Resveratrol Protects Osteoblasts Against Dexamethasone-Induced Cytotoxicity Through Activation of AMP-Activated Protein Kinase

SIRT3: A Potential Target of Different Types of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis (OP) is a common age-related disease. OP is mainly a decrease in bone density and mass caused by the destruction of bone microstructure, which leads to an increase in bone fragility. SIRT3 is a mitochondrial deacetylase that plays critical roles in mitochondrial homeostasis, metabolic regulation, gene transcription, stress response, and gene stability. Studies have shown that the higher expression levels of SIRT3 are associated with decreased levels of oxidative stress in the body and may play important roles in the prevention of age-related diseases. SIRTs can enhance the osteogenic potential and osteoblastic activity of bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells not only by enhancing PGC-1α, FOXO3, SOD2, and oxidative phosphorylation, but also by anti-aging and reducing mitochondrial autophagy. SIRT3 is able to upregulate antioxidant enzymes to exert an inhibitory effect on osteoclasts, however, it has been shown that the inflammatory cascade response can in turn increase SIRT3 and inhibit osteoclast differentiation through the AMPK-PGC-1β pathway. SIRT3 plays an important role in different types of osteoporosis by affecting osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and bone marrow mesenchymal cells. In this review, we discuss the classification and physiological functions of SIRTs, the effects of SIRT3 on OCs osteoblasts, and BMSCs, and the roles and mechanisms of SIRT3 in different types of OP, such as diabetic OP, glucocorticoid-induced OP, postmenopausal OP, and senile OP.

Photodynamic Therapy With Resveratrol and an Nd:YAG Laser for Enterococcus faecalis Elimination

BACKGROUND/AIM

Enterococcus faecalis is the leading cause of endodontic treatment failures. Despite various conventional disinfection approaches, microorganisms often persist in root canals. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an adjunct antimicrobial strategy employing a nontoxic photosensitizer (PS) and light source. This study evaluated the antimicrobial effect of PDT using an Nd:YAG laser and resveratrol (RSV) with or without pigment, and confirmed that RSV is nontoxic as a PS.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We employed laser irradiation at a 3W output power, using RSV and red pigment as the PS, on an E. faecalis bacterial solution. Subsequently, colony-forming units were quantified. The impact of RSV on osteoblasts was measured using an MTT assay.

RESULTS

E. faecalis counts declined after laser irradiation. The combined application of laser irradiation with RSV, red pigment, or both showed a reduction compared to no irradiation and control groups without RSV and red pigment. The 50% cytotoxic concentration against osteoblast cells from mice incubated with RSV for 48 h was 162 μM. The value with RSV and laser was 201 μM and that with RSV and red pigment was 199 μM. The value with RSV, laser and red pigment was 357 μM.

CONCLUSION

The combination of Nd:YAG laser irradiation and RSV as the PS with pigment was efficacious for E. faecalis elimination without inducing any toxic effects on osteoblasts. This combination holds potential as a root canal irrigation strategy.

Dexamethasone-induced mitochondrial ROS-mediated inhibition of AMPK activity facilitates osteoblast necroptosis

Long-term or high-dose glucocorticoid use can lead to serious orthopedic complications, including femoral head necrosis. Both basic and clinical studies have shown that high doses dexamethasone (Dex) can directly induce osteoblasts death. This study investigated the mechanism underlying Dex induced osteoblast death. In this study, we showed that Dex induces osteoblast necroptosis, rather than apoptosis, through the inhibition of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activity. We also demonstrated that inactivation of AMPK-mediated necroptosis is through receptor-interacting protein kinase 3 (RIP3), but not RIP1. Furthermore, we found that Dex-induced necroptosis is dependent on mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) following with directly activation of RIP1 and inactivation of AMPK. These findings provide new insights into the mechanism of Dex-induced osteoblast death and may have implications for the development of new therapies for osteoporosis and other bone-related diseases.

Emerging Effects of Resveratrol Derivatives in Cells Involved in Oral Wound Healing: A Preliminary Study

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in finding new approaches to manage oral wound healing. Although resveratrol (RSV) exhibited many biological properties, such as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, its use as a drug is limited by unfavorable bioavailability. This study aimed to investigate a series of RSV derivatives (1a-j) with better pharmacokinetic profiles. At first, their cytocompatibility at different concentrations was tested on gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Among them, derivatives 1d and 1h significantly increased cell viability compared to the reference compound RSV. Thus, 1d and 1h were investigated for cytotoxicity, proliferation, and gene expression in HGFs, endothelial cells (HUVECs), and oral osteoblasts (HOBs), which are the main cells involved in oral wound healing. For HUVECs and HGFs, the morphology was also evaluated, while for HOBs ALP and mineralization were observed. The results showed that both 1d and 1h did not exert negative effects on cell viability, and at a lower concentration (5 µM) both even significantly enhanced the proliferative rate, compared to RSV. The morphology observations pointed out that the density of HUVECs and HGFs was promoted by 1d and 1h (5 µM) and mineralization was promoted in HOBs. Moreover, 1d and 1h (5 µM) induced a higher eNOS mRNA level in HUVECs, higher COL1 mRNA in HGFs, and higher OCN in HOBs, compared to RSV. The appreciable physicochemical properties and good enzymatic and chemical stability of 1d and 1h, along with their promising biological properties, provide the scientific basis for further studies leading to the development of RSV-based agents useful in oral tissue repair.

Dexamethasone as an anti-cancer or hepatotoxic

The linkage between inflammation and oxidative stress in liver damage has been proven and is undeniable; dexamethasone with some antioxidants can reduce the toxicity of liver tissue. Due to the importance of cancer treatment, glucocorticoids' synergistic effect in inhibiting cancer cell growth is also investigated. Dexamethasone alone and combined with etoposide were tested at concentrations of 1, 5, and 10 μM to evaluate the potency of dexamethasone in inhibiting the growth of A549 cells using oxidative stress factors and DNA damage. Also, intraperitoneal injection of dexamethasone in rats was used to induce liver toxicity. Coenzyme Q10 at different concentrations (1, 10, and 50 mg/kg) was used as an antioxidant to assess the oxidative stress factors and measure Caspase-3 activity. The results showed that dexamethasone combined with etoposide could significantly inhibit the growth of cancer cells and induce apoptosis. Treatment of A549 cells using dexamethasone also inhibits cancer cells' growth by inducing oxidative stress and DNA damage. Dexamethasone also, by inducing oxidative stress and activation of caspase 3, ultimately causes hepatotoxicity. Treatment with different concentrations of CoQ10 showed improved mitochondrial function, antioxidant defense, and liver enzyme. The best effect of coenzyme Q10 on dexamethasone-induced hepatotoxicity is 50 mg/kg. As a result, dexamethasone (alone and combined with etoposide) has an anti-cancer effect by damaging DNA and inducing oxidative stress. Also, CoQ10 has antioxidant effects against dexamethasone-induced hepatotoxicity by improving mitochondrial function and reducing caspase-3 activity.

Efficacy and safety of dietary polyphenols in rheumatoid arthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 47 randomized controlled trials

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate safety and efficacy of dietary polyphenols in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

METHODS

CNKI, Pubmed, Cochrane library, Embase were searched to collect randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of dietary polyphenols in the treatment of RA. The databases were searched from the time of their establishment to November 8nd, 2022. After 2 reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies, Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan5.4 software.

RESULTS

A total of 49 records (47 RCTs) were finally included, involving 3852 participants and 15 types of dietary polyphenols (Cinnamon extract, Cranberry extract, Crocus sativus L. extract, Curcumin, Garlic extract, Ginger extract, Hesperidin, Olive oil, Pomegranate extract, Puerarin, Quercetin, Resveratrol, Sesamin, Tea polyphenols, Total glucosides of paeony). Pomegranate extract, Resveratrol, Garlic extract, Puerarin, Hesperidin, Ginger extract, Cinnamon extract, Sesamin only involve in 1 RCT. Cranberry extract, Crocus sativus L. extract, Olive oil, Quercetin, Tea polyphenols involve in 2 RCTs. Total glucosides of paeony and Curcumin involve in more than 3 RCTs. These RCTs showed that these dietary polyphenols could improve disease activity score for 28 joints (DAS28), inflammation levels or oxidative stress levels in RA. The addition of dietary polyphenols did not increase adverse events.

CONCLUSION

Dietary polyphenols may improve DAS28, reduce C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and improve oxidative stress, etc. However, more RCTs are needed to verify or modify the efficacy and safety of dietary polyphenols.

The Utilization of Physiologically Active Molecular Components of Grape Seeds and Grape Marc

Nutritional interventions may highly contribute to the maintenance or restoration of human health. Grapes (Vitis vinifera) are one of the oldest known beneficial nutritional components of the human diet. Their high polyphenol content has been proven to enhance human health beyond doubt in statistics-based public health studies, especially in the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer. The current review concentrates on presenting and classifying polyphenol bioactive molecules (resveratrol, quercetin, catechin/epicatechin, etc.) available in high quantities in Vitis vinifera grapes or their byproducts. The molecular pathways and cellular signaling cascades involved in the effects of these polyphenol molecules are also presented in this review, which summarizes currently available in vitro and in vivo experimental literature data on their biological activities mostly in easily accessible tabular form. New molecules for different therapeutic purposes can also be synthesized based on existing polyphenol compound classes available in high quantities in grape, wine, and grape marc. Therefore an overview of these molecular structures is provided. Novel possibilities as dendrimer nanobioconjugates are reviewed, too. Currently available in vitro and in vivo experimental literature data on polyphenol biological activities are presented in easily accessible tabular form. The scope of the review details the antidiabetic, anticarcinogenic, antiviral, vasoprotective, and neuroprotective roles of grape-origin flavonoids. The novelty of the study lies in the description of the processing of agricultural by-products (grape seeds and skins) of industrial relevance, and the detailed description of the molecular mechanisms of action. In addition, the review of the clinical therapeutic applications of polyphenols is unique as no summary study has yet been done.

Resveratrol Synergistically Promotes BMP9-Induced Osteogenic Differentiation of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Background. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) differentiate into osteocytes, adipocytes, and chondrocytes. Resveratrol and bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9) are known osteogenic induction factors of MSCs, but the effect of both resveratrol and BMP9 on osteogenesis is unknown. Herein, we explored whether resveratrol cooperates with BMP9 to improve osteogenic induction. Methods. The osteogenic induction of resveratrol and BMP9 on C3H10T1/2 cells was evaluated by detecting the staining and activity of the early osteogenic marker alkaline phosphatase (ALP). In addition, the late osteogenic effect was measured by the mRNA and protein levels of osteogenic markers, such as osteopontin (OPN) and osteocalcin (OCN). To assess the bone formation function of resveratrol plus BMP9 in vivo, we transplanted BMP9-infected C3H10T1/2 cells into nude mice followed by intragastric injection of resveratrol. Western blot (WB) analysis was utilized to elucidate the mechanism of resveratrol plus BMP9. Results. Resveratrol not only enhanced osteogenic induction alone but also improved BMP9-induced ALP at 3, 5, and 7 d postinduction. Both the early osteogenic markers (ALP, Runx2, and SP7) and the late osteogenic markers (OPN and OCN) were significantly increased when resveratrol was combined with BMP9. The fetal limb explant culture further verified these results. The in vivo bone formation experiment, which involved transplanting BMP9-overexpressing C3H10T1/2 cells into nude mice, also confirmed that resveratrol synergistically enhanced the BMP9-induced bone formation function. Resveratrol phosphorylated adenosine monophosphate- (AMP-) activated protein kinase (AMPK) and stimulated autophagy, but these effects were abolished by inhibiting AMPK and Beclin1 using an inhibitor or siRNA. Conclusions. Resveratrol combined with BMP9 significantly improves the osteogenic induction of C3H10T1/2 cells by activating AMPK and autophagy.

Anti-Cancer Effects of Dietary Polyphenols via ROS-Mediated Pathway with Their Modulation of MicroRNAs

Consumption of coffee, tea, wine, curry, and soybeans has been linked to a lower risk of cancer in epidemiological studies. Several cell-based and animal studies have shown that dietary polyphenols like chlorogenic acid, curcumin, epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate, genistein, quercetin and resveratrol play a major role in these anticancer effects. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the anticancer effects of polyphenols. Depending on the cellular microenvironment, these polyphenols can exert double-faced actions as either an antioxidant or a prooxidant, and one of the representative anticancer mechanisms is a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated mechanism. These polyphenols can also influence microRNA (miR) expression. In general, they can modulate the expression/activity of the constituent molecules in ROS-mediated anticancer pathways by increasing the expression of tumor-suppressive miRs and decreasing the expression of oncogenic miRs. Thus, miR modulation may enhance the anticancer effects of polyphenols through the ROS-mediated pathways in an additive or synergistic manner. More precise human clinical studies on the effects of dietary polyphenols on miR expression will provide convincing evidence of the preventive roles of dietary polyphenols in cancer and other diseases.

Lactate metabolism in rheumatoid arthritis: Pathogenic mechanisms and therapeutic intervention with natural compounds

BACKGROUND

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common chronic and systemic autoimmune disease characterized by persistent inflammation and hyperplasia of the synovial membrane, the degradation of cartilage, and the erosion of bones in diarthrodial joints. The inflamed joints of patients with RA have been recognized to be a site of hypoxic microenvironment which results in an imbalance of lactate metabolism and the accumulation of lactate. Lactate is no longer considered solely a metabolic waste product of glycolysis, but also a combustion aid in the progression of RA from the early stages of inflammation to the late stages of bone destruction.

PURPOSE

To review the pathogenic mechanisms of lactate metabolism in RA and investigate the potential of natural compounds for treating RA linked to the regulation of imbalance in lactate metabolism.

METHODS

Research advances in our understanding of lactate metabolism in the pathogenesis of RA and novel pharmacological approaches of natural compounds by targeting lactate metabolic signaling were comprehensively reviewed and deeply discussed.

RESULTS

Lactate produced by RA synovial fibroblasts (RASFs) acts on targeted cells such as T cells, macrophages, dendritic cells and osteoclasts, and affects their differentiation, activation and function to accelerate the development of RA. Many natural compounds show therapeutic potential for RA by regulating glycolytic rate-limiting enzymes to limit lactate production, and affecting monocarboxylate transporter and acetyl-CoA carboxylase to inhibit lactate transport and conversion.

CONCLUSION

Regulation of imbalance in lactate metabolism offers novel therapeutic approaches for RA, and natural compounds capable of targeting lactate metabolic signaling constitute potential candidates for development of drugs RA.

Hesperidin Ameliorates Dexamethasone-Induced Osteoporosis by Inhibiting p53

Osteoporosis is one of the most frequent skeletal disorders and a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the expanding aging population. Evidence suggests that hesperidin may have a therapeutic impact on osteoporosis. Nevertheless, little is known about the role of hesperidin in the development of osteoporosis. Bioinformatics analyses were carried out to explore the functions and possible molecular mechanisms by which hesperidin regulates osteogenic differentiation. In the present study, we screened and harvested 12 KEGG pathways that were shared by hesperidin-targeted genes and osteoporosis. The p53 signaling pathway was considered to be a key mechanism. Our in vitro results showed that hesperidin partially reversed dexamethasone-induced inhibition of osteogenic differentiation by suppressing the activation of p53, and suggest that hesperidin may be a promising candidate for the treatment against dexamethasone-induced osteoporosis.

Pterostilbene in Combination With Mitochondrial Cofactors Improve Mitochondrial Function in Cellular Models of Mitochondrial Diseases

Mitochondrial diseases are genetic disorders caused by mutations in genes in the nuclear DNA (nDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that encode mitochondrial structural or functional proteins. Although considered “rare” due to their low incidence, such diseases affect thousands of patients’ lives worldwide. Despite intensive research efforts, most mitochondrial diseases are still incurable. Recent studies have proposed the modulation of cellular compensatory pathways such as mitophagy, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation or the mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPR^mt) as novel therapeutic approaches for the treatment of these pathologies. UPR^mt is an intracellular compensatory pathway that signals mitochondrial stress to the nucleus for the activation of mitochondrial proteostasis mechanisms including chaperones, proteases and antioxidants. In this work a potentially beneficial molecule, pterostilbene (a resveratrol analogue), was identified as mitochondrial booster in drug screenings. The positive effects of pterostilbene were significantly increased in combination with a mitochondrial cocktail (CoC3) consisting of: pterostilbene, nicotinamide, riboflavin, thiamine, biotin, lipoic acid and l-carnitine. CoC3 increases sirtuins’ activity and UPR^mt activation, thus improving pathological alterations in mutant fibroblasts and induced neurons.

Involvement of microRNA modifications in anticancer effects of major polyphenols from green tea, coffee, wine, and curry

Epidemiological studies have shown that consumption of green tea, coffee, wine, and curry may contribute to a reduced risk of various cancers. However, there are some cancer site-specific differences in their effects; for example, the consumption of tea or wine may reduce bladder cancer risk, whereas coffee consumption may increase the risk. Animal and cell-based experiments have been used to elucidate the anticancer mechanisms of these compounds, with reactive oxygen species (ROS)-based mechanisms emerging as likely candidates. Chlorogenic acid (CGA), curcumin (CUR), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and resveratrol (RSV) can act as antioxidants that activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) to downregulate ROS, and as prooxidants to generate ROS, leading to the downregulation of NF-κB. Polyphenols can modulate miRNA (miR) expression, with these dietary polyphenols shown to downregulate tumor-promoting miR-21. CUR, EGCG, and RSV can upregulate tumor-suppressing miR-16, 34a, 145, and 200c, but downregulate tumor-promoting miR-25a. CGA, EGCG, and RSV downregulate tumor-suppressing miR-20a, 93, and 106b. The effects of miRs may combine with ROS-mediated pathways, enhancing the anticancer effects of these polyphenols. More precise analysis is needed to determine how the different modulations of miRs by polyphenols relate to the cancer site-specific differences found in epidemiological studies related to the consumption of foods containing these polyphenols.

Redox Properties of 3-Iodothyronamine (T1AM) and 3-Iodothyroacetic Acid (TA1)

3-iodothyronamine (T1AM) and 3-iodothyroacetic acid (TA1) are thyroid-hormone-related compounds endowed with pharmacological activity through mechanisms that remain elusive. Some evidence suggests that they may have redox features. We assessed the chemical activity of T1AM and TA1 at pro-oxidant conditions. Further, in the cell model consisting of brown adipocytes (BAs) differentiated for 6 days in the absence (M cells) or in the presence of 20 nM T1AM (M + T1AM cells), characterized by pro-oxidant metabolism, or TA1 (M + TA1 cells), we investigated the expression/activity levels of pro- and anti-oxidant proteins, including UCP-1, sirtuin-1 (SIRT1), mitochondrial monoamine (MAO-A and MAO-B), semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO), and reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent lipoperoxidation. T1AM and TA1 showed in-vitro antioxidant and superoxide scavenging properties, while only TA1 acted as a hydroxyl radical scavenger. M + T1AM cells showed higher lipoperoxidation levels and reduced SIRT1 expression and activity, similar MAO-A, but higher MAO-B activity in terms of M cells. Instead, the M + TA1 cells exhibited increased levels of SIRT1 protein and activity and significantly lower UCP-1, MAO-A, MAO-B, and SSAO in comparison with the M cells, and did not show signs of lipoperoxidation. Our results suggest that SIRT1 is the mediator of T1AM and TA1 pro-or anti-oxidant effects as a result of ROS intracellular levels, including the hydroxyl radical. Here, we provide evidence indicating that T1AM and TA1 administration impacts on the redox status of a biological system, a feature that indicates the novel mechanism of action of these two thyroid-hormone-related compounds.

Re-appraising the role of flavonols, flavones and flavonones on osteoblasts and osteoclasts- A review on its molecular mode of action

Bone disorders have become a global concern illustrated with decreased bone mineral density and disruption in microarchitecture of natural bone tissue organization. Natural compounds that promote bone health by augmenting osteoblast functions and suppressing osteoclast functions has gained much attention and offer greater therapeutic value compared to conventional therapies. Amongst several plant-based molecules, flavonoids act as a major combatant in promoting bone health through their multi-faceted biological activities such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and osteogenic properties. They protect bone loss by regulating the signalling cascades involved in osteoblast and osteoclast functions. Flavonoids augment osteoblastogenesis and inhibits osteoclastogenesis through their modulation of various signalling pathways. This review discusses the role of various flavonoids and their molecular mechanisms involved in maintaining bone health by regulating osteoblast and osteoclast functions.

The Role of SIRT3 in the Osteoporosis

SIRT3 is an NAD⁺-dependent deacetylase in the mitochondria with an extensive ability to regulate mitochondrial morphology and function. It has been reported that SIRT3 participates in the occurrence and development of many aging-related diseases. Osteoporosis is a common aging-related disease characterized by decreased bone mass and fragility fractures, which has caused a huge burden on society. Current research shows that SIRT3 is involved in the physiological processes of senescence of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), differentiation of BMSCs and osteoclasts. However, the specific effects and mechanisms of SIRT3 in osteoporosis are not clear. In the current review, we elaborated on the physiological functions of SIRT3, the cell types involved in bone remodeling, and the role of SIRT3 in osteoporosis. Furthermore, it also provided a theoretical basis for SIRT3 as a therapeutic target for osteoporosis.

Dermal Olfactory Receptor OR51B5 Is Essential for Survival and Collagen Synthesis in Human Dermal Fibroblast (Hs68 Cells)

Skin dermis comprises extracellular matrix components, mainly collagen fibers. A decrease in collagen synthesis caused by several factors, including ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and stress, eventually causes extrinsic skin aging. Olfactory receptors (ORs) were initially considered to be specifically expressed in nasal tissue, but several ORs have been reported to be present in other tissues, and their biological roles have recently received increasing attention. In this study, we aimed to characterize the role of ORs in cell survival and collagen synthesis in dermal fibroblasts. We confirmed that UVB irradiation and dexamethasone exposure significantly decreased cell survival and collagen synthesis in Hs68 dermal fibroblasts. Moreover, we demonstrated that the mRNA expression of 10 ORs detectable in Hs68 cells was significantly downregulated in aged conditions compared with that in normal conditions. Thereafter, by individual knockdown of the 10 candidate ORs, we identified that only OR51B5 knockdown leads to a reduction of cell survival and collagen synthesis. OR51B5 knockdown decreased cAMP levels and dampened the downstream protein kinase A/cAMP-response element binding protein pathway, downregulating the survival- and collagen synthesis-related genes in the dermal fibroblasts. Therefore, OR51B5 may be an interesting candidate that plays a role in cell survival and collagen synthesis.

The Beneficial Effects of Principal Polyphenols from Green Tea, Coffee, Wine, and Curry on Obesity

Several epidemiological studies and clinical trials have reported the beneficial effects of green tea, coffee, wine, and curry on human health, with its anti-obesity, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and neuroprotective properties. These effects, which have been supported using cell-based and animal studies, are mainly attributed to epigallocatechin gallate found in green tea, chlorogenic acid in coffee, resveratrol in wine, and curcumin in curry. Polyphenols are proposed to function via various mechanisms, the most important of which is related to reactive oxygen species (ROS). These polyphenols exert conflicting dual actions as anti- and pro-oxidants. Their anti-oxidative actions help scavenge ROS and downregulate nuclear factor-κB to produce favorable anti-inflammatory effects. Meanwhile, pro-oxidant actions appear to promote ROS generation leading to the activation of 5′-AMP-activated protein kinase, which modulates different enzymes and factors with health beneficial roles. Currently, it remains unclear how these polyphenols exert either pro- or anti-oxidant effects. Similarly, several human studies showed no beneficial effects of these foods, and, by extension polyphenols, on obesity. These inconsistencies may be attributed to different confounding study factors. Thus, this review provides a state-of-the-art update on these foods and their principal polyphenol components, with an assumption that it prevents obesity.
