Calcium and vitamin D intake by postmenopausal women with osteoporosis in Spain: an observational calcium and vitamin D intake (CaVIT) study

The Prevalence of Vitamin D and Calcium Supplement use and Association with Serum 25-Hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) and Demographic and Socioeconomic Variables in Iranian Elderly

Aims:

The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D and calcium supplement use, and association with serum 25-hydroxy-vitamin D(25(OH)D) and demographic and socioeconomic variables in Iranian elderly.

Settings and Design:

This cross-sectional study was conducted in health centers of Tehran, capital of Iran.

Methods:

A total of 600 men and women were recruited using a two-stage cluster sampling method from 60 health centers. Participant's inclusion criteria included enrolling older adults over 60 years old who able to answer questions. We used valid and reliable questionnaires to record dietary intake of vitamin D and calcium. Any dietary supplements which included vitamin D/calcium were recorded. 25(OH)D level was measured. Participants were categorized as supplement users if they had taken supplements during last month.

Results:

The mean age of participants was 67.16 ± 6.07 years. Vitamin D supplements were used more often by females (OR = 11.89, 95% confidence interval (CI): 4.82–29.34), high educated subjects (OR = 3.49, 95% CI: 1.45–8.44), participants who did more physical activities (OR = 2.75, 95% CI: 1.52–5.00), and subjects who took antiosteoporosis medications (OR = 6.90, 95% CI: 2.84‑16.78). Calcium supplements were used more often by females (OR = 13.05, 95% CI: 5.19–32.81), more physical activities participants (OR = 2.17, 95% CI: 1.20–3.92), and antiosteoporosis users (OR = 8.31, 95% CI: 3.43–20.14). Significant positive associations were seen between 25(OH) D levels and osteoporosis (P = 0.020), vitamin D supplement use (P < 0.0001), and sun exposure (P = 0.093).

Conclusion:

In this population of Tehranian adults, the prevalence of vitamin D and calcium supplement use may be attributed to educational level and underlying disease. Vitamin D supplementation, osteoporosis, and sun exposure were the strong predictors of vitamin D status.

Serum Sema4D levels are associated with lumbar spine bone mineral density and bone turnover markers in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis

To investigate the association of serum semaphorin 4D (Sema4D) levels with lumbar spine bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover markers in patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis (PO). Lumbar spine BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry in 257 PO patients (aged from 50 to 75) and 90 healthy controls (aged from 51 to 83). Serum Sema4D, BAP, BGP and TRACP-5b levels were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Serum cross linked N-telopeptides of type I (NTX), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and N-mid fragment of osteocalcin (N-MID-OT) levels were measured using automated electrochemiluminescence system. Sema4D level was significantly higher in PO women compared to healthy controls (1.40±0.33 vs. 0.58±0.18 μg/L, P=0.006). Sema4D level was positively correlated with serumTRACP-5b and NTX levels and negatively correlated with lumbar spine BMD and serum BAP and BGP levels. There were no correlations between Sema4D level and age, body mass index, and serum 25(OH)D and N-MID-OT levels. Lumbar spine BMD (β=-0.354, P<0.001) and serum BAP level (β=0.127, P=0.019) were independent predictors of serum Sema4D level in PO patients. Sema4D may be involved in the pathogenesis of PO and play a critical role in bone formation and resorption. Sema4D may represent a novel therapeutic target for treatment of PO and function as a predictive indicator of PO.

Calcium and dairy products consumption and association with total hip bone mineral density in women from kosovo

Background and objective:

There is paucity of evidence in southeastern Europe and Kosovo regarding dairy products consumption and association with bone mineral density (BMD). Therefore, the objective of present study was to assess calcium intake and dairy products consumption and to investigate relationship with total hip BMD in a Kosovo women sample.

Methods:

This cross-sectional study included a sample of 185 women divided into respective groups according to total hip BMD. All the study participants completed a food frequency questionnaire and underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) to estimate BMD. Nonparametric tests were performed to compare characteristics of the groups.

Results:

The average dietary calcium intake was 818.41 mg/day. Only 16.75% of the subjects met calcium recommended dietary reference intakes (DRIs). There were no significant differences between low BMD group and normal BMD group regarding average dietary calcium intake, but it was significantly higher in BMDT3 subgroup than in BMDT2 and BMDT1 subgroups.

Conclusions:

The results of this study demonstrate significant relationship of daily dietary calcium intake with upper BMD tertile. Further initiatives are warranted from this study to highlight the importance of nutrition education.

The role of healthy diet in the prevention of osteoporosis in perimenopausal period

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the study was to assess the diet for its effect on normal bone mineralization and qualitative analysis of dietary supplements used in the prevention of osteoporosis.

METHODS

Research data were acquired based on a questionnaire developed by the author. A 24-hour diet recall method was used with the involvement of Dieta 5.0 software developed by the National Food and Nutrition Institute in Warsaw in Poland. The second part of the study involved an analysis of the most popular dietary supplements available over the counter. Complexometric titration was used to separate and identify calcium.

RESULTS

The results of a 24-hour diet recall indicate that 47% of the respondents consumed 550-750 mg of calcium daily, and only 21% of the subjects consumed more than 1200 mg of calcium every day. The results give cause for concern: none of the analyzed diets supplied the recommended daily amounts of vitamin D, and only 29% of the respondents admitted taking vitamin D supplements. The results of the survey indicate that consumers have insufficient knowledge about lifestyle diseases, including osteoporosis.

CONCLUSION

Diet of large part of society is not properly balanced which can cause abnormalities in achieving proper bone mineralization. Long-term deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D in daily diet are the cause for taking dietary supplements. Unfortunately, some preparations on the market do not have adequate storage. It happens that these preparations are poorly absorbed and the amount of active compound is too low. Changes in the nutritional regimen are required already during childhood because nutritional mistakes are the main cause of diet-related diseases in adulthood.
