Abstract
Because of its enhanced antitumor efficacy, lapatinib (LAP) is commonly used clinically in combination with the anthracycline drug doxorubicin (DOX) to treat metastatic breast cancer. While it is well recognized that this combination chemotherapy can lead to an increased risk of cardiotoxicity in adult women, its potential cardiotoxicity in the fetus during pregnancy remains understudied. Here, we aimed to examine the combination of LAP chemotherapy and DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in the fetus using a zebrafish embryonic system and investigate the underlying pathologic mechanisms. First, we examined the dose-dependent cardiotoxicity of combined LAP and DOX exposure in zebrafish embryos, which mostly manifested as pericardial edema, bradycardia, cardiac function decline and reduced survival. Second, we revealed that a significant increase in oxidative stress concurrent with activated MAPK signaling, as indicated by increased protein expression of phosphorylated p38 and Jnk, was a notable pathophysiological event after combined LAP and DOX exposure. Third, we showed that inhibiting MAPK signaling by pharmacological treatment with the p38MAPK inhibitor SB203580 or genetic ablation of the map2k6 gene could significantly alleviate combined LAP and DOX exposure-induced cardiotoxicity. Thus, we provided both pharmacologic and genetic evidence to suggest that inhibiting MAPK signaling could exert cardioprotective effects. These findings have implications for understanding the potential cardiotoxicity induced by LAP and DOX combinational chemotherapy in the fetus during pregnancy, which could be leveraged for the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
Breast cancer is a common type of cancer diagnosed during pregnancy, with increasing incidence over the last years, as more women choose to delay childbearing. Compared to breast cancer in general population, pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is significantly different in its terms of epidemiology, diagnostic and therapeutic management, while it exhibits particularly aggressive behavior, deriving from its unique molecular and biological profile. Although not fully elucidated, the pathophysiological basis of PABC can be traced back to a combination of hormonal and immune changes during pregnancy, breast involution and altered gene expression. There is considerable controversy in the existing literature about the influence of PABC on pregnancy outcomes, regarding both short- and long-term effects on maternal and fetal/neonatal health. The majority of PABC patients have advanced-stage disease at initial diagnosis and face a significantly poorer prognosis, with decreased survival rates. The most commonly reported adverse obstetrical–fetal events are preterm delivery and prematurity-associated neonatal morbidity, while other neonatal treatment-associated complications might also occur, even when safe therapeutic options are applied during pregnancy. The objective of the present comprehensive review was to summarize current knowledge and up-to-date evidence about the pathophysiological, molecular and biological basis of PABC, as well as its association with adverse maternal, obstetrical, fetal and neonatal outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC), defined as breast carcinoma diagnosed during pregnancy or in the first post-partum year, is one of the most common gestation-related malignancies with reported differences in tumor characteristics and outcomes. This multicenter study aims to review cases of PABC in Singapore, including their clinicopathological features, treatment, and clinical outcomes compared to non-PABC patients. METHODS Demographic, histopathologic and clinical outcomes of 93 PABC patients obtained from our database were compared to 1424 non-PABC patients. RESULTS PABC patients presented at a younger age. They had higher tumor and nodal stages, higher tumor grade, were more likely to be hormone receptor negative and had a higher incidence of multicentric and multifocal tumors. Histological examination after definitive surgery showed no significant difference in tumor size and number of positive lymph nodes suggesting similar neoadjuvant treatment effects. Despite this, PABC patients had worse outcomes with poorer overall survival and disease-free survival, OS (P < 0.0001) and DFS (P < 0.0001). Termination of pregnancy did not improve survival. CONCLUSION Patients with PABC present at a higher stage with more aggressive disease and have poorer outcomes compared to non-PABC patients. Reducing delay in diagnosis and treatment may help improve survival.

Abstract
As the coincidence of pregnancy and cancer rise, clinicians must be prepared to counsel their patients on the complex relationship between maternal and fetal health. In most types of cancer, maternal prognosis mirrors that of non-pregnant women. However, challenges associated with the timing of diagnosis and treatment can present additional risks. Consequently, pregnant cancer patients must be counseled early and effectively with regard to how their pregnancy status affects treatment options and the range of expected outcomes for both mother and fetus. Some patients choose to terminate pregnancy after such counseling, though the specific course of action depends on the cancer in question, the stage at diagnosis, and the personal priorities and values of the patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate if cancer in pregnancy causes a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) during pregnancy and postpartum compared with pregnant women without cancer. DESIGN A historical prospective cohort study using data from nationwide registries. SETTING AND POPULATION We assessed all pregnancies in Denmark between 1 January 1977 and 31 December 2017. METHODS We linked information concerning cancer diagnosis, pregnancy and VTE diagnosis and potential confounders. Event rates of VTE for women with pre-pregnancy cancer, cancer in pregnancy and without cancer were calculated per 10 000 pregnancies and compared using logistic regression analysis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Occurrence of VTE during pregnancy or the postpartum period. RESULTS A total of 3 581 214 pregnancies were included in the study and we found 1330 women with cancer in pregnancy. In pregnant women with cancer, the event rate of VTE was 75.2 per 10 000 pregnancies compared with 10.7 per 10 000 pregnancies in the no cancer group. The findings correspond to an increased adjusted odds ratio of 6.50 (95% CI3.5-12.1) in the cancer in pregnancy group in comparison with the no cancer group. CONCLUSIONS Women with cancer in pregnancy have a markedly higher risk of pregnancy-associated VTE compared with women without cancer. In pregnancy-related VTE risk assessment, the presence of cancer alone may be sufficient to indicate thromboprophylaxis. Abstract
Breast cancer in pregnancy is a rare entity generally presenting as a persistent breast mass, but is often a delayed finding due to the expected physiologic changes in the breast related to pregnancy and lactation. The preferred diagnostic workup of a persistent breast mass involves a combination of mammographic and ultrasonographic evaluation in addition to tissue diagnosis via core biopsy ; breast MRI is not recommended. Surgical excision should be reserved for definitive treatment in order to minimize fetal exposure to anesthesia. Evaluation for distant metastatic spread can be performed using radiographs and ultrasound to limit fetal radiation exposure . Similar to the non-pregnant patient, prognosis is primarily driven by tumor biology, however, there is limited and conflicting data regarding the impact of pregnancy on breast cancer outcomes with a distinct difference in survival among patients with breast cancer during pregnancy compared to those diagnosed postpartum.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Pregnancy-associated lymphoma (PAL) is an uncommon entity that lacks detailed prospective data. It poses significant management challenges that incorporate maternal and fetal risks associated with treatment or delayed intervention. Herein, we review the current literature for the diagnosis, management, and supportive care strategies for PAL. RECENT FINDINGS Establishment of a multidisciplinary team, including hematology-oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, and neonatology, is critical in the management of PAL. For staging, ultrasound and MRI are preferred modalities with use of computerized tomography in select situations. Data for the safety and effectiveness of therapy for PAL is largely based on retrospective studies. The timing of lymphoma-directed antenatal systemic therapy depends on the trimester, gestational age, lymphoma subtype and aggressiveness, and patient wishes. Therapy in the first trimester is usually not advocated, while treatment in the second and third trimesters appears to result in similar outcomes for PAL compared with non-pregnant patients with lymphoma. An overarching goal in most PAL cases should be to plan for delivery at term (i.e., gestational age > 37 weeks). For supportive care, most antiemetics, including agents such as neurokinin-1 receptor antagonists, have been used safely during pregnancy. For prevention or treatment of infections, particular antibiotics (i.e., macrolides, cephalosporins, penicillins, metronidazole), antivirals (i.e., acyclovir, valacyclovir, famciclovir), and antifungals (amphotericin B) have demonstrated safety and with use of growth factors reserved for treatment of neutropenia (vs. primary prophylaxis). Therapy for PAL should be individualized with goals of care that balance maternal and fetal well-being, which should include a multidisciplinary care team and overall intent for term delivery in most cases.

Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The previously estimated 14 million new cases in the year of 2012 are expected to rise, yearly, over the following 2 decades. Among women, breast cancer is the most common one. In 2012, almost 1.7 million people were diagnosed worldwide and half a million died from the disease. Despite having several treatments available, from surgery to chemotherapy, most of these treatments have severe adverse effects. Chemotherapy has a narrow therapeutic window and requires high dosage treatment in patients with advanced-stage cancers and further need innovative treatment strategies. Although methotrexate (MTX) is not a first line drug used against breast cancer, however, it might be valuable to fight the disease. MTX is an effective and cheap drug that might impair malignant growth without irreversible damage to normal tissues. Nevertheless, while MTX does present some disadvantages including poor solubility and low permeability, several strategies are being used to discover and provide novel and effective targeted treatment against breast cancer. In this review, we analyze the chemotherapy of breast cancer and its relationship with drug MTX.

Abstract
Objective Approach to precancerous and high-risk breast lesions occurring in pregnancy has received little attention in the literature. We carried out a study to investigate the practice of surgeons in the management of these cases. Materials and Methods A short survey was sent to surgeons, including a multiple-choice questionnaire about their practice for atypical hyperplasia or lobular carcinoma in situ presenting in each trimester of pregnancy or at time of breastfeeding. Answer options included observation, immediate vacuum biopsy, immediate surgery, surgery in next trimester, surgery after delivery, and surgery after end of breastfeeding; based on the time of presentation. Results Out of the 671 practitioners invited, 97(14.5 %) responded to the survey. Participants were from 23 countries. Answers showed that management of gestational Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia (ADH) and Lobular Neoplasia (LN) was readily postponed by surgeons in favor of fetus safety while being cautious about risks of conservative management alone. Conclusion Various methods of treatment are selected by surgeons for managing high-risk breast lesions during pregnancy. In the absence of relevant literature, decision making in a multidisciplinary team would be the best approach in these cases.

Abstract
Background The number of cancers diagnosed during pregnancy is on the rise, and breast cancer is the most common malignancy. Presently, there are very limited resources and no clear guidelines for managing this peculiar patient population both worldwide and in India. The objective of this study was to find out the incidence of pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) in a tertiary care referral centre and to compare the epidemiological, diagnostic and prognostic factors as well as maternal and foetal outcomes with the most recent literature worldwide. Methods We conducted a retrospective descriptive study of women diagnosed with breast cancer in pregnancy and post-partum period at a tertiary care centre in southern India during the period of 10 years (total number of breast cancer patients were 10). We studied the diagnostic and prognostic factors as well as maternal and foetal outcome in patients diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time in pregnancy. Results Overall incidence of PABC was found to be 0.6% (n = 10). Mean age at the time of presentation was 30.7 ± 4 years. All cases suspected clinically or on imaging (USG) were confirmed with FNAC, excision biopsy or Trucut biopsy. Out of 10 patients, 70% (n = 7) had an advanced-stage disease on diagnosis. Histopathology suggested 90% (n = 9) had invasive ductal carcinoma and 55.5% (n = 5) had a triple negative receptor status. 20% (n = 2) of our patients had opted for a breast conservation surgery (BCS), and 70% (n = 7) of our patients underwent modified radical mastectomy with neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy/radiotherapy. One patient had a second trimester MTP in view of stage 4 disease. 77.7% (n = 7) of the nine patients who continued pregnancy underwent LSCS, out of which 57.4% (n = 4) were elective, and MRM was done concurrently with LSCS in 50% (n = 2) of the elective LSCS. The mean birth weight of the 9 neonates was 2.2 ± 0.5 kg. Intrauterine growth retardation was seen in 22.2% (n = 2) neonates. 33.3% (n = 3) of the neonates required NICU support, and one baby expired on post-natal day 16. Conclusion With the increasing number of elderly primigravida amongst the urban population, a clear understanding of PABC is becoming more important. A multidisciplinary team approach shall help the clinician not only in reducing the heavy burden of patient responsibility but more importantly, in guaranteeing better quality of treatment, avoiding unnecessary delays in providing interventions and providing adequate treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical reports link specific medications with the development of antinuclear antibodies (ANA), but population-based evidence is limited. OBJECTIVE The present study investigated associations between prescription medication use and ANA in a representative sample of the adult noninstitutionalized US population, first focusing on medications previously related to ANA and then considering all medications reported in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS Based on NHANES data (1999-2004) for 3608 adults (ages ≥18 years), we estimated odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to assess associations between recent medication use and ANA (overall and in sex and age subgroups), adjusted for potential confounders and the survey sampling design. RESULTS We found no evidence that most medications previously associated with ANA in specific individuals were risk factors for ANA in the general population, although statistical power was limited for some medications. Overall, ANA were less prevalent in adults who recently used any prescription medications compared with those who did not (OR = 0.73; CI = 0.57,0.93), and likewise several classes of medications were inversely associated with ANA, including hormones (OR = 0.73; CI = 0.55,0.98), thiazide diuretics (OR = 0.43; CI = 0.24,0.79), sulfonylureas (OR = 0.41; CI = 0.19,0.89), and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants (OR = 0.65; CI = 0.42,0.98). Positive associations with ANA were seen for loop diuretics (OR = 1.72; CI = 1.03,2.88) in all adults, and for benzodiazepines (OR = 2.11; CI = 1.09,4.10) and bronchodilators (OR = 1.83; CI = 1.00,3.38) in older (ages ≥60) adults. Estrogens were positively associated with ANA in older women (OR = 1.80; CI = 1.00,3.23) but inversely associated with ANA in younger (ages 18-59) women (OR = 0.43; CI = 0.20,0.93). Regarding individual medications, ANA were positively associated with ciprofloxacin (OR = 4.23; CI = 1.21,14.8), furosemide (OR = 1.79; CI = 1.09,2.93), and omeprazole (OR = 2.05; CI = 1.03,4.10) in all adults, and with salmeterol (OR = 3.76; CI = 1.66,8.52), tolterodine (OR = 6.64; CI = 1.45,30.5), and triamterene (OR = 3.10; CI = 1.08,8.88) in older adults. Also, in younger adults, hydrochlorothiazide was inversely associated with ANA (OR = 0.44; CI = 0.20,0.98). CONCLUSIONS Our findings in the general population do not confirm most clinically reported positive associations between specific medications and ANA in some individuals. However, novel positive ANA associations with other medications, as well as unexplained inverse associations with certain classes of medications and overall medication use, deserve further research to clarify the possible roles of medications as risk and protective factors in the development of autoantibodies and autoimmune disease.

Abstract
Malignancies are one of the leading causes of mortality in women during their reproductive life. Treatment of gynecological malignant tumors during pregnancy is possible but not simple, since it creates a conflict between care of the mother and the fetus. BC is the most prevalent malignancy diagnosed in pregnancy, ranking up to 21% of all pregnancy-related malignancies. Due to its stets increasing prevalence, aggressive cancer subtype, and severe ethical and psychological aspects linked to the disease, experts raise an alarm for an acute necessity to improve the overall management of the PABC-the issue which has strongly motivated our current paper. Comprehensive research data and clinical experience accumulated in recent years have advanced our understanding of the disease complexity. PABC treatment must be individualized with an emphasis on optimal care of the mother, while observing standard treatment protocols with regard to safety of the fetus. Treatment protocols should be elaborated based on the individualized patient profile, bearing in mind the acute danger to the mother, maximizing the therapy efficacy and minimizing harmful effects to the fetus. Complex consulting on treatment options, their impacts on pregnancy and potential teratogenic effects requires tight "doctor-patient" collaboration. Complications that may arise due to the treatment of breast cancer in pregnancy require a multiprofessional expertise including oncologists, neonatologists, perinatologists, obstetricians, teratologists, and toxicologists, and an extensive psychological support throughout the pregnancy and after giving birth. Thereby, specifically psychological aspects of PABC diagnosis and follow-up are frequently neglected, being not yet adequately explored in the entire disease management approach. Herewith, we update the status quo regarding the currently available diagnostic modalities, complex treatment algorithms, and novel clinical approaches which altogether argue for an urgent necessity of a paradigm shift moving away from reactive to predictive, preventive, and personalized medical approach in the overall management of PABC meeting the needs of young populations, persons at high risk, affected patients, and families as the society at large.

Abstract
Breast cancer is one of the most common malignancies diagnosed in pregnancy. Although the tumor is often detected at an advanced stage, placental metastases are rare. Here, we describe the case of a woman with breast cancer recurrence during pregnancy and subsequent metastases. The focus of this study is the large amount of placenta metastases, which have been analyzed immunohistochemically. Staining with trophoblast markers (placenta alkaline phosphatase, beta human chorionic gonadotropin and human placental lactogen) showed the strict localization of metastases in the intervillous space without invasion into fetal tissue. They have a large spheroidal shape and are free of blood vessels. Staining with Ki-67 revealed an outer proliferative shell and inner necrotic core. At week 28, a healthy newborn was born by elective cesarean section. A few weeks later, after surgery and FEC60 (fluorouracil, epirubicin, cyclophosphamide) cycles, the patient died. Breast cancer metastases in the placenta are rarely described. The special immunological environment in pregnancy may influence phenotype, growth, and behavior of tumor and metastases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies suggest antinuclear antibodies (ANA) may be related to mortality risk, but evidence is sparse and inconclusive. Thus, we investigated ANA associations with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in U.S. adults. METHODS Our sample included 3357 adults (ages ≥20 years) from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with ANA measurements (1:80 dilution) and mortality data through 2011 (median follow-up: 9.4 years). We estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) via weighted Cox regression to assess ANA associations with mortality from all causes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. Models adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, and obesity. Analyses examined mortality in the full sample and in subgroups based on self-reported histories of CVD and cancer, both overall and stratified by sex and age at enrollment. RESULTS Overall, ANA were not strongly associated with death from all causes (HR: 1.13; CI: 0.79, 1.60), from CVD (HR: 1.60; CI: 0.80, 3.20), or from cancer (HR: 1.58; CI: 0.75, 3.33), though all three HR estimates exceeded 1. In the subgroup with a history of cancer, ANA were associated with elevated all-cause mortality in men (HR: 2.28; CI: 1.01, 5.14) and in participants who enrolled at age ≥75 years (HR: 1.99; CI: 1.04, 3.80). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that ANA are not strongly associated with mortality in the general population. Longitudinal studies with repeated assessments are needed to understand the temporal relationship between ANA, aging-associated diseases, and mortality.

Abstract
Background The management of pregnancy-associated-cancer (PAC) requires epidemiological evaluation of the pathways of care. The aim of this study was to describe maternal and neonatal outcomes of PAC in Martinique. Methods A retrospective study was conducted using data from medical records and the Martinique Cancer Registry for all PAC diagnosed between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2014. Results Eighteen women were diagnosed with PAC: 17 during pregnancy and one during the postpartum period. Mean age at diagnosis was 35.7 ± 5.4 years. PAC were mainly gynecological cancers (12/18); the other sites were: lymphoma, brain, liver, colon, skin and unknown primary site. In most cases, PAC was detected in symptomatic individuals (72.2%). Nine women had nodal involvement or initial metastasis at diagnosis. No chemotherapy was administered in cases of preservation of pregnancy. Seven fetal losses caused by abortion and miscarriage were recorded, and 11 women conducted viable pregnancies. The main neonatal pathology observed was prematurity (58.3%). Conclusion Cancer management during pregnancy is a challenge for French West-Indies territories. A Caribbean Observatory of rare cancers could help to ensure a coordinated approach to support and monitoring for these patients.

Abstract
Primary musculoskeletal cancer and metastatic disease to bone in pregnant patients presents major treatment challenges. Although uncommon, musculoskeletal malignancies in pregnant women have been reported. When diagnosing and treating these patients, the mother's health must be managed appropriately while ensuring that fetal development is not deleteriously affected. Extensive radiographic imaging and more advanced techniques are often necessary to fully characterize the extent of disease. When possible, magnetic resonance imaging should be used instead of computed tomography to limit exposure of the conceptus to radiation. If treatment is needed, therapeutic radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery should be considered. Surgical resection is the foundation of treatment of early-stage primary bone tumors and soft-tissue sarcomas during pregnancy. With surgery, anesthesia and thromboprophylaxis are important considerations. If chemotherapy is required, administration should be avoided in the first trimester to limit harm to the fetus. Therapeutic radiation should similarly be avoided during the first trimester and often can be postponed until after delivery.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics and outcome of cancer diagnosed during pregnancy. Methods This is a retrospective cohort study of women who were diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy at a tertiary academic hospital between 1995 and 2013. Maternal characteristics, gestational age at diagnosis, and type, stage, symptoms and signs of cancer for each patient were retrieved from the medical records. The cancer treatment, pregnancy management and the subsequent perinatal and maternal outcomes for each cancer were assessed. Results A total of 87 women were diagnosed with cancer during pregnancy (172.6 cases per 100,000 deliveries). The most common cancer was breast cancer (n=20), followed by gastrointestinal (n=17), hematologic (n=13), thyroid (n=11), central nervous system (n=7), cervical (n=7), ovarian (n=5), lung (n=3), and other cancers (n=4). Eighteen (20.7%) patients terminated their pregnancies. In the 69 (79.3%) patients who maintained their pregnancies, one patient miscarried and 34 patients delivered preterm. Of the preterm babies, 24 (70.6%) were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and 3 (8.8%) of those expired. The maternal mortality rate was 31.0%, with highest rate seen with lung cancers (66.7%), followed by gastrointestinal (50.0%), central nervous system (50.0%), hematologic (30.8%), breast (25.0%), ovarian (20.0%) cervical (14.3%), and thyroid cancers (0%). Conclusion The clinical characteristics and outcome of cancer during pregnancy were highly variable depending on the type of cancer. However, timely diagnosis and appropriate management of cancer during pregnancy may improve both maternal and neonatal outcome.

Abstract
Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with a cancer diagnosis or those at risk for cancer due to hereditary cancer syndromes may benefit from genetic counseling and testing not only to manage personal risk but also to address reproductive concerns, especially fertility. The opportunity for genetic counselors to provide important risk information is relevant to both the newly diagnosed as well as to unaffected carriers and survivors. However, genetic counselors may need additional training in reproductive options related to AYA cancer to provide this valuable counsel. This commentary uses hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome as a model to highlight important considerations when discussing preimplanatation genetic diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis, particularly in the context of expanded testing for hereditary cancer risk including multigene panels or whole exome or whole genome sequencing. Other hereditary cancers are also addressed; however, less is known about the psychosocial and fertility concerns in these AYA populations. Additionally, we provide an overview of the concept of “oncofertility” - the linkage between cancer care and reproductive medicine that aims to expand the reproductive opportunities of cancer patients - and offer support for the expansion of guidelines to include genetic counselors in AYA cancer patients’ treatment planning related to reproductive health and fertility.

Abstract
Every year, more and more patients fall into rare or extreme categories of breast cancer-young, elderly, pregnant, or male. Contributing factors may be improved risk assessment and screening techniques (especially of dense breast tissue), delayed childbearing, and the aging population. These patients can challenge usual medical decision making because of their unique situation. There might be a concern for the fetus, worry about future fertility, a question of local control in a man, or concern for overdiagnosis or overtreatment in an older patient. Because these populations are seldom included in the large breast cancer trials from which standard treatment recommendations are made, an update on management for young, elderly, pregnant, and male breast cancer patients may be helpful.

Abstract
Background In recent years, scientific research has increasingly focused on malignancies during pregnancy. However, the development of musculoskeletal tumors during pregnancy has only been the subject of a few studies so far. The primary aim of this study was to identify the incidence of sarcomas during pregnancy at our musculoskeletal tumor center (MSTC). Secondarily we intended to analyze these cases and discuss possible recommendations regarding diagnostic work-up as well as therapy on the basis of the literature. Methods All female patients who had been treated for soft tissue or bone sarcoma at our academic MSTC in the period between the years 2002 and 2010 were screened retrospectively for anamnestic annotations of pregnancy or records of pregnancy in the obstetrical database of our university hospital. The patients who met the criteria for inclusion (diagnosed sarcoma and pregnancy) were enrolled. For every pregnant patient two age-matched female control patients that suffered from tumors with the same histologic type were included. Results In the period between 2002 and 2010, 240 female patients between the age of 16 and 45 were treated for sarcoma. In eight out of the 240 cases the tumor disease developed or progressed during pregnancy. The delay in diagnosis was approximately eight months and turned out to be significantly higher for pregnant patients compared to non- pregnant controls. Each woman’s tumor was misdiagnosed at least once. Conclusions Diagnostic follow-up of pregnant women presenting with a growing or painful mass, which is suspected to be a musculoskeletal tumor, should be performed at a specialized tumor center. We recommend a multidisciplinary approach and discussing all possible consequences for mother and child intensively in accordance with the available literature.
