Abstract
Microdosing psychedelic drugs at a level below the threshold to induce hallucinations is an increasingly common lifestyle practice. However, the effects of microdosing on sleep have not been previously reported. Here, we report results from a Phase 1 randomized controlled trial in which 80 healthy adult male volunteers received a 6-week course of either LSD (10 µg) or placebo with doses self-administered every third day. Participants used a commercially available sleep/activity tracker for the duration of the trial. Data from 3231 nights of sleep showed that on the night after microdosing, participants in the LSD group slept an extra 24.3 min per night (95% Confidence Interval 10.3-38.3 min) compared to placebo-with no reductions of sleep observed on the dosing day itself. There were no changes in the proportion of time spent in various sleep stages or in participant physical activity. These results show a clear modification of the physiological sleep requirements in healthy male volunteers who microdose LSD. The clear, clinically significant changes in objective measurements of sleep observed are difficult to explain as a placebo effect. Abstract
BACKGROUND The high prevalence of poor sleep quality (PSQ) in the general population leads to negative health outcomes. Since estimates of PSQ prevalence in the Chinese general population vary widely, this meta-analysis aimed to refine these estimates and to identify moderating factors. METHODS A comprehensive literature search was undertaken in both international (PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, and EMBASE) and Chinese (Wanfang, and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases) databases from inception to 23 November 2023. Studies were required to have used standard scales such as the Chinese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The pooled prevalence of PSQ and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to identify sources of heterogeneity. RESULTS In 32 studies with a combined 376,824 participants, the pooled prevalence of PSQ was 19.0% (95% CI 15.8-22.8%; range 6.6-43.6%). Across 22 studies that reported PSQI data, the pooled mean score was 4.32 (95%CI 3.82-4.81; SD = 0.502). The pooled mean sleep duration across 8 studies was 7.62 (95% CI 7.23-8.00; SD = 0.194) hours. Subgroup analyses showed that lower education (Q = 4.12, P = 0.042), living in less developed regions (Q = 60.28, P < 0.001), and lower PSQI cutoff values (Q = 9.80, P = 0.007) were significantly associated with PSQ. Meta-regression analyses showed that study quality was inversely associated with estimated PSQ prevalence (β = - 0.442, P = 0.004). LIMITATIONS Although measures such as subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed, substantial heterogeneity remained. Information related to sleep quality, such as comorbid physical diseases or psychiatric disorders, substance use, occupational types, and employment status, were not reported in most studies. CONCLUSION One in five people in the general population of China may have PSQ and people with lower education or living in western regions may be more susceptible.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inadequate sleep duration and poor sleep quality are associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS Using data from the National Health Interview Survey, we compared self-reported sleep duration and quality among different groups: Whites, Chinese, Asian Indian, Filipino, and Other Asians. Outcome included Sleep duration (≥7 and <7 hours) and sleep quality (coded as a binary variable). RESULTS We included 155,203 participants. The overall prevalence of ≥7 hours of sleep was 69.5% and poor sleep quality was reported by 73.9%. Compared to Whites and Chinese, Filipinos, and Other Asians were less likely to get adequate sleep (≥7 hours). All 4 Asian groups were less likely to report poor sleep quality compared with White individuals, while Asian Indians reported poor sleep quality less frequently compared with Chinese individuals. CONCLUSION There are significant differences in sleep duration and quality between White and Asian groups, as well as within Asian subgroups. Further studies with disaggregated Asian subgroup data are needed to formally study these disparities.

Abstract
Objectives: We test the hypothesis that the incidence of sleep problems is influenced by socio-demographic variables, particularly social deprivation and ethnicity. Methods: Self-reports of sleep duration and sleep difficulties (waking in the night, sleeping in the day, difficulty waking and snoring), personal wealth (household income, property-owning, etc.), ethnic group, employment, education, as well as post-code-based Townsend Social Deprivation, were extracted from UK Biobank's cohort of c500,000 British-domiciled adults (40-70 years). Analyses contrasted the incidence of different sleep problems and a composite measure of these (the Problematic Sleep Index) across groups. Results: Almost one-third of participants reported sleeping shorter (24.7%), or longer (7.7%) than age-corrected recommended sleep durations. The incidence of shorter or longer sleep increased with social deprivation and varied with ethnicity. Snoring, waking during the night, finding it difficult to get up in the morning and sleeping in the daytime were subject to similar effects. The Problematic Sleep Index showed being younger, male, employed, home-owning, having a higher household income, having a higher level of educational achievement, and time in education were all associated with better sleep, as was living in a more affluent area and being White. Conclusions: Sleep problems in Britain show a social gradient, independently of a range of other demographic and social influences, suggesting that sleep quality differs with and between ethnic groups. These sleep inequalities suggest that the protective and recuperative effects of sleep are disproportionately distributed across society and should encourage us to consider the potential benefits of community-specific sleep interventions.

Abstract
Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability and mortality. Both short and long sleep durations are associated with adverse health outcomes. Cross-sectional studies have shown an increased prevalence of stroke in long sleepers. Long sleep duration increases stroke incidence and mortality in prospective epidemiological studies. Accumulating evidence suggests that the magnitude of the association between sleep and stroke appears to be stronger for longer sleep than shorter sleep, yielding a J-shaped curve. Potential links between long sleep duration and stroke include increased incidence of diabetes and atrial fibrillation, elevated levels of inflammation, arterial stiffness, and blood pressure variability. Long sleep duration is a strong marker and a plausible risk factor for stroke and should be considered in future scoring for risk stratification and stroke prevention.

Abstract
Sleep duration, sleep quality and circadian rhythm disruption indicated by sleep chronotype are associated with type 2 diabetes. Sleep involves multiple dimensions that are closely interrelated. However, the sleep patterns of the population, and whether these sleep patterns are significantly associated with type 2 diabetes, are unknown when considering more sleep dimensions. Our objective was to explore the latent classes of sleep patterns in the population and identify sleep patterns associated with type 2 diabetes. Latent class analysis was used to explore the best latent classes of sleep patterns based on eleven sleep dimensions of the study population. Logistic regression was used to identify sleep patterns associated with type 2 diabetes. A total of 1200 participants were included in the study. There were three classes of sleep patterns in the study population: "circadian disruption with daytime dysfunction" (class 1), "poor sleep status with daytime sleepiness" (class 2), and "favorable sleep status" (class 3). After controlling for all confounding factors, people in class 2 have significantly higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes than those in class 3 (OR: 2.24, 95% CI 1.26-4.00). Sleep problems have aggregated characteristics. People with sleep patterns involving more or worse sleep problems have higher significantly prevalence of T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND South Asians comprise 20% of the world population. There is a high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases among South Asians, and sleep disorders may be a key risk factor. OBJECTIVE The review examined literature about cardiovascular and sleep disorders in South Asian countries and in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the Netherlands. METHODS Methods from Arksey and O'Malley's framework and Peter et al. were used to synthesize findings from 23 research studies. RESULTS The studies addressed sleep disorders with hypertension, heart failure, diabetes, and obesity. Obstructive sleep apnea and short sleep duration were common and associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality at early ages in South Asians. Researchers analyzed polysomnography-derived sleep measures, vascular functions, polymorphisms, C-reactive protein levels, public knowledge about cardiovascular health, and sleep-related questionnaire scores. Most studies were conducted in major metropolitan areas; no data were available about people living in locations with limited health care resources. Among migrant South Asians, researchers did not explore the role of acculturation on sleep patterns and cardiovascular outcomes. CONCLUSIONS The review highlights important considerations for researchers who plan to investigate cardiovascular conditions in South Asian communities. There is a need for more knowledge about sleep-related risk factors, and researchers should also examine cultural, political, and socioeconomic factors that affect health care access. This knowledge will be imperative for designing effective and tailored disease prevention strategies for South Asian populations.

Abstract
AIMS Sleep disorders are associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases in observational studies, but the causality remains unclear. In this study, we leveraged two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to assess the causal associations of self-reported daytime napping, daytime sleepiness, and other sleep phenotypes with cardiometabolic diseases including ischaemic stroke (IS), coronary artery disease (CAD), heart failure (HF), and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS AND RESULTS We selected genetic variants as instrumental variables for self-reported daytime napping, daytime sleepiness, morning person, insomnia, short sleep duration, and long sleep duration from European-descent genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Summary statistics for cardiometabolic diseases originated from four different GWASs with a total of 2 500 086 participants. We used the inverse-variance weighted method to explore the role of self-reported sleep phenotypes on the aetiology of cardiometabolic diseases in the main analyses, followed by several sensitivity analyses for robustness validation. Genetically predicted self-reported daytime napping [T2DM: OR, 1.56 (95% confidence interval, 1.21-2.02)], insomnia [IS: OR, 1.07 (1.04-1.11)]; CAD: OR, 1.13 (1.08-1.17); HF: OR, 1.10 (1.07-1.14); T2DM: OR, 1.16 (1.11-1.22); and short sleep duration [CAD: OR, 1.37 (1.21-1.55)] were causally associated with an elevated risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Moreover, genetically determined self-reported daytime sleepiness [CAD: OR, 2.05 (1.18-3.57); HF: OR, 1.82 (1.15-2.87)] and morning person [HF: 1.06 OR, (1.01-1.11)] had potential detrimental effect on cardiometabolic risks. CONCLUSION Self-reported daytime napping, insomnia, and short sleep duration had causal roles in the development of cardiometabolic diseases, while self-reported daytime sleepiness and morning person was the potential risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases.

Abstract
The identification of optimal sleep duration recommendations for the general population has long been an important goal on the public health agenda, as both short and long sleep duration have been linked to unfavourable health outcomes. Yet, sleep is more than duration alone and can be described across multiple domains, such as timing, regularity, satisfaction, alertness, and efficiency. We reviewed observational population‐based studies that examined differences in age, sex, and origin across multiple dimensions of sleep. Reviewed literature suggests an increasing prevalence of insomnia symptoms, shorter and less deep sleep in old age. Overall, women report poorer sleep quality than men despite objective measures revealing shorter and more fragmented sleep in men. Minorities generally have poorer quantity and quality of sleep, but multi‐ethnic studies have reported mixed results regarding the subjective experience of sleep. In sum, effects of age, sex and origin differ across sleep dimensions, thereby suggesting that the multidimensionality of sleep and how these different aspects interact should be studied across individuals. Studies should include both self‐reported measures and objective assessments in diverse population‐based samples, as both aspects are important to understand sleep health in the general population. Data‐driven descriptions could provide researchers and clinicians with insights into how well individuals are sleeping and offer concrete targets for promotion of sleep health across the population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep is vital for maintaining individual's physical and mental health. Prior studies have reported close relationships between sleep duration and chronic diseases. However, in China, the prevalence of aberrant sleep duration and the associations between sleep duration and chronic conditions still merit studying in Guangdong province. This study aimed at examining the relationship between sleep duration and multiple dimensions of sociodemographic characteristics, mental health and chronic diseases in Guangdong province in China, with a large population-based data of individuals aged from 18 to 85 years old. METHODS This study aimed at analyzing the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the population in Guangdong province. Multistage stratified cluster sampling was applied for this study. 13,768 participants from Guangdong province were interviewed with standardized assessment tools, including Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7). Basic socio-demographic information, mental health and chronic diseases information were collected. Self-reported sleep duration was classified as three types: short (< 7 h), normative (7-9 h) and long (≥9 h). RESULTS The mean sleep duration was 6.75 ± 1.11 h. Short sleepers had a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, including anemia (6.2%, p = 0.024), gout (2.8%, p = 0.010), hyperlipidemia (3.9%, p = 0.003) and low back pain (5.6%, p = 0.020) than other types of sleeper. Multinomial logistic regression analysis revealed that short sleepers were more likely to have low income level, have depressive symptoms, be ex- or current drinkers and be overweight. Anemia, hyperlipidemia and low back pain were all risk factors for short sleep, while malignant tumor was risky for long sleep. CONCLUSIONS Low income level, drinking status, being overweight, and chronic conditions may be associated with aberrant sleep duration in Guangdong province general population. Short sleepers have a higher risk of suffering from anemia, hyperlipidemia, and low back pain, while long sleepers are more likely to have malignant tumor. Health professionals should value the sleep patterns in general health care and attach importance to conduct further epidemiologic surveys to explore the relationship between sleep duration and health.
