Abstract
AIM The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between parental attitudes toward childhood epilepsy and spiritual orientations. METHODS This descriptive study was conducted online between May and July 2022 with 417 parents residing in the eastern part of Turkey. Data were collected using a descriptive information form, the Social Attitudes Scale toward Childhood Epilepsies, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS software package, employing descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, as well as inferential statistics including independent samples t-test, ANOVA, multiple linear regression and correlation tests. RESULTS The Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies was calculated as 45.10 ± 7.81, and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score was 89.88 ± 30.30 for parents with an average age of 36.64 ± 8.26. It was found statistically significant and high (p > 0.05) for parents who are female, have a higher level of education, and have previously received education about epilepsy regarding both the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the Total Social Attitudes Scale Score toward Childhood Epilepsies and the Spiritual Orientation Scale Score. CONCLUSION According to the findings of the research, parents' attitudes towards childhood epilepsy are positive, and their spiritual orientation levels are high. As parents' spiritual orientation levels increase, their positive attitudes towards childhood epilepsy also increase.

Abstract
One of the epileptic patients' challenges is to detect the time of seizures and the possibility of predicting. This research aims to provide an algorithm based on deep learning to detect and predict the time of seizure from one to two minutes before its occurrence. The proposed Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) can detect and predict the occurrence of focal epilepsy seizures through single-lead-ECG signal processing instead of using EEG signals. The structure of the proposed CNN for seizure detection and prediction is the same. Considering the requirements of a wearable system, after a few light pre-processing steps, the ECG signal can be used as input to the neural network without any manual feature extraction step. The desired neural network learns purposeful features according to the labelled ECG signals and then performs the classification of these signals. Training of 39-layer CNN for seizure detection and prediction has been done separately. The proposed method can detect seizures with an accuracy of 98.84% and predict them with an accuracy of 94.29%. With this approach, the ECG signal can be a promising indicator for the construction of portable systems for monitoring the status of epileptic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to assess knowledge, practices and attitudes of the general Moroccan population towards epilepsy and to highlight predictive factors. METHOD A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Casablanca-Settat Moroccan region. A questionnaire was used to collect sociodemographic data and item answers from 400 people with epilepsy (PWE) and without epilepsy caregivers on dependent variables: knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards epilepsy. Bivariate and logistic regression analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 21.0. Statistical significance was set when P value < 0.05. RESULTS The rates of poor knowledge, practices, and attitudes toward epilepsy were 11.5 %, 41 %, and 66.6 %, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, the risk of having poor knowledge about epilepsy was favored by lack of education (ORa = 4.31;CI95%:1.83-10.13;p = 0.001) and the absence of familiarity with epilepsy (ORa = 4.05;CI95%:1.92-8.54;p < 0.001). The risk of preferring allopathic practices to treat epilepsy was associated with lack of education (ORa = 2.21;CI95%:1.01-4.82;p = 0.046), residence in a city outside Casablanca (ORa = 2.33;CI95%:1.06-5.15;p = 0.035), age over 59 years (ORa = 2.50;CI95%:1.26-4.95; p = 0.008), residence in a rural areas (ORa = 4.41;CI95%:2.61-7.47;p < 0.001) and absence of familiarity with epilepsy (ORa = 4.08;CI95%:2.33-7.15;p < 0.001). Predictors of stigma towards epilepsy were female sex (ORa = 3.05;CI95%:2.04-4.56;p < 0.001) and the tendency to abandon anti-seizure medication for allopathic alternatives (ORa = 3.98;CI95%:2.21-7.17;p < 0.001), whereas advanced age was a protective factor (ORa = 0.57;CI95%:0.36-0.89;p = 0.014[39-59 years vs 18-29 years];ORa = 0.44;CI95%:0.23-0.82;p = 0.011[>59 years vs 18-29 years]). CONCLUSIONS The rate of poor attitudes and treatment-seeking behavior was high. This socio-cultural context certainly impacts the quality of life and care of Moroccan PWE. These results should be considered to raise awareness in the Moroccan population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to show the pooled prevalence of unfavorable public attitude toward people with epilepsy (UPATPWE) as well as the effect estimates of associated factors in Ethiopia. METHODS Between December 1 and 31, 2022, we searched for the English version of published research reports on public attitude toward epilepsy in Ethiopia in PubMed/Medline, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and PsycINFO. The research reports' quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. We extracted the relevant information from the searched papers in a Microsoft Excel format and imported it to STATA version 15.0, for analysis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) reports guideline was used. A random-effects meta-analysis model was used to estimate the Der Simonian and Laird's pooled prevalence of unfavorable public attitude and its associated factors. RESULTS Nine out of the accessed 104 research papers meeting the pre-specified criteria were included in this study. The overall pooled prevalence of UPATPWE in Ethiopia is 52.06 (95% CI: 37.54, 66.59), resulting in excommunication, physical punishments, and assaults against people with epilepsy as well as frequent lack of diagnosis and proper treatment. The pooled effect estimates for witnessing a seizure episode were done and it was (AOR = 2.70 [95% CI: 1.13, 6.46]). SIGNIFICANCE As interventions and new strategies to change attitudes and facilitate a supportive, positive, and socially inclusive environment for PWE may root in education and scientific research outputs, our result hopefully evokes the policy makers' attention for building a well-designed and comprehensive health education and campaign strategy.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated medical students' knowledge and attitudes toward epilepsy and the influence of metacognition thereon. METHOD Valid questionnaires were administered to medical students including undergraduate, professional postgraduate, and standardized residency training students (N = 503). The questionnaire had 4 parts: demographic information, knowledge of epilepsy, attitudes toward epilepsy, and metacognitive assessment. The Chinese Public Attitudes Toward Epilepsy scale and 30-Item Metacognition Questionnaire were used to assess attitudes and metacognition, respectively. RESULTS Almost all participants had heard of epilepsy; 38.8% had witnessed a seizure and 25% were acquainted with a person with epilepsy. The proportion of correct answers to epilepsy-related knowledge ranged from 40.6% (Putting an object into the mouth of a person experiencing an epileptic seizure) to 97% (Convulsion is a symptom of epilepsy). However, knowledge of epilepsy was not able to affect attitudes toward epilepsy. Age, years of clinical experience, having witnessed a seizure, positive belief of worry, and need to control thinking were correlated with the different domains of attitude toward epilepsy. When participants were divided into 2 groups-i.e., those with high and low knowledge of epilepsy, participants in the former group who had a positive belief of worry or had not witnessed any seizures were more likely to have negative attitudes toward epilepsy. CONCLUSION Medical students showed good awareness of the etiology and symptoms of epilepsy. Overall, attitudes toward epilepsy were negative. A positive belief of worry was associated with a more negative attitude toward epilepsy among respondents with greater knowledge of epilepsy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In Germany, six previous representative surveys on attitudes toward epilepsy (AE) have been conducted between 1967 and 2008 using the four original Caveness questions (CQs) from 1949 to 1980. The aims of this study were (1) to investigate changes in AE over the time span of 50 years, including the current survey in 2018 (2) to investigate the first-time emotional reactions measured with the Scales of Attitudes toward People with Epilepsy (SAPE) (3) to identify predictors of AE. METHODS A representative face-to-face survey with CQ, in addition with the SAPE scales of Social Distance, Stereotypes, Personal Concerns, and Emotional Reactions was carried out in Germany in 2018. One thousand and twenty-six persons who ever had heard of epilepsy participated. Respondents who answered "don't know" in the CQs were subsequently asked to answer only yes/no. The analysis of trends from 1967 to 2018 was based on the pooled data of the surveys. The four CQs in the 2018 survey were included in the SAPE item pool and an exploratory principal axis factor analysis was performed. General linear models were performed to identify predictors. RESULTS For all four CQs, the trend of improved AE was significant over the past 50 years. In the 2018 survey, excluding the "don't know" answer option increased the proportion of negative responses for contact of one's own children with a person with epilepsy (PWE) from 6.9% to 11.4% and for the marriage of one's own children with a PWE from 13.9% to 23.8%. When encountering a PWE, 30.1% would feel insecure or uncomfortable and nearly 60% were concerned that the PWE might be injured in case of a seizure. Knowing what to do in case of a seizure, knowing that seizures can be treated successfully, personal contact with a PWE along with younger age, and higher education were found to be the strongest predictors for positive AE identified by multivariate analyses. Exploratory principal axis factor analysis revealed that three of the four CQs items loaded > 0.30 at the factors of Social Distance and Stereotypes of SAPE but none on the factors measuring emotional reactions. SIGNIFICANCE AE measured by CQs have markedly improved in Germany over the last 50 years. Germany is to our knowledge the only country with such a long-term trend investigation in AE. Negative AE may be underestimated by survey questions with "don't know" answer option. Emotional aspects of attitudes are underexposed resp. neglected in the CQs, which are used worldwide for measuring AE. Additional tools like SAPE can close this gap. The identified predictors may help to derive interventions against negative AE.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epilepsy is a global problem that affects all countries and people of all ages. However, the disease burden is high in low- and middle-income countries. Poor public knowledge of epilepsy increases the rate of stigma and discrimination. However, in our country, there is a scarcity of summarized evidence about the level of public knowledge toward epilepsy. Therefore, to fill this gap, conducting this review and meta-analysis has a preponderant significance. METHODS Articles were explored from PubMed, PsycINFO, Hinari, Science Direct, web of science, and African journal of online (AJOL) databases, Google, and Google scholar. For data extraction and analysis purposes, Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and STATA software version 16 were used. To write this report, we used the Preferred Reporting Items for systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis. To assess the pooledmagnitudeof public knowledge toward epilepsy, we used arandom-effects meta-analysis model. We checked the Heterogeneity by I2. To detect publication bias, Begg's test, Egger's test, and funnel plot were conducted. Furthermore, subgroup analysis was conducted. Association was expressed through a pooled odds ratio with a 95% confidence interval. RESULT Our review and meta-analysis included 9 studies with 5658 participants. The pooled magnitude of poor knowledge toward epilepsy was 48.54% [95% CI (33.57, 63.51)]. I2 was 99.4% (P < 0.01). Begg's and Egger's test results were 0.92 and 0.06, respectively. Cannot read and write OR: 2.86 [95 CI (2.04, 4.00]) and not witnessing seizure episode OR: 3.00 [95% CI (2.46, 3.66)]) were significant determinants of poor knowledge. CONCLUSION In this review and meta-analysis, around half of the participants had poor knowledge about epilepsy. Individuals who cannot read and write, and could not witness seizure episodes had more likely to have poor knowledge toward epilepsy as compared to their counterparts. Health education through different methods should be provided to the public, and our educational system should focus on this global problem. Furthermore, it is better to give training for community key informants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to test the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the epilepsy stigma scale (ESS), which aims to better understand the stigma of patients with epilepsy (PWEs), lays the foundation for future investigation and explores appropriate strategies to mitigate PWEs' stigma in Chinese culture. METHODS The scale was translated following standard procedures. For psychometric validation, the Chinese version of the ESS was administered to 214 PWEs above the age of 16 who were diagnosed with epilepsy by two trained epileptologists and were taking anti-seizure drugs for at least a month. All of the patients were recruited from Xiangya Hospital of Central South University of China from August 2021 to September 2021. RESULTS The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.893 for the entire scale, 0.903 for felt stigma, and 0.688 for enacted stigma. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted and showed that the scale was grouped under two dimensions, and the results of confirmatory factor analysis support the structure. CONCLUSION The Chinese version of the ESS is a valid and reliable tool to assess epilepsy-related stigma in Chinese culture.

Abstract
PROBLEM Prejudices can impair social participation of people with epilepsy. METHODS From 2019 to 2020, we invited people with epilepsy and their relatives across Germany to fill in a questionnaire. RESULTS Two hundred and thirty people with epilepsy (PWE, median age: 40 years; min./max.: 19/83; 66% female) and 103 relatives (REL, median age: 42 years; min./max. 23/70; 83% female) took part in the survey. 44% PWE and 40% REL said prejudices against PWE had not declined in recent years. Of PWE, 64% reported they had experienced prejudices themselves. In an open question with multiple answers possible, 71% of the PWE described concrete prejudices against PWE, 62% of the REL did so. The reported prejudices concerned symptoms of epilepsy (37% PWE; 23% REL), academic or occupational performance (47% PWE; 38% REL), social or family life (27% PWE, 29% REL), and other topics (7% PWE, 4% REL). Of PWE, 88% said all or almost all relatives knew about their condition, 74% stated this applied to all or almost all friends, and 48% told all or almost all colleagues about their epilepsy. Of PWE, 94% would want to know if a relative had epilepsy, 87% would like to know about a friend's epilepsy, 70% about a colleague's epilepsy. Fear of stigmatization was a reason for not always communicating the condition according to 20% PWE and 63% REL. None of PWE and 16% of REL named shame as a reason. CONCLUSION People with epilepsy still experience prejudices and fear of stigmatization hinders an open communication about the condition.
