Smart Textile Sock System for Athletes’ Self-Correction during Functional Tasks: Formative Usability Evaluation

(1) Background: The development of a lightweight, easy-to-use system that measures the foot’s plantar pressure is becoming an increasingly important area of research in physiotherapy. For further development of the smart sock system, a formative usability study was conducted, where the smart textile sock sensor system was used for self-correction during functional tasks; (2) Methods: Five athletes from the football school participated in the formative usability study. Athletes performed pre-defined functional tasks for self-correction when interacting with the smart textile sock system. Formative usability evaluation methods: effectiveness (task success rate, error rate), efficiency (time-based), satisfaction evaluated by System Usability Scale (SUS); (3) Results: Formative usability indicators: task completeness effectiveness ranged from 40% to 100% in the first- and second-stage tasks. Completed task efficiency time: Stage 1, from 4.2 s (SD 1.3) to 88.8 s (SD 19.8); Stage 2, from 7.2 s (SD 1.9) to 9.6 s (SD 2.1). Satisfaction was assessed by the SUS system user group with 76 points (SD 7.42), which indicates “good” satisfaction; (4) Conclusions: formative usability indicators showed the need for technical improvements to the smart textile sock pressure sensor system. The SUS results indicate “good” satisfaction with the smart textile sock pressure sensor system and its application.

Formative Study on the Wearability and Usability of a Large-Volume Patch Injector

Background

The subcutaneous self-administration of biologics using a single large-volume bolus dose requires novel large-volume patch injectors. However, the usability and wearability of such on-body devices has rarely been investigated thus far. Therefore, this formative simulated use experiment studies the overall handling and acceptability in terms of the size and weight of a novel 10 mL large-volume patch injector device platform.

Methods

Twenty-three participants, including patients and healthcare professionals, simulated two injections with the large-volume patch injector, each lasting 17 min. During the injections, the patient participants performed predefined movements and activities with the on-body devices. Perceived usability and wearability were assessed through observation by the moderator and participant-reported feedback using five-point Likert scales and open-ended interviews.

Results

All participants successfully completed the simulated injections. Only non-serious usability issues were identified. Users rated the device acceptability in terms of wearability and usability with high ratings.

Conclusion

The results suggest the safe and effective usage of a novel prefilled large-volume patch injector that enables the subcutaneous delivery of a single bolus dose of up to 10 mL with an injection duration of 15 min. The participants of the simulated use study successfully used the device regardless of the disease state, age, or body size and habitus.

Formative and Validation Human Factors studies of a new disposable autoinjector for subcutaneous delivery of chronic disease therapies

BACKGROUND

Use-related risks related to autoinjector devices have been previously identified. To minimize these problems, the identification of potential use errors is a critical task during device development.

METHODS

This article presents iterative human factor studies, which aim to assess user interaction with the tested push-on-skin BD Intevia™ 1 mL Disposable Autoinjector, across a wide range of indications, and a broad user population.

RESULTS

Through the different human factor studies, use errors were recorded when the participants completed the critical tasks, but their occurrence continuously decreased. First, the incidence of use errors was reduced when the participants read the IFU. In addition, the IFU updates and design change implemented contributed to improve the usability performance. During the validation study, some use errors were still observed, mainly during the first uses. Nevertheless, providing a training to the participants almost fully eliminated the remaining use errors.

CONCLUSION

Thus, these results demonstrated that this new autoinjector can be safely and efficiently used for its intended uses and under the expected use conditions by all tested user groups.

Evaluating the usability and safety of the semaglutide single-dose pen-injectors through summative (human factors) usability testing

AIMS/INTRODUCTION

A single-dose, shield-activated pen-injector for each of the three approved dose variants (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg) of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide has been developed to improve usability. This analysis presents findings from the summative usability testing process for the single-dose semaglutide pen-injectors, including the pen-injector four-pack cartons and instructions for use.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A total of 60 adults representing four user groups were included: patients with/without pen-injector experience, non-pharmacist healthcare professionals and pharmacists (each n = 15). Participants carried out four tasks: (i) pen-injector carton retrieval; (ii) first simulated injection; (iii) pen-injector retrieval; and (iv) second simulated injection. All participants carried out task 1, and patients and non-pharmacist healthcare professionals took part in tasks 2-4 (n = 45). The number and types of use errors, close calls and operational difficulties were evaluated, and participants subjectively rated the ease of each task on a scale of 1 (difficult) to 7 (easy).

RESULTS

No potentially serious use errors and only one non-serious use error were reported. Eight participants committed use errors with no potential for harm, one participant committed an unclassified use error, one participant encountered a close call with no potential for harm and one participant experienced an operational difficulty. Mean ease-of-use ratings were 6.7 (task 1), 5.9 (task 2), 6.6 (task 3) and 6.9 (task 4).

CONCLUSIONS

All three dose variants of the semaglutide single-dose pen-injector were considered easy to use (subjective feedback scores near 7) and not associated with any serious use errors, even when participants received no training before study participation.

DropSafe safety pen needle helps to prevent accidental needlesticks after injections: results of a simulated clinical study

Background

Most needlestick injuries (NSIs) result from unsafe needle devices. DropSafe safety pen needle (SPN) was designed to help prevent such injuries before, during and after use through a built-in sharps injury prevention feature (SIPF).

Methods

A two-phase study was undertaken. For the pilot study, five non-healthcare users (NHCUs) performed evaluations. For the validation study, 30 evaluators comprising 10 healthcare professionals (HCPs) and 20 NHCUs performed evaluations. The aim of the study was to validate the performance of the SIPF of the SPN and to collect feedback from the evaluators on several aspects of the safety device. Participants performed simulated injections into an orange.

Results

The results show that no device failures were observed, and all manipulations were performed without a needlestick or without contact with the needle after injection. The safety feature of the SPN was activated successfully. It was shown that: the label on the seal was legible; the SPNs were easy to attach to the pen injector; injections were easy to perform; it was clear when safety feature was activated; removing the SPN from the injection pen was easy; and the written instructions were easy to understand.

Conclusion

The performance of the safety feature of SPN was successfully evaluated in terms of the prevention of NSIs. User feedback demonstrate that the device's ease of use, handling and instructions for use ensure safety and effectiveness of the SPN when used as intended.
