Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to investigate the impact of neuropsychological functions on self-care/self-management in middle-aged individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). AREAS COVERED A comprehensive literature search was conducted from January 2012 to April 2023 across multiple databases. Ten articles were included in the scoping review, and 3 articles were included in the meta-analysis. The findings consistently indicated an association between reduced neuropsychological functions and poor self-care/self-management in this population. Memory functions, executive functions, and other domains were found to be significantly related to self-care/self-management, including diet management, exercise, blood glucose monitoring, and foot care. EXPERT OPINION This study highlights the importance of considering neuropsychological factors in understanding and improving diabetes management outcomes. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive neuropsychological assessments and the development of targeted interventions to address specific vulnerable domains. Future research should focus on elucidating underlying mechanisms, addressing methodological inconsistencies, and exploring the effectiveness of interventions targeting neuropsychological impairments. Incorporating technology and personalized approaches into diabetes management can enhance self-care/self-management and clinical outcomes in individuals with T2DM.

Cognitive Function and Self-Management Behaviors in Older Adults With Type 2 Diabetes. Nurs Res 2023; 72:38-48. Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is strongly associated with cognitive impairment. Decreased cognitive function could affect daily self-management behaviors critical for people with T2D. Executive function is significant for daily self-management, and decreased subjective cognitive function could be an early indicator of poor daily self-management. However, little is known about whether executive or subjective cognitive function affects daily self-management behaviors in older adults. OBJECTIVES We investigated the effect of executive function or subjective cognitive function on daily self-management behaviors (diet, glucose management, physical activity, and physician contact) in older adults with T2D. METHODS We used a cross-sectional, observational design with convenience sampling of 84 adults aged ≥60 years with T2D. Telephone-administered cognitive function tests measured participants' overall cognitive and executive function levels. Subjective cognitive function, diabetes self-management, and covariates, including demographic information (age, gender, race/ethnicity, and level of education), body mass index, depressive symptoms, and diabetes duration, were assessed using online surveys. Data were analyzed using bivariate correlation and backward stepwise regression. RESULTS The mean age of the sample was 68.46 ± 5.41 years. Participants were predominantly female and White, and the majority had normal cognitive function. Controlling for demographics, body mass index, depressive symptoms, and diabetes duration, a decrease in executive function indicated by a greater number of errors made during the telephone-administered Oral Trail Making Test Part B relative to the sample was associated with poorer adherence to physician contact behaviors. Subjective cognitive function was not associated with any self-management behaviors. DISCUSSION A reduction in executive function was associated with poorer adherence to physician contact behaviors in older adults with T2D and normal cognitive function; lack of adherence to physician contact behaviors could be an early indicator of declining cognitive function. Difficulties or changes in routine diabetes self-management behaviors should be closely monitored in older adults. Cognitive assessment should be followed when needed.

Abstract
PURPOSE Poor self-care behavior and depression are associated with worse glycemic control, but the relationship between these variables is poorly reported. The present study aimed to describe self-care behaviors and explore the association between depression, self-care and glycemic control in people with type 2 diabetes in an Arab population. PATIENTS AND METHODS This study recruited 446 patients with type-2 diabetes from an outpatient clinic in Kuwait and completed assessments of diabetes self-care using the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) questionnaire and depression using the Patients Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) scales. Multiple linear regression models were used to determine the associations between depression, self-care behaviors and glycemic control. RESULTS Self-care behaviors were highest for medication taking (92.9%), an average for foot care (61.4%), blood glucose testing (60%) and healthy diet (55.7%), and lowest for exercise (27.1%). Depression, poor self-care activities and poor HbA1c levels were inter-correlated in univariate analysis (p< 0.03). In regression analysis, following healthful eating (B= -0.27, p< 0.001), general eating plan (B= -0.21, p= 0.01), more space carbohydrates evenly throughout the day (B= - 0.17, p= 0.03) and exercise at least 30 minutes (B= -0.17, p= 0.02) behaviors were associated with better HbA1c levels. However, depression was associated with poor scores of following a general eating plan (B= -0.20, p= 0.03), space carbohydrates evenly throughout the day (B= -0.21, p= 0.05), and exercising at least 30 minutes (B= -0.24, p= 0.03) behaviors. Depression scores were also associated with poor HbA1c levels (B= 0.32, p= 0.03). However, this association no longer persists after mutual adjustment with following a healthy diet (B= 0.14, p= 0.38) and exercise (B = 0.26, p = 0.08) behaviors. CONCLUSION Self-care activity was less than fifty percent in people with type 2 diabetes and higher activity was associated with better glycemic control. However, depression adversely affects self-care behaviors. To maintain and achieve glycemic control, diabetes educators might motivate people with type 2 diabetes to enhance their self-care activities, particularly those with depression symptoms and poor compliance with self-care activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As a group of environmental pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) may be neurotoxic,especially in high-exposure occupational populations. However, the effect of PAHs on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is still unclear. OBJECTIVE We aimed to investigate the relationship between PAH metabolites and MCI and to explore whether plasma p-tau231 can be used as a potential biomarker to reflect MCI in coke oven workers. METHOD A total of 330 workers were recruited from a coke oven plant as the exposure group, and 234 workers were recruited from a water treatment plant as the control group. The concentrations of eleven PAH metabolites and plasma p-tau231 were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and ELISA. Cognitive function was measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) questionnaire. A multivariate logistic regression model and multiple linear regression model were used to analyze the associations of urinary PAH metabolites with the detection rate of MCI, MoCA scores and plasma p-tau231. The dose-response relationships were evaluated using restricted cubic spline models. RESULTS We found 146 MCI-positive workers in coke oven plant (44.24%), and 69 MCI-positive workers in water treatment plant (29.49%). In addition, the urinary sum of PAH metabolites (Ʃ-OH PAHs) was significantly associated with MCI (OR, 1.371; 95% CI:1.102-1.705). Each one-unit increase in ln-transformed Ʃ-OH PAHs was associated with a 0.429 decrease in the sum of MoCA, a 0.281 reduction in the visuospatial/executive function and a 9.416 increase in the level of plasma P-Tau231. We found a negative association between plasma P-Tau231 and visuospatial/executive function (β = -0.007, 95% CI: -0.011, -0.003). CONCLUSION Our data indicated that urinary Ʃ-OH PAHs levels of workers were positively associated with MCI and the level of plasma P-Tau231.

Abstract
Background: Evidence is lacking on risk factors for frailty and prefrailty and their relationship with self-management behaviors in patients ≥40 years of age with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Participants were selected as a cross-sectional cohort at five communities in Shanghai, China during January−March 2021. The modified FRAIL scale and the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities (SDSCA) measure were used. Results: Of the 558 participants, 10.2% were classified as frailty and 34.1% as prefrailty. The prevalence of frailty was higher in males than in females (p = 0.009), whereas females were associated with higher odds of prefrailty (aOR 1.67, 95% CI [1.08−2.60]). Multimorbidity, ≥3 chronic diseases, and hospitalization in the past year were considered risk factors for both frailty and prefrailty. Each point earned on SDSCA and physical activity were associated with lower odds of frailty (aOR 0.95, 95% CI [0.92−0.98]) and prefrailty (aOR 0.52, 95% CI [0.31−0.85]), respectively. Frail participants performed significantly worse self-care practice than prefrail and non-frail ones, especially on diet, physical activity, and medication adherence (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Frail patients ≥40 years of age with type 2 diabetes reported poorer self-care performance. Further interventional studies are warranted to clarify their causal relationship.

Abstract
Background: To determine whether long-term self-management among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus has the risk of developing complications. Methods: We conducted a survey of self-management behavior using diabetes self-management scales (DMSES-C and TSRQ-d) from November 2019 to May 2020 linked with biomarkers (glucose, lipid profile, blood pressure, and kidney function), and the varying measure values were transformed into normal rate proportions. We performed latent profile analysis (LPA) to categorize the patient into different patient health profiles using five classes (C1-C5), and we predicted the risk of retinopathy after adjusting for covariates. Results: The patients in C1, C2, and C4 had a higher likelihood of retinopathy events than those in C5, with odds ratios (ORs) of 1.655, 2.168, and 1.788, respectively (p = 0.032). In addition, a longer duration of diabetes was correlated with an increased risk of retinopathy events as well as being elderly. Conclusions: Optimal biomarker health profiles and patients with strong motivation pertaining to their T2DM care yielded better outcomes. Health profiles portraying patient control of diabetes over the long term can categorize patients with T2DM into different behavior groups. Customizing diabetes care information into different health profiles raises awareness of control strategies for caregivers and patients.

Abstract
AIMS This study investigated self-care activities and identified their related factors in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in Guangzhou, China, between September 2016 and February 2017, involving 202 Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Measures included the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Questionnaire and Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire. RESULTS Self-care activities in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were suboptimal overall. Foot care and blood sugar testing were the self-care activities that were performed the least. One fifth of patients smoked. Some subscales of illness perceptions, receiving health education on diabetes, employment status, education level, body mass index, age and time since type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosis, were related to self-care activities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. CONCLUSION Health-care providers and nurses should encourage greater engagement in self-care activities in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, especially foot care and blood sugar testing. Illness perceptions may be used as a framework to guide interventions.

Abstract
AIMS Mild Cognitive impairment (MCI) is common in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. The impaired cognitive function had harmful effect on patients' diabetic conditions. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of MCI in T2DM (T2DM-MCI) patients by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. METHODS We carried out a literature search until June 1, 2020, for all observational studies in the following databases: Medline (PubMed), Web of Science, and Embase. Two independent reviewers initially screened the eligible articles. Then, a meta-analysis (random effects model) was conducted to estimate the prevalence of MCI in people with T2DM with STATA 16. RESULTS A total of 1808 articles were first considered after reading title and abstract, 12 of which remained after reviewing the full text. The combined prevalence of MCI in T2DM patients was estimated to be 45.0% (95% CI=36.0, 54.0). There was no significant heterogeneity through meta-regression and sensitivity analysis. Overall, Europe (n=2, r=36.6%, 95% CI=26.3, 46.9, I2=82.3%) had a lower prevalence than Asia (n=10, r=46.4%, 95% CI=36.2, 56.6, I2=98%). The overall prevalence in female patients (n=14, r=46.9%, 95% CI=34, 59.8, I2=98.3%) was higher than that in male patients (n=14, r=38.8%, 95% CI=27, 50.7, I2=98%). Subgroup analysis based on age demonstrated a lower prevalence in patients older than 60 years (n=9, r=44.3%, 95% CI=33.1, 55.6, I2=98.3%) than patients younger than 60 years (n=3, r=46.4%, 95% CI=33.3, 59.5, I2=91.2%). CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that the pooled estimated prevalence of mild cognitive impairment in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients is high worldwide, especially in China Asia. Primary care clinicians should pay more attention to the cognitive function of T2DM patients, as mild cognitive impairment is one of the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment is common in older adults with diabetes and is likely to negatively affect their daily diabetes self-management behaviors (DSMB). The primary aim of this integrative review was to summarize and synthesize the current state of knowledge about relationships between cognitive impairment and DSMB in older adults with type 2 diabetes. The review was guided by Whittemore and Knafl's 2005 framework, and study quality was evaluated using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool. Of 27 studies reviewed, 24 were quantitative, and three were qualitative. Heterogeneity was noted in study design, participant characteristics, and measures of cognitive function and DSMB. Overall, global cognitive impairment and executive function impairment related particularly to poor medication management and glucose self-monitoring. The findings supported the need for routine cognitive assessment of older adults with diabetes, but more longitudinal and interventional studies are needed to better define cognitive impairment-DSMB relationships.
