Abstract
Blood transfusions are now an essential part of modern medicine. Transfusable red blood cells (RBCs) are employed in various therapeutic strategies; however, the processes of blood donation, collection, and administration still involve many limitations. Notably, a lack of donors, the risk of transfusion-transmitted disease, and recent pandemics such as COVID-19 have prompted us to search for alternative therapeutics to replace this resource. Originally, RBC production was attempted via the ex vivo differentiation of stem cells. However, a more approachable and effective cell source is now required for broader applications. As a viable alternative, pluripotent stem cells have been actively used in recent research. In this review, we discuss the basic concepts related to erythropoiesis, as well as early research using hematopoietic stem cells ex vivo, and discuss the current trend of in vitro erythropoiesis using human-induced pluripotent stem cells.

Comparison of syphilis seropositivity between non-immigrant and immigrant populations in the Anatolian side of Istanbul, Turkiye: Results of five-years retrospective study. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our study aimed to evaluate the seropositivity for syphilis in non- immigrant and immigrant populations and compare the results regarding demographic data. METHODS In accordance with the reverse algorithm, syphilis tests were performed between May 2014 and December 2018 in hospitals in our service zone for syphilis screening or symptomatic disease. RESULTS A total of 135.328 non- immigrant and 6.641 immigrant were screened for syphilis. Seropositivity rates were 1.3% in the non- immigrant and 3.8% in immigrant groups (p=0.0001). There was a statistically significant difference in terms of seropositivity rates between the various age groups in the local group and immigrant groups (except 18 25 age group) (p<0.05). Syphilis seropositivity rates were found to be lower in indigenous population than immigrant groups according to the years tested (p=0.0001). The seropositivity rates were 2.4% and 3.2% among the males (p=0.025) and 0.6% and 4.0% among females (p=0.0001) in non-immigrantand immigrant groups, respectively. Whereas, 0.6% of pregnant women in the local group and 3.7% of pregnant women in immigrant groups were seropositive for syphilis (p=0.0001). Among the HIV positive group, syphilis seropositivity was only observed in the non-immigrant group with a rate of 23.0% (p=0.0001). CONCLUSION The antibodies against syphilis were found more frequently in immigrants than non-immigrant. Among the HIV positive individuals syphilis seropositivity was only observed in the non-immigrant group.

Abstract
Amidst the global shortfalls in blood supply, storage limitations of donor blood and the availability of potential blood substitutes for transfusion applications, society has pivoted towards in vitro generation of red blood cells (RBCs) as a means to solve these issues. Many conventional research studies over the past few decades have found success in differentiating hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) from cord blood, adult bone marrow and peripheral blood sources. More recently, techniques that involve immortalization of erythroblast sources have also gained traction in tackling this problem. However, the RBCs generated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) still remain as the most favorable solution due to many of its added advantages. In this review, we focus on the breakthroughs for high-density cultures of hiPSC-derived RBCs, and highlight the major challenges and prospective solutions throughout the whole process of erythropoiesis for hiPSC-derived RBCs. Furthermore, we elaborate on the recent advances and techniques used to achieve cost-effective, high-density cultures of GMP-compliant RBCs, and on their relevant novel applications after downstream processing and purification.

Abstract
We reviewed the relevant syphilis diagnostic literature to address the following question: what are the performance characteristics, stratified by the stage of syphilis, for nontreponemal serologic tests? The database search included key terms related to syphilis and nontreponemal tests from 1960–2017, and for data related to the venereal disease research laboratory test from 1940–1960. Based on this review, we report the sensitivity and specificity for each stage of syphilis (primary, secondary, early latent, late latent, or unknown duration; tertiary as well as neurosyphilis, ocular syphilis, and otic syphilis). We also report on reactive nontreponemal tests in conditions other than syphilis, false negatives, and automated nontreponemal tests. Overall, many studies were limited by their sample size, lack of clearly documented clinical staging, and lack of well-defined gold standards. There is a need to better define the performance characteristics of nontreponemal tests, particularly in the late stages of syphilis, with clinically well-characterized samples. Published data are needed on automated nontreponemal tests. Evidence-based guidelines are needed for optimal prozone titrations. Finally, improved criteria and diagnostics for neurosyphilis (as well as ocular and otic syphilis) are needed.

Abstract
Background For over 25 years cord blood has been used as an alternative to bone marrow for therapeutic use in conditions of the blood, immune system and metabolic disorders. Parents can decide if they would like to privately store their infant’s cord blood for later use if needed or to publicly donate it. Parents need to be aware of the options that exist for their infant’s cord blood and have access to the relevant information to inform their choice. The aim of this paper is to identify parent’s knowledge and awareness of cord blood donation, private banking options and stem cell use, and parent sources and preferred sources of this information. Methods An integrative review was conducted using several electronic databases to identify papers on parents’ knowledge, attitudes and attitudes towards umbilical cord blood donation and banking. The CASP tool was used to determine validity and quality of the studies included in the review. Results The search of the international literature identified 25 papers which met review inclusion criteria. This integrative review identified parents’ knowledge of cord banking and/or donation as low, with awareness of cord blood banking options greater than knowledge. Parents were found to have positive attitudes towards cord blood donation including awareness of the value of cord blood and its uses, with the option considered to be an ethical and altruistic choice. Knowledge on cord blood use were mixed; many studies’ participants did not correctly identify uses. Information sources for parents on cord blood was found to be varied, fragmented and inconsistent. Health professionals were identified as the preferred source of information on cord blood banking for parents. Conclusions This integrative review has identified that further research should focus on identifying information that expectant parents require to assist them to make informed choices around cord blood banking; and identifying barriers present for health professionals providing evidence based information on cord blood use and banking options. Abstract
In vitro generation of red blood cells (RBCs) has the potential to circumvent the shortfalls in global demand for blood for transfusion applications. The conventional approach for RBC generation has been from differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) derived from cord blood, adult bone marrow or peripheral blood. More recently, RBCs have been generated from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) as well as from immortalized adult erythroid progenitors. In this review, we highlight the recent advances to RBC generation from these different approaches and discuss the challenges and new strategies that can potentially make large-scale in vitro generation of RBCs a feasible approach.
