Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a growing interest in the role of immune and inflammatory responses in mental disorders (MDs). Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an extensively utilized hemogram parameter that reflects systemic inflammation and immune function. Our research sought to determine whether a connection exists between MPV and various types of MDs. METHODS We searched PubMed, EMBASE, PsychINFO, and Web of Science for eligible studies from inception to 15 February 2023, supplemented by manual searching the references from relevant articles. We applied standardized mean difference (SMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) to estimate the differences in MPV values in patients with MDs compared to controls. RESULTS We analyzed data from 24 surveys with 4843 participants (2450 patients with MDs and 2393 healthy controls). Two-step meta-analyses were conducted to estimate the SMD in MPV value between individuals with and without MDs. Higher MPV values were substantially linked to MDs (i.e., depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia). Moderator and stratified analyses revealed that the aggregate effects were more robust in specific populations, such as younger patients and those who had not taken antipsychotic medication within the previous month. CONCLUSIONS Our findings corroborate the role of inflammatory response in the pathogenesis of MDs and the pharmacological treatment of these conditions. Regarding the considerable heterogeneity among studies, the level of evidence was very low to moderate.

Abstract
Platelets are increasingly considered a bridge between mental and immunological disorders. However, data relating to platelet parameters in patients with autoimmune disorders are limited. The aim of the present study was to investigate, for the first time, the association of platelet parameters with the symptoms of affective disorders in patients with autoimmune conditions. In this cross-sectional study, we measured the complete blood count (CBC), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale for anxiety (GAD-7), and the Beck Depression Inventory for depression (BDI) in 121 patients with autoimmune disorders. Mean platelet volume (MPV) was positively correlated with both anxiety and depression. Platelet distribution width (PDW) was negatively correlated with anxiety and depression. Before adjustment for covariates, logistic regression analysis revealed a significant association of MPV with depression and anxiety. After adjustment for covariates, only depression was associated with MPV. The area under the ROC curve of MPV for GAD-7 determined anxiety and BDI determined depression was 0.63. Our study showed that among the CBC hematological parameters, the MPV might be a useful biomarker of depression and anxiety in patients with autoimmune disorders. Further investigations of platelet parameters in controlled prospective studies are warranted to confirm our preliminary results.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio(NLR), Platelet/Lymphocyte Ratios(PLR), and Mean Platelet Volume(MPV), red blood cell distribution width(RDW) and leukocyte cell levels of patients with Axis-I psychiatric disease by comparing them with each other and healthy controls.
Material and Methods: A total of 600 people were included in our study, 500 of whom were taken as the patient and 100 as the control group. The diagnosis of patients according to DSM-5-Criteria were 34.8% Schizophrenia, 21% had Generalized-Anxiety-Disorder, 14.4% had Bipolar-Affective-Disorder, 14% had Major-Depressive-Disorder, 7.2% had Adjustment-Disorder, 4.2% had Schizoaffective-Disorder, 3.6% had other psychiatric illnesses.
Results: It was seen that hemoglobin, platelet, monocyte, blood platelet distribution (PCT), percentage account of RDW (RDW-CV) did not have statistically significant differences between groups (p values were 0.082, 0.214, 0.526, 0.082, 0.771, respectively). Abstract
Alongside their function in primary haemostasis and thrombo-inflammation, platelets are increasingly considered a bridge between mental, immunological and coagulation-related disorders. This review focuses on the link between platelets and the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) and its most frequent comorbidities. Platelet- and neuron-shared proteins involved in MDD are functionally described. Platelet-related studies performed in the context of MDD, cardiovascular disease, and major neurodegenerative, neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders are transversally presented from an epidemiological, genetic and functional point of view. To provide a complete scenario, we report the analysis of original data on the epidemiological link between platelets and depression symptoms suggesting moderating and interactive effects of sex on this association. Epidemiological and genetic studies discussed suggest that blood platelets might also be relevant biomarkers of MDD prediction and occurrence in the context of MDD comorbidities. Finally, this review has the ambition to formulate some directives and perspectives for future research on this topic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cardiovascular disorders are common in patients with panic disorder (PD), usually mediated by platelets. The present study was conducted to evaluate oxidative stress conditions and complete analysis of blood cells in patients with PD. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION Sixty healthy individuals and 60 patients were included in the study. Whole blood and serum samples were obtained from patients and controls. MATERIALS & METHOD Hematological studies, including blood cells count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit, were carried out on whole blood samples. In addition, oxidative stress indices including total antioxidant capacity, free oxygen species, and malondialdehyde concentration were measured in serum samples. RESULTS Results showed that patients with PD had a significant increase in mean platelet volume index (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), red blood cell distribution width (RDW), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) compared with healthy subjects (p < .05). Also, oxidative stress indices were significantly elevated in patients with PD compared with control group (p < .05). CONCLUSION Elevated MPV is a hematologic indicator for patients with PD. This disorder may be caused by impaired serotonin metabolism, resulting in increased oxidative stress, as well as in platelet serotonin transporters. Regarding elevated oxidative stress, the risk of cardiovascular complications is high in patients with PD.

Abstract
Objective Panic disorder (PD) is associated with changes in platelet and red blood cell (RBC) indices. However, the diagnostic or predictive value of these indices is unknown. This study assessed the diagnostic and discriminating value of platelet and RBC indices in patients with PD. Materials and Methods In this cross-sectional study including patients with PD ( n = 98) and healthy controls ( n = 102), we compared the following blood indices: mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), and RBC distribution width (RDW). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to calculate the area under the ROC curve (AUC), sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood ratio for the platelet and RBC indices. Results Statistically significant increase in PDW (17.01 ± 0.91 vs. 14.8 ± 2.06; p < 0.0001) and RDW (16.56 ± 2.32 vs. 15.12 ± 2.43; p < 0.0001) levels were observed in patients with PD. PDW and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration had larger AUC (0.89 and 0.74, respectively) and Youden's index (0.65 and 0.39, respectively), indicating their higher predictive capacity as well as higher sensitivity in discriminating patients with PD from healthy controls. Conclusion PDW can be considered a "good" diagnostic or predictive marker in patients with PD.

Abstract
Background: Changes in platelet indices have been reported in patients with panic disorder (PD). However, previous study findings are contradictory and inconclusive. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the platelet indices in patients with PD. Materials and Methods: Patients with PD (n = 123) and healthy controls (n = 133) were enrolled in this case control study. The platelet indices (mean platelet volume [MPV] and platelet distribution width [PDW]) along with red blood cell (RBC) indices (RBC count and red cell distribution width [RDW]) were compared between the two groups using the unpaired t-test. Results: Patients with PD had lower MPV (7.53 ± 0.93 fL vs. 8.91 ± 1.24 fL, P < 0.0001), higher PDW (16.96 ± 0.85 fL vs. 14.71 ± 2.07 fL, P < 0.0001), and higher platelet count (274.2 ± 80.66 × 109 L−1 vs. 243.1 ± 93.89 × 109 L−1, P < 0.005) than the healthy controls. Furthermore, there were significant differences between patients with PD and healthy controls in terms of their RBC count (4.32 ± 0.56 × 1012 L−1 vs. 4.08 ± 0.80 × 1012 L−1, P = 0.007) and RDW (16.48 ± 2.26 fL vs. 15.01 ± 2.25 fL, P < 0.0001). Conclusion: Patients with PD have increased PDW and RDW. The platelet and RBC indices may prove to be useful etiological and prognostic markers in patients with PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathophysiology of conversion disorder (CD) is still not fully established. Many psychiatric disorders are known to be associated with inflammatory processes. We aimed to compare the routine hemogram values of CD patients with those of the participants in the healthy control group, to assess the inflammation levels of the two groups. METHODS This study was conducted with CD patients (n=158) and healthy controls (n=145). Routine hematological parameters were examined in each participant. Group comparisons were made with Mann-Whitney U-test and Student's t-test. Regression analysis and receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis were also performed for the analysis of independent predictors. RESULTS The comparisons revealed that while neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), platelet, neutrophil, red cell distribution width (RDW), and mean platelet volume (MPV) were significantly higher in CD group (P<0.05), lymphocyte was decreased in that group (P>0.05). Multivariate and ROC analyses showed MPV, RDW, and NLR as independent predictors (P<0.05). ROC curve showed that MPV values of 7.8 or above could predict the CD with 84% sensitivity and 85% specificity (area under curve [AUC]=0.878; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.817-0.939), RDW values of 11.0 or above could predict the CD with 82% sensitivity and 73% specificity (AUC=0.871; 95% CI: 0.815-0.926), and NLR values of 1.8 or above could predict the CD with 85% sensitivity and 78% specificity (AUC=0.865; 95% CI: 0.802-0.929). CONCLUSION CD is related to the acute inflammatory process. MPV, RDW, and NLR can reflect this inflammation. These parameters could be used in differential diagnosis; increased RDW and MPV levels can be used as a novel marker in CD.

Abstract
Tinnitus is the perception of sound with no external stimulus and idiopathic subjective tinnitus is the most common type in adults. Mean platelet volume (MPV) alterations were shown in some inflammatory diseases and were evaluated as a clinically useful marker. Our aim was to investigate MPV alterations in idiopathic subjective tinnitus patients. A total of 101 patients and 54 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects were enrolled in the study. Patients included in the study had complaints of tinnitus for at least 3 months. All patients underwent detailed otolaryngologic examination, blood sampling, pure tone audiometry, magnetic resonance imaging of ear, and vertebrobasilar artery Doppler ultrasonography to make the differential diagnosis of tinnitus. Blood sampling consisted of renal-liver-thyroid function tests, lipid profile, and complete blood count. All tests and examinations except the imaging modalities were also performed for the control group. There were no differences in age and sex distribution of groups. Mean platelet volume values were significantly increased in tinnitus patients when compared with controls (p = 0.001). We think that MPV can be qualified as a useful marker in tinnitus patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As the relationship between psychological stress and platelet activation has been widely studied in recent years, activated platelets lead to certain biochemical changes, which occur in the brain in patients with mental disorders. However, data relating to the mean platelet volume (MPV) in patients with panic disorder (PD) are both limited and controversial. Herein, we aimed to evaluate, for the first time, the red cell distribution width (RDW) levels combined with MPV levels in patients with PD. PATIENTS AND METHODS Between January 2012 and June 2015, data of 30 treatment-naïve patients (16 females, 14 males; mean age: 37±10 years; range: 18-59 years) who were diagnosed with PD and 25 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (10 females, 15 males; mean age: 36±13 years; range: 18-59 years) (control group) were retrospectively analyzed. The white blood cell count (WBC), MPV, and RDW levels were measured in both groups. RESULTS The mean WBC, MPV, and RDW levels were 9,173.03±2,400.31/mm3, 8.19±1.13 fl, and 12.47±1.14%, respectively, in the PD group. These values were found to be 7,090.24±1,032.61, 6.85±0.67, and 11.63±0.85, respectively, in the healthy controls. The WBC, MPV, and RDW levels were significantly higher in the patients with PD compared to the healthy controls (P=0.001, P=0.001, and P=0.003, respectively). However, there was no significant difference in the platelet number between the patients with PD and healthy controls (P>0.05). CONCLUSION Our study results are the first to demonstrate that the RDW levels combined with MPV levels significantly increase among patients with PD. We believe that increased RDW and MPV levels can be used as a novel marker for PD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The relationship between platelet activation and psychiatric disorders has been shown in previous work. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is a measure of platelet size and a good indicator of platelet activity, which increases in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). It is known that anxiety is a considerable factor in the etiology of mortality in CVDs. The aim of the present study was to investigate any probable difference in the MPV of patients with panic disorder (PD). METHODS Sixty-one drug-free patients, aged 18-65 years and diagnosed with PD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, were included in the study, along with 63 healthy age- and sex-matched volunteers. The body mass index (BMI) was calculated and MPV measured for each subject. RESULTS The MPV was found to be higher in the PD group compared to the control group (P=0.004). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of platelet count or BMI. CONCLUSION Alterations in platelet activity may be a reflection of abnormal 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 1A receptor function in the central nervous system of subjects with a diagnosis of PD. These findings may elucidate the relationship between CVDs and PD. The findings of the present study suggest that MPV is increased in PD patients.
