HCs, NVG patients had lower ALFF values in the right cuneus, right middle occipital gyrus, left cingulate gyrus, right precuneus, and left medial frontal gyrus (p < 0.001). Higher ALFF values were observed in the right superior frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus (p < 0.001). Analysis of the ROC curves of the brain regions showed that the specificity and accuracy of ALFF values between NVG and HCs in the area under the curve were acceptable (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The patients with NVG exhibited anomalous spontaneous activity in different brain regions; these finding should establish the foundation for a more comprehensive understanding of the pathological mechanisms of NVG. Furthermore, these abnormal variations in specific brain regions can be considered possible clinical indices of NVG.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Only a few studies have investigated structural and functional changes in monocular blind individuals. Our aim in this study was to segmentally investigate the cerebellar structures of subjects with late-onset monocular blindness (LMB) using a Voxel-based volumetric analysis system. METHODS The segmental volumetric values, cortical thickness, gray matter volumes and percentage ratios of the cerebellar lobules of individuals with LMB due to trauma and in healthy individuals with bilateral sight as the control group were calculated at the volBrain CERES 1.0 website ( https://volbrain.upv.es/ ) by using brain 3D fast spoiled gradient recall acquisition in steady-state (3D T1 FSPGR) MRI sequence images in our prospective study. RESULTS We studied 11 subjects with LMB (8 males/3 females) and 11 healthy control subjects (8 males/3 females). The mean age was 41.45 ± 14.15 and 40 ± 11.11 years, respectively (p > 0.05). The mean duration of the LMB status was 20.8 ± 11.2 years. Cerebellar lobule crus II volume and cerebellar lobule VIIB/VIIIA volume/percentage were higher in the LMB group, and mean cerebellar cortical thickness, cerebellar lobule VI-cerebellar lobule crus I-II cortical thickness, and cerebellar lobule VI gray matter volume values were lower in the LMB group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION In this study, cerebellar lobule VIIB/VIIIA volume/total percent ratio, cerebellar cortical thickness and cerebellar gray matter volume in the LMB group were found to be different from the control group. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report cerebellar anatomical changes in patients with LMB.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We used fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) technology to investigate spontaneous cerebral activity in patients with monocular blindness (MB) and in healthy controls (HCs). MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty MB patient and 15 HCs were included in this study. All subjects were scanned by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The independent sample t test and chi-squared test were applied to analyze demographics of MB patients and HCs. The 2-sample t test and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were applied to identify the difference in average fALFF values between MB patients and HCs. Pearson's correlation analysis was applied to explore the relationship between the average fALFF values of brain areas and clinical behavior in the MB group. RESULTS MB patients had lower fALFF values in the left anterior cingulate and higher fALFF values in the left precuneus and right and left inferior parietal lobes than in HCs. Moreover, the mean fALFF values of MB patients in the left anterior cingulate had negative correlations with the anxiety scale score (r=-0.825, P<0.001) and the depression scale score (r=-0.871, P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our study found that MB patients had abnormal spontaneous activities in the visual and vision-related regions. The finding of abnormal neuronal activity helps to reveal the underlying neuropathologic mechanisms of vision loss.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies demonstrated that myopia could result in alterations of brain activity in specific areas. However, whether the visual function could improve by Lasik surgery, with the brain activity alterations also change, is still unknown. Here, we intended to use the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) technique to investigate the intrinsic brain activity changes in pre-Lasik (PRL) and post-Lasik (POL) patients. METHODS A total of 15 patients with myopia (nine male and six female) were recruited in our study, who were matched according to age, weight, and height. These patients comprised both the PRL and POL groups, which is self-controlled. The patients all underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and the spontaneous brain activity changes were recorded by the ALFF technique. The data were recorded and arranged in the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, which presented how intrinsic activities altered in different brain regions. Moreover, by Graphpad prism 8, we can analyze the linear correlation between HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and ALFF values as well. RESULTS Differences in ALFF values existed in brain regions between the same patient before and after the Lasik operation. The regions with increased ALFF values after Lasik surgery were the left parahippocampal gyrus, cerebellar vermis, and left posterior cingulate cortex. The regions with decreased ALFF values after Lasik surgery were the left supramarginal gyrus and right trigonometric inferior frontal gyrus. CONCLUSION We demonstrated significant fluctuations of ALFF values in specific brain areas between the same patients before and after the Lasik surgery. The altered ALFF values reflected the hyperactivity or hypoactivity of the specific brain areas, which may help predict the recovery level of patients' vision after Lasik surgery. Furthermore, based on the experimental results that presented significant activity alterations in specific brian regions, patients could be speculated equipped with a better visual function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Visual deprivation can lead to abnormal and plastic changes in the brain's visual system and other systems. Although the secondary changes of gray matter in patients have been well studied, the study of white matter is rare. In fact, subtle changes in white matter may be revealed by diffusion tensor imaging, and tract-based spatial statistics can be used to analyze DTI image data. PURPOSE In the present study, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) were used to investigate abnormal structural changes in the white matter (WM) of patients with monocular blindness (MB). METHODS We recruited 16 healthy controls (HC) (fourteen males and two females) and 16 patients (fifteen males and one female) with right-eye blindness (without differences in left-eye vision). All patients were of similar age. Data acquisition was performed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and DTI. Voxel-based whole brain comparisons of fractional anisotropy (FA) and radial diffusivity (RD) of WM fibers in patients and HC were performed using the TBSS method. The mean FA and RD values for altered brain regions in MB patients were analyzed via the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationships between the average FA (RD) value of the whole brain and anxiety score, depression score, and visual function questionnaire score in MB patients. RESULTS In MB patients, the mean FA of the whole brain was decreased versus HC. Moreover, the FA values of the corpus callosum, the corona radiata, the posterior thalamic radiation, and the right retrolenticular part of internal capsule were significantly decreased. In addition, the average RD value of the whole brain in MB patients was higher than that observed in HC. The mean FA and RD values of brain regions were analyzed using the ROC curve, and the results showed that the area under the ROC curve was more accurate. Furthermore, the average FA and RD values of the whole brain were significantly correlated with anxiety score, depression score, and visual function-related quality of life score. CONCLUSION DTI and TBSS may be useful in examining abnormal spontaneous alterations in the WM of MB patients. The observed changes in FA and RD values may imply the larvaceous neurological mechanism involved in MB.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the local character of spontaneous brain activity in type-2 diabetic patients with vitreous hemorrhage (VH) and its relationship with clinical features via the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) method. A total of 31 subjects (15 females and 16 males) with type-2 diabetic VH and 31 normal controls (NCs) with similar characteristics (sex, age and educational level) were recruited in the present study. All subjects underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. The local character of spontaneous brain activity was assessed using the ALFF method. The difference between the type-2 diabetic patients with VH and NCs was determined using receiver operating characteristic curves. Pearson's correlation analysis was applied to evaluate the relationship between the mean ALFF values of specific brain areas and related clinical manifestations in type-2 diabetic patients with VH. The ALFF values of type-2 diabetic patients with VH were significantly increased in the right and left cerebellum posterior lobes, left cerebellum posterior lobe/left lingual gyrus and bilateral superior frontal gyrus/left postcentral gyrus, compared with those obtained for NCs (P<0.05). By contrast, these values were significantly decreased in the left and right middle frontal gyri, right medial frontal gyrus/left anterior cingulate, right inferior frontal gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, right superior frontal gyrus/middle frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus of the former group compared with the NCs (P<0.05). Nevertheless, there was no significant association between the mean ALFF values and clinical characteristics in different brain areas. Unusual spontaneous activity occurred in multiple brain areas, which may suggest the neuropathological mechanisms of visual impairment in type-2 diabetic patients with VH.

Abstract
AIM To use the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method to explore the underlying functional network brain-activity in patients with ophthalmectomy. METHODS A total of 32 ophthalmic surgery patients (10 women and 22 men), and 32 healthy subjects (10 women and 22 men) highly matched in gender, age, and the same operation method. Everyone experienced a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scan. The spontaneous brain activity could be assessed by DC. Correlation analysis was used to explore the relationships between the average DC signal values and behavior performance in different regions. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was utilized to differentiate between ophthalmectomy patients and healthy controls (HCs). RESULTS Compared with HCs, ophthalmectomy patients had greatly reduced DC values in left lingual gyrus, bilateral lingual lobe, left cingulate gyrus, and increased DC values of left cerebellum posterior lobe, left middle frontal gyrus1, right supramarginal gyrus, left middle frontal gyrus2, right middle frontal gyrus. However, we did not find that there was a correlation between the average DC values from various brain regions and clinical manifestations. CONCLUSION Dysfunction may be caused by ophthalmectomy in lots of cerebral areas, which may show the potential pathological mechanism of ophthalmectomy and it is beneficial to clinical diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the changes in gray matter volume (GMV) in patients with advanced monocular blindness (MB) using voxel-based morphometry (VBM). METHODS Thirty-one patients with advanced MB (25 males and six females) and 31 normal controls (25 males and six females) were enrolled. The t test was applied to determine the differences in GMV, white matter volume (WMV), and volume of cerebrospinal fluid in different regions of the brain. The local characteristics of spontaneous concentrations of brain tissue were evaluated by the VBM method. The effects of blindness duration on differences in the GMV were evaluated by correlation and regression analyses. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the GMV was decreased in the upper right margin, bilateral insular cortex, right cingulate gyrus, left occipital gyrus, and right suboccipital lobe, and negatively correlated with blindness duration in the upper right posterior margin, bilateral insular cortex, and right cingulate cortex. CONCLUSIONS We found that patients with MB showed abnormal WMV and GMV, as evidenced by local changes in the brain. In addition, reduced GMV in specific parts of the brain was associated with the duration of blindness, which may indicate neuropathological mechanisms of visual loss in patients with MB.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to explore the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF; a measurement of spontaneous brain activity) in different brain regions of patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and its association with vision changes measurements. A total of 24 RVO patients (12 males and 12 females) and 24 healthy controls (HCs, 12 males and 12 females) were recruited, and they were closely matched regarding age, gender and education level (classified according to nine-year compulsory education in China and higher education, all including primary school, junior school, high school and university). ALFF values of different brain regions were gathered and analyzed, and statistical analysis software was used to explore the correlations between the average ALFF signals and clinical features. The ability of ALFF values to distinguish between subjects with RVO and HCs was analyzed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The results indicated that the subjects from the RVO group had higher ALFF values than the HCs in the posterior lobe of the left cerebellum, inferior temporal gyrus, cerebellar anterior lobe, right cerebellum posterior/anterior lobe, and lower ALFF values in the medial frontal gyrus, right precuneus, left middle frontal gyrus, right angular gyrus and right superior frontal gyrus. The ROC curve analysis of each brain region indicated that the accuracy of the area under the ROC curves regarding the prediction of RVO was excellent. The best-corrected visual acuity (VA) in the left eye was positively correlated with the ALFF value of the right precuneus (r=0.767, P=0.004) and the best-corrected VA in the right eye was positively correlated with the ALFF value of the left middle frontal gyrus (r=0.935, P<0.001). The central subfield retinal thickness in the left eye was negatively correlated with the ALFF value of the right precuneus (r=−0.895; P<0.001). The duration of RVO in the right eye was positively correlated with the ALFF value of the left middle frontal gyrus (r=0.868; P<0.001). In conclusion, the present results indicate that RVO is associated with dysfunction of diverse brain regions, including language- and movement-associated areas, which may reflect the underlying pathogenic mechanisms of RVO (trial registry no. Abstract
Objective The amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) fMRI technique was used to study the changes of spontaneous brain activity in patients with diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy (DRN), and to explore the application of ALFF technique in the potential prediction and the targeted prevention of diabetic microangiopathy. Methods Nineteen patients with diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy and 19 healthy controls (HCs) were matched for age and gender. Spontaneous cerebral activity variations were investigated using the ALFF technique. The average ALFF values of the DRN patients and the HCs were classified utilizing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results In contrast to the results in the HCs, the patients with DRN had significantly higher ALFF values in the cerebellum (bilaterally in the posterior and anterior lobes) and the left inferior temporal gyrus, but the ALFF values of the bilateral medial frontal gyrus, right superior temporal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus, left middle/inferior frontal gyrus, bilateral precuneus, and left inferior parietal lobule were lower. ROC curve analysis of each brain region showed the accuracy of AUC was excellent. However, the mean ALFF values in the different regions did not correlate with clinical performance. The subjects showed abnormal neuronal synchronization in many areas of the brain, which is consistent with cognitive and visual functional deficits. Conclusion Abnormal spontaneous activity was detected in many areas of the brain, which may provide useful information for understanding the pathology of DRN. Abnormal ALFF values of these brain regions may be of predictive value in the development of early DRN and be a targeted intervention indicator for individualized treatment of diabetic microvascular diseases.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the altered spontaneous brain activity in patients with corneal ulcer (CU) through the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) technique and the association with their visual performance. A total of 40 patients with CU and 40 healthy controls (HCs) matched for sex, age and educational level were enrolled. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was performed to examine the probands. Spontaneous cerebral activity variations were investigated using the ALFF technique. The average ALFF values of the CU patients and the HCs were classified by utilizing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Contrary to HCs, the CU patients had significantly lower ALFF values in the left cerebellar anterior lobe, right middle frontal gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus, but higher ALFF values in the right cerebellar inferior lobe, left cerebellar inferior lobe, left inferior temporal gyrus, right fusiform gyrus, left superior frontal gyrus, right angular gyrus and bilateral superior frontal gyrus. ROC curve analysis of each brain region indicated that the accuracy of ALFF value specificity between the CU and HCs of the area under the curve was perfect. In conclusion, abnormal spontaneous activities were detected in numerous brain regions of CU patients, which may provide useful information for understanding the dysfunction of CU. These activity changes in brain regions may be used as effective clinical indicators for CU.

Abstract
The study aimed to determine alterations in intrinsic brain activity in retinitis pigmentosa (RP) individuals using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF)/fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) method. Sixteen RP individuals (10 men and six women) and 14 healthy controls (HCs) (six men and eight women) closely matched in age, sex, and education were enrolled in the study. The ALFF/fALFF method was applied to compare different intrinsic brain activities between the RP group and the HC group. The relationship between the mean ALFF/fALFF signal values of different brain regions and the visual measurements in RP group was analyzed by Pearson correlation. Compared with HCs, RP individuals had significantly lower ALFF values in the bilateral lingual gyrus (LIGG)/cerebellum posterior lobe [Brodmann area (BA) 17,18], but lower fALFF values in the bilateral LIGG/cerebellum anterior lobe (BA 17,18). Meanwhile, RP individuals had significantly higher ALFF in the bilateral precuneus cortex/middle cingulate cortex (BA 7,31), as well as higher fALFF values in the left superior/middle frontal gyrus (BA 9,10) and bilateral supplementary motor area (BA 6,8) (voxel-level P<0.01, cluster-level P<0.05). Moreover, the fALFF values of the bilateral LIGG/cerebellum anterior lobe showed positive relationships with the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA)-oculus dexter (r=0.574, P=0.020) and BCVA-oculus sinister (r=0.570, P=0.021) in RP individuals; our results provide evidence that RP individuals may have impaired intrinsic brain activity in the primary visual area and the visuomotor coordination area that correlates with BCVA. Moreover, our findings indicate that reorganization of the dorsal visual stream and the parietoprefrontal pathway occurs in RP individuals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The targets of this study were to access the alternations of spontaneous brain activity in RD patients by amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method and to explore their relationships with clinical behavioral performance. METHODS A total of 20 patients with RD (6 males and 14 females), and 20 healthy controls (HCs) (6 males and 14 females) were recruited, and were matched in sex and age. All participants finished the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning. We applied the ALFF method to detect the spontaneous brain activity. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to distinguish RD Patients from HCs. RESULTS RD patients showed decreased ALFF values in the right occipital lobe and right medial frontal gyrus and increased ALFF values in the right frontal superior orbital and left inferior temporal gyrus when compared with HCs. In RD patients, we did not find any relationship between the mean ALFF values and the clinical behavioral performances. CONCLUSION The RD patients exhibited abnormal spontaneous brain activity in vision and vision related brain regions, which might explore potential pathological mechanism of acute vision loss in RD patients.

Abstract
Recent resting-state fMRI studies have revealed neuroplastic alterations after long-term training. However, the neuroplastic changes that occur in professional traditional Chinese Pingju opera actors remain unclear. Twenty professional traditional Chinese Pingju opera actors and 20 age-, sex-, and handedness-matched laymen were recruited. Resting-state fMRI was obtained by using an echo-planar imaging sequence, and two metrics, amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo), were utilized to assess spontaneous neural activity during resting state. Our results demonstrated that compared with laymen, professional traditional Chinese Pingju actors exhibited significantly decreased ALFF in the bilateral calcarine gyrus and cuneus; decreased ReHo in the bilateral superior occipital and calcarine gyri, cuneus, and right middle occipital gyrus; and increased ReHo in the left anterior insula. In addition, no significant association was found between spontaneous neural activity and Pingju opera training duration. Overall, the changes observed in spontaneous brain activity in professional traditional Chinese Pingju opera actors may indicate their superior performance of multidimensional professional skills, such as music and face perception, dancing, and emotional representation.

Abstract
This study investigated the changes in interhemispheric functional connectivity (FC) of the whole brain in open globe injury (OGI) patients, using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC), and their relationships with clinical features. Totally, 16 male and 2 female acute OGI patients and 18 sex, age, and education-matched healthy volunteers were enrolled in the study. All subjects were scanned through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves analyses had been used to identify the VMHC in these brain areas could be used as biomarkers to distinguish OGI and from healthy control (HC). The mean VMHC values in multiple brain areas and clinical OGI manifestations were evaluated with a Pearson correlation analysis. OGI patients had significantly decreased VMHC in the bilateral calcarine/lingual/cuneus (BA18, 19, 30) and middle occipital gyrus (BA18, 19). The OGI patients had abnormal interhemispheric FC in the dorsal visual pathway, which may represent the pathophysiological mechanism that underlies acute vision loss after OGI.

Abstract
Many previous studies have demonstrated that the blindness patients have has functional and anatomical abnormalities in the visual and other vision-related cortex. However, changes in the brain function in late monocular blindness (MB) at rest are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the underlying regional homogeneity (ReHo) of brain-activity abnormalities in patients with late MB and their relationship with clinical features. A total of 32 patients with MB (25 male and seven female) and 32 healthy controls (HCs) (25 male and seven female) closely matched in age, sex, and education underwent resting-state functional MRI scans. The ReHo method was used to assess local features of spontaneous brain activities. Patients with MB were distinguishable from HCs using the receiver operating characteristic curve. The relationship between the mean ReHo in brain regions and the behavioral performance was calculated using correlation analysis. Compared with HCs, patients with MB showed significantly decreased ReHo values in the right rectal gyrus, right cuneus, right anterior cingulate, and right lateral occipital cortex and increased ReHo values in the right inferior temporal gyrus, right frontal middle orbital, left posterior cingulate/precuneus, and left middle frontal gyrus. However, there was no significant relationship between the different mean ReHo values in the brain regions and the clinical features. Late MB involves abnormalities of the visual cortex and other vision-related brain regions, which may reflect brain dysfunction in these regions.

Abstract
Objective In the present study, we investigated the brain interhemispheric functional connectivity changes in left eye MB versus right eye MB patients by voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) methods. Methods A total of 31 patients with MB (15 with left eye MB and 16 with right eye MB), and 31 healthy controls (HCs) closely matched for age were recruited. All subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) examinations. The VMHC method was used to evaluate directly functional interactions between the hemispheres. A one-way ANOVA was performed to determine the regions in which the VMHC differs between the three groups. Patients with MB were distinguished from HCs by a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The relationships between the mean VMHC signal values in many brain regions and clinical features in MB patients were calculated by pearson correlation analysis. Results Compared with HCs, MB patients had significantly decreased VMHC values in the cuneus/calcarine/lingual gyrus. Furthermore, left eye MB showed decreased VMHC values in the cuneus/calcarine/lingual gyrus and showed increased VMHC values in the insula and middle frontal gyrus compared with HC. In addition, right eye MB showed decreased VMHC values in the cuneus/calcarine/lingual gyrus, primary motor cortex (M1)/primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and superior parietal lobule. Conclusion MB subjects showed abnormal brain interhemispheric functional connectivity in visual pathways. Furthermore, different patterns of brain interhemispheric functional connectivity occurred in the left eye and right eye MB. These VMHC values provide much useful information to explain the neural mechanism changes in MB.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many previous studies have reported that pain symptoms can lead to significant brain function and anatomical changes, whereas the intrinsic brain activity changes in acute eye pain (EP) patients remain unknown. Using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) method, this study aimed to evaluate the spontaneous brain activity alterations and their relationships with clinical features in acute EP patients. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS A total of 20 patients with EP (15 males and 5 females) and 20 healthy controls (HCs; 15 males and 5 females) closely matched in age, sex, and education underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging scans. The ALFF method was applied to assess spontaneous brain activity changes. The ALFF values of the EP patients were distinguished from those of the HCs using a receiver operating characteristic curve. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to investigate the relationships between the mean ALFF signal values from many brain regions and the clinical features in EP patients. RESULTS Compared with the HCs, acute EP patients had significantly lower ALFF in the left and right precentral/postcentral gyrus and left precuneus. In contrast, acute EP patients showed higher ALFF values in the right and left parahippocampal gyri and left caudate. However, no relationship was observed between the mean ALFF signal values from the different areas and clinical manifestations in the acute EP patients. CONCLUSION We demonstrated that acute EP patients showed abnormal intrinsic brain activities in the precentral/postcentral gyrus and limbic system, which might provide useful information for explaining neural mechanisms in EP patients.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the underlying functional network brain-activity changes in patients with adult comitant exotropia strabismus (CES) and the relationship with clinical features using the voxel-wise degree centrality (DC) method. Methods A total of 30 patients with CES (17 men, 13 women), and 30 healthy controls (HCs; 17 men, 13 women) matched in age, sex, and education level participated in the study. DC was used to evaluate spontaneous brain activity. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to distinguish CESs from HCs. The relationship between mean DC values in various brain regions and behavioral performance was examined with correlation analysis. Results Compared with HCs, CES patients exhibited decreased DC values in the right cerebellum posterior lobe, right inferior frontal gyrus, right middle frontal gyrus and right superior parietal lobule/primary somatosensory cortex (S1), and increased DC values in the right superior temporal gyrus, bilateral anterior cingulate, right superior temporal gyrus, and left inferior parietal lobule. However, there was no correlation between mean DC values and behavioral performance in any brain regions. Conclusions Adult comitant exotropia strabismus is associated with abnormal brain network activity in various brain regions, possibly reflecting the pathological mechanisms of ocular motility disorders in CES.
