Abstract
OBJECTIVE Forward head posture (FHP) is a common postural disorder that alters shoulder function. This study examined the efficacy of a corrective program involving postural correction exercises (PCEs), scapular stabilization exercises (SSEs), and kinesiotaping (KT) on improving craniovertebral angle (CVA), scapular position, and dominant hand grip strength (HGS) in individuals with FHP. METHODS Sixty subjects (8 males and 52 females, 18-40 years old) were randomly allocated into four equal groups: Group A: received PCEs only, Group B: received PCEs and SSEs, Group C: received PCEs and KT, Group D: received PCEs, SSEs and KT. All subjects received treatment for 4 weeks (4 times/week) and postural advice. Outcome measures included cranio-vertebral angle (CVA), scapular position using Lateral Scapular Slide Test and dominant HGS using a CAMRY dynamometer that were assessed at baseline and 4 weeks post intervention. RESULTS Comparing all groups post training revealed that there were statistically significant increases (p < 0.05) in all measured variables (CVA, scapular position and dominant HGS) in favor of group (D). CONCLUSION Combination of PCEs, SSEs and KT interventions has achieved the best gains in terms of CVA, dominant HGS and regaining optimal scapular position in FHP subjects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Massage is widely used for neck pain, but its effectiveness remains unclear. OBJECTIVES To assess the benefits and harms of massage compared to placebo or sham, no treatment or exercise as an adjuvant to the same co-intervention for acute to chronic persisting neck pain in adults with or without radiculopathy, including whiplash-associated disorders and cervicogenic headache. SEARCH METHODS We searched multiple databases (CENTRAL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Index to Chiropractic Literature, trial registries) to 1 October 2023. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) comparing any type of massage with sham or placebo, no treatment or wait-list, or massage as an adjuvant treatment, in adults with acute, subacute or chronic neck pain. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We used the standard methodological procedures expected by Cochrane. We transformed outcomes to standardise the direction of the effect (a smaller score is better). We used a partially contextualised approach relative to identified thresholds to report the effect size as slight-small, moderate or large-substantive. MAIN RESULTS We included 33 studies (1994 participants analysed). Selection (82%) and detection bias (94%) were common; multiple trials had unclear allocation concealment, utilised a placebo that may not be credible and did not test whether blinding to the placebo was effective. Massage was compared with placebo (n = 10) or no treatment (n = 8), or assessed as an adjuvant to the same co-treatment (n = 15). The trials studied adults aged 18 to 70 years, 70% female, with mean pain severity of 51.8 (standard deviation (SD) 14.1) on a visual analogue scale (0 to 100). Neck pain was subacute-chronic and classified as non-specific neck pain (85%, including n = 1 whiplash), radiculopathy (6%) or cervicogenic headache (9%). Trials were conducted in outpatient settings in Asia (n = 11), America (n = 5), Africa (n = 1), Europe (n = 12) and the Middle East (n = 4). Trials received research funding (15%) from research institutes. We report the main results for the comparison of massage versus placebo. Low-certainty evidence indicates that massage probably results in little to no difference in pain, function-disability and health-related quality of life when compared against a placebo for subacute-chronic neck pain at up to 12 weeks follow-up. It may slightly improve participant-reported treatment success. Subgroup analysis by dose showed a clinically important difference favouring a high dose (≥ 8 sessions over four weeks for ≥ 30 minutes duration). There is very low-certainty evidence for total adverse events. Data on patient satisfaction and serious adverse events were not available. Pain was a mean of 20.55 points with placebo and improved by 3.43 points with massage (95% confidence interval (CI) 8.16 better to 1.29 worse) on a 0 to 100 scale, where a lower score indicates less pain (8 studies, 403 participants; I2 = 39%). We downgraded the evidence to low-certainty due to indirectness; most trials in the placebo comparison used suboptimal massage doses (only single sessions). Selection, performance and detection bias were evident as multiple trials had unclear allocation concealment, utilised a placebo that may not be credible and did not test whether blinding was effective, respectively. Function-disability was a mean of 30.90 points with placebo and improved by 9.69 points with massage (95% CI 17.57 better to 1.81 better) on the Neck Disability Index 0 to 100, where a lower score indicates better function (2 studies, 68 participants; I2 = 0%). We downgraded the evidence to low-certainty due to imprecision (the wide CI represents slight to moderate benefit that does not rule in or rule out a clinically important change) and risk of selection, performance and detection biases. Participant-reported treatment success was a mean of 3.1 points with placebo and improved by 0.80 points with massage (95% CI 1.39 better to 0.21 better) on a Global Improvement 1 to 7 scale, where a lower score indicates very much improved (1 study, 54 participants). We downgraded the evidence to low-certainty due to imprecision (single study with a wide CI that does not rule in or rule out a clinically important change) and risk of performance as well as detection bias. Health-related quality of life was a mean of 43.2 points with placebo and improved by 5.30 points with massage (95% CI 8.24 better to 2.36 better) on the SF-12 (physical) 0 to 100 scale, where 0 indicates the lowest level of health (1 study, 54 participants). We downgraded the evidence once for imprecision (a single small study) and risk of performance and detection bias. We are uncertain whether massage results in increased total adverse events, such as treatment soreness, sweating or low blood pressure (RR 0.99, 95% CI 0.08 to 11.55; 2 studies, 175 participants; I2 = 77%). We downgraded the evidence to very low-certainty due to unexplained inconsistency, risk of performance and detection bias, and imprecision (the CI was extremely wide and the total number of events was very small, i.e < 200 events). AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS The contribution of massage to the management of neck pain remains uncertain given the predominance of low-certainty evidence in this field. For subacute and chronic neck pain (closest to 12 weeks follow-up), massage may result in a little or no difference in improving pain, function-disability, health-related quality of life and participant-reported treatment success when compared to a placebo. Inadequate reporting on adverse events precluded analysis. Focused planning for larger, adequately dosed, well-designed trials is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sedentary lifestyle, age-related degenerative changes or traumatic injuries leads to cervical spine structural mal-alignment, which results in neck pain and other symptoms. Various therapeutic exercises and manual techniques have been proven to be beneficial in terms of managing these symptoms. This study aimed to determine the combined effects of cervical mobilization and post-isometric relaxation (PIR) technique on managing neck pain, cervical side flexion range of motion, and functional limitation in participants with mechanical neck pain linked with myofascial trigger points. METHODS This study followed a 2-arm, parallel-group, pretest-posttest randomized comparative design. Thirty participants with mechanical neck pain associated with myofascial trigger points aged 30.87 ± 4.45 years were randomly allocated to Groups 1 and 2. Group 1 received conventional intervention, PIR, and cervical mobilization techniques while Group 2 received conventional intervention and PIR technique only. Neck pain, muscle tenderness, cervical range of motion, and functional limitations were assessed using a visual analog scale, pressure pain threshold (PPT), goniometer, and neck disability index (NDI) questionnaire, respectively at baseline on day 1 and post-intervention on day 7, 14, and 21. Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Mann-Whitney U test evaluated within-group and between-group analyses, respectively. Statistical significance was established at a 95% confidence interval, indicated by P < .05. RESULTS Significant differences (95% confidence interval [CI], P < .05) were observed within each group for all the outcomes scores when compared to the baselines across multiple time points. Significant variations were observed between the groups when comparing visual analog scale and NDI scores at weeks 1, 2, and 3 post-interventions. In contrast, insignificant differences (95% CI, P > .05) were observed for side flexion range of motion and PPT compared at weeks 1, 2, and 3 post-interventions except for PPT at week 3 post-intervention (95% CI, P < .05). Additionally, Cohen d test revealed the superiority of group 1 over group 2 in reducing pain and functional limitations and improving cervical side flexion range of motion and PPT. CONCLUSION The combination of cervical mobilization and Post-isometric relaxation techniques was discovered to effectively alleviate neck pain and enhance functional abilities when contrasted with the application of post-isometric relaxation alone in patients with mechanical neck pain linked with myofascial trigger points.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to compare the effects of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) vs integrated neuromuscular inhibition technique (INIT) on pain intensity, pressure pain threshold, neck disability, and electrophysiological properties in nonspecific chronic neck pain. Methods We performed a pre-post prospective randomized controlled trial on 90 participants with nonspecific chronic neck pain. The participants were chosen randomly from physical therapy out-patient clinics in the Giza governorate and allocated randomly by permuted block to the following 3 groups: Group A received INIT on the upper trapezius in addition to supervised traditional therapy (STT) as hot pack, stretching and strengthening exercises, Group B received IASTM on the upper trapezius in addition to STT, and Group C received STT only. Treatment was 3 times per week for 4 weeks. Pain intensity by visual analog scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT) by commander algometer, neck disability by Arabic Neck Disability Index (ANDI), and electrophysiological properties in the form of muscle amplitude by root mean square (RMS), and fatigue by median frequency (MDF) were measured at baseline and after 4 weeks. Results In the within-group analysis, there was a statistically significant decrease in VAS, ANDI, and RMS% values within each group with favor to INIT. In PPT and MDF, there was a significant increase within each group with regard to INIT as P value <.05. In the between-group analysis at posttreatment, the results reported a statistically significant difference between INIT and STT, and also between IASTM and STT in all variables. Between INIT and IASTM, there was no statistically significant difference in VAS and NDI, but there was a statistically significant difference in PPT, RMS%, and MDF. The post hoc test reported improvement in all variables in all groups, with more favor to the INIT group in PPT and electrophysiological properties only. Conclusion In this study, we found no statistically significant differences between INIT and IASTM in VAS and ANDI posttreatment, but there were differences between INIT and STT group and IASTM and STT group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Active release technique (ART) and strain-counterstrain (SCS) have been reported to be beneficial for patients with trigger point pain. Therefore, this study of 45 patients with chronic neck pain aimed to compare the effects of 4 weeks of physical therapy with the ART and SCS manipulation with massage alone, evaluated before and after treatment, using the visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, the neck disability index (NDI), and the pressure pain threshold (PPT). MATERIAL AND METHODS The participants were 45 adults with neck pain lasting >12 weeks, divided into the ART group (n=15), SCS group (n=15), and control group (n=15). All groups received clinical massage (CM) for 15 min twice a week for 4 weeks. The control group received only CM, the ART group received CM and ART for 15 min twice a week for 4 weeks, and the SCS group received CM and SCS for 15 min twice a week for 4 weeks. VAS, NDI, and PPT were measured before and after the interventions. RESULTS In all groups, there were significant changes in VAS, NDI, and PPT after the interventions (P<0.05), and there was a significant difference among groups in the difference before and after intervention (P<0.05). VAS and NDI showed the greatest difference among before and after intervention in the ART group (VAS pre-post 3.38±0.76, NDI pre-post 5.69±2.78). PPT showed the greatest difference among before and after intervention in the SCS group (PPT pre-post 1.75±0.62). CONCLUSIONS The ART technique and the SCS technique effectively reduced neck pain and neck disorders in adults with chronic neck pain.

Abstract
Background To investigate the effectiveness of muscle energy technique (MET) for treatment of non-specific neck pain (NSNP). Methods A literature search was performed using electronic databases from their inception until October 2023 for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that investigated the effects of MET on NSNP. A change in pain intensity and reduced disability were the primary and secondary outcomes, respectively, standardized using Hedges' g. A random effects model was used for data pooling. Results This study included 26 RCTs comprising 1170 participants. The results showed that MET significantly reduced pain intensity (Hedges' g = -0.967 95 % CI = -1.417 to -0.517, p < 0.001). However, subgroup analysis revealed that this significant benefit was observed only when MET was combined with other treatments and not with MET monotherapy. MET also reduced disability (Hedges' g = -0.545, 95 % CI = -1.015 to - 0.076, p = 0.023). Meta-regression analysis showed that an increase in treatment duration/session per week contributed to greater pain reduction. No adverse events were reported following the MET. Conclusions In conclusion, our meta-analysis suggests MET's potential effectiveness within a combined treatment for NSNP. However, the evidence's low certainty is likely influenced by bias and study variations. To strengthen these findings, future research should focus on higher-quality clinical trials, longer follow-up periods, and prediction interval presentations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effects of myofascial release (MFR) on pain and dysfunction in individuals with chronic mechanical neck pain (MNP). DATA SOURCES PubMed, Embase, Medline, Wiley Online Library, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP, WanFang Data, and the Cochrane Library were searched until 12 September 2022. REVIEW METHODS This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022302485). Methodological quality was assessed using Cochrane risk of bias assessment, and the quality of the evidence followed the GRADE recommendation. The outcomes pain, cervical mobility (Flexion, Extension, Rotation, lateral flexion), trapezius and suboccipital pressure pain thresholds (PPT), neck disability index (NDI), and adverse effects were extracted. RESULTS After screening of 346 studies, 13 studies and 601 participants met the inclusion criteria. All studies were of moderate methodological quality. Compared with the control group, the participants in the MFR group showed significantly greater improvements trapezius PPT SMD 0.41 (95% CI 0.11-0.72), suboccipital PPT SMD 0.47 (95% CI 0.21-0.72), respectively. The differences were not significant to support the MFR treatment on pain, flexion, extension, rotation, lateral flexion angle, and NDI. None of the studies reported any adverse events. CONCLUSION This systematic review suggests that MFR is an effective treatment for the improvement of PPT of trapezius and suboccipital muscle in patients with chronic MNP. However, there is low to moderate evidence and may change over time.

INTRODUCTION To our knowledge, no papers have reported the results of robotic-assisted surgery for sequential bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA). Indeed, sequential bilateral TKA present several benefits, as one single anesthesia, surgical episode, hospitalization, and rehabilitation. The purpose of our study was to evaluate peri-operative outcomes and compare the complication rates, clinical outcomes, and implant positioning of sequential bilateral TKA performed with a robotic-assisted system versus a conventional technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS All patients who underwent a sequential bilateral robotic-assisted primary TKA (raTKA) in our institution between November 2019 and February 2021 were included. Twenty patients met the inclusion criteria and were matched with 20 sequential bilateral TKA performed with a conventional technique. The two groups were comparable for the demographic data and the preoperative parameters, including preoperative anticoagulation and ASA score. The minimum follow-up was 6 months. RESULTS The operative time was significantly longer in the robotic group (< 0.0001), with a mean additional time of 29 min. There was no significant difference between both groups for postoperative blood loss, rate of blood transfusion, or postoperative pain. The average length of stay was 5 days. There was one early complication in the robotic group due to the tibial trackers. The functional outcomes were similar between both groups, except for the functional KSS score, which was better at 6 months in the robotic group (p < 0.0001). The restoration of the knee alignment and the distal femoral anatomy were significantly better in the robotic group than in the conventional group. CONCLUSIONS Despite a longer operative time, the peri-operative parameters of sequential bilateral TKA were similar between robotic and conventional techniques. Further, sequential bilateral raTKA was at least as safe as a conventional technique, without additional risk of medical complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemic compression is widely used to clinically treat neck pain. However, no meta-analysis has been conducted to evaluate the effects of this process on neck pain. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ischemic compression on the myofascial trigger points for improving neck pain-related symptoms (mainly pain, joint mobility limitation and function limitation) and to compare ischemic compression with other therapies. METHODS Electronic searches were conducted in PubMed, OVID, Web of Science, EBSCO, SCOUPS, Cochrane Library, PEDro, Wanfang, CNKI and Chinese VIP Database in June 2021. Only randomised controlled trials on the effects of ischemic compression on neck pain were included. The major outcomes were pain intensity, pressure pain threshold, pain-related disability and range of motion. RESULTS Fifteen studies involving 725 participants were included. Significant differences were observed between ischemic compression and sham/no treatment group in pain intensity, pressure pain threshold and range of motion immediately and in the short term. Significant effect sizes of dry needling were observed over ischemic compression in terms of improving pain intensity (SMD = 0.62; 95% CI: 0.08 to 1.16; P= 0.02), pain-related disability (SMD = 0.68; 95% CI: 0.19 to 1.17; P= 0.007) and range of motion (MD =-2.12; 95% CI: -2.59 to -1.65; P< 0.001) immediately after treatment. Dry needling also showed a significant small effect size for the short-term reduction of pain (SMD = 0.44; 95% CI: 0.04 to 0.85; P= 0.03). CONCLUSION Ischemic compression can be recommended in the immediate and short-term pain relief and increase in the pressure pain threshold and range of motion. Dry needling is superior to ischemic compression in relieving pain and improving pain-related disability and range of motion immediately after treatment.

Abstract
Background Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a condition with local and referred pain characterized by trigger points (taut bands within the muscle). Ischemic compression is a noninvasive manual therapy technique that has been employed for the treatment of MPS in past decades. However, little attention has been devoted to this topic. Objectives The present review was designed to explore the efficacy of ischemic compression for myofascial pain syndrome by performing a descriptive systematic review and a meta-analysis to estimate the effect of ischemic compression on MPS. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis concerning randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with myofascial pain subjects who received ischemic compression versus placebo, sham, or usual interventions. Five databases (PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, Ovid) were searched from the earliest data available to 2022.1.2. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) were used for statistics. Version 2 of the Cochrane risk of tool 2 (RoB 2) was used to assess the quality of the included RCTs. Results Seventeen studies were included in the systematic review, and 15 studies were included in the meta-analysis. For the pressure pain threshold (PPT) index, 11 studies and 427 subjects demonstrated statistically significant differences compared with the control at posttreatment (SMD = 0.67, 95% CI [0.35, 0.98], P < 0.0001, I2 = 59%). For visual analog scale (VAS) or numeric rating scale (NRS) indices, 7 studies and 251 subjects demonstrated that there was no significant difference between ischemic compression and controls posttreatment (SMD = − 0.22, 95% CI [− 0.53, 0.09], P = 0.16, I2 = 33%). Conclusion Ischemic compression, as a conservative and noninvasive therapy, only enhanced tolerance to pain in MPS subjects compared with inactive control. Furthermore, there was no evidence of benefit for self-reported pain. The number of currently included subjects was relatively small, so the conclusion may be changed by future studies. Big scale RCTs with more subjects will be critical in future.

Abstract
Background Non-specific neck pain is the most prevailing musculoskeletal disorder which has a large socioeconomic burden worldwide. It is associated with poor posture and neck strain which may lead to pain and restricted mobility. Physical therapists treat such patients through several means. Post isometric relaxation and Myofascial release therapy are used in clinical practice with little evidence to be firmed appropriately. So, this study was conducted to explore the effect of Post-isometric relaxation in comparison to Myofascial release therapy for patients having non-specific neck pain. Methodology Sixty patients were randomly allocated to Post isometric group and the Myofascial group. The treatment period was of 2 weeks. All the patients were evaluated using the Visual analogue scale (VAS), Neck disability index (NDI), Universal Goniometer, and WHO BREF Quality of life-100 in the 1st and 6th sessions. Recorded data was entered on SPSS 21. Data were examined using two-way repeated ANOVA to measure the variance of analysis (group x time). Results Analysis of the baseline characteristics revealed that both groups were homogenous in terms of age and gender i.e. a total of 60 participants were included in this research study 30 in each group. Out of 60 patients, there were 20(33.3%) males and 40(66.7%) females with a mean age of 32.4(5.0) years. Participants in the Post Isometric group demonstrated significant improvements (p < 0.025) in VAS, NDI, Cervical Extension, left side rotation ranges, and QoL (Social Domain) at the 2-week follow-up compared with those in the Myofascial group. In addition, the Myofascial group indicated significantly better improvement in the mean score of CROM (flexion and right and left side bending). Conclusion The study demonstrated patients with nonspecific neck pain can benefit from the post isometric relaxation with significant improvement in pain, disability, cervical ROM, and Quality of life compared with myofascial release therapy. Abstract
Introduction: Myofascial pain syndromes and upper crossed syndrome (UCS) are common phenomena observed in society. The main reasons for their formation are postural defects and chronic muscle overload. Trigger points (TP) develop within the affected muscles, generating pain and other symptoms that worsen quality of life. A popular method of therapy is ischaemic compression (IC) of trigger points and muscle energy techniques (MET). However, in literature on the subject, there is a lack information on the effects of a series of therapies with these techniques on the reduction of pain and muscle tension.
Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the optimal myofascial technique in the treatment of patients with UCS presenting with pain and excessive tension in the trapezius muscle.
Material and methods: In the study, 45 people with UCS with TP in the trapezius back muscle were qualified for the trial. The subjects were randomly divided into 3 equal groups. Group A underwent a series of 5 IC trigger point treatments, while group B received a series of 5 MET treatments. Group C was a control group not subjected to any therapeutic intervention. Changes in pain threshold and muscle resting electrophysiological values after the completion of the 5-week therapy intervention were assessed. The Statistica 13 program was used for statistical analysis of the data.
Results: A significant increase in pain threshold on both sides of the body was demonstrated in groups A and B, but not in group C. Comparison of pain changes between the right and left sides showed no significant differences between groups. There was a significant decrease regarding tension in group C on both sides of the body and its increase in group A on the right side, however, in each case, these values were within the physiological norms.
Conclusions: A series of 5 ischaemic compression treatments and muscle energy techniques are effective in reducing pain caused by latent trigger points in people with UCS but are not associated with changes in resting tension beyond physiological norms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ischemic pressure (IP) vs postisometric relaxation (PIR) on rhomboid-muscle latent trigger points (LTrPs). METHODS Forty-five participants with rhomboid-muscle LTrPs were randomly assigned into 3 groups and received 3 weeks of treatment-group A: IP and traditional treatment (infrared radiation, ultrasonic therapy, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation); group B: PIR and traditional treatment; and group C: traditional treatment. Shoulder pain and disability, neck pain and disability, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) of 3 points on each side were measured before and after treatment. RESULTS Multivariate analysis of variance indicated a statistically significant Group × Time interaction (P = .005). The PPT for the right lower point was increased in group A more than in groups B or C. Neck pain was reduced in group B more than in group C. Moreover, shoulder and neck disability were reduced in both groups A and B more than in group C. The PPTs of the left lower and middle points were increased in group B compared with groups A and C. The PPT of the left upper point was increased in group A more than in group C. There were significant changes in all outcomes in the 2 experimental groups (P < .05). No changes were found in the control group except in pain intensity, shoulder disability, and PPT of the left lower point. CONCLUSION This study found that IP may be more effective than PIR regarding PPT, but both techniques showed changes in the treatment of rhomboid-muscle LTrPs.

Abstract
Background: Non-specific neck pain (NNP) affects 30–50% of the general population, and it often leads to severe disability. Several manual therapy techniques are available to reduce pain and disability and to improve cervical range of motion and functional activities. Muscle Energy Technique (MET) showed more evidence for treating such a disorder. The aim of this current scientific literature analysis was to compare the clinical effects of MET with the other manual or rehabilitative treatments for non-specific acute and chronic neck pain. Methods: The literature search was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, Medline, PEDro, Cochrane Database, and Google Scholar from 2010 to January 2020. Clinical trials about MET were included. The quality of the trials was assessed according to the PEDro scale. Results: Twenty-one papers according to inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected: 15 studies about non-specific acute neck pain and 6 studies about non-specific chronic neck pain. Conclusions: This analysis suggests that the MET approach has a good clinical effect on reducing neck pain in patients with acute neck pain and improves cervical range of motion in patients with chronic neck pain, and is better if combined with a traditional rehabilitative approach. This review’s findings should be considered with caution for physiotherapy practice because of the studies’ methodologic limitations. On the basis of the current available and limited evidence, clinicians could combine MET with traditional physiotherapy and other manual techniques when treating people with non-specific neck pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is the most common form of muscle disorders. Traditional Thai massage (TM) and muscle energy (ME) technique have been used to treat patients with MPS for long time but head-to-head comparisons of these interventions have not been established. AIM The aim of the current study was to compare the effects of TM and the ME technique on pain intensity (PI), pressure pain threshold (PPT), neck disability (ND), and neck flexion range of motion (NFROM) in patients with chronic neck pain associated with myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). DESIGN A randomized, single-blinded clinical trial. SETTING Department of Physical Therapy, School of Integrative Medicine, Mae Fah Luang University. POPULATION Forty-five patients with chronic neck pain associated with MTrPs were recruited. METHODS The patients were randomly allocated to the TM, ME, or control groups, with each having eight treatment sessions over a period of two weeks. PI, PPT, ND, and NFROM were assessed before, immediately after the first treatment session, and one day after the last treatment session. RESULTS Based on the results, both TM and the ME technique resulted in a significant improvement in all parameters (p < 0.05) compared to the control group. Additionally, no significant difference was observed between TM and the ME technique in all parameters. CONCLUSIONS The application of TM or the ME technique can be a practical alternative approach for the treatment of chronic neck pain associated with MTrPs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to conduct an updated systematic review of diagnostic criteria for myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) used in clinical trials of physical therapy interventions from 2007 to 2019. METHODS MEDLINE and Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) were searched using the following MeSH keywords: "trigger points," "trigger point," "myofascial trigger point," "myofascial trigger points," "myofascial pain," and "myofascial pain syndrome." The MeSH keywords were combined by using Boolean operators "OR"/"AND." All physiotherapy clinical trials including patients with musculoskeletal conditions characterized by at least 1 active MTrP or latent MTrP in any body area were selected. We pooled data from an individual criterion and criteria combinations used to diagnose MTrPs. The protocol was developed in accordance with the PRISMA-P guidelines. RESULTS Of 478 possibly relevant publications, 198 met the inclusion criteria. Of these 198 studies, 129 studies (65.1%) stated specifically the diagnostic criteria used for MTrPs in the main text, 56 studies (28.3%) failed to report any method whereby MTrP was diagnosed, and 13 studies (6.6%) adopted expert-based definitions for MTrPs without specification. Of 129 studies, the 6 criteria applied most commonly were: "spot tenderness" (n=125, 96.9%), "referred pain" (95, 73.6%), "local twitch response" (63, 48.8%), pain recognition (59, 45.7%), limited range of motion" (29, 22.5%), and "jump sign" (10, 7.8%). Twenty-three combinations of diagnostic criteria were identified. The most frequently used combination was "spot tenderness," "referred pain," and "local twitch response" (n=28 studies, 22%). CONCLUSIONS A number of the included studies failed in properly reporting the MTrP diagnostic criteria. Moreover, high variability in the use of MTrP diagnostic was also observed. Spot tenderness, referred pain, and local twitch response were the 3 most popular criteria (and the most frequently used combination). Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose this study was to investigate the reliability of a handheld myotonometer in measuring the mechanical properties of the neck and orofacial muscles in asymptomatic individuals. METHODS The study included 16 healthy participants. The mechanical properties (frequency, decrement, stiffness, relaxation time, and creep) of the selected muscles were measured with a MyotonPRO myotonometer (Mumeetria Ltd, Tallinn, Estonia). The sternocleidomastoid, upper trapezius, cervical extensor, and masseter muscles were selected to determine the reliability of the device. Measurements were performed by 2 examiners to determine interrater reliability; for intrarater reliability, an examiner repeated the measurements 1 week after the first measurements. RESULTS The results revealed moderate to excellent intrarater and interrater reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients: 0.50-0.95) in measuring muscle mechanic properties. The standard error of measurement in the tested muscles ranged from 0.3 to 0.8 Hz for frequency, from 7.4 to 20.9 N/m for stiffness, from 0.1 to 0.2 for decrement, and from 0.8 to 1.4 ms for relaxation time. The minimum detectable change ranged from 0.8 to 2.2 Hz for frequency, from 20.5 to 57.9 N/m for stiffness, from 0.2 to 0.6 for decrement, from 2.2 to 3.9 ms for relaxation time, and from 0.2 to 0.3 for creep. In addition, the coefficients of variation were below 9.1% for all the assessed parameters. CONCLUSION The obtained results demonstrate that the MyotonPRO device is a reliable and repeatable tool to quantify the frequency, stiffness, decrement, relation time, and creep of the neck and orofacial muscles in asymptomatic individuals.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effects of trigger point dry needling (TrP-DN) on exercise-induced patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS). Patients and Methods In this randomized, single-blind, parallel-group trial, 50 patients with PFPS were randomly allocated to the following two groups: the TrP-DN group (n = 25) and the Sham needling group (n = 25). Patients in both groups were asked to perform a stretching exercise of the quadriceps daily after needling. The needling group received a single session of TrP-DN to trigger points (TrPs) in the vastus medialis oblique (VMO), vastus lateralis (VL), and rectus femoris muscles (once a week for 6 weeks), and the Sham group received placebo needling. Visual analogue scale (VAS) for pain intensity and Kujala questionnaire for the functional status were assessed before treatment, 3 and 6 weeks after treatment, and at the 3-month follow-up. The ratio of the myoelectric amplitude of the vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscles (VMO/VL) was assessed before treatment and 6 weeks after treatment. Results There was no significant difference in the general data between the two groups. The VAS scores and Kujala scores in the TrP-DN group were significantly improved and increased at the 3-week treatment visit, 6-week treatment visit, and 3-month follow-up compared to the scores before treatment; and the scores in the Sham group were only significantly improved at the 3-week treatment visit, and 6-week treatment visit. VAS scores in the TrP-DN group were significantly lower and Kujala scores were significantly higher at the 6-week treatment visit and the 3-month follow-up compared to those in the Sham group. The VMO/VL ratio in the TrP-DN group was significantly increased at the 6-week treatment visit compared to that before treatment. Conclusion TrP-DN at the quadriceps combined with stretch can reduce the pain, and improves the clinical symptoms and function, the VMO/VL ratio, and the coordination of VMO and VL in patients with PFPS.

Abstract
Myofascial pain syndrome, thought to be the main cause of neck pain and shoulder muscle tenderness in the working population, is characterized by myofascial trigger points (MTrPs). This study aimed to examine the immediate and short-term effect of the combination of two therapeutic techniques for improving neck pain and muscle tenderness in male patients with upper trapezius active MTrPs. This study was a pretest-posttest single-blinded randomized controlled trial. Sixty male subjects with mechanical neck pain due to upper trapezius active MTrPs were recruited and randomly allocated into group A, which received muscle energy technique (MET) and ischemic compression technique (ICT) along with conventional intervention; group B, which received all the interventions of group A except ICT; and group C, which received conventional treatment only. Baseline (Pr), immediate postintervention (Po), and 2-week follow-up (Fo) measurements were made for all variables. Pain intensity and pressure pain threshold (PPT) were assessed by a visual analog scale (VAS) and pressure threshold meter, respectively. All the three groups received their defined intervention plans only. Repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to perform intra- and intergroup analyses. Cohen's d test was used to assess the effect size of the applied interventions within the groups. The intergroup analysis revealed significant differences among groups A, B, and C in VAS and PPT at Po (VAS-Po: F = 13.88, p=0.0001; PPT-Po: F = 17.17, p=0.0001) and even after 2 weeks of follow-up (VAS-Fo: F = 222.35, p=0.0001; PPT-Fo: F = 147.70, p=0.0001). Cohen's d revealed a significant treatment effect size within all groups except group C (only significant for VAS-Po-VAS-Pr: mean difference = 1.33, p < 0.05, d = 1.09); however, it showed a maximum effect size in group A for its variables (VAS-Fo-VAS-Pr: mean difference = 5.27, p=0.01, d = 4.04; PPT-Fo-PPT-Pr: mean difference = 2.14, p < 0.01, d = 3.89). Combination therapies (MET plus ICT) showed immediate and short-term (2-week follow-up) improvements in neck pain and muscle tenderness in male patients with upper trapezius active MTrPs.
