Abstract
BACKGROUND Understanding predictors of suicidal ideation (SI) is crucial for preventing suicides. Given Europe's high suicide rates and the complex nature of SI, it is essential to also examine social determinants like education as potential risk factors for SI in this region. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the association between formal/vocational education and SI in Europe. METHODS Electronic databases (PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, PSYNDEX) were searched until November 2022. Included studies involved European populations examining associations between education and SI. Pooled Odds Ratios (OR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were calculated using random-effects models. Heterogeneity was assessed with the heterogeneity variance τ2 and I2 statistic; subgroup analyses were performed based on study characteristics. Risk of bias was assessed using an adaption of the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. RESULTS From 20,564 initial studies, 41 were included in the meta-analysis (outlier-adjusted, 96,809 study participants). A negative, insignificant association (OR = 0.86, 95 % CI: 0.75; 1.00) was observed between education and SI, with significant heterogeneity (τ2 = 0.09, I2 = 73 %). Subgroup analyses indicated that population type, age group, categorization of education, timeframe of SI assessment, and study quality significantly moderated the effect size. LIMITATIONS Heterogeneity across studies limits generalizability. The cross-sectional design precludes establishing causal relationships, and social desirability bias may have underestimated the association between education and SI. CONCLUSIONS This systematic review and meta-analysis suggests a trend towards a protective effect of education on the emergence of SI in Europe. Future research, preferably with longitudinal study design examining various covariates, should systematically consider educational inequalities in SI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Detection of suicidal ideation (SI) is key for trying to prevent suicide. The aim of this study was to analyze the frequency of SI and related factors in Spanish people with Parkinson's Disease (PwPD) and to compare them with a control group. METHODS PD patients and controls recruited from the Spanish cohort COPPADIS from January 2016 to November 2017 were included. Two visits were conducted: V0 (baseline); V2 (2-year ± 1 month follow-up). SI was defined as a score ≥1 on item nine of the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Regression analyses were conducted to identify factors related to SI. RESULTS At baseline, 693 PwPD (60.2% males; 62.59 ± 8.91 years old) and 207 controls (49.8% males; 60.99 ± 8.32 years old) were included. No differences between PwPD and controls were detected in SI frequency at either V0 (5.1% [35/693] vs. 4.3% [9/207]; p = 0.421) or at V2 (5.1% [26/508] vs. 4.8% [6/125]; p = 0.549). Major depression (MD) and a worse quality of life were associated with SI at both visits in PwPD: V0 (MD, OR = 5.63; p = 0.003; PDQ-39, OR = 1.06; p = 0.021); V2 (MD, OR = 4.75; p = 0.027; EUROHIS-QOL8, OR = 0.22; p = 0.006). A greater increase in the BDI-II total score from V0 to V2 was the only factor predicting SI at V2 (OR = 1.21; p = 0.002) along with an increase in the total number of non-antiparkinsonian drugs (OR = 1.39; p = 0.041). CONCLUSION The frequency of SI (5%) in PwPD was similar to in controls. Depression, a worse quality of life, and a greater comorbidity were related to SI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients with early-onset Parkinson's disease (EOPD) often suffer from more frequent depression than those with late-onset Parkinson's disease (LOPD). However, the clinical characteristics of suicidal ideation (SI) in EOPD remains unknown. This study aimed to explore the prevalence, related factors, and predictive factors of SI in EOPD patients as well as comparison of the prevalence in LOPD patients. METHODS We conducted a case-control, cross-sectional, and longitudinal study. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to balance the characteristics between EOPD (N = 577) and LOPD patients (N = 2973). The diagnosis of SI was based on the assessment of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). EOPD patients with a disease duration < 5 years (N = 96) were prospectively followed-up for exploring the predictors for the development of SI. Two forward binary logistic regression models were respectively used to explore the associated and predictive factors of SI. RESULTS After PSM, EOPD patients showed significantly higher prevalence of SI than LOPD patients (22.0 vs. 13.3%, P < 0.001). Twenty EOPD patients (20.8%) developed SI and none of them reported suicidal behaviors after a median of 2.7 (IQR = 1.6-4.1) years. Depression, dyskinesia, non-smoking, lower education, and higher Non-Motor Symptoms Scale (NMSS) score were independently associated with the presence of SI. Depression at baseline was the only independent risk factor for the future occurrence of SI. CONCLUSIONS Our study highlights the necessity to screen SI in patients with EOPD especially for those with depression.

Abstract
Persons with Parkinson's disease (PwP) have many known risk factors for suicide and suicidal ideation (SI). Despite this, there is limited understanding of suicidality in this population. We conducted a systematic review to synthesise the available literature on suicidality in PwP and highlight areas for potential intervention and further research. We identified 116 articles discussing SI, suicidal behaviours, suicide attempts and/or fatal suicide in PwP. These articles describe prevalence, suicide methods, risk factors for suicide and SI and treatment of suicidality. In this review, we summarise the current literature and provide suggestions for how clinicians can identify and treat PwP who are at risk for suicide, for example, through aggressive treatment of depression and improved screening for access to lethal means.

Abstract
This review aims to shed light on the relationship that involves exposure to early life stress, depression and Parkinson's disease (PD). A systematic literature search was conducted in Pubmed, MEDLINE, EBSCOHost and Google Scholar and relevant data were submitted to a meta-analysis . Early life stress may contribute to the development of depression and patients with depression are at risk of developing PD later in life. Depression is a common non-motor symptom preceding motor symptoms in PD. Stimulation of regions contiguous to the substantia nigra as well as dopamine (DA) agonists have been shown to be able to attenuate depression. Therefore, since PD causes depletion of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra, depression, rather than being just a simple mood disorder, may be part of the pathophysiological process that leads to PD. It is plausible that the mesocortical and mesolimbic dopaminergic pathways that mediate mood, emotion, and/or cognitive function may also play a key role in depression associated with PD. Here, we propose that a medication designed to address a deficiency in serotonin is more likely to influence motor symptoms of PD associated with depression. This review highlights the effects of an antidepressant, Fluvoxamine maleate, in an animal model that combines depressive-like symptoms and Parkinsonism.

Abstract
Background: Common functional Val158Met polymorphism in the Catechol-O-methyltransferase
(COMT) gene may have an impact on an individual’s susceptibility to suicide, but individually published
results are inconclusive. Therefore, we performed this meta-analysis to provide a more precise
estimation of the association between COMT 158G/A (COMT Val158Met) polymorphism and suicide
susceptibility.
Study design: A cross-sectional study.
Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis is a comprehensive literature search of PubMed,
Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases was conducted on case-control studies
published up to Mar 2017. Crude odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were
calculated.
Results: We identified 14 eligible case-control studies, including 2353 suicide attempters and 2593
controls. The pooled results indicated that COMT 158G/A (COMT Val158Met) polymorphism was not
significantly associated with increased overall suicide risk. The same results were revealed based on
ethnicity, Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) status and genotyping technique. However, there was
significant association between COMT Val158Met polymorphism and suicide risk among females
under the homozygote (AA vs. GG: OR=1.829, 95% CI=1.158-2.889, P=0.010) and recessive (AA vs.
AG +GG: OR = 1.787, 95% CI=1.195, 2.671, P=0.005) models, but not among males.
Conclusions: COMT 158G/A (COMT Val158Met) polymorphism was associated with suicide
susceptibility only in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Parkinson's disease (PD) has a major impact on mobility, as well as cognition which can consequently impair aspects of individual's lives. Many studies have examined the living experiences of individuals with PD and its impact on their daily lives. None of these studies have explored the life experiences of Jordanian individuals living with PD. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe the daily living experiences and impact on lives of Jordanian individuals with PD. METHODS A qualitative phenomenological design was used. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Transcripts were analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Experiences of 8 Jordanian individuals with PD who participated in this study can be categorized in the following major themes: (1) challenging perspectives and (2) adaptations. Challenging perspectives included stigma, emotional drainer, and experience of decreased independence and difficulty in occupational performance. Adaptations included embracing early acceptance and intervention, spiritual experience, and family support. CONCLUSIONS Study provided a wealth of knowledge related to the effect of PD and its intersection with the Arabic Jordanian culture. Such knowledge should aid healthcare professionals involved with providing services to Jordanian individuals with PD to provide better holistic services.

We aimed to examine association between disordered eating attitudes (DEAs), alexithymia and suicide probability among adolescent females and to explore potential link between alexithymia and suicide probability in subjects with DEAs. 381 female students completed Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and Suicide Probability Scale (SPS). It was found that 13.2% (n=52) of the subjects have DEAs. Results indicated that total TAS-20 score and scores of Difficulty in Identifying Feelings (DIF) and Difficulty in Describing Feelings (DDF) subscales were significantly higher in DEAs group than in those non DEAs group (p<0.05). Additionally, total SPS score (p<0.001), Hopelessness (p=0.001), Suicide Ideation (p<0.001) and Hostility (p=0.003) subscales scores of SPS were significantly higher in the alexithymic DEAs than the non-alexithymic DEAs group. In order to control potential effect of depression, SPS subscales were used as covariate factors in ANCOVA. Negative Self-Evaluation subscale yielded a statistically significant difference between groups, other subscales did not. Results point out these; DEAs are relatively frequent phenomenon among female students in Turkey and presence of alexithymia was associated with an increased suicide probability in adolescents with DEAs. The results should be evaluated taking into account that depressive symptomatology was not assessed using a depression scale.

Abstract
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative diseases which typically affects individuals over 65 years. Although the symptomatology is predominantly motor, neuropsychiatric manifestations, e.g., depression, apathy, anxiety, and cognitive impairment occur in the course of the illness and can have a great impact on the quality of life in these patients. Parkinson’s disease is commonly comorbid with depression with prevalence rates of depression, generally higher than those reported in general population. Depression in PD is frequently underestimated and consequently undertreated, which have significant effects on the quality of life in these patients. The neurobiology of depression in PD is complex and involves alterations in dopaminergic, serotonergic, noradrenergic and possibly other neurotransmitter systems which are affected in the course of the disease. The tricyclic antidepressants and the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the two classes of antidepressant drugs used for depressive symptoms in PD. Several published studies suggested that both classes are of comparable efficacy. Other serotonergic antidepressants, e.g., nefazodone and trazodone have also been of benefit. Meanwhile, there are limited data available on other drugs but these suggest a benefit from the serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors such as mirtazapine, venlafaxine, atomoxetine and duloxetine. Some of the drugs used in symptomatic treatment of PD, e.g., the irreversible selective inhibitors of the enzyme monoamine oxidase-B, rasagiline and selegiline as well as the dopamine receptor agonist pramipexole are likely to have direct antidepressant activity independent of their motor improving action. This would make these drugs an attractive option in depressed subjects with PD. The aim of this review is to provide an updated data on the prevalence, clinical features of depression in subjects with PD. The effects of antiparkinsonian and antidepressant drugs on depressive symptoms in these patients are also discussed.
